Militant Struggles And Anti-Imperialism In Resil Mojares’S The Freeman Columns During The Early 1970s, Karlo Mikhail Mongaya

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

In the early 1970s, Resil Mojares wrote a newspaper column in the Cebu-based daily The Freeman on what he dubbed the “years of protests.” Through a close reading of surviving copies of Mojares’s columns, thisarticle explores his interest in the militant struggles and anti-imperialist nationalism of the time up until 23 September 1972, when his last column appeared on the very same day he was arrested upon the imposition of martial law. Mojares’s early journalistic writings had nurtured an interest in popular and local histories and cultures and exuded overtly militant articulations, which military rule and postdictatorship developments emasculated.KEYWORDS: RESIL …

Exploration Of The Behavioral, Electrophysiological, And Psychometric Effects Of Kth Speech-Tracking Training In Noise In Normal Hearing Adults, Michael Kurth Nov 2019

Exploration Of The Behavioral, Electrophysiological, And Psychometric Effects Of Kth Speech-Tracking Training In Noise In Normal Hearing Adults, Michael Kurth

Doctoral Dissertations

Looking at hearing loss through the WHO-ICD model for disability reveals that auditory interventions do not necessarily address all of the components of auditory disability. Auditory training has been proposed as a solution to address activity-level deficits. The purpose of this study was to examine structure- and activity-level changes as the result of auditory training for normal hearing individuals training in the presence of noise. Thirty adults with normal hearing were placed into three experimental groups: A group engaging in active auditory training in noise, a group listening to speech material in noise, and a control group that performed no …

The Rise Of Filipino Postcolonial Knowledge: Philippine Studies, The Institute Of Philippine Culture, And The Ateneo De Manila University Press, Charlie Samuya; Veric

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

A contribution to the yet unwritten histories of Philippine Studies (PS), the Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC), and the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Press, thisarticle examines the rise of Filipino postcolonial institutions of knowledge production in the shadow of the Cold War. It argues that PS, IPC, and ADMU Press constituted a coherent and coordinated network that sought to establish a postcolonial culture of knowledge production after 1946. Moreover, their development signaled the rise of decolonizing thought that coincided with the emergence of Cold War area studies.KEYWORDS: POSTCOLONIAL KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION • INTELLECTUAL HISTORY • COLD WAR • DECOLONIZATION • …

Immediate Repeated Reading Has Positive Effects On Reading Fluency For English Language Learners: An Eye-Tracking Study, Jennifer Hemmert Hansen Nov 2019

Immediate Repeated Reading Has Positive Effects On Reading Fluency For English Language Learners: An Eye-Tracking Study, Jennifer Hemmert Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Fluent reading has been described as the ability to read a passage with accuracy, at a steady rate, with minimal hesitancy, and good comprehension (Grabe, 2009; Kuhn, Schwanenflugel, & Meisinger, 2010). Dysfluent reading can affect motivation for reading in English language learners, thereby limiting access to a wealth of language input from written texts (Taguchi, Gorsuch, & Sasamoto, 2006). Extensive research of repeated reading in L1 settings has been shown to increase reading fluency (Samuels, 1979; National Reading Panel, 2000), while comparatively little research has been done on repeated reading in L2 settings (Grabe, 2009). The objective of this eye-tracking …

Tools To Support Collaboration In Educating Emergent Multilingual Students: Jumpstart And Electronic Performance Log, Margaret Bouchard, W. Jason Stegemoller

i.e.: inquiry in education

Collaboration is a vital component of educating emergent multilingual students, and technology plays an integral role in supporting the process. This article presents two tools to facilitate collaboration among emergent multilingual students: Jumpstart and Electronic Performance Log. The authors developed the digital tools in concert with paraeducators and teachers during a two-year, grant-funded, professional development program. In their roles as participant-observers, the authors were able to work with paraeducators and teachers to create tools that fit within the learning context during a professional development program for high school paraeducators. Concepts from activity theory are used to demonstrate that teaching emergent …

Revealing The Resistant Capital Of Cambodian Youth: Using Photovoice As A Tool For Advocacy And Policy Change, Erin L. Papa Nov 2019

Revealing The Resistant Capital Of Cambodian Youth: Using Photovoice As A Tool For Advocacy And Policy Change, Erin L. Papa

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This paper explores the use of Photovoice as a tool for uncovering or developing resistant capital (Yosso, 2005) with youth for language education policy change. Using data from a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) study on the relationships and tensions among the home, community, and school linguistic and social practices of emergent bilingual Cambodian youth in an urban district in the northeastern U.S., I argue that the development of resistant capital depends on various contextual and demographic factors. The Cambodian youth, who have been educated in a recursive bilingual environment (García, 2009) and are involved in a youth-led community organization …

Collaborative Librarianship

In 2018, the Data and Scholarly Communication Services Unit (DSCS) at the University of Colorado Boulder began implementing two open access (OA) policy workflows with the aim of increasing content in the institutional repository CU Scholar, expanding awareness of the campus OA policy that was passed in 2015, and decreasing the burden on researchers for participation in the policy. DSCS leveraged collaborative relationships with other library departments and campus units in order to mobilize the data, infrastructure, procedures, and documentation to execute these workflows. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) workflow identifies existing open access publications by CU Boulder …

Seeking An Intentional Crossroads: Working Towards An Understanding Of Community Building In Hawai’I Public Libraries, Vanessa Irvin, Nicholas Cho, Sarah Nakashima Nov 2019

Seeking An Intentional Crossroads: Working Towards An Understanding Of Community Building In Hawai’I Public Libraries, Vanessa Irvin, Nicholas Cho, Sarah Nakashima

Collaborative Librarianship

Public libraries in Hawai’i serve one of the most diverse populations in the United States. With 51 branch locations across six islands, Hawaii's public libraries are central hubs for citizens, where community building can take place. This paper seeks to explore ways in which community building takes place at public libraries in Hawai’i. Through on-site visits at public libraries, observations of training sessions of participants of a Hawai’i-based public library professional development program (Hui ‘Ekolu), and informal interviews with local public library patrons, key themes, reflections and analysis convey a common question across all groups: “What is a Native Hawaiian …

Picturing Health; Picturing Life: Visual Illness Narratives Of Women With Type 2 Diabetes, Sarah Gurley-Green Nov 2019

Picturing Health; Picturing Life: Visual Illness Narratives Of Women With Type 2 Diabetes, Sarah Gurley-Green

Educational Studies Dissertations

The prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. reached 23 million people between 2012 and 2017 and consumed one-quarter of the overall healthcare dollars. Remembering the suffering and pain of individuals behind these numbers becomes difficult and incalculable. Black American women are the most affected by type 2 diabetes (T2D), compared to their white counterparts, as well as twice as likely to be diagnosed with T2D and 2.5 times more likely to die from T2D. Therefore, understanding the problem requires the fundamental consideration of how these women cope daily with this complex illness while often struggling with complex lives. This narrative …

Concerns And Considerations In Mental Health Practices With Older Culturally Deaf Adults, David M. Feldman Nov 2019

Concerns And Considerations In Mental Health Practices With Older Culturally Deaf Adults, David M. Feldman

JADARA

The elderly population in America is expected to more than double over the next half century. Consequently, the corresponding growth of the culturally Deaf' elderly population becomes important to examine. Because this population is a subgroup of both the hearing elderly and culturally Deaf populations, the expectation is that mental health professionals working with Deaf elderly clients will have specific concerns and will behave in ways that are specific to this population. Little is known, however, about the issues that challenge mental health professionals working with elderly Deaf clients. At present, mental health professions across all fields are unprepared to …

Perceptions Of Deafness Among African American Caretakers, Valerie Borum Nov 2019

Perceptions Of Deafness Among African American Caretakers, Valerie Borum

JADARA

Although deafness does not eliminate membership in racial, ethnic, linguistic, or cultural groups, American, Anglo-Saxon, middle-class families, whose primary language is Standard English, have been the reference point in defining deafness. Research related to cultural differences in perceptions and responses to deafness has been scant. Children of color are largely at-risk for hearing loss due to disproportionate rates of poverty. The purpose of the present study was to examine the perceptions and responses to deafness among African American hearing families with deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Specifically, this study addressed African American hearing caretakers’ etiological conceptions of deafness, perceptions of deaf …
