The Challenge Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema Nov 2019

The Challenge Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We all have a sense of what leadership is, but as one author said, defining it is like nailing jelly to a tree. Everybody has a pretty good idea of what it is.  You can ask little kids what leadership is and they give you a pretty good idea.  But, defining it continues to be difficult, especially for empirical study.

Cultural Competence: Reflections And Self-Efficacy In A Preservice Teacher-Education Program, Jennifer Fernandez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore preservice teachers’ sense of confidence working with English Learners, and the ability to transfer that confidence to self-efficacy in cultural competence. Specifically, the study evaluated an infused ESOL endorsement program integrated into a teacher preparation program at a local Florida state college. The qualitative study derived information from retrospective data from past assignments in two ESOL specific courses required for students in two different programs, Elementary Education, and Exceptional Student Education. Additionally, data were analyzed from semi-structured interviews in which five preservice teachers participated.

Findings uncovered four major themes and multiple subthemes. …

The Death Of Physical Media: The Dangers Of Streaming And The End Of The Home Library, Amelia Eichler Nov 2019

The Death Of Physical Media: The Dangers Of Streaming And The End Of The Home Library, Amelia Eichler

University Honors Theses

This thesis aims to provide an extensive look at the history of collecting film within the home, starting from pre-cinematic optical toys to today's use of streaming platforms. There is an extensive knowledge gap in the history of film collecting. Much of the information is anecdotal and providing an extensive background will close this gap. Contrasting the different technologies in the home allows for people to see how film collecting practices have evolved. Streaming is currently a new phenomena that has taken over the industry and changed the structure of the home library. Rather than aid the home library, this …

Business Continuity Planning At Portland State University: An Adaptive Approach To Planning For Service Recovery After A Disruption, Heather Roberts Nov 2019

Business Continuity Planning At Portland State University: An Adaptive Approach To Planning For Service Recovery After A Disruption, Heather Roberts

University Honors Theses

This paper examines a case study following the development of business continuity plans at Portland State University (PSU). The PSU business continuity planning team explored a new theory of Adaptive Business Continuity and evaluated its usefulness in an academic service industry. The business continuity project team set out to answer these critical questions: 'Could the Adaptive Business Continuity Theory work for PSU? Was it up to the challenge of many departments with varied regulations, rhythms and stakeholders? Could the Adaptive Business Continuity Theory be implemented by a limited emergency management staff? Would there be enough buy-in from the PSU department …

Scotland And The Geometric Imagination, Mike Hill Nov 2019

Scotland And The Geometric Imagination, Mike Hill

Studies in Scottish Literature

Review of: Matthew Wickman. Literature After Euclid: The Geometric Imagination in the Long Scottish Enlightenment. Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016.The review praises Wickman's "extraordinary book," designed to “throw a wrench into grand narratives about modernity,” summarizing its wide-ranging argument about the centrality of spatial, visual and geometric thought in what Wickman calls "the long looping eighteenth century," in Scottish philosophy, education and literature, and commenting briefly on the implications of Wickman's argument for "how literary canons are made" and "the dynamics of disciplines."

Physical Activity Level And Insulin Resistance In 6,500 Nhanes Adults: The Role Of Abdominal Obesity, James R Fowler Nov 2019

Physical Activity Level And Insulin Resistance In 6,500 Nhanes Adults: The Role Of Abdominal Obesity, James R Fowler

Theses and Dissertations

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study investigated insulin resistance (IR) variation across physical activity (PA) levels in U.S. adults. METHODS: MET-minutes were utilized to quantify PA using 2 methods: 4 categories were based on relative MET-minutes, and 5 were based on U.S. PA guidelines. IR was indexed using the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). Effect modification was tested by dividing waist circumferences into sex-specific quartiles, and then evaluating the relationship between PA and HOMA-IR within each quartile separately. RESULTS: Relative PA was associated with HOMA-IR after controlling for demographic and demographic and lifestyle covariates (F = 11.5, P < 0.0001 and F = 6.0, P = 0.0012, respectively). Adjusting for demographic and demographic and lifestyle covariates also revealed relationships between guideline-based PA and HOMA-IR (F = 8.0, P < 0.0001 and F = 4.9, P = 0.0017, respectively). Controlling for waist circumference with the other covariates nullified the relationship between PA and HOMA-IR. Effect modification testing showed that when the sample was delimited to adults with extra-large waists (Quartile 4), relative (F = 5.6, P = 0.0019), and guideline-based PA (F = 3.7, P = 0.0098) and HOMA-IR were related. PA and HOMA-IR were not related within the other quartiles. CONCLUSION: High levels of PA may play a meaningful role in glucose and insulin metabolism in those with abdominal obesity, but not in adults with smaller waists.

Monkey Mind: Everyday Observations Of Mental Illness, Mikhayla Dunaj Nov 2019

Monkey Mind: Everyday Observations Of Mental Illness, Mikhayla Dunaj

Honors Theses

When I first was able to identify that I dealt with anxiety, I was 18 years old. At the time, I didn’t know how to explain it, and assumed it was only because I was in an unhealthy relationship, after already having been in an abusive one. At the end of my third year at Western Michigan University, I suffered a mental breakdown and started counseling.

The process of counseling was difficult, because as I opened up more, I realized that I had spent a majority of my life stuffing down things that were actually anxiety symptoms, assuming that it …

Critique Of European Union Intervention In Mediterranean Migration: An Examination Of How Territory Can Be Used To Understand Migration Phenomena, Erin B. Bangs Nov 2019

Critique Of European Union Intervention In Mediterranean Migration: An Examination Of How Territory Can Be Used To Understand Migration Phenomena, Erin B. Bangs

University Honors Theses

Migration has existed virtually as long as humans have. Migration as a social phenomenon is nothing new, however, the way migration and migrants themselves have come to be treated in the legal and political sphere has evolved over time. Today, a decent majority of democratic state governments view and respond negatively to migrants attempting to enter their borders. This is painfully obvious in the case of Mediterranean migration, primarily from Africa to Europe by way of the Mediterranean Sea. What is happening in the Mediterranean is a humanitarian crisis. This work critiques the intervention of the European Union in the …

Corpus Planning And Tri-Media Enhancement Of Intellectualized Filipino For Mass Communication, Perla S. Carpio, Ricardo D. Carpio Nov 2019

Corpus Planning And Tri-Media Enhancement Of Intellectualized Filipino For Mass Communication, Perla S. Carpio, Ricardo D. Carpio

Social Sciences and Development Review

In the Philippines, education, history and topography dictated why the medium of communication in many fields including broadcast and print media is English. But when Filipino was constitutionalized in 1987, corpus planning in the national language has given of great importance by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) to intellectualized and create a standardized jargon for mass communication. Though translated lexes were printed in Filipino books and taught in higher education institutions (HEIs.) there is no measure on the usability and acceptability of the lexes. Following Haugen’s and Ferguson’s language planning concepts this paper focused on the utilization importance of …

Using An Lms In Teaching English: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Medical Sciences Students’ Evaluations And Suggestions, Iman Alizadeh

The Qualitative Report

In this study, I aimed to discover Iranian medical sciences students’ evaluation of using a Learning Management System (LMS) in teaching English and to collect their suggestions for using the system more efficiently. To collect data, I conducted semi-structured interviews with 38 students. The themes emerging from the qualitative content analysis of the students’ responses were (1) technical advantages (accessibility, and online homework bank), (2) educational gains (learning gains, benefits for professors, and professor-student interaction), (3) logistical benefits (optimizing class time, task management, and logistical support), (4) educational shortcomings (limited instruction, correction and feedback, and academic misconduct), (5) technical limitations …

A Dating App Autoethnography: Presenting Myself As A Researcher And User, Janelle Ward Nov 2019

A Dating App Autoethnography: Presenting Myself As A Researcher And User, Janelle Ward

The Qualitative Report

Matchmaking mobile applications, or dating apps, have become hugely popular in recent years, with millions worldwide swiping through potential romantic partners. The literature on technologically mediated dating has explored how people manage impressions but has rarely taken an autoethnographic perspective: How does the author, both a researcher of dating apps and a user herself, experience self-presentation? In this paper, I first introduce a theoretical focus on impression management on dating apps. Next, I explain the choice of autoethnography as a method. Drawing from various source materials like personal journaling and chats with matches, I present two autoethnographic pieces: one focusing …

The Role Of Nipsnap1 In Oxidative Stress, Maha Attar Nov 2019

The Role Of Nipsnap1 In Oxidative Stress, Maha Attar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

NIPSNAP1 (4-nitrophenyl phosphatase domain and non-neuronal SNAP25-like protein homolog1) is an evolutionarily conserved mitochondrial protein that interacts with the cytoplasmic domain of the Alzheimer's Disease (AD) amyloid precursor protein (APP). NIPSNAP1 interaction with APP may contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction and possibly to neurodegeneration associated with AD. To investigate the molecular and cellular role of NIPSNAP1, we created a NIPSNAP1 knockdown cell line using shRNA lentiviral strategy. Immunoblot analysis showed that one shRNA construct reduced NIPSNAP1 protein levels by approximately 85%. Reduction of NIPSNAP1 protein required at least 10 days after shRNA lentiviral transduction, suggesting that NIPSNAP1 protein is highly stable …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapy is a promising approach for treatment of a wide range of cancers, including breast cancers that display variable phenotypic features. To explore the general utility of siRNA therapy to control aberrant expression of genes in breast cancer, we conducted a detailed analysis of siRNA delivery and silencing response in vitro in 6 separate breast cancer cell models (MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-231-KRas-CRM, MCF-7, AU565, MDA-MB-435 and MDA-MB-468 cells). Using lipopolymers for siRNA complexation and delivery, we found a large variation in siRNA delivery efficiency depending on the specific lipopolymer used for siRNA complexation and delivery. Some lipopolymers were …
