In sub-Saharan Africa, informal markets account for more than 80% of the total food selling. Fish is a major protein source for households in Malawi and is commonly purchased from individual vendors. The aim of this study was to review national acts and policies and local regulations focused on fresh fish sold at open-air markets or by mobile vendors and to further examine the water, sanitation, and hygiene environment that may impact food safety in Mzuzu City, Malawi. The study used interviews, an observational checklist, and sampling of water and fish skin. In general, there was limited oversight of food …

Eating disorders (EDs) are stereotypically associated with thin, White, affluent women and girls. One result of the ED stereotype has been a relative dearth of ED research with marginalized communities. The aim of the present study was to replicate recent findings showing an association between severity of food insecurity (FI) and increased ED pathology. Participants included 891 clients at an urban food bank. Results replicated previous research with participants in the most severe FI group reporting significantly higher levels of ED pathology, dietary restraint, anxiety, and depression. Findings provide further evidence that the thin, White, affluent, female ED stereotype offers …

Storm-Induced Predator-Prey Decoupling Promotes Springtime Accumulation Of North Atlantic Phytoplankton, Francoise Morison, Elizabeth Harvey, Gayantonia Franzè, Susanne Menden-Deuer
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
We examined the response of North Atlantic plankton population dynamics to rapid re-stratification of surface waters following a deep mixing event during spring. Over the 4-day occupation of a station, we measured phytoplankton growth and grazer/virus-induced mortality rates in dilution assays conducted across a range of light intensities. Rates were estimated from changes in chlorophyll a and the abundance of three phytoplankton groups identified by flow cytometry. Initially, biological and physical water column properties were homogeneous down to >200 m, followed by rapid shoaling of the mixed layer to 20–30 m. Initial in situ chlorophyll a concentration was 0.4 μ …

Nitrogen (N) Dynamics In A Post-Fire Landscape: A Search For The Missing N Source, Cory C. Cleveland
University Grant Program Reports
Throughout the intermountain western U.S., both the number and extent of highintensity wildfires are increasing (Westerling et al. 2006; Westerling 2016; Abatzaglou & Williams 2017). In Montana alone, wildfires consumed more than 1 million acres in 2017, and these trends are projected to continue (USDA 2017). High-intensity fire not only consumes vegetation, but also depletes much of the nutrient capital needed for recovering forests to regenerate. The majority of temperate forests are most strongly limited by nitrogen (N) availability (LeBauer & Treseder 2008), meaning that even when undisturbed, tree growth is often suppressed by insufficient quantities of N. During fire, …

© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) has been largely associated with latitude and sunshine exposure across several regions. According to previous results, 25(OH)D concentrations are, on average, relatively low in countries with abundant sunshine, including those of the Middle East and North Africa region, as well as lower-latitude Europe. The standard explanation for this phenomenon is that people wear concealing clothing because of cultural and religious practices and that high temperatures in summer limit direct sun exposure. However, the role of diet in the development of profound hypovitaminosis D has not been adequately …

Scapsipedus icipe Hugel and Tanga (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) is a newly described edible cricket species. Although, there is substantial interest in mass production of S. icipe for human food and animal feed, no information exists on the impact of temperature on their bionomics. Temperature-dependent development, survival, reproductive and life table parameters of S. icipe was generated and integrated into advanced Insect Life Cycle Modeling software to describe relative S. icipe population increase and spatial spread based on nine constant temperature conditions. We examined model predictions and implications for S. icipe potential distribution in Africa under current and future climate. These regions …

Corticosterone is the primary metabolic steroid in birds and is vital for maintaining homeostasis. However, the relationship between baseline corticosterone and reproduction is unclear, and we lack an understanding of how differences in baseline corticosterone at one stage of the breeding cycle influence reproductive effort at later stages. In a wild population of house wrens, we quantified the concentration of corticosterone in yolks of freshly laid eggs as an integrated measure of maternal physiology and related this to a behavioral measure of stress reactivity made during the nestling period, namely, the latency with which females resumed parental activities following a …

Indications For Lung Transplant Referral And Listing, Omar Shweish, Goutham Dronavalli
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Lung transplantation is a valuable therapeutic option for many patients with severe lung disease who have exhausted other medical or surgical therapies. However, since lungs are not a manufacturable organ like artificial heart valves or left ventricular assist devices, and since they are a limited resource compared to number of patients requiring the organs, the Department of Health and Human Services set the Final Rule of organ allocation in 1998. This led to development and implementation of Lung Allocation Score (LAS) in 2005. The score broadly divides lung diseases into 4 diagnostic criteria with a coefficient factor given to each …

When Individual Goal Pursuit Turns Competitive: How We Sabotage And Coast, Szu-Chi Huang, Stephanie C. Lin, Ying Zhang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
People working toward individual goals often find themselves surrounded by others who are pursuing similar goals, such as at school, in fitness classes, and through goal-oriented network devices like Fitbit. This research explores when these individual goal pursuits can turn into competitions, why it happens, and the downstream consequences of this pseudo-competition on goal pursuers. We found that people were more likely to treat their goal pursuit as a competition when they were near the end (vs. at the beginning) of their individual goal and thus prioritized relative positional gain (i.e., performing better than others sharing similar pursuits) over making …

Geography
Collecting high-frequency social-environmental data about farming practices in sub-Saharan Africa can provide new insight into environmental changes that farmers face and how they respond within smallholder agro-ecosystems. Traditional data collection methods such as agricultural censuses are costly and not useful for understanding intra-annual and real-time decisions. Short-message service (SMS) has the potential to transform the nature of data collection in coupled social-ecological systems. We present a system for collecting, managing, and synthesizing weekly data from farmers, including data infrastructure for management of big and heterogeneous datasets; probabilistic data quality assessment tools; and visualization and analysis tools such as mapping and …

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who begin their careers in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) may be challenged in this practice environment. Inadequate prior experience as a staff nurse, limited opportunities for clinical placements in the PICU during graduate education, and being in a fast-paced, high-acuity practice environment without prior exposure to critically ill children are practice challenges in the PICU setting. The goal of postgraduate education training programs (fellowship programs) for the acute care pediatric nurse practitioner (ACPNP) is to prepare students to become beginner practitioners who can function effectively in the acute care setting within a few …

Testosterone Replacement For Male Military Personnel - A Potential Countermeasure To Reduce Injury And Improve Performance Under Extreme Conditions, Nicolas H. Hart, Robert U. Newton
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Tactical operators, inclusive of soldiers in the military, are reliant upon their physiological and psychological state in often volatile and extreme life or death situations that require correct decisions and precise actions to ensure operational success with minimal collateral damage. Accordingly, the development of physical and mental resilience are hallmarks of prophylactic and remedial programs designed to ensure military personnel are combat ready, thus optimising their capacity to perform at expert levels, while reducing their risk of injury or the severity of injury sustained...

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Traditional prenatal care has been the stalwart of care in the United States since the 1920s; however, a new model of care is emerging: group-style prenatal care. This model of care has been well-documented within literature as having notable maternal and fetal outcomes, including increased patient satisfaction, decreased preterm birth rates, increased breastfeeding rates, and increased patient compliance, to name only a few. With such remarkable outcomes, it begs the question of why the group prenatal care model is not more widely utilized. This project aimed to determine if increasing the knowledge of healthcare providers in a private obstetrics practice …

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Libs): A Potential Quality Tool For Infant Formula Manufacture, Xavier Cama Moncunill
Doctoral
Breast milk is considered the ideal food for infants. However, breastfeeding is at times supplemented or replaced with suitable alternatives. Infant formula (IF) is an industrially produced food intended as a breast milk substitute, which needs to satisfy, by itself, all nutritional requirements of infants. For this reason, it is of critical importance that IF provides the adequate amounts of nutrients including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising emission spectroscopic technique for elemental analysis, which can provide real-time measurements with little to no sample preparation. Hence, the main goal of this thesis was …

The most common pesticides used in rice farming are organophosphates and carbamates. These pesticides inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, resulting in excessive levels of acetylcholine accumulation and disrupted neurotransmission. This study compared AChE activity and hematological parameters between pesticide-using rice farmers, non-pesticide using rice farmers, and non-agricultural occupational groups (non-farmers). Pesticide residues that accumulated in rice and the water and soil of the study area were also determined. AChE activity of all participants showed 10 from 87 samples (11.49%) as borderline depressed, with 50% of these being pesticide-using farmers. Most of the hematological parameters were normal in all samples. However, platelet …
