Understanding Second Grader’S Computational Thinking Skills In Robotics Through Their Individual Traits, Youngkyun Baek, Dazhi Yang, Yibo Fan

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study investigated the relationship between the personal traits and computational thinking skills of second graders within the context of robotics activities. The hypothesized model showed that learning preference, intrinsic motivation, and self-efficacy were the main predictors of coding achievement and computational thinking skills, while no direct relationship was found between learning preference, intrinsic, or extrinsic motivation. The final path analysis revealed that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation predict self-efficacy, self-efficacy predicts coding achievement, and coding achievement predicts computational thinking skills. Another important finding was the strong impact of self-efficacy on coding achievement as well as computational thinking skills. Results are …

The Hydrogen Bond: A Hundred Years And Counting, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Since its original inception, a great deal has been learned about the nature, properties, and applications of the H-bond. This review summarizes some of the unexpected paths that inquiry into this phenomenon has taken researchers. The transfer of the bridging proton from one molecule to another can occur not only in the ground electronic state, but in various excited states as well. Study of the latter process has developed insights into the relationships between the nature of the state, the strength of the H-bond, and the height of the transfer barrier. The enormous broadening of the range of atoms that …

Sensing Optical Cavity Mismatch With A Mode-Converter And Quadrant Photodiode, Fabian Magana-Sandoval, Thomas Vo, Daniel Vander-Hyde, Jaclyn (Jax) Sanders, Stefan W. Ballmer Nov 2019

Sensing Optical Cavity Mismatch With A Mode-Converter And Quadrant Photodiode, Fabian Magana-Sandoval, Thomas Vo, Daniel Vander-Hyde, Jaclyn (Jax) Sanders, Stefan W. Ballmer

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

We present a new technique for sensing optical cavity mode mismatch and alignment by using a cylindrical lens mode converting telescope, radio-frequency quadrant photodiodes, and a heterodyne detection scheme. The telescope allows the conversion of the Laguerre-Gauss bullseye mode (LG01) into the 45° rotated Hermite-Gauss (“pringle”) mode (HG11), which can be easily measured with quadrant photodiodes. We show that we can convert to the HG basis optically, measure mode mismatched and alignment signals using widely produced radio-frequency quadrant photodiodes, and obtain a feedback error signal with heterodyne detection.

Graded Quivers, Generalized Dimer Models And Toric Geometry, Sebastián Franco, Azeem Hasan Nov 2019

Graded Quivers, Generalized Dimer Models And Toric Geometry, Sebastián Franco, Azeem Hasan

Publications and Research

The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY (m+2)-folds is described by m-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence extends to general m the well known connection between CY (m+2)-folds and gauge theories on the world-volume of D(5-2m)-branes for m = 0, ..., 3. We introduce m-dimers, which fully encode the m-graded quivers and their superpotentials, in the case in which the CY (m+2)-folds are toric. Generalizing the well known m = 1,2 cases, m-dimers significantly simplify the connection between geometry and m-graded quivers. A key …

High-Dimensional Clustering Method Based On Variant Bat Algorithm, Kou Guang, Guangming Tang, Jiajing He, Hengwei Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: With the advent of the era of big data, the information resource is growing rapidly, and the data are becoming high-dimensional. Traditional clustering methods have a good effect for low-dimensional data, but no longer apply to high-dimensional data. On the basis of existing high-dimensional clustering algorithm, a high-dimensional clustering algorithm based on intelligent optimization SSC-BA is proposed. A novel objective function is designed, which integrates the fuzzy weighting within-cluster compactness and the between-cluster separation. A variant bat algorithm is introduced to calculate the weight matrix, giving the new learning rules. Simulation experiments are made for the proposed algorithm, and …

Water‐Borne And Plasma Corticosterone Are Not Correlated In Spotted Salamanders, Alice R. Millikin, Sarah K. Woodley, Drew R. Davis, Ignacio T. Moore, James T. Anderson

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Water‐borne hormone measurement is a noninvasive method suitable for amphibians of all sizes that are otherwise difficult to sample. For this method, containment‐water is assayed for hormones released by the animal. Originally developed in fish, the method has expanded to amphibians, but requires additional species‐specific validations. We wanted to determine physiological relevance of water‐borne corticosterone in spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) by comparing concentrations to those taken using established corticosterone sampling methods, such as plasma. Using a mixture of field and laboratory studies, we compared water‐borne corticosterone levels to other traditional methods of sampling corticosterone for spotted salamander larvae, metamorphs, and …

Dynamical Modeling In Cell Biology With Ordinary Differential Equations, Renee Marie Dale Nov 2019

Dynamical Modeling In Cell Biology With Ordinary Differential Equations, Renee Marie Dale

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dynamical systems have been of interest to biologists and mathematicians alike. Many processes in biology lend themselves to dynamical study. Movement, change, and response to stimuli are dynamical characteristics that define what is 'alive'. A scientific relationship between these two fields is therefore natural. In this thesis, I describe how my PhD research variously related to biological, mathematical, and computational problems in cell biology. In chapter 1 I introduce some of the current problems in the field. In chapter 2, my mathematical model of firefly luciferase in vivo shows the importance of dynamical models to understand systems. Data originally collected …

Pre-Commitment To Moral Values, Nicholas R. Herzog, Justin F. Landy, Emma E. Levine Nov 2019

Pre-Commitment To Moral Values, Nicholas R. Herzog, Justin F. Landy, Emma E. Levine

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

When faced with reoccurring tradeoffs between moral values, people can address them by considering the specifics of each case or by setting policies that predetermine how they will address similar cases. Previous research on moral judgment has often focused on isolated tradeoffs, and therefore, it is unclear which decision strategies are preferred in contexts with reoccurring tradeoffs. Across our studies, participants judged people who precommitted to always prioritizing one value more positively than people who adjusted their priorities based on the specifics of each case. Our findings have important implications for understanding public perceptions of complex policies.

The Social Consequences Of Absolute Moral Proclamations, Elizabeth Huppert, Nicholas R. Herzog, Justin F. Landy, Emma E. Levine Nov 2019

The Social Consequences Of Absolute Moral Proclamations, Elizabeth Huppert, Nicholas R. Herzog, Justin F. Landy, Emma E. Levine

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

Across six studies (N = 3348), we find that people prefer targets who make absolute proclamations (i.e. "It is never okay for people to lie" ) over targets who make ambiguous proclamations ("It is sometimes okay for people to lie" ), even when both targets tell equivalent lies. Preferences for absolutism stem from the belief that moral proclamations send a true signal about moral character--they are not cheap talk. Therefore, absolute proclamations signal moral character, despite also signaling hypocrisy. This research sheds light on the consequences of absolute proclamations and identifies circumstances in which hypocrisy is preferred over consistency.

Sample Transfer Optimization With Adaptive Deep Neural Network, Hemanta Sapkota, Md Arifuzzaman, Engin Arslan Nov 2019

Sample Transfer Optimization With Adaptive Deep Neural Network, Hemanta Sapkota, Md Arifuzzaman, Engin Arslan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Application-layer transfer configurations play a crucial role in achieving desirable performance in high-speed networks. However, finding the optimal configuration for a given transfer task is a difficult problem as it depends on various factors including dataset characteristics, network settings, and background traffic. The state-of-the-art transfer tuning solutions rely on real-time sample transfers to evaluate various configurations and estimate the optimal one. However, existing approaches to run sample transfers incur high delay and measurement errors, thus significantly limit the efficiency of the transfer tuning algorithms. In this paper, we introduce adaptive feed forward deep neural network (DNN) to minimize the error …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The increasing consumption of multimedia services and the demand of high-quality services from customers has triggered a fundamental change in how we administer networks in terms of abstraction, separation, and mapping of forwarding, control and management aspects of services. The industry and the academia are embracing 5G as the future network capable to support next generation vertical applications with different service requirements. To realize this vision in 5G network, the physical network has to be sliced into multiple isolated logical networks of varying sizes and structures which are dedicated to different types of services based on their requirements with different …

An Extension Of The Skew-Normal Distribution, Haroon M. Barakat, Abdallah W. Aboutahoun, Aeema N. El-Kadar

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The stable symmetric family of distribution functions (DF’s) suggested by [1] is a family that contains the reverse of every DF belonging to it. It is revealed that the stable families are capable of describing many types of statistical data. We introduce a new stable family via a mixture of the skew-normal distribution and its reverse, after inserting a scale parameter and its reciprocal to the skew-normal distribution and its reverse, respectively. We show that this family contains all the possible types of DFs. Besides, it has a very remarkable wide range of the indices of skewness and kurtosis. Computational …

Approximate Bayes Estimators Of The Inverted Kumarswamy Distribution Parameters Based On Progressive Type-Ii Censoring Scheme, A. Rashad, M. Yusuf, Sara Moheb

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The purpose of this study is to estimate unknown parameters, reliability, the hazard rate, and the reversed hazard rate function of the inverted Kumaraswamy distribution based on progressively type-II censoring samples. Maximum likelihood estimators are obtained. The Bayesian estimation is studied under quadratic (squared error) and general entropy loss functions using Lindley’s approximation.Non-informative prior distributions are used for the parameters. Based on a Monte Carlo simulation study, the statistical performances of Bayes estimators based on quadratic and general entropy loss functions are compared between various estimates.

Inference For A Constant-Stress Accelerated Life Testing For Power Generalized Weibull Distribution Under Progressive Type-Ii Censoring, M. M. Mohie El-Din, A. M. Abd El-Raheem, S. O. Abd El-Azeem

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper, constant-stress Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) is studied when the lifetime of test units follows Power Generalized Weibull (PGW) distribution. The Maximum Likelihood Estimates (MLEs) and Bayes Estimates (BEs) of the model parameters are obtained under type-II progressive censoring. Moreover, the approximate and credible Confidence Intervals (CIs) of the parameters are derived. The optimal stress level is discussed under D-optimality criterion. Furthermore, a real dataset is analyzed to show the suggested methods. Moreover, this real dataset is used to show the role of PGW distribution as an alternative to the other well-known distributions. Finally, simulation studies are conducted …

Interactive Approach For Solving Three-Level Linear Programming Problem With Neutrosophic Parameters In The Objective Functions, O. E. Emam, Manal A. Abdel-Fattah, S. M. Azzam Nov 2019

Interactive Approach For Solving Three-Level Linear Programming Problem With Neutrosophic Parameters In The Objective Functions, O. E. Emam, Manal A. Abdel-Fattah, S. M. Azzam

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The most widely actions and decisions of the real-world tasks are frequently appeared as hierarchical systems. To deal with these systems, the multi-level programming problem presents the most flourished technique. However, practical situations involve some impreciseness regarding some decisions and performances. Neutrosophic sets provides a vital role by considering three independent degrees specifically truth membership degree, indeterminacy-membership degree, and falsity membership degree of any aspect of uncertain decision. By preserving the advantages of it, the presented study focuses on solving neutrosophic three-level linear programming problems, taking into account the problem coefficients as trapezoidal neutrosophic numbers. The neutrosophic form of the …

Bayesian Estimation For Linear Exponential Distribution Under Progressive Type -Ii Censoring In Constant-Stress Partially-Accelerated Life Tests, Mohamad A. Fawzy, Ibtesam A. Alasbahi Nov 2019

Bayesian Estimation For Linear Exponential Distribution Under Progressive Type -Ii Censoring In Constant-Stress Partially-Accelerated Life Tests, Mohamad A. Fawzy, Ibtesam A. Alasbahi

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper, the estimations of linear exponential distribution parameters and the acceleration factor in constant-stress partially-accelerated life tests based on progressive type -II censoring are considered. Maximum likelihood estimations for the considered parameters are obtained. Observed Fisher information matrix is used to construct asymptotic confidence interval to estimate the model parameters through normal approximation. By using Lindley’s approximation and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, approximate Bayes estimates under loss functions are obtained. Finally, the accuracy of the maximum likelihood estimations and Bayesian estimations for the parameters is investigated through simulation studies.

Traffic Density On Corridors Subject To Incidents: Models For Long-Term Congestion Management, Pedro Cesar Lopes Gerum, Andrew Reed Benton, Melike Baykal-Gürsoy Nov 2019

Traffic Density On Corridors Subject To Incidents: Models For Long-Term Congestion Management, Pedro Cesar Lopes Gerum, Andrew Reed Benton, Melike Baykal-Gürsoy

Supply Chain Management

The purpose of this research is to provide a faster and more efficient method to determine traffic density behavior for long-term congestion management using minimal statistical information. Applications include road work, road improvements, and route choice. To this end, this paper adapts and generalizes two analytical models (for non-peak and peak hours) for the probability mass function of traffic density for a major highway. It then validates the model against real data. The studied corridor has a total of 36 sensors, 18 in each direction, and the traffic experiences randomly occurring service deterioration due to accidents and inclement weather such …
