The Effect Of Washing On Stabilized And Unstabilized Low-Density Polyethylene Films Naturally Weathered In A Sub-Saharan Region (Ghardaia, Algeria, Souad Behissa, Salem Fouad Chabira, Nourelhouda Benmiloud, Mohamed Sebaa
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The effect of washing stabilized and unstabilized blown extruded films of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) used for greenhouse coverings naturally weathered in a sub-Saharan facility at Ghardaia (Algeria) for 19 and 6 months, respectively, was studied. A comparison between unwashed and daily washed samples was done. The changes in the films' properties were followed at regular intervals using various characterization methods (physicochemical and mechanical). Although in both cases the chemical species formed due to the weathering were qualitatively the same, they essentially differed in their concentrations, namely they were higher for the washed samples than for the unwashed ones. Inversely, the …

A series of novel BODIPY-bearing electron-withdrawing groups at the meso position are reported here. According to the optical measurements, it may be clearly seen that the introduction of electron-donating groups into 3,5-positions and the presence of electron-withdrawing groups at the meso position of the BODIPY core resulted in spectacular bathochromic shifts (up to ∼ 304 nm), and the projected photosensitizers had absorption bands in the therapeutic window of the electromagnetic spectrum (600-900 nm). The absorption maxima of compounds 4,5,6, and 7 were at 886 nm, 890 nm, 760 nm, and 761 nm, respectively. The singlet oxygen generation experiments revealed that …

Effect Of Crosslinking Patterns On The Properties Of Conjugated Microporous Polymers, Hakan Bi̇ldi̇ri̇r
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Syntheses and detailed spectroscopic characterizations of two similar conjugated microporous polymers formed by A4 $+$ B2 and A2 $+$ B3 type functional monomers via Sonogashira--Hagihara polycondensation are presented in this report. The two porous polymeric networks possess mono-, di-, and tri- (1-, 1,4-, and 1,3,5-, respectively) substituted benzene rings and fused thiophenic moieties (dithienothiophenes). Because of the different conjugation patterns, their solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and ultraviolet/visible light absorption analyses indicated significant differences. Besides the discussions on the porous properties of the obtained polymeric networks, the presented spectroscopic investigations can be useful for identifying the structure-property relationship of …

Chiral 1,4-Aminoalkylphenols For Enantioselective Diethylzinc Addition To Aldehydes, Ömer Di̇lek, Mustafa Ali̇ Tezeren, Tahi̇r Ti̇lki̇, Erkan Ertürk
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Starting from a chiral secondary alcohol, novel enantiopure 1,4-aminoalkylphenols (AAPs) were prepared by exploiting conventional organic transformations such as the Mitsunobu reaction, Eschweiler--Clarke N-methylation, and demethylation of anisoles. The catalytic activity of the 1,4-AAPs was investigated in enantioselective Et$_{2}$Zn addition to benzaldehyde. They were found to accelerate the Et$_{2}$Zn addition to benzaldehyde. High yields and enantioselectivities (e.g., 95% yield and 82% ee) were achieved.

A Case Study Of Antiaromaticity: Carbomethoxy Cyclopropenyl Anion, Zi̇kri̇ Altun, Erdi̇ Ata Bleda, Carl Trindle
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The simplest ideas of antiaromaticity refer to regular monocyclic systems and the eigenfunctions of the H\"{u}ckel Hamiltonian for 4n $\pi $ electrons in such systems. The antiaromaticity is expressed in the energy penalty for such idealized systems relative to the H\"{u}ckel energy for 2n noninteracting $\pi $ pairs. Observed systems seldom achieve the regular planar geometry assumed in this picture, owing to their ability to ease the antiaromaticity penalty by departures from the regular geometry and also by export of the 4n $\pi $ electrons' charge to substituents. In this report we estimate numerical values for the stabilization derived from …

Investigation Of Sulfuric Acid-Treated Activated Carbon Properties, Neda Asasian Kolur, Seyedmehdi Sharifian, Tahereh Kaghazchi
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A granulated type of commercial activated carbon (GAC) with surface area of 828 m$^{2}$/g was treated with a strong solution of sulfuric acid (98% wt.) at a temperature of 30 $^{\circ}$C . The physicochemical and porous properties and the surface chemistry of the sorbents were investigated and compared in detail. It was established that the lower temperatures of impregnation and the higher concentration of H$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ solution resulted in the introduction of higher percentages of sulfur-containing groups and smaller porosity loss. The results of EDS, FTIR, and XPS tests confirmed the introduction of sulfone groups and acidic oxygenated ones, which increased …

Effect Of Fe Substitution On The Partial Oxidation Of Methane To Syngas Over La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$Co$_{1-Y}$Fe$_{Y}$O$_{3-\Delta}$ Perovskites, Adilah Aliyatulmuna, Perry Burhan, Bambang Prijamboedi, Hamzah Fansuri, Irmina Kris Murwani
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this research, a series of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$Co$_{1-y}$Fe$_{y}$O$_{3-\delta }$ ($y =$ 0.0--0.4) was successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction method and syngas production studies were performed using gas chromatography. Thermogravimetric analysis characterized the concentration of Fe$^{3+}$, which gave a low H$_{2}$/CO ratio over La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$Co$_{1-y}$Fe$_{y}$O$_{3-\delta }$ without the presence of molecular oxygen. All samples possessed a purely rhombohedral structure. The incorporation of more Fe increased the lattice parameter and changed XRD peaks of the La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$Co$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ from sharp and single to double. Among the catalyst powders tested for syngas production activity, La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$Co$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$O$_{3-\delta }$ ($y =$ 0.4) had the low molar ratio of H$_{2}$/CO …

Improvement Of The Mechanical And Thermal Properties Of Polyester Nonwoven Fabrics By Ptfe Coating, Fatemeh Ashrafi, Mohammad Reza Babaei Lavasani
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Polyester (polyethylene terephthalate) is one of the most widely used polymers in textiles. Despite all the advantages of this polymer, its low thermal resistance limits its use in filters and protective textiles. On the other hand, polyester nonwovens are used in many products as wipes, filters, and padding. The surface properties of polyester nonwovens are often not perfect for a specific application and need to be modified. Different ways, including coating, have been developed to modify their surface properties. Therefore, in the present study attempts were made to investigate the improvement of the thermal resistance of a polyester nonwoven by …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Protic ionic liquids (PILs) were synthesized through a stoichiometric neutralization reaction between 2,2$' $-(ethylenedioxy)-bis(ethylamine) { Edbea} and various acids (formic, acetic, boric, decanoic, and gentisic acid). The PILs were characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR, $^{1}$H and $^{13}$C NMR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. All the PILs except PIL3 were liquid at room temperature. The viscosity of the PILs (PIL1, 2, 4, 5) was measured using a cone-and-plate viscometer at ambient temperature. Quantum chemical calculations were used to explain the cation/anion ratio in the PILs. Reaction energies in the gas phase calculated at M062X/6-311$+$G(d,p) level were used to determine the cation/anion ratio. …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Curcuminoids, reported to have important biological properties, such as antioxidant, anti-Alzheimer, and antidiabetic properties, comprise curcumin (CRM; 1,7-bis [4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) and its derivatives demethoxycurcumin (DMC; (E,6E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxy-cyclohexyl)-7-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC; 1,7-bis[4-hydroxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione). Their electrochemical oxidations are thoroughly explored by applying cyclic and differential pulse voltammetric techniques. The dependence of current intensities and potentials on pH, concentration, scan rate, and nature of the buffer was investigated. The outcome is supported by density functional theory computations indicating the transfer of 4-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$, 6-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$, and 8-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$ couples involved in the oxidation mechanisms of CRM, DMC, and BDMC, respectively, leading to the formation of the same oxidized product.

Methyl-Substituted 2-Aminothiazole--Based Cobalt(Ii) And Silver(I) Complexes: Synthesis, X-Ray Structures, And Biological Activities, Ezzat Khan, Tufail Ahmad, Zarif Gul, Farhat Ullah, Muhammad Nawaz Tahir, Awal Noor
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
2-Aminothiazole derivatives bear three nucleophilic centers, i.e. endocyclic N, exocyclic NH$_{2}$, and S atom in the ring system. In addition to these centers there are $\pi$-electrons in the ring system which can also expectedly be involved in some sort of coordination. To the best of our knowledge the solid state coordination chemistry of such ligands has not been fully presented in the literature. These ligands (2-amino-4-methylthiazole and 2-amino-5-methylthiazole) were coupled with CoCl$_{2}$ under aerobic conditions to form tetrahedral complexes, bis(2-amino-4-methylthiazole)dichlorocobalt(II) (1) and bis(2-amino-5-methylthiazole)dichlorocobalt(II) (2). Reaction of 2-amino-5-methylthiazole with AgNO$_{3}$ led to an expected two-coordinated, bis(2-amino-5-methylthiazole)silver(I) nitrate (3) as crystalline material. …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In the present work, the compositions of the 27 triacylglycerols (TAGs) as well as fatty acid composition of Chilopsis linearis seed oil were determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with diode array and mass spectrometric detections. It was shown that the main conjugated acid in the seed oil is a catalpic acid, (9E,11E,13Z)-octadeca-9,11,13-trienoic acid, while two unusual fatty acids have the parameters satisfying the literature data for (10E,12E)-octadeca-10,12-dienoic and (9E,12E)-octadeca-9,12-dienoic acids. For the two conjugated acid substituents the isosbestic point (at 234 nm) was found and was used to calculate the ratios of TAGs with different chromophores in the …

Phthalocyanines (Pcs) are established sensitive materials for chemical gas sensors due to their superb sensing characteristics and the achievable manifold in their analyte interaction properties. Their sorption properties are determined by the metal ion center and substituents attached to the periphery of the ring system. Similarly, vic-dioximes can be modified in their sorption properties and employed as sensitive materials. In this work, a nickel Pc and various vic-dioximes functionalized with the same hexafluoroisopropanol moiety are assessed and compared in their gas-sensing properties using the quartz crystal microbalance for the first time. This specific substituent is selected for its hydrogen bond …

Synthesis Of Tetrakis Bromine Terminated Phthalocyanine And Its Methyl Methacrylate Polymers Via Atr, Tuba Çakir Çanak, Damla Yeşi̇ldağ, Ilgin Nar, Esi̇n Hamuryudan, İbrahi̇m Ersi̇n Serhatli
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A phthalocyanine (Pc) initiator, tetrakis(2-bromopropyloxyester)ethylthiophthalocyaninatozinc(II) (ZnPc-Br), was prepared and successfully applied to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) for the first time. Bromine end groups of the synthesized Pc took part in the initiation of the MMA chain growth. Polymerization was demonstrated by monomodal molecular weight distribution of the synthesized polymers and their increasing molecular weight behavior with reaction time. UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence, and transmittance properties of the polymers were also examined. The results indicate that the ZnPc-Br-based initiator is potentially applicable in ATRP applied to MMA in order to obtain and develop functional acrylic materials.

This paper provides the calculation of the distribution of the concentrations of complex particles of the Sn(II) - citrate - water system in the solution volume, on the surface of the electrode, and in the diffusion layer for the tin citrate electrolyte containing an excess of the ligand. Based on the calculations for the electrodeposition of tin, an electrolyte containing [SnCit]$^{2-}$ complex at pH 8.0 was chosen. The kinetic parameters of the discharge stage, the diffusion coefficient of the electrochemical active ion, and the current efficiency of tin were determined by the methods of stationary voltammetry and chronovoltamperometry. It is …

Novel "Turn Off-On" Sensors For Detection Of Dna-Acrylamide Interaction Using Zns Quantum Dots As A Phosphorescent Probe, Hayri̇ye Eda Şatana Kara
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A novel "turn off-on" sensor for detection of interaction between DNA and acrylamide (ACR) was developed. In this method, L-cysteine capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were used as room temperature phosphorescent probes. In the ``turn-off'' mode, ACR was absorbed onto the surface of QDs via electrostatic interaction, which caused a quenching effect of room-temperature phosphorescence signal by photoinduced electron-transfer mechanism. ACR was removed from the QDs' surface with the addition of DNA. Thus, the phosphorescence emission of QDs was recovered and the system was turned to the ``turn-on'' mode. The quenching mechanism of QDs by ACR was collisional (dynamic) …

Rapid And On-Site Electrochemical Detection Of Bisphenol A And Arsenic In Drinking Water Using A Novel Electrode Array, Yildiz Uludağ, Zehra Ölçer, Canan Doğan, Turghun Muhammad, Zeynep Altintaş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The paper describes a novel dip-and-gauge hand-held sensor device for the rapid, cost-effective, and on-site detection of bisphenol A and arsenic in drinking water samples. Different working electrode diameters ranging from 1.5 mm to 4 mm were designed and fabricated to construct a new electrochemical biosensor. The sensor was employed for the chronoamperometric detection of bisphenol A and voltammetric determination of arsenic in drinking water samples. Bisphenol A measurements resulted in a detection limit of 10 ng mL$^{-1}$ with a linear range of 0-4000 ng mL$^{-1}$. Baby products and bottles have to be completely free of bisphenol and hence a …

Synthesis Of Novel Azo Linkage-Based Schiff Bases Including Anthranilic Acid And Hexanoic Acid Moieties: Investigation Of Azo-Hydrazone And Phenol-Keto Tautomerism, Solvatochromism, And Ionochromism, Özlem Özdemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Two new azo-Schiff base receptors (L$_{{1}}$ and L$_{{2}})$ containing azo and azomethine groups with a conjugated group (benzyl ring of anthranilic acid, in L$_{{1}})$ and electron-donating group (alkyl chain of hexanoic acid, in L$_{{2}})$ were synthesized and characterized. Azo-hydrazone/phenol-keto tautomerism and solvatochromism were investigated. Studying their sensing ability towards cations (Co$^{2+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, Zn$^{2+}$, Ni$^{2+}$, Pb$^{2+}$, Cd$^{2+}$, Mn$^{2+}$, Fe$^{3+}$, Cr$^{3+}$, and Al$^{3+})$, high sensitivity and selectivity were recorded for Fe$^{3+}$ by naked eye and UV-Vis spectra in DMF-aqueous HEPES buffer (v:v, 1:1, pH 6.8). The color of L$_{{1}}$ and L$_{{2}})$ solutions instantly changed from yellow to deep orange and pale orange. …
