Analysis Of Defense Signaling Pathway Genes Associated With Fungal Resistance To Aspergillus Flavus And Aflatoxin Accumulation In Corn, Felicia Marie Parish Aug 2019

Analysis Of Defense Signaling Pathway Genes Associated With Fungal Resistance To Aspergillus Flavus And Aflatoxin Accumulation In Corn, Felicia Marie Parish

Theses and Dissertations

Aspergillus flavus exemplifies a pathogenic fungus that remains a significant contributor to the loss of corn (Zea mays) crops. The production of carcinogenic aflatoxins renders the crop hazardous for consumption and causes significant loss to farmers. Therefore, the prevention of A. flavus contamination continues to persist as a topic for research intervention. Host resistance to this pathogen provides a promising source of defense for the corn plant. Corn inbred line Mp313E was previously identified to exhibit significant resistance against the A. flavus fungal infection and aflatoxin contamination. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping has previously established four major QTL locations associated …

Utilizing Inter-Seeding Techniques And Brachiaria Species As A Fall Cover Crop To Control Post-Harvest Amaranth, Justin Calhoun Aug 2019

Utilizing Inter-Seeding Techniques And Brachiaria Species As A Fall Cover Crop To Control Post-Harvest Amaranth, Justin Calhoun

Theses and Dissertations

Early planting soybean (Glycine max L.) strategies across the mid-southern United States has complicated weed management in the form of post-harvest weed control. Research has investigated the use of cover crops to aid in management of weed populations during winter months, but conventional cover crops provides minimal weed management benefit immediately following cash crop harvest. Inter-seeding cover crop into crop canopies has potential to promote earlier cover crop establishment, thus creating higher potential for post-harvest weed management. However, factors such as inter-seeding timing, herbicide residue, as well as harvest aid applications must be considered. Therefore, studies were conducted in Mississippi …

Varietal And Residual Soil Test K Level Effects On Soybean Leaf K Status And Yield, Andrew Dygert Aug 2019

Varietal And Residual Soil Test K Level Effects On Soybean Leaf K Status And Yield, Andrew Dygert

Theses and Dissertations

Newer multi-trait soybean varieties have resulted in greater yields, bringing into question whether current soil test K (STK) correlation, calibration, and recommendations need updating to maximize yield. The objective of this study was to refine soil test correlation and calibration using a range in residual STK levels and response in temporal leaf and seed K concentrations and yield across soybean maturity groups IV and V. For the 0- to 15-cm soil depth STK levels greater than 125 mg K kg-1, K did not limit yield. Critical tissue K varied between years and maturity group. Critical K at R1, R3, and …

Foraging Ecology And Depredation Impact Of Scaup On Commercial Baitfish And Sportfish Farms In Eastern Arkansas, Stephen Clements

Theses and Dissertations

Scaup (Aythya spp.) are suspected of consuming substantial quantities of fish from Arkansas commercial baitfish and sportfish farms. We investigated the foraging ecology and depredation impact of scaup on farms by surveying ponds and collecting scaup during two autumn-winters (2016-2018) in Arkansas. Scaup abundance and fish they consumed were highly variable between winters. More scaup were present and they ate more fish during the second winter (2017-2018) than the previous winter. In the second year, there were an estimated 874,941 scaup use-days and 18% of Lesser Scaup diet was fish. We found that scaup use of ponds was more likely …

Illusionary Success: Modern Failures In Child Welfare, Courtney Harris Aug 2019

Illusionary Success: Modern Failures In Child Welfare, Courtney Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Child welfare is constantly labeled as “failure- riddled” and “scandalous” with high rates of children who are in an endless cycle of removal, reunification, and removal. Some children have lifelong abuse ramifications due to a longstanding history of childhood abuse. Other children, unfortunately, pay the ultimate price and die. State Child Welfare entities are working within their confines and become bound by federal and state statutes and laws. While media and citizen onlookers criticize and blame the state, workers, and families, the field suffers from a lack of better offers. This dissertation seeks to use the state of Tennessee as …

Examining Race Differences In Blood Pressure Control Among People With Chronic Kidney Disease, Jayme Savoy, Roland J. Thorpe, Jr., Phd

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients, 20% of them also have hypertension (HTN). African Americans (AA) are known to be more at risk of CKD development and poor HTN control compared to Whites, largely due to their higher prevalence of diabetes and HTN. While those health conditions are a known risk factor to CKD, it is less clear if there is a race difference in HTN control among CKD patients.

Using a combined 1999-2014 data set from The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we sought to determine if there is an association between race and HTN control among …

Inspiration For The Future: The Role Of Inspiratory Muscle Training In Cystic Fibrosis., Ren-Jay Shei, Robert L Dekerlegand, Kelly A Mackintosh, John D Lowman, Melitta A Mcnarry

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited, multi-system, life-limiting disease characterized by a progressive decline in lung function, which accounts for the majority of CF-related morbidity and mortality. Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) has been proposed as a rehabilitative strategy to treat respiratory impairments associated with CF. However, despite evidence of therapeutic benefits in healthy and other clinical populations, the routine application of IMT in CF can neither be supported nor refuted due to the paucity of methodologically rigorous research. Specifically, the interpretation of available studies regarding the efficacy of IMT in CF is hampered by methodological threats to internal and external …

Spanish lime (Melicoccus bijugatus Jacq.) is aNeotropical fruit tree cultivated, mainly, in orchards for self-consumption or local sale. The genus Melicoccus includes other nine species with edible fruits, some of these species are at risk of extinction. Like for the vast majority of tropical fruit trees, there is no information on the genetic diversity of Spanish lime and its related species, and this is mostly due to the lack of molecular markers. The objectives of this study were to present the first microsatellite markers developed for Spanish lime, testing its usefulness on a sample of cultivated accessions, as well as …

Faculty Publications

Background

Interaction within mothers’ social networks can theoretically diffuse messages from interventions and campaigns into norms and practices for infant and young child feeding (IYCF).

Objectives

We hypothesized that mothers’ social networks, diffusion of information, and social norms differed in intensive [intensive interpersonal counseling (IPC), community mobilization (CM), and mass media (MM)] compared with nonintensive (standard IPC and less-intensive CM and MM) intervention areas, were associated with IYCF practices, and partly explained practice improvement.

Methods

We conducted household surveys at endline in 2014 and follow-up in 2016 (n = ∼2000 each round). We used multiple regression to test differences …

An important aspect of health monitoring is effective logging of food consumption. This can help management of diet-related diseases like obesity, diabetes, and even cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, food logging can help fitness enthusiasts, and people who wanting to achieve a target weight. However, food-logging is cumbersome, and requires not only taking additional effort to note down the food item consumed regularly, but also sufficient knowledge of the food item consumed (which is difficult due to the availability of a wide variety of cuisines). With increasing reliance on smart devices, we exploit the convenience offered through the use of smart phones …

Effects Of Adrenergic Or A Combination Of Adrenergic And Opioid Drugs On Assessments Of Insulin Sensitivity In Mares, Lauren Kerrigan

LSU Master's Theses

Excitement is a problem when conducting endocrine tests on fractious horses. Epinephrine (EPI), for example, was shown to obliterate the insulin-induced decrease in blood glucose concentrations. Sedation may be a solution; however, perturbation of results may preclude useful information. The objectives of the four experiments presented herein were 1) to determine the effects of EPI on insulin response to glucose infusion (IR2G), 2) to assess the effects of the α-adrenergic sedative, detomidine (DET), alone or in combination with the opioid agonist, butorphanol (BUT), on IR2G and glucose response to insulin (GR2I), and 3) to assess the effects of BUT alone …

Choline: Exploring The Growing Science On Its Benefits For Moms And Babies, Hunter W. Korsmo, Xinyin Jiang, Marie A. Caudill

Publications and Research

The importance of ensuring adequate choline intakes during pregnancy is increasingly recognized. Choline is critical for a number of physiological processes during the prenatal period with roles in membrane biosynthesis and tissue expansion, neurotransmission and brain development, and methyl group donation and gene expression. Studies in animals and humans have shown that supplementing the maternal diet with additional choline improves several pregnancy outcomes and protects against certain neural and metabolic insults. Most pregnant women in the U.S. are not achieving choline intake recommendations of 450 mg/day and would likely benefit from boosting their choline intakes through dietary and/or supplemental approaches.
