Association Between Engagement In A Community-Based Home Visitation Program And Birth Spacing Between First And Second Children, Hing Ting Connie Li Jan 2019

Association Between Engagement In A Community-Based Home Visitation Program And Birth Spacing Between First And Second Children, Hing Ting Connie Li

Public Health Theses

OBJECTIVE: To identify patterns in engagement in the Connecticut-based home visitation program, Nurturing Families Network (NFN), and to determine whether associations exist between various engagement patterns and birth-to-pregnancy intervals between first and second children.

METHODS: Repeated measures latent class analysis was employed to identify patterns in program engagement among 5,248 families enrolled in NFN with available home visit information. Maternal socio-demographic characteristics were examined to identify potential predictors of engagement patterns. Propensity score matching was used to identify firstborn children of families in Connecticut with comparable eligibility and tendency to enroll in NFN. Survival analysis was conducted to assess the …

Freedom In Existence: A Comparative Study Of The Poetics Of Emily Dickinson And Sohrab Sepehri, Neda Zahraie Jan 2019

Freedom In Existence: A Comparative Study Of The Poetics Of Emily Dickinson And Sohrab Sepehri, Neda Zahraie

Dissertations and Theses

Poetry, like thought, belongs to all people and is representative of existence itself. In one sense, poetry is the musical formation of words, whose effects must be experienced in sound, tone and melody, but in another sense, poetry is also an artistic discourse where the “fundamental character is that of an incidentally moving and imaginative form of communication” (Edman 46). Emily Dickinson and Sohrab Sepehri are two poets who sought to identify and define the Self in their modernist poetic discourse, and they each appropriated language as a means and a stepping-stone towards a methodological and unrestricted method of inquiry …

"Beyond Consolation": Or Strangeness, Estrangement, And Strange-Ing In The Elegy For The Black Body, 1955-Present, Naomie Jean-Pierre Jan 2019

"Beyond Consolation": Or Strangeness, Estrangement, And Strange-Ing In The Elegy For The Black Body, 1955-Present, Naomie Jean-Pierre

Dissertations and Theses

The Elegy for the Black Body examines the mid-twentieth to early-twenty-first-century poetic justice crafted by African American poets to eulogize individual African Americans whose deaths were the result of racial and political violence. In the age of lynching, mass shooting, and police brutality, I argue that an African American poetic tradition persists that, while not entirely beholden to the ancient elegy, is its distant relative, along with the English and American Elegy. I argue further that while the contemporary American elegy has undergone for the last six decades intensive study, from the notable studies done by Peter Sack’s in The …

The Embodiment Of Theory In Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts, Julie A. Ficks Jan 2019

The Embodiment Of Theory In Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts, Julie A. Ficks

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research is to explore how Maggie Nelson, in her groundbreaking memoir The Argonauts (2015), works to bring critical theory (primarily queer and feminist theory) out of the academy and into the realm of the personal, rendering theory as tangible and embodied in a real-world setting. Through this unique exchange, Nelson radically reinstates norms relating to gender, sexuality, motherhood and relationships.

Deconstructing Language Ideologies With Self-Reflective Writing In An Efl Classroom In Haiti: A Critical Discourse Analysis Case Study, Javid Buchanan Jan 2019

Deconstructing Language Ideologies With Self-Reflective Writing In An Efl Classroom In Haiti: A Critical Discourse Analysis Case Study, Javid Buchanan

Dissertations and Theses

This paper draws on data collected from a critical self-reflective writing workshop series within an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom in The Republic of Haiti. This Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) case study investigates 7 students’ critical self-reflection writing to uncover language-related ideologies embedded within the meaning-making experiences of multilingual language users at a community-based organization. Although students generally show positive or negative attitudes towards language, the use of critical classroom discourse allows students to move beyond generic positive and negative framing when talking about language. Using Gardner’s L2 learner motivation model, this case study explores “instrumental” and “integrative" …

Revolution, Reform, And Class Conflict In Rebecca Harding Davis’S Life In The Iron-Mills, Thomas Collins Jan 2019

Revolution, Reform, And Class Conflict In Rebecca Harding Davis’S Life In The Iron-Mills, Thomas Collins

Dissertations and Theses

Life in the Iron-Mills (1861) by Rebecca Harding Davis is a very early example of American fiction that depicts the living and working conditions in a mill town. Although the novella advocates for workers, it does not accurately depict contemporaneous working-class culture. Davis depicts workers as isolated and helpless in the face of the forces that oppress them rather than giving voice to the workers’ movement of her time. Although Davis depicts workers in a debased state, the text’s narrator holds out hope of the “Dawn,” suggesting a revolutionary movement. Because the narrator offers no interpretation regarding how the working …

The Uses Of History In International Society: From The Paris Peace Conference To The Present, Margaret Macmillan, Patrick Quinton-Brown Jan 2019

The Uses Of History In International Society: From The Paris Peace Conference To The Present, Margaret Macmillan, Patrick Quinton-Brown

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

History has been used—and abused—for centuries. Yet the more familiar notion of ‘history's lessons’—a notion which tends to make most historians uncomfortable, and which surely demands thoroughgoing skepticism—is far from exhaustive of history's uses in the practice and study of international relations. One important and timely subject is the more constitutive role of history in international deliberations over the creation, fragmentation and transformation of nation-states. What follows is a historical comparison of the changing ways in which the past has been used to frame the terms and content of such debates. While we will be exploring the uses of history …

The Relationship Between L2 Listening Proficiency And L2 Aural Language Processing, Paul Joyce Jan 2019

The Relationship Between L2 Listening Proficiency And L2 Aural Language Processing, Paul Joyce

PASAA

Listening has been widely characterised as a multifaceted process encompassing a range of linguistic and psycholinguistic components (see Rubin, 1994). However, for learners at different levels of L2 proficiency, there is uncertainty over the relative importance of the various sub-skills. To address this issue, a number of linguistic and psycholinguistic sub-skills that are associated with L2 listening proficiency were selected and operationalised. This battery of discrete point measures, as well as two L2 proficiency tests, was administered to 443 Japanese university students. After the data had been subjected to descriptive and inferential analysis, the findings indicated that L2 listening comprehension …

Book Review: Durkheim And The Internet, Andrew Jocuns Jan 2019

Book Review: Durkheim And The Internet, Andrew Jocuns

PASAA

Jan Blommaert's Durkheim and the Internet: On sociolinguistics and the sociological imagination is a timely reflection on relating one of the great thinkers in sociology to the field of sociolinguistics. One of Blommaert's points throughout this work is how sociolinguistics has done a great job at focusing upon the linguistic aspects of the field, but has often not paid attention to, or not made a stronger contribution to, the field of sociology. This book is a strong theoretical account in which Blommaert introduces some of the main concepts of Emille Durkheim and how those can be applied to sociolinguistics. In …

Listening Comprehension Through Culturally Familiar Contexts: A Case Study In Japan, Gordon Carlson Jan 2019

Listening Comprehension Through Culturally Familiar Contexts: A Case Study In Japan, Gordon Carlson

PASAA

Around the world, English language educators are increasingly turning to localized and culturally-oriented learning materials to adapt to the needs of their learners. Along with this trend, a small but growing number of studies support the notion that culturally familiar contexts in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning have positive outcomes for language acquisition. However, scant research has been conducted on non-linguistic variables such as doubt and perceived difficulty in comprehending culturally non-familiar listening components. Therefore, this study investigates the effect that cultural familiarity can have on lowering barriers to listening comprehension for English language learners. To achieve this …
