Pitman Asymptotic Efficiency (PAE) are studied, the critical values of the tests are tabulated for sample sizes n = 5(5)50, and the power estimates are calculated to assess the performance of the tests. Also a test of exponentiality versus RNBUmg f for right censored data is considered. The power estimates of the tests are simulated …
Good People Don't Need Medication: How Moral Character Beliefs Affect Medical Decision-Making, Sydney Elizabeth Scott, Justin F. Landy
Good People Don't Need Medication: How Moral Character Beliefs Affect Medical Decision-Making, Sydney Elizabeth Scott, Justin F. Landy
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
How do people make decisions? Prior research focuses on how people's cost-benefit assessments affect which medical treatments they choose. We propose that people also worry about what these health decisions signal about who they are. Across four studies, we find that medication is thought to be the "easy way out", signaling a lack of willpower and character. These moral beliefs lower the appeal of medications. Manipulating these beliefs--by framing medication as a signal of superior willpower or by highlighting the idea that treatment choice is just a preference--increases preferences for medication.

Pathogenic Resistance In Soil Microbes For Drug Discovery, Saachi Dalvi '20, Neha Maddali '20
Student Publications & Research
Antimicrobial resistance has become a prevalent phenomenon and now poses a great threat to public health. In the United States alone, more than 2 million citizens suffer from a disease related to antimicrobial resistance, of which an estimated 23,000 people will die per year.1 To combat the growing threat of such illnesses, several researchers have tested for new microbes from the soil that exhibit antimicrobial properties against these newly resistant pathogens. A study conducted by A.A. Elbendary and his research group collected soil isolates from Egypt and identified bacterial samples K. kristinae, K. rosea, S. griseus, and S. flaveolus as …

In developing countries, people with severe/chronic illnesses rely heavily on medicinal plants. Unfortunately, very little is known about the chemical composition of these plants, which means that their effect on diseases is unknown. One of the most popular medicinal plants in South Africa is the African Potato, which is used to treat Tuberculosis, a global health emergency in many developing countries. It is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties and can help with the symptoms of AIDS. While all of these uses have been cited for the plant, very few studies have been conducted to confirm the African Potato as …

Sub-Optimal Tracking In Switched Systems With Controlled Subsystems And Fixed-Mode Sequence Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni, Xingyong Song
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Optimal tracking in switched systems with controlled subsystem and Discrete-time (DT) dynamics is investigated. A feedback control policy is generated such that a) the system tracks the desired reference signal, and b) the optimal switching time instants are sought. For finding the optimal solution, approximate dynamic programming is used. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the solution.

Microbial aerobic oxidation is known to be a significant sink of marine methane (CH4), contributing to the relatively minor atmospheric release of this greenhouse gas over vast stretches of the ocean. However, the chemical kinetics of aerobic CH4 oxidation are not well established, making it difficult to predict and assess the extent that CH4 is oxidized in seawater following seafloor release. Here we investigate the kinetics of aerobic CH4 oxidation using mesocosm incubations of fresh seawater samples collected from seep fields in Hudson Canyon, U.S. Atlantic Margin and MC118, Gulf of Mexico to gain a fundamental chemical understanding of this …

Employment And Independent Living Skills Of Public School High School Deaf Students: Analyses Of The Transition Competence Battery Response Patterns, Pamela Luft
JADARA
The Transition Competence Battery was used to study employment and independent living skill preparation of 38 of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students from four public high school programs. Participants demonstrated substantial needs in performing standard computations, in recognizing common terminology and across several independent living competencies. Repeated measures ANOVA showed significant improvements in two subtest scores for employment subtests with none for independent living. Poor overall competency levels suggest that vocational rehabilitation counselors should expect some skill and training needs. This assessment may assist in identifying needs that impact career success.

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide and traditional treatments such as surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy may have limited benefits depending on the type of cancer and the stage at which it is diagnosed. Immunity is the state of protection against foreign pathogens or substances (i.e., antigens). Recent research into novel approaches to treatment has suggested that immunotherapy, which aims to optimize the body’s own natural responses to combating disease through various mechanisms, may be a promising strategy that can improve prognosis for certain cancer types that are refractory to other treatment options. Quantitative models simulating the dynamics …

Arsenoplatins - Potent Anticancer Agents Against Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Denana Miodragovic
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a more aggressive breast cancer with a poorer prognosis than other types of breast cancer. TNBC mortality is 42% higher in African American women compared to other American women, which is one of the most significant examples of racial disparity in oncology. TNBC does not express the common receptors estrogen and progesterone or the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), making targeted hormone therapies ineffective. Thus, there is an urgent medical need for the development of novel potential drug candidates for TNBC. In clinics, platinum-based regimes provide overall survival advantages for TNBC patients compared …

Internet Searching Behaviors Of Low Literacy Breast Cancer Survivors, Francisco D. Iacobelli, Ginger L. Dragon, Giselle Mazur, Judy Guitelman
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
Internet searching is a popular tool for patients to find health-related information. However, low literacy individuals are at a disadvantage with respect to their ability to evaluate online health information. When using common web search engines to find health information, behaviors such as misspelling, misappropriation of words and incomplete search queries can result in inadequate results and misleading information. The goal of this research is to understand the search strategies and common mistakes that low-literacy Latina breast cancer survivors exhibit when searching for information online in order to inform future information seeking interfaces. To explore search behaviors online we asked …
On The Apparent Attractive Interaction Between Colloidal Particles Of Like Charge, Stefan Tsonchev
On The Apparent Attractive Interaction Between Colloidal Particles Of Like Charge, Stefan Tsonchev
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
A new attractive force between colloidal particles of like charge has been discovered. This force is of entropic depletion origin, and is exhibited between colloidal particles in electrolyte solution. The attractive potential associated with this force is a function of the electrolyte concentration, and can have a minimum up to the order of -10 kT deep for certain parameters of the system. Implications of the force to various systems of interest will be discussed.
Newton’S Iteration At Nonisoated Solutions, Zhonggang Zeng
Newton’S Iteration At Nonisoated Solutions, Zhonggang Zeng
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
Newton’s iteration is arguably the most important and fundamental method for solving systems of nonlinear equations with a long and fascinating history. Its local quadratic convergence to isolated nonsingular solutions is well documented in the literature. It is also well-known that the iteration loses its quadratic rate of convergence, if it applies and converges at all, to nonisolated solutions with a dismal attainable accuracy in numerical computation. Even though solving systems of nonlinear equations is a standard topic in textbooks of numerical analysis, the elaboration has always been limited to isolated solutions. Models with nonisolated solutions frequently arise in applications. …
Monitoring The Breakdown Of Plastic Materials Under Ultraviolet And Visible Light, Samantha Brown-Xu
Monitoring The Breakdown Of Plastic Materials Under Ultraviolet And Visible Light, Samantha Brown-Xu
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
The accumulation of plastic waste in landfills and especially in water systems is a pressing environmental concern. Every year, roughly 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans, which over time can then break down into microplastics, less than a quarter inch in size, that are consumed by ocean wildlife. The plastic degradation can occur by mechanical means, but energy absorbed from sunlight is also involved in the breakdown of plastic materials. If the efficiency of this degradation was increased, solar energy could be used to eliminate plastic waste and regenerate fuels or chemical feedstocks. In this study, …

Integrating Problem Solving, Coding, Mathematics, And Pedagogy, John F. Erickson
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
We present a case study illustrating an integrated approach to the teaching of problem solving, computation, and mathematics. This approach combines ideas from Polya, Ross, and Moore about mathematical pedagogy with a heavy dose of computer assisted calculation in the spirit of experimental mathematics facilitated by the rapid prototyping environment of Mathematica which is ideal for an exploratory approach to learning. Essentially, students learn math and programming the same way mathematicians do research and we believe that this can scale all the way from grammar school to graduate school. To be more specific, we start with an elementary recreational math …
Children’S Cognitive Reflection Predicts Conceptual Understanding In Science And Mathematics, Andrew Young
Children’S Cognitive Reflection Predicts Conceptual Understanding In Science And Mathematics, Andrew Young
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
The Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT; Frederick, 2005) is the dominant measure of adult individual differences in analytic vs. intuitive cognitive style. The task was designed to measure a person's tendency to override and inhibit an intuitive response that is incorrect and engage in deliberate reflection that leads to a correct response. The CRT is a meaningful predictor of a diverse range of adult psychological and behavioral outcomes, including conceptual change in science and math learning (Shtulman & McCallum, 2014; Gómez-Chacón et al., 2014). The present research employed a newly developed CRT for children, the CRT-D (Young et al., 2018), to …

Over the past decades, the Internet has served as the backbone connecting people to others, places and things. With the sheer volume of information generated everyday, people can feel overwhelmed when having to make a selection among the multiple options that normally come up after a search or application request. For example, when searching for news articles regarding a particular topic, the search engine will present a number of results to you. When looking for some product on shopping websites, there are usually several pages of results that match the keywords. It can be very challenging for people to find …

Attention Restraint, Working Memory Capacity, And Mind Wandering: Do Emotional Valence Or Intentionality Matter?, Alexandra C. Nieto, Matthew S. Welhaf, Anum Mallick, Jonathan B. Banks
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
Attention restraint appears to mediate the relationship between working memory capacity (WMC) and mind wandering (Kane et al., 2016). Prior work has identifed two dimensions of mind wandering—emotional valence and intentionality. However, less is known about how WMC and attention restraint correlate with these dimensions. Te current study examined the relationship between WMC, attention restraint, and mind wandering by emotional valence and intentionality. A confrmatory factor analysis demonstrated that WMC and attention restraint were strongly correlated, but only attention restraint was related to overall mind wandering, consistent with prior fndings. However, when examining the emotional valence of mind wandering, attention …

Leaf shape in plants plays important roles in water use, canopy structure, and physiological tolerances to abiotic stresses; all important traits for the future development and sustainability of grapevine cultivation. Historically, researchers have used ampelography, the study of leaf shape in grapevines, to differentiate Vitis species and cultivars based on finite leaf attributes. However, ampelographic measurements have limitations and new methods for quantifying shape are now available. We paired an analysis of finite trait attributes with a 17-point landmark survey and generalized Procrustes analysis (GPA) to reconstruct grapevine leaves digitally from five interspecific hybrid mapping families. Using the reconstructed leaves, …

Lisa For Cosmologists: Calculating The Signal-To-Noise Ratio For Stochastic And Deterministic Sources, Tristan L. Smith, R. R. Caldwell
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
We present the steps to forecast the sensitivity of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) to both a stochastic gravitational wave background and deterministic wave sources. We show how to use these expressions to estimate the precision with which LISA can determine parameters associated with these sources. Tools are included to enable easy calculation of the signal-to-noise ratio and draw sensitivity curves. Benchmark values are given for easy comparison and checking of methods in the case of three worked examples. The first benchmark is the threshold stochastic gravitational wave background ΩGWh2 that LISA can observe. The second is the signal-to-noise …
