An Exploration Of Contextual Factors Of Weight-Based Discrimination Against Business Leaders, Ellen Hermann Lynch Nov 2019

An Exploration Of Contextual Factors Of Weight-Based Discrimination Against Business Leaders, Ellen Hermann Lynch

Dissertations

Two-thirds of the adult population of the United States are considered overweight (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2013) and are susceptible to weight-based discrimination in the workplace (Rudolph, Wells, Weller, & Baltes, 2009). The weight-based discrimination experienced by business leaders is relatively unknown. The present research used Leader Categorization Theory (Lord & Maher, 1991) as a framework to examine the extent to which a business leader’s weight is associated with their perceived leadership qualities and effectiveness in two studies. The first study isolated the relationship between the base rate of weight in an organization and the assumed weight of the …

microRNA-21 (miR-21) is the most commonly upregulated miRNA in solid tumors. This cancer-associated microRNA (oncomiR) regulates various downstream effectors associated with tumor pathogenesis during all stages of carcinogenesis. In this study, we analyzed the function of miR-21 in noncancer cells of the tumor microenvironment to further evaluate its contribution to tumor progression. We report that the expression of miR-21 in cells of the tumor immune infiltrate, and in particular in macrophages, was responsible for promoting tumor growth. Absence of miR-21 expression in tumor- associated macrophages (TAMs), caused a global rewiring of their transcriptional regulatory network that was skewed toward a …

How To Bathe A Baby, Jerry Zezima Nov 2019

How To Bathe A Baby, Jerry Zezima

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Even though I haven't taken a bath since I was a baby, which dates all the way back to the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose bathing habits are classified information, I am now an expert on the subject. That's because I recently gave a bath to a baby who needed it so badly, after her diaper exploded all over me, that I would have taken one, too, except I couldn't fit in the sink.

Introduction Of A Hybrid Monitor For Cyber-Physical Systems, J. Ceasar Aguma, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Amelia Regan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computing systems and mobile technologies have changed dramatically since the introduction of firewall technology in 1988. The internet has grown from a simple network of networks to a cyber and physical entity that encompasses the entire planet. Cyber-physical systems(CPS) now control most of the day to day operations of human civilization from autonomous cars to nuclear energy plants. While phenomenal, this growth has created new security threats. These are threats that cannot be blocked by a firewall for they are not only cyber but cyber-physical. In light of these cyber-physical threats, this paper proposes a security measure that promises to …

“We Can Learn Some Things From Them, But They Can Learn Some Things From Us Too”: Intergenerational Perceptions Of Shared Infant Feeding Information, Alexis L. Woods Barr Nov 2019

“We Can Learn Some Things From Them, But They Can Learn Some Things From Us Too”: Intergenerational Perceptions Of Shared Infant Feeding Information, Alexis L. Woods Barr

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Breastfeeding is associated with unparalleled benefits for infants, mothers, families and society. In light of the breastfeeding disparities and health disparities experienced by the African American community, their women and children stand to gain the most from breastfeeding practices compared to other first-food feeding methods. Moreover, African American mothers are constantly exposed to messages, images, and stereotypes about motherhood (from multiple channels of communication) which influences their infant feeding practices. Many of these exposures send mixed messages and tend to be cultural contradictions of Black motherhood. What complicates this issue is the shortage of research that investigates the intergenerational infant …

The study endeavour to investigate the level of information access opened to PLWHA and tried to find the relationship between information accessibility and risk practices.

The study adopted survey research design of correlational type. The target population was 8,135PLWHA in the selected three health institutions. Pooled standard error of proportion was used to determine 339 PLWHA and critical incident technique was used to …

Psychological Pathway From Obesity-Related Stigma To Anxiety Via Internalized Stigma And Self-Esteem Among Adolescents In Taiwan, Chung-Ying Lin, Meng-Che Tsai, Chih-Hsiang Liu, Yi-Ching Lin, Yi-Ping Hsieh, Carol Strong Nov 2019

Psychological Pathway From Obesity-Related Stigma To Anxiety Via Internalized Stigma And Self-Esteem Among Adolescents In Taiwan, Chung-Ying Lin, Meng-Che Tsai, Chih-Hsiang Liu, Yi-Ching Lin, Yi-Ping Hsieh, Carol Strong

Social Work Faculty Publications

The objective of this research was to examine the pathway from public stigma, to perceived stigma, to depression in adolescents via internalized stigma. Adolescents in grade 7 through 9 from a junior high school in Changhua County in Taiwan completed self-administered surveys from March to July in 2018. Adolescents were asked questions regarding depressive symptoms, obesity-related perceived stigma, and internalized stigma. Structural equation modeling was used to fit the pathway model. The pathway was first analyzed with the full sample and then stratified by actual and perceived weight status. Our final analytic sample consisted of 464 adolescents. The pathway model …

Enabling Autonomous Operation Of Micro Aerial Vehicles Through Gps To Gps-Denied Transitions, James Scott Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

Micro aerial vehicles and other autonomous systems have the potential to truly transform life as we know it, however much of the potential of autonomous systems remains unrealized because reliable navigation is still an unsolved problem with significant challenges. This dissertation presents solutions to many aspects of autonomous navigation. First, it presents ROSflight, a software and hardware architure that allows for rapid prototyping and experimentation of autonomy algorithms on MAVs with lightweight, efficient flight control. Next, this dissertation presents improvments to the state-of-the-art in optimal control of quadrotors by utilizing the error-state formulation frequently utilized in state estimation. It is …

Structures And Energetics Of Clusters Surrounding Diatomic Anions Stabilized By Hydrogen, Halogen, And Other Noncovalent Bonds, Steve Scheiner, Mariusz Michalczyk, Rafal Wysokiński, Wiktor Zierkiewicz

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Diatomic anions CN-, NO-, and OH- are surrounded by 2, 3, and 4 ligand molecules drawn from the HF, HCl, XF, YF2, ZF3, TF4, and TrF3 set wherein X= Cl,Br, Y=S,Se, Z=P,As, T=Si,Ge, and Tr=Al,Ga. In the case of two ligands, both interact with the N of NO- and the O of OH-, but one approaches either end of CN-. Unlike the H and halogen bonding units, as the number of ligands increases there is a tendency for chalcogen, pnicogen, tetrel, and triel-bonding ligands to form a cage around the central anion, with strong inter-ligand noncovalent bonds. There are a …
