Screening Tools For Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders Among Adults Living With Hiv In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review, Patrick N. Mwangala, Charles R. Newton, Melanie Abas, Amina Abubakar Nov 2019

Screening Tools For Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders Among Adults Living With Hiv In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review, Patrick N. Mwangala, Charles R. Newton, Melanie Abas, Amina Abubakar

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Background: People living with HIV are at risk of developing HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) which adversely affects their quality of life. Routine screening of HAND in HIV care is recommended to identify clinically important changes in cognitive functioning and allow for early interventions. However, HAND detection in routine clinical practice has never been reported in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), partly due to a lack of adequately standardized screening tools. This review was conducted to identify the commonly used screening tools for HAND in SSA and document their psychometric properties and diagnostic accuracy.
Methods: We searched Ovid Medline, PsycINFO and Web of …

Examining The Role Of Resolution To Diagnosis In Intervention Engagement For Early Diagnosed Children With Asd, Cara Cordeaux Nov 2019

Examining The Role Of Resolution To Diagnosis In Intervention Engagement For Early Diagnosed Children With Asd, Cara Cordeaux

Doctoral Dissertations

A large body of research indicates that early intervention leads to better outcomes in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); yet, research on parent factors that influence intervention engagement is sparse, though emphasized in recent literature that examines the impact of receiving a child’s diagnosis on parents’ mental health and well-being. Examination of the relationship between parent adaptation to a child’s diagnosis (resolution to diagnosis) and intervention engagement as well as factors that may influence parent resolution provides important information about parent psychological processes and their impact on real-life behaviors. We examined these factors in parents of children diagnosed at …

Exploring The Nexus Between Bilingual Learning, Emotions, And Creativity: A Case Study Of A Former Korean Bilingual Student’S Creative Artifact (Book), Mihyun Han Nov 2019

Exploring The Nexus Between Bilingual Learning, Emotions, And Creativity: A Case Study Of A Former Korean Bilingual Student’S Creative Artifact (Book), Mihyun Han

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation study explores how a student creative artifact, (a book, developed by a Korean bilingual student, named Jinwoo) in an U.S. elementary school made a lasting contribution within and beyond the school community. Jinwoo’s book offers creative insights into Korean emergent bilingual students’ learning experiences in the U.S English-only classrooms. This study explores and documents how a student generated artifact can be used to illustrate and scaffold intense emotional learning experiences, serve as a vehicle for creative expressions, and provide a lens for understanding of Korean emergent bilingual students’ learning experiences in English-only U.S. school contexts. A theoretical process …

Deepfake Detection And Low-Resource Language Speech Recognition Using Deep Learning, Bao Thai Nov 2019

Deepfake Detection And Low-Resource Language Speech Recognition Using Deep Learning, Bao Thai

Theses

While deep learning algorithms have made significant progress in automatic speech recognition and natural language processing, they require a significant amount of labelled training data to perform effectively. As such, these applications have not been extended to languages that have only limited amount of data available, such as extinct or endangered languages. Another problem caused by the rise of deep learning is that individuals with malicious intents have been able to leverage these algorithms to create fake contents that can pose serious harm to security and public safety. In this work, we explore the solutions to both of these problems. …

The Proceedings Of The International Civil Aviation English Association (2019) Conference, Jennifer Roberts, Jenny Drayton, Michael Kelly, Dominique Estival, Alicia E. Guana, Claudia Betina Helguera Alverez, Ana Lúcia Tavares Monteiro, Aline Pacheco

International Civil Aviation English Association

Hosted by All Nippon Airways (ANA) in Chiba, Tokyo, Japan, the 2019 International Civil Aviation English Association (ICAEA) annual conference focused on exploring the aviation English training needs of ab-initio pilots and air traffic controllers, as well as aircraft maintenance personnel.

Globally, much of the demand for new pilots and air traffic controllers is located in areas of world for which English is not a first or national language. Exploring this resulting need to train non-native English speaking personnel was a primary focus of the 2019 ICAEA conference, including consideration of the language proficiency required for success in initial training, …

(Global) Hip Hop Studies Bibliography, Travis T. Harris, Travis Terrell Harris Nov 2019

(Global) Hip Hop Studies Bibliography, Travis T. Harris, Travis Terrell Harris

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

This bibliography documents Hip Hop scholarship outside of America, including scholarly works that may be US centric, yet expands its analysis to other parts of the world. Hip Hop Studies outside the boundaries of the United States stretches as far and wide as Hip Hop itself. This scholarship started in 1984, and the amount of scholarship beyond American boundaries has continued to grow up through present day. The first wave, before Mitchell's Global Noise (2001), includes a wider range of scholarly works such as conference presentations and books written by journalists, in addition to traditional academic sources such as books …

Can It Be Bigger Than Hip Hop?: From Global Hip Hop Studies To Hip Hop, Travis T. Harris

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

Global Hip Hop Studies has grown tremendously since it started in 1984. Scholars from a number of disciplines have published numerous journal articles, books, dissertations and theses. They have also presented at multiple academic conferences and taught classes on global Hip Hop. “Can It Be Bigger Than Hip Hop?: From Global Hip Hop Studies to Hip Hop Studies” traces this history and examines the key authors, intellectual interventions, methods, and theories of this field. I used an interdisciplinary methodology entailing participant observations of local Hip Hoppas and the examination of more than five hundred scholarly texts that I assembled into …

Reclaiming Our Subjugated Truths—Using Hip Hop As A Form Of Decolonizing Public Pedagogy: The Case Of Didier Awadi, Joanna D. Da Sylva Nov 2019

Reclaiming Our Subjugated Truths—Using Hip Hop As A Form Of Decolonizing Public Pedagogy: The Case Of Didier Awadi, Joanna D. Da Sylva

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

This paper explores how Senegalese Hip Hop pioneer, Didier Awadi, uses Hip Hop as a form of decolonizing public pedagogy that renders the contributions of Pan-African leaders visible to Africa and the world, contributions that are often omitted and vilified by mainstream history. I argue that Awadi’s work provides a strategy for reclaiming oral literature, particularly storytelling, as a legitimate way of knowing, teaching and learning history. In his album Présidents d’Afrique, Didier Awadi uses rap and traditional African music to retell the story of our resistant past through an African frame of reference. The data is comprised of …

Configurations Of Space And Identity In Hip Hop: Performing “Global South”, Igor Johannsen Nov 2019

Configurations Of Space And Identity In Hip Hop: Performing “Global South”, Igor Johannsen

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

The spatiality of culture, specifically Hip Hop, and the reverberations between space and identity are the core concern of this essay. In deconstructing and contextualizing the concept of the Global South by discussing the practices of respective Hip Hop communities, this paper aims at laying bare the oversimplifications inherent in those seemingly natural spatial dimensions. The Global South can, thus, not be understood as a concise and objective term. Instead, it implies a highly normative concept and can be made to reveal or conceal specific attributes of the culture in question. Deliberately creating a cultural and artistic discourse in which …

Two Forms Of Formalism, Dan Priel Nov 2019

Two Forms Of Formalism, Dan Priel

All Papers

In this paper I argue that what is called ‘formalism’ is actually two very different views: I call one ‘conceptualism’ and the other ‘doctrinalism’. The former is deductive and ‘philosophical’ whereas the latter is inductive and ‘pragmatic’. While the two views have sometimes been aligned in opposition to certain views they were both in opposition to, they are actually fundamentally at odds with each other. I demonstrate this by identifying eight parameters on which the two are opposed. After presenting the two views, I turn to evaluating the two views. I first argue that conceptualism is indefensible, and that though …

Disciplinary D/Discourses: Navigating And Negotiating Disciplinary Paradigms, Michael R. P. Bailey Nov 2019

Disciplinary D/Discourses: Navigating And Negotiating Disciplinary Paradigms, Michael R. P. Bailey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the past twenty-five years, in the United States, zero-tolerance policies that were initially implemented to deter gun violence and drugs in schools have expanded to include a wide range of discretionary offenses such as disrespect and defiance. As a result, many students have been denied access to educational opportunities, been excluded from their peers, and had their lives irrevocably changed due to systemic sanctioning of exclusionary practices. Educators, who are caught between competing societal demands, job expectations, and ethical beliefs about their profession are tasked with balancing the instructional and interactional components of their work in an attempt to …

Constructed Action In American Sign Language: A Look At Second Language Learners In A Second Modality, Kim B. Kurz, Kellie Mullaney, Corrine Occhino Nov 2019

Constructed Action In American Sign Language: A Look At Second Language Learners In A Second Modality, Kim B. Kurz, Kellie Mullaney, Corrine Occhino

Articles

Constructed action is a cover term used in signed language linguistics to describe multi-functional constructions which encode perspective-taking and viewpoint. Within constructed action, viewpoint constructions serve to create discourse coherence by allowing signers to share perspectives and psychological states. Character, observer, and blended viewpoint constructions have been well documented in signed language literature in Deaf signers. However, little is known about hearing second language learners’ use of constructed action or about the acquisition and use of viewpoint constructions. We investigate the acquisition of viewpoint constructions in 11 college students acquiring American Sign Language (ASL) as a second language in a …

Regulating Bodies: Children And Sexual Violence, Heather R. Hlavka Nov 2019

Regulating Bodies: Children And Sexual Violence, Heather R. Hlavka

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The interdisciplinary silences on sexual violence and the omission of children and youth from social science research speak volumes of the power of the child as a flexible, cultural signifier. In this article, I argue that dominant frameworks of children and childhood make child sexual assault a discursive impossibility for most young people. The epistemic violence of silencing matters, and it is these erasures that are fundamental to understanding violence and power. I argue it is paramount for feminist researchers to call attention to the undermining qualities of Institutional Review Boards that act as gatekeepers of representation and voice.

Seeing Like A Citizen : Decolonization, Development, And The Making Of Kenya, 1945–1980, Kara Moskowitz Nov 2019

Seeing Like A Citizen : Decolonization, Development, And The Making Of Kenya, 1945–1980, Kara Moskowitz

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In Seeing Like a Citizen, Kara Moskowitz approaches Kenya’s late colonial and early postcolonial eras as a single period of political, economic, and social transition. In focusing on rural Kenyans—the vast majority of the populace and the main targets of development interventions—as they actively sought access to aid, she offers new insights into the texture of political life in decolonizing Kenya and the early postcolonial world.

Using multisited archival sources and oral histories focused on the western Rift Valley, Seeing Like a Citizen makes three fundamental contributions to our understanding of African and Kenyan history. First, it challenges the widely …

Africa Every Day : Fun, Leisure, And Expressive Culture On The Continent, Oluwakemi M. Balogun, Lisa Gilman, Melissa Graboyes, Habib Iddrisu

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Africa Every Day presents an exuberant, thoughtful, and necessary counterpoint to the prevailing emphasis in introductory African studies classes on war, poverty, corruption, disease, and human rights violations on the continent. These challenges are real and deserve sustained attention, but this volume shows that adverse conditions do not prevent people from making music, falling in love, playing sports, participating in festivals, writing blogs, telling jokes, making videos, playing games, eating delicious food, and finding pleasure in their daily lives.
Across seven sections—Celebrations and Rites of Passage; Socializing and Friendship; Love, Sex, and Marriage; Sports and Recreation; Performance, Language, and Creativity; …

Reducing Underrepresentation: Promising Practices In Florida, Catherine A. Mullins Nov 2019

Reducing Underrepresentation: Promising Practices In Florida, Catherine A. Mullins

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I examined representation rates of gifted students from diverse backgrounds in Florida county school districts. Florida state legislation governing gifted student education allows for alternative identification methods to be used for students from underrepresented groups if plans for such identification are approved by the Florida Department of Education; however, this option, informally referred to as “Plan B” after subsection B of the legislation governing gifted services, is not a requirement that districts must follow. Consequently, there are large differences in the ways districts identify underrepresented students for gifted services. State legislation identifies underrepresented populations as students with …

Automatic Correction Of Disfluent Spoken Queries, Manaal Faruqui, Siddharth Gopal

Defensive Publications Series

A user’s interaction with a virtual assistant typically involves spoken requests, queries, and commands which often includes disfluencies. This disclosure describes techniques to automatically correct disfluent queries. Per techniques of this disclosure, a disfluency correction machine learning model is utilized to convert a disfluent query to a corresponding fluent query. Lexical features extracted from the disfluent query are utilized to determine a portion of the query that is removed from the disfluent query to convert it to a fluent query. The model is trained using pairs of queries.

The Relationship Between Length Of Community Tenure And Residents’ Volunteering At Community Events: Results From The Metro Atlanta Speaks Survey, Ramesh Ghimire, Jim Skinner Nov 2019

The Relationship Between Length Of Community Tenure And Residents’ Volunteering At Community Events: Results From The Metro Atlanta Speaks Survey, Ramesh Ghimire, Jim Skinner

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Volunteering at community events could be associated with length of community tenure as residents with longer years of “tenure” might have a greater sense of community belonging, greater social capital (e.g. social networks and trust), and greater familiarity with regional cultures, compared to new residents. Using the Metro Atlanta Speaks survey conducted in 2015 and 2016, this study finds that residents’ volunteering at community events is significantly and positively associated with their length of community tenure in metro Atlanta counties. Other sociodemographic characteristics, such as age, gender, education, income, and children in the household also significantly influence residents’ volunteering at …

Chinese, Nyonya Or Local?: Perceived Food Culture In Penang, Malaysia, Seong Lin Ding Nov 2019

Chinese, Nyonya Or Local?: Perceived Food Culture In Penang, Malaysia, Seong Lin Ding

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Penang is an excitingly diverse city. Despite prominent gentrification projects and the sign of boutique hotels, posh shops and trendy restaurants/bars/café that adorn its streets, Georgetown remains authentic, unique and lively. The present study intends to explore Georgetown, the capital city of Penang, not only for its historically and culturally rich and intact cityscape, but also for its fabulous food culture, especially street food and the nyonya cuisine. By employing a linguistic landscape approach (Landry and Bournis 1997; Shohamy, Ben-Rafael and Barni 2010), I would like to highlight how the perceived food culture (for example, people’s understanding about food – …

Using The Linguistic Experiences Of Youth And Their Families As Curriculum: The Language Box Project, Molly A. Perara-Lunde Ms.

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This qualitative curricular case study investigated the implementation of a project called the Language Box in a seventh grade Humanities classroom in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I worked with the classroom teacher to design the Language Box project, which focused on the language use practices of the students and their families. We designed the project with the goal of addressing issues of home language loss, bilingualism, and English language acquisition. The students in the classroom were almost exclusively Hispanic, many came from low income families and some were undocumented. Each student acted as a researcher, investigating the language use practices in …

“Man Plans But Ultimately, God Decides”: A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Contextual Family Planning Beliefs Of Recently Resettled Congolese Refugee Women In West Central Florida., Linda Bomboka Wilson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Existent demographic changes in the United States are largely a result of the current international refugee crisis. Within the past three years, there has been an influx of refugees who were affected by the wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Congolese refugees were the highest number of all refugee groups to arrive in the United States in Fiscal Years 2016-2018, yet little is known about their lived experiences, particularly as they apply to reproductive health and family planning in general. Congolese refugee women who resettle in the United States are unique because many lived in refugee camps for …
