Reimagining Gender Violence: Understanding Community-Based Organizations’ Use Of Restorative And Transformative Justices As Social Change Strategies, Ahjané D. Billingsley
Reimagining Gender Violence: Understanding Community-Based Organizations’ Use Of Restorative And Transformative Justices As Social Change Strategies, Ahjané D. Billingsley
Open Access Dissertations
Currently, the “violence against women” (VAW) frame that informs dominant responses to gender violence has had limited success. This frame often excludes victims who are men, gender diverse, and those of sexual minorities, and the omissions have resulted in collateral harms to victims and communities. Scholars and community psychologists have noted the need for multilevel, ecological, and multidimensional gender violence interventions and preventions. Some community-based organizations are responding to the limitations of the VAW frame by using restorative justice and/or transformative justice/community accountability social change strategies within social settings to understand and address gender violence. This study used interpretive phenomenology …

Banks Community Emergency Response Team (Cert) Project Proposal, Donna Vandendries
CUP Undergraduate Research
This proposal examines the challenges the Banks Fire District is faced with if a catastrophic event, such as a Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) earthquake were to strike the Pacific Northwest. The District has concerns surrounding the potential response and recovery challenges during a major disaster. The District is open to expanding its jurisdiction's capabilities with a solution that would benefit the District and Banks community members without compromising the District mission and core values. The District realizes that due to the nature of a CSZ, it will not have the resource capability to respond to the emergency needs of the …

Final Master's Portfolio, Hammed Oluwadare Adejare
Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
This portfolio contains four related essays concerned with issues of race and migration in literary creations of diasporic African writers and film texts by African American film producers. The first essay offers a general exploration of contemporary African diasporic writings and the pervading Afropolitan politics of home and belonging. The next essay in the collection provides a theoretical grounding for this writing genre, tracing the connections between the theory, Afropolitanism, and earlier modes of theorizing global race relations such as postcolonialism and cosmopolitanism. The third essay explores the application of these theories to Teju Cole’s diasporic novel, Open City, explicating …

Don’T Give Up On Nuclear Energy, Daniel Gertner
Don’T Give Up On Nuclear Energy, Daniel Gertner
Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies
The nuclear power plant failures at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl in the late 1970s and 1980s split Americans into two passionate camps. For some, nuclear plants posed serious threats to both environmental and national security, and, for others, nuclear energy remained the most viable path to clean, reliable power in the United States. But following the fervent debates of the late 20th century, the national conversation around nuclear power stagnated. A few ardent advocates and opponents notwithstanding, nuclear power left the public eye. Popular energy debates—especially among young people—now center around flashier topics like the Green New Deal, electric …

Bending Behavior Of Concrete Beams With Fiber/Epoxy Composite Rebar, Kolten Dewayne Rice
Bending Behavior Of Concrete Beams With Fiber/Epoxy Composite Rebar, Kolten Dewayne Rice
Theses and Dissertations
This research explores the use of carbon/epoxy and fiberglass/epoxy fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite rebar manufactured on a three-dimensional braiding machine for use as reinforcement in concrete beams under four-point bending loads. Multiple tows of prepreg composite fibers were pulled to form a unidirectional core. The core was consolidated with spirally wound Kevlar fibers which were designed to also act as ribs to increase pullout strength. The rebar was cured at 121â—¦C (250â—¦F) in an inline oven while keeping tension on the fibers. Five configurations of reinforcing bars were used in this study as reinforcement in concrete beam specimens: carbon/epoxy rebar …

A Framework For Firm-Level Critical Material Supply Management And Mitigation, Gillian A. Griffin
A Framework For Firm-Level Critical Material Supply Management And Mitigation, Gillian A. Griffin
Theses
Organizations of all sizes are vulnerable to critical material supply disruptions. Although there is a significant body of literature that examines how large entities such as nations and governments can assess and mitigate criticality, there is very little work that addresses firm-level criticality in a way that is actionable for businesses. This work uses literature review and case study analysis to understand the impact of critical material supply risk at the firm level, and to determine salient internal indicators. A total of 42 criticality studies were reviewed and the findings were used to develop a framework to assess and monitor …
Note To Self, Chloe Renee Hayes
Note To Self, Chloe Renee Hayes
Theses
“note to self” is a 2D animated film completed as the thesis project for my MFA degree. This film uses experimental imagery and often abstract visual metaphor to tell a narrative story that discusses suicide, self-harm, depression, trauma, mental health, and the complicated issues surrounding these subjects.
“note to self” tells the story of a teenage girl fighting through her struggles and uncertainties in the metaphysical space of her own mind. Sienna, the protagonist, has resolved to kill herself and is working through her conflicted feelings to rationally explain why. Posed as a conversation with a part of her own …

Addressing Childhood Obesity In A Rural Community Using Motivational Interviewing, Chituru Uwaoma
Addressing Childhood Obesity In A Rural Community Using Motivational Interviewing, Chituru Uwaoma
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract
Purpose: Childhood obesity is a significant health problem associated with increased adult morbidity and mortality. Rural areas like Central Valley California demonstrate disproportionate rates of obesity. Children in rural and underserved populations are at a higher risk of developing obesity. Data suggest that obesity is often under-addressed during routine health care visits. Primary care practitioners are the first point of health care contact and have a unique opportunity to prevent and address obesity through health monitoring and education.
In response to escalating rates of obesity, clinical recommendations have been established for primary care providers including the use of patient-centered …

An Investigation Of The Chemistry, Thermodynamics And Catalytic Activity Of Molybdenum Carbides, Shanti Kiran Nayak
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
These studies investigate the chemistry and stability of molybdenum carbides as an electrocatalyst. Due to their unique electronic properties, molybdenum carbides are purposed as electrocatalysts for reaction systems such as hydrogen evolution reaction, bifunctional water splitting and CO oxidation.
In this study, various synthesis processes were utilized to produce different types of molybdenum carbide with varying properties of particle size, surface area and excess carbon. The samples characterized by XRD accompanied by Whole Profile Fitting, Electron Microscopy, Gas Adsorption (surface area) and XPS.
These synthesis processes were refined using fundamental thermodynamic analyses. These analyses highlight regions of stability of different …
Implications Of The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem For Wildfire Analyses, Timothy P. Nagle-Mcnaughton, Xi Gong, Jose A. Constantine
Implications Of The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem For Wildfire Analyses, Timothy P. Nagle-Mcnaughton, Xi Gong, Jose A. Constantine
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Wildfires pose a danger to both ecologies and communities. To this end, many large-scale analyses of wildfire patterns and behavior rely on the aggregation of point data to polygons, typically those based on distinct disparate ecological areas. However, the sizes, shapes, andorientations of the polygons to which data are aggregated are not neutral factors in the resulting analysis. The influence of the aggregation polygons on calculated results is known as the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP), which is well-documented in the spatial statistics literature. Despite the documentation of the MAUP, relatively few wildfire studies consider the effects of the MAUP …
From Field To Film: Mosquito Surveillance And Survey Of Us Adults' Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Arthropod-Borne Disease Vectors, Justine Laviolette
From Field To Film: Mosquito Surveillance And Survey Of Us Adults' Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Arthropod-Borne Disease Vectors, Justine Laviolette
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mosquito-borne disease is a public health challenge that warrants an active surveillance program for the identification of mosquito populations and the education of the public for prevention and protection against disease-transmitting arthropods. The communication of science to the public is necessary to prevent disease, change behavior, and promote a dialog between scientists and the public.
People are accustomed to high quality entertainment, which begs the question, “If we made science more entertaining, would the public be more interested?”
To address these issues, the objectives of this study are: 1) identify mosquito species and abundance at the US Meat Animal Research …
Using Components Of American Sign Language To Better The Quality Of Life And Communication Access Of Elderly Persons In Assisted Living, Josie Arnett
Honors Theses
One of the most common conditions that affects people as they get older is presbycusis, the gradual loss of hearing (“Age-Related Hearing Loss”). Because of this, components of American Sign Language (ASL) were taught to elderly persons at Stillwater Senior Living assisted living facility in Edwardsville, IL with the purpose of improving access to communication. Helpful words to know in assisted living such as “want, food, hurt, and better” were taught. In addition, students were taught to feel comfortable with gestures such as pointing or thumbs up as a way to communicate. After learning how to sign certain words, students …

Do It Yourself: Women And Lgbtq+ Musicians And Promoters In The Diy Midwest Music Scene, Morgan W. Matzen
Honors Thesis
In certain parts of the Midwest “DIY,” or the underground/alternative music scene, there is not enough representation of women, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals in music, whether onstage as a band or musician, or in venue ownership and leadership. This study looks at where these diverse people are, and the setbacks they’ve faced along the way of becoming a musician, promoter or venue owner. Three emerging themes through this journalistic research include all-ages venues and music scenes as integral to getting people involved in music; a “DIY” attitude or ethos as a push for these musicians and promoters to …

Abstract: In order to analyze the fire evacuation efficiency of vertical ship lift, the influence of population characteristics on evacuation is analyzed quantitatively from three aspects, such as age structure, population density and flow velocity. According to the emergency evacuation path of vertical ship lift, the three-stage evacuation time is divided into three parts. In order to obtain fire evacuation time, the model of vertical ship lift with the passenger ship is established and parameters of evacuation time are set up by using the simulation technology. The actual case of the Three Gorges ship lift shows:1) the evacuation …

Overrepresentation Of The Underrepresented: Gender Bias In Wikipedia, Anna Marinina
Overrepresentation Of The Underrepresented: Gender Bias In Wikipedia, Anna Marinina
Honors College Theses
The goal of our research is to determine if gender bias exists in Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a very large dataset that has been used to train artificial intelligence models. If a dataset that is being used for this purpose is biased, then the artificial intelligence model that was trained with it will be biased as well, therefore making biased decisions. For this reason, it is important to explore large datasets for any potential biases before they are used in machine learning. Since Wikipedia is ontologically structured, we used graph theory to create a network of all of the website’s categories …
