Piloting Journalistic Learning In A Rural Trump-Supportive Community: A Reverse Mentorship Approach, Ed Madison Nov 2019

Piloting Journalistic Learning In A Rural Trump-Supportive Community: A Reverse Mentorship Approach, Ed Madison

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Partisan politics challenge educators to determine how best to navigate discussions of controversial subjects within their classrooms. This can be particularly true for new educators in the early stages of developing their confidence and classroom management skills. This qualitative case study uses situated learning and the communities of practice theoretical constructs to investigate a new approach to educator training and co-facilitation. The new approach places recent journalism school college graduates in classrooms alongside teachers to foster real-time professional development through a process best described as reverse mentoring. The model could potentially provide educators with new pedagogical strategies during divisive political …

“Deeper Than Rap”: Cultivating Racial Identity And Critical Voices Through Hip-Hop Recording Practices In The Music Classroom, Jabari M. Evans

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Using a pilot program in one Chicago elementary school as a case study, this article reports findings of an ethnographic investigation on the impact of Hip-hop based music education at the elementary school level. The findings describe how this program facilitated a process by which the youth participants were empowered through (a) identity building within a community of practice, (b) musical expression as internal critical dialogue and an external critical voice and, (c) a classroom ethos supportive of expression related to contemporary Black youth subjectivity. The findings of this study suggest that implementation of Rap music making as an in-school …

History Of Youth Media Production In Maine 1960-2010, Gemma A.P. Scott Nov 2019

History Of Youth Media Production In Maine 1960-2010, Gemma A.P. Scott

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Research in media literacy seeks to understand multiple branches of inquiry, including the practice of media production. Youth in Maine have produced media independently and in organized venues for more than 50 years. This paper describes results from surveying primary source materials produced by youth in Maine between 1960 and the 2000s. Research started with media artifacts, looking to primary source materials to understand what, if anything, can be revealed from their content. A deep dive into the provenance of archival collections uncovered stories of a local history of youth media production, and expanded the inquiry to identify who was …

News Literacy And Fake News Curriculum: School Librarians’ Perceptions Of Pedagogical Practices, Lesley Farmer Nov 2019

News Literacy And Fake News Curriculum: School Librarians’ Perceptions Of Pedagogical Practices, Lesley Farmer

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The high profile of fake news reveals underlying trends in the production and consumption of news. While news literacy is a lifelong skill, the logical time to start teaching such literacy is in K-12 educational settings, so that all people have the opportunity to learn and practice news literacy. School librarians can play a critical role in helping students gain news literacy competence. This study investigated the needs for K-12 students to be news literate and their current level of skills as perceived by in-service teachers and school librarians in California. Respondents thought that their students were most competent at …

Automatic Selection Of Preferred Images, Lachlan “Locke” Dunn, Daniel Citron Nov 2019

Automatic Selection Of Preferred Images, Lachlan “Locke” Dunn, Daniel Citron

Defensive Publications Series

Image-hosting services and camera apps can select images for highlighting or as the best shot from a burst of shots based on criteria such as lighting conditions, blur (or lack thereof), whether people in the image are smiling, whether their eyes are open, etc. However, the selection of images is not based on user preferences, e.g., that indicate whether a user likes or dislikes an image. This disclosure describes techniques that enable a user to specify examples of favorite images. With user permission, examples provided by the user are used to surface similar images, e.g., images that match the user’s …

Predicted Application Preload Based On Context, Collin Irwin, Rachel Hausmann, Joe Rothlin

Defensive Publications Series

A computing device (e.g., a mobile phone, camera, tablet computer, etc.) uses an application preload prediction model (e.g., an artificial intelligence model) for preloading an application. The computing device may execute an application that employs a user interface to facilitate human-machine interaction. The computing device may collect contextual user data and use a prediction model (e.g., an application preload prediction module) to analyze the collected contextual data to determine and predict an application to preload in background mode even with the computing device’s screen locked. For example, a user device (e.g. mobile phone) with a touch screen predicts a user’s …

Using Surrogate Partner Therapy In Counseling: Treatment Considerations, Kelly Emelianchik-Key, Kimberleigh Stickney

Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education

When working with clients on issues of sexuality, clinicians often avoid the treatment approach of surrogate partner therapy due to lack of information and understanding. Surrogate partner therapy is a grey area within legal and ethical boundaries of various mental health professional associations. This article offers an intensive exploration of surrogate partner therapy, including its history, ethical considerations, benefits, and challenges. Best practices and treatment considerations when working with a surrogate partner therapist are discussed. Although there is a lack of research and evidence-based practice information, the available literature demonstrates that surrogate partner therapy is an effective intervention that can …

Clinical Implications In Vaginal Orgasm Response, Lindsey M. Brown Mccormick, Sherry Todd, Laura Schmuldt, Kathryn Russ, Cristen Wathen

Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education

Previous research has shown that counselors feel uncomfortable addressing clients’ sexual concerns due to a lack of education on topics related to human sexuality. Various studies have attempted to identify the characteristics of vaginal orgasm, including whether women and other people with vaginas (PWV) can achieve different kinds of orgasms. The current study examines responses to participants surveyed across the United States on their orgasm response and compares responses of participants who achieved orgasm through masturbation and those who achieved orgasm through sex with a partner to determine whether PWV experience one kind of orgasm during masturbation and experience a …

The Use Of Technology In Sexual Exploration Among A Rape Culture Youth, Kelley R. Holladay, W. Bryce Hagedorn

Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education

The present investigation sought to address the gap of research surrounding rape myth acceptance attitudes and cyber-sexual assault (CBSA). Researchers examined data collected from a college sample of 94 undergraduate psychology students. The purpose of this investigation was to explore whether this sample of college students reported any potential stereotypes pertaining to cyber-sexual assault victims and whether the college students utilized technology for sexual exploration (e.g., creation, distribution, and receiving of sexually explicit material). In addition to identifying cyber-sexual victims, this study explored the correlation of gender with those responses. Results are reported, and suggestions for counselors are offered. The …

The People Of The Cumberland Plateau: Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow Nov 2019

The People Of The Cumberland Plateau: Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow

Symposium of Student Scholars

The area of East Tennessee that lies between the Appalachian and Cumberland Mountains is called the Cumberland Plateau. This area reaches from Chattanooga to Bristol. Many people not from this region label it as redneck, back-woods, or hillbilly. Many don’t consider it to be a place that holds modern values, such as conservation and education. Through archival research, I will study this area during the Great Depression to explore how this place’s reality is different.

During one generation, the Plateau changed from a place defined by isolation and limited education to a hub of scientific research and a major provider …

A Study On Social Media's Influence Upon The Evolution Of Slang Nov 2019

A Study On Social Media's Influence Upon The Evolution Of Slang

Symposium of Student Scholars

As social media platforms become increasingly prevalent in our society, they have begun to heavily influence the ways in which we communicate with each other. Particularly fascinating is the effect of social media sites and texting upon slang, which has evolved significantly over the past few decades. Therefore, I am researching why slang is so prevalent in our society, as well as how and why it has changed as a result of social media. My project also explores the phenomena of how online platforms have influenced the connotations of certain words so that they later become slang terms. Because both …

Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Asian American English Nov 2019

Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Asian American English

Symposium of Student Scholars

According to the United Stated Census Bureau, the population of Asians in the United States has increased from 12 million in 2005 to 17 million in 2016. As populations of minority races in the U.S. grow, so does the representation of them in popular culture and mass media. From ABC’s TV show Fresh Off the Boat to the rising generation of Asian American Youtubers, a wave of Asian American linguistic and languaging presence in today’s entertainment is higher than ever before. In my presentation, I will discuss a close analysis of sociolinguistics connected to these representations spoken by contemporary Asian …

Understanding Second Grader’S Computational Thinking Skills In Robotics Through Their Individual Traits, Youngkyun Baek, Dazhi Yang, Yibo Fan

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study investigated the relationship between the personal traits and computational thinking skills of second graders within the context of robotics activities. The hypothesized model showed that learning preference, intrinsic motivation, and self-efficacy were the main predictors of coding achievement and computational thinking skills, while no direct relationship was found between learning preference, intrinsic, or extrinsic motivation. The final path analysis revealed that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation predict self-efficacy, self-efficacy predicts coding achievement, and coding achievement predicts computational thinking skills. Another important finding was the strong impact of self-efficacy on coding achievement as well as computational thinking skills. Results are …

The Digital Services Tax As A Tax On Location-Specific Rent, Wei Cui, Nigar Hashimzade Nov 2019

The Digital Services Tax As A Tax On Location-Specific Rent, Wei Cui, Nigar Hashimzade

All Faculty Publications

In 2018, the European Council and the UK and Spanish governments each proposed to introduce a Digital Services Tax (DST), to be levied on the revenue of large digital platforms from advertising, online intermediation, and/or the transmission of data. We offer a rationalization of the DST as a tax on location-specific rent (LSR). That is, just as many countries already levy royalties on rent from extracting natural resources, one can think of the DST as levied on rent earned by digital platforms from particular locations. We provide stylized illustrations of how platform rent can be assigned to specific locations, even …
