Playing A Bad Character But Endorsing A Good Cause: Actor-Character Fundamental Attribution Error And Persuasion, Riva Tukachinsky Nov 2019

Playing A Bad Character But Endorsing A Good Cause: Actor-Character Fundamental Attribution Error And Persuasion, Riva Tukachinsky

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

The study examines the implications of fundamental attribution error, wherein viewers misattribute qualities of the fictional characters onto the actors who portray them. In an experiment, individuals watched an actor playing a role of either a hero or a villain. Then, participants watched the same actor in a public service announcement. In line with the attribution theory, viewers rated the actor’s personality less positively, reported a weaker parasocial relationship with the actor, and listed more negative thoughts about the advertisement after exposure to the actor playing a villain.

Biointerfacial Studies Of Nitrifying Biofilms On Physically And Chemically Modified Surfaces, Philip Marley Roveto Nov 2019

Biointerfacial Studies Of Nitrifying Biofilms On Physically And Chemically Modified Surfaces, Philip Marley Roveto

Civil Engineering ETDs

Interactions between bacteria and surfaces during the initiation of biofilm formation are complex phenomena with significant and wide-ranging implications for nutrient cycling, ecosystem and human health, and the remediation of anthropogenic pollutants. Nitrifying biofilms are currently used for ammonia removal in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) systems. As well-studied biofilms, they can serve as models towards understanding crucial aspects of biofilm engineering. The overall objective of this research was to better understand how variations in specific surface chemistries and topographical features affect nitrification rates and microbial populations in an effort to develop technologies for improved productivity. The experimental approach was to …

Bio-Mechanical Characterization Of Adherent Cell Layers With A Pdms Cantilever, Merrel Truly Holley Nov 2019

Bio-Mechanical Characterization Of Adherent Cell Layers With A Pdms Cantilever, Merrel Truly Holley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the last few decades, the mechanical characteristics of human cells has been linked to many physiological processes and pathological conditions, illustrating the importance as effective biomarkers. Mounting research has shown the mechanical force between cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a vital role in cellular processes such as tissue homeostasis, wound healing, cancer metastasis, and the progression of various diseases. This mechanical force, or the force that a cell produces on its surroundings, is termed as the cellular traction force (CTF). Precise characterization of the CTF can expand our knowledge of these important cellular processes as well as …

Automatically Bucket Users With Traits In Common Into Their Own Chatrooms, Kurt Wilms

Defensive Publications Series

A method for automatically bucketing users with traits in common into their own chatrooms is described. A processing device determines that an amount of viewers of a livestream meets a first threshold and receives user information of the viewers. The processing device determines, based on the user information, subsets of the viewers, where each of the subsets includes a corresponding amount of viewers that meets a second threshold. The processing device provides a corresponding chatroom for each of the subsets. In one implementation, the processing device receives user input of a plurality of chatrooms for a livestream, determines subsets of …

Suicide: From Sin To Sickness, Kylie Candela, Arcadia University Nov 2019

Suicide: From Sin To Sickness, Kylie Candela, Arcadia University

The Compass

From Judas to Kurt Cobain, suicide has not been a stranger to both ancient and modern cultures. However, Western cultures have come to view suicide differently. Since Christianity became Western society’s largest practiced religion, suicide has been considered to be a mortal sin. However, as more research has been done on mental illness, Westerners have begun to view suicide sympathetically as a sign of severe mental suffering.

Pitfalls When Dealing With The Public, Politicians, And Project Developers, Darrin Jacobs Nov 2019

Pitfalls When Dealing With The Public, Politicians, And Project Developers, Darrin Jacobs

Building Academy Conference

Officials who work in the public sector deal with external pressures from citizens, elected officials, contractors, and developers. These groups are all trying to influence building, planning, and code enforcement officials to make sure that their particular projects are completed on their terms. Sometimes these efforts to influence are outright unethical, other times they are more subtle, but can be just a damaging to a public officials reputations. It’s important for an official who works in the public sector to recognize when they may be entering into dangerous territory and ways to avoid putting themselves in a compromising position.

“Bolivarian Authoritarianism”: Regime Change In Venezuela Under Hugo Chávez, Gonzalo E. Vazquez

Open Access Dissertations

In 1992, Hugo Chávez led an unsuccessful coup against the Venezuelan government and gained popularity by vowing to radicalize its democracy, eradicate political corruption and bring forth social equity. Chávez won over half of the votes in the 1998 national election. Once in office, he implemented systematic changes to the country’s political machinery that undermined important pillars of democracy and strengthened the absolute power of his presidency. Many controversies surround the Chávez regime and critics argue that it represented a new form of authoritarianism that combined elements of populism, nationalism, and political hierarchy. The objective of this dissertation was to …

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Both short and long sleep are associated with an adverse lipid profile, likely through different biological pathways. To elucidate the biology of sleep-associated adverse lipid profile, we conduct multi-ancestry genome-wide sleep-SNP interaction analyses on three lipid traits (HDL-c, LDL-c and triglycerides). In the total study sample (discovery + replication) of 126,926 individuals from 5 different ancestry groups, when considering either long or short total sleep time interactions in joint analyses, we identify 49 previously unreported lipid loci, and 10 additional previously unreported lipid loci in a restricted sample of European-ancestry cohorts. In addition, we identify new gene-sleep interactions for known …

Politics Versus Policies: Fourth Wave Feminist Critiques Of Higher Education’S Response To Sexual Violence, Rita A. Gardiner Ph.D, Michelle Shockness, Jennifer Almquist, Hayley Finn

Education Publications

This article uses the lens of fourth wave feminism to examine media accounts of institutional and student responses in two cases of sexual violence at institutions of higher education. Competing discourses reveal a disconnect between what institutions say they do and students’ actual experiences of the institutional handling of sexual violence cases. When policies, actions, and values are not fully aligned, institutions of higher education are unable to respond to societal and institutional injustices. Hence, recommendations for better alignment between institutional values and actions are proposed.

Exploring The Application Of Homomorphic Encryption To A Cross Domain Solution, Cody W. Tinker, Kevin Millar, Alan Kaminsky, Michael Kurdziel, Marcin Lukowiak, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Presentations and other scholarship

A Cross Domain Solution (CDS) is a means of secure information exchange that provides the ability to access or transfer digital data between varying security domains. Most existing CDS methods focus on risk management policies that rely on using protected or trusted parties to process the information in order to solve this problem. A CDS that is able to function in the presence of untrusted parties is a challenge. We apply the concepts of homomorphic encryption (HE) to explore a new solution to the CDS problem. We built a practical software case study application using the Yet Another Somewhat Homomorphic …
