College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The aim of the study is to contribute to the scholarly works that examine food and the role it plays as a tool in the diplomatic influence known as gastrodiplomacy. This work also offers readers literature inclusive of authors, periods of time, sources, and titles pertaining to the topic. The goal is to categorize diverse workings and problems related to gastrodiplomacy that have been analyzed up to this point. A systematic review of 32 peer-reviewed academic articles published in the past five years, validate the depth of the present research. Up-to-date subjects, methodologies, and results are provided, in addition to …

Designation Of A Neotype For Oeneis Melissa (Fabricius, 1775) And A Lectotype For Oeneis Polixenes (Fabricius, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae), Crispin S. Guppy Nov 2019

Designation Of A Neotype For Oeneis Melissa (Fabricius, 1775) And A Lectotype For Oeneis Polixenes (Fabricius, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae), Crispin S. Guppy

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The Oeneis melissa (Fabricius, 1775) “neotype” designations of Lukhtanov and Eitschberger (2000; 2001) do not meet several critical requirements of the ICZN and are therefore invalid. In addition, the locality data is too vague to be taxonomically useful, their “neotype” specimen is a specimen of the taxon generally known as O. melissa semplei, and acceptance of their specimen as neotype would change the meaning of the taxon Oeneis melissa. Hence, I reject their neotype designation. A neotype Oeneis melissa (Fabricius, 1775) is designated from Nain, Labrador with careful consideration of the Articles of the International Code of Zoological …

Awareness Of Sex Offender Registration Policies And Self-Reported Sexual Offending In A Community Sample Of Adolescents, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Hayley M. D. Cleary

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Sex offender registration laws are widely implemented, increasingly restrictive, and intended to serve both specific and general deterrent functions. Most states have some form of policy mechanism to place adolescents on sex offender registries, yet it remains unclear whether adolescents possess the requisite policy awareness to be deterred from sexual offending. This study examined awareness of sex offender registration as a potential sanction and its cross-sectional association with engagement in several registrable sexual behaviors (sexting, indecent exposure, sexual solicitation, and forcible touching) in a community sample of 144 adolescents. Results revealed that many adolescents were unaware that these behaviors could …

My Coppa Runneth Over: Ccpa Adds To Children’S Online Privacy Protections, Katie Riley

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

The Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) is currently accepting public comments on the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) as part of their review process for a pending proactive legislative update. COPPA is not due for review until 2023 but because of the “rapid technological changes that impact the online children’s marketplace” the FTC believes it is imperative to reevaluate COPPA’s protections now. Although decades old, COPPA has increasingly made headlines, most recently as part of the FTC’s settlement with YouTube and their parent company, Google, for a $170 million fine—the largest COPPA fine ever levied—for alleged violations of the legislation. …

Regulation of photoreceptor phosphodiesterase (PDE6) activity is responsible for the speed, sensitivity, and recovery of the photoresponse during visual signaling in vertebrate photoreceptor cells. It is hypothesized that the physiological differences in the light responsiveness of rods and cones may result in part from differences in the structure and regulation of the distinct isoforms of rod and cone PDE6. Although rod and cone PDE6 catalytic subunits share a similar domain organization consisting of tandem GAF domains (GAFa and GAFb) and a catalytic domain, cone PDE6 is a homodimer whereas the rod PDE6 catalytic dimer is composed of two homologous catalytic …

Biology Faculty Publications

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) house a taxonomically diverse microbiota that includes environmentally acquired bacteria, maternally transmitted symbiotic bacteria, and pathogenic African trypanosomes. Sodalis glossinidius, which is a facultative symbiont that resides intra and extracellularly within multiple tsetse tissues, has been implicated as a mediator of trypanosome infection establishment in the fly’s gut. Tsetse’s gut-associated population of Sodalis are subjected to marked temperature fluctuations each time their ectothermic fly host imbibes vertebrate blood. The molecular mechanisms that Sodalis employs to deal with this heat stress are unknown. In this study, we examined the thermal tolerance and heat shock response of …

Affordability Of Course Materials In Higher Education: Exploring An Equity Issue, Grace Allbaugh, Anne Shelley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The ever-increasing cost of textbooks is making it more challenging for college students to afford necessary class resources. While all students pursuing a college degree are affected by textbook costs, the impact is greatest on students from low-income families. Milner Library staff, who work to provide affordable academic resources and support learning on campus through many collaborations, are in a unique position to assist in addressing this problem.

Representatives from Milner Library will discuss the ways in which textbook affordability became a problem and how it impacts different groups on ISU’s campus; steps the library is taking to increase access …

Improving Access To Social Care Services Following Acquired Brain Injury: A Needs Analysis., T Odumuyiwa, M Kennedy, A Norman, M Holloway, S Freya, F Hannah, D Hilary

School of Psychology

Context: Survivors of acquired brain injury (ABI) experience long-term cognitive, behavioural, psychological and social consequences often overlooked by health and social care providers, as are the implications for family members. Objective: To improve understanding of 1) the long-term community rehabilitation needs of ABI survivors and their families, and 2) their experiences of community health and social care provision within the United Kingdom. Method: A mixed-method, predominantly qualitative, approach was employed using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews in a two-stage design. Stage one: Seventy-six participants (31 ABI specialist professionals, 26 family members and 19 survivors) completed an online survey analysed using conventional …

The Impact Of Msaabcr On Sara-Associated Phenotypes Is Different In Divergent Clinical Isolates Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Joseph S. Rom, Aura M. Ramirez, Karen E. Beenken, Gyan S. Sahukhal, Mohamed O. Elasri, Mark S. Smeltzer Nov 2019

The Impact Of Msaabcr On Sara-Associated Phenotypes Is Different In Divergent Clinical Isolates Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Joseph S. Rom, Aura M. Ramirez, Karen E. Beenken, Gyan S. Sahukhal, Mohamed O. Elasri, Mark S. Smeltzer

Faculty Publications

The staphylococcal accessory regulator (sarA) plays an important role in Staphylococcus aureus infections including osteomyelitis, and the msaABCR operon has been implicated as an important factor in modulating expression of sarA. Thus, we investigated the contribution of msaABCR to sarA-associated phenotypes in the S. aureus clinical isolates LAC and UAMS-1. Mutation of msaABCR resulted in reduced production of SarA and a reduced capacity to form a biofilm in both strains. Biofilm formation was enhanced in a LAC msa mutant by restoring the production of SarA, but this was not true in a UAMS-1 msa mutant. Similarly, …
