Fabricated Forensics: Examining An Undergraduate Population’S Ability To Detect Fallacies In Crime-Based Media, Conner Davis
Senior Capstone Theses
My research examines the effects of general education on students’ perspectives of the CSI effect. The CSI effect is a phenomenon in which people’s perceptions of criminal investigation are distorted from the truth because of the media’s portrayal of criminal investigation. The study sample includes undergraduate students enrolled in a Mid-Atlantic University. To quantify the degrees in which subjects are susceptible to the CSI effect, the subjects will be measured on their ability to identify basic forensic investigation flaws portrayed in three different television series. Subjects were given a worksheet, exposed to a fifteen-minute video compilation, and were told to …

The Relationship Among Health Locus-Of-Control, Value Of Health, And Health Behavior In Adolescents, Phyllis K. More
Dissertations
This study explores selected personality factors which may explain part of the variance in health behavior in adolescents. Theoretical and empirical evidence suggested that internal health expectancy and high value of health should be related to adolescents' choices of health behavior. Health expectancy was measured by the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales (Wallston, Wallston & DeVellis, 1978), value of health by the Value Survey (Wallston, Maides & Wallston, 1976), and adolescent health behavior by the Student Lifestyle Survey (McKillip & Taylor, 1979). The Student Lifestyle Survey measures ten components of health behavior as follows: (1) alcohol use, (2) smoking, …

Case Comment To The Judgement Of The Court Of Justice Of 14 March 2019 Skanska Industrial Solutions And Others (Case C-724/17), Vasiliki Fasoula
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
In the tradition of civil law Member States, civil liability issues are linked to the legal entity that caused a damage, with the exception of lifting the corporate veil. The Finnish competition authority imposed fines to Finnish companies that participated in an asphalt cartel. Following that decision, an action for damages was lodged for infringement of Article 101 TFEU that ultimately led to the Skanska ruling. The European judge completes and specifies some ambiguities of the Damages Directive. From a holistic point of view of the objective pursued by both public and private enforcement of European competition law rules, the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Temperature increases during dielectrophoresis (DEP) can affect the response of biological entities, and ignoring the effect can result in misleading analysis. The heating mechanism of a DEP device is typically considered to be the result of Joule heating and is overlooked without an appropriate analysis. Our experiment and analysis indicate that the heating mechanism is due to the dielectric loss (Debye relaxation). A temperature increase between interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) has been measured with an integrated micro temperature sensor between IDEs to be as high as 70 °C at 1.5 MHz with a 30 Vpp applied voltage to our ultra-low …

Grassroots-Initiated Policy Advocacy In A Transitional Democracy: A Case Study, Cho Myint Naing
Capstone Collection
While it is acknowledged that public participation in the policy-making process is a cornerstone of democracy, it is unclear how this takes shape in transitioning democracies. Myanmar is currently transitioning from over five decades of military rule to a civilian-led, democratically-elected government. Consequently, public space has opened up, allowing Myanmar citizens to express their opinions and needs vis-à-vis policies in multiple sectors and to engage with policymakers. The majority of these advocacy efforts has been spearheaded by civil society actors, who have been supporting citizens in expressing themselves and facilitating opportunities for direct engagement. This paper is a case study …

Explicitation Vs. Implicitation: Discourse Markersin English-Into-Arabic Translation, Mohammed Farghal, Abdullah Samateh
Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات
The present paper aims to examine Blum-Kulka’s (1986) claim that cases of explicitation in the target text (TT) correspond to cases of implicitation in the source text (ST). A corpus of three discourse markers (DMs) in an Arabic translation is examined against the DMs in the English ST. The findings show that there are three types of correspondence in DMs: explicitation to explicitation, explicitation to implicitation, and explicitation to zero equivalents. The paper concludes that the syndetic nature of Arabic discourse, unlike the asyndetic nature of its English counterpart, accounts for the presence of several cases of DMs which do …

Mitochondria maintain a diversity of roles central to the array of neuronal functions and survival, as implied by the ubiquitous evidence of mitochondrial roles in neuronal developmental, aging, and disease progression. The canonical function of mitochondria is to produce ATP, a critical and dominant molecule used by cells for energy requiring activities. However, since their discovery more than a century ago, mitochondria have been implicated in a vast collection of cellular processes, largely driven by their expanded function beyond metabolism, including secondary messenger signaling, cytoplasmic Ca2+ signaling, fatty acid oxidation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and protein scaffolding. More recently, …

The nucleotide pool is significantly more susceptible to oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) compared to genomic DNA, due to DNA being more protected by the double helix and nucleosome packing. The NUDIX pyrophosphatase, MutT Homolog 1 (MTH1), maintains nucleotide pool integrity by hydrolyzing oxidized purines thus preventing their genomic incorporation. If incorporated into DNA the accumulation of these oxidized purines can lead to DNA strand breaks, genomic instability, and ultimately cell death. Our prior work has shown that MTH1 is critical in facilitating multiple pro-tumorigenic phenotypes in oncogenic RAS-mutated cancer cells, with its depletion leading to decreased …

Is Innovative Auditory Technology Here To Stay, Krish Galani
Student Work
Innovation is often seen as a necessary constant throughout history, as it is our survival mechanism, evolving from humanity’s inherent ignorance/flaws. However, as society pushes for innovation at an ever-increasing rate, should we be concerned about its implications on the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) in the United States? The DHH has been quite sensitive to this surplus of innovation, with an increasing amount of ‘auditory aid related’ technologies being marketed every day. What does this mean for deaf culture? More importantly, how will these innovations shape the future of deaf behavior and linguistics?
