Luciferian Proto-Individualism In Two Adaptations Of The Faust Legend, Jasmine Johnson-Bullara Jan 2019

Luciferian Proto-Individualism In Two Adaptations Of The Faust Legend, Jasmine Johnson-Bullara

Theses & ETDs

To lay the groundwork for interpreting Faust and Dr. Faustus as a prototypical Individual and as a protégé of the Devil, I establish definitions of Individualism (both for the Renaissance and for the Enlightenment) to be used alongside biblical characterizations of Lucifer, which guide my textual analysis. For Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragicall history of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, I make use of Jacob Burckhardt’s definition of the Renaissance Individual in his Die Kultur der Renaissance in Italien (The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy) and interpret Dr. Faustus’ self-concernedness as an expression of his Individualism. In the …

On A Necessary And Sufficient Condition For The Hamiltonicity Of Graphs, Justin Paul Tienken-Harder Jan 2019

On A Necessary And Sufficient Condition For The Hamiltonicity Of Graphs, Justin Paul Tienken-Harder

Theses & ETDs

Finding non-trivial necessary and sufficient conditions for the Hamiltonicity of graphs has been a longstanding open problem in Graph Theory. In this paper we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be Hamiltonian. Moreover, we draw on past research of line graphs to highlight a surprising connection between the path and cyclic structure of a graph and the trails of hypergraphs. Finally, we briefly highlight some directions of future research.

Exploring Effects Of Imagination On The Robotic Hand Illusion, Cannzana Stockwil Jan 2019

Exploring Effects Of Imagination On The Robotic Hand Illusion, Cannzana Stockwil

Theses & ETDs

Body ownership illusions provide novel insights into what the brain can process as one’s body. Since the classic Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI), much research has been done on developing similar hand illusions and exploring what factors are needed to induce them. In the Robotic Hand Illusion (RoHI), participants wear a glove on one of their hands, allowing them to control the movements of a robotic hand (when they move a finger, the robotic hand moves its corresponding finger). Then the participant rests their real hand (wearing the glove) under a table while they view the robotic hand on top of …

A Comparative Computational Approach To An Old Philological Question: Examining Ictus-Accent Coincidence In Ancient Greek And Latin Verse., Andy Erickson Jan 2019

A Comparative Computational Approach To An Old Philological Question: Examining Ictus-Accent Coincidence In Ancient Greek And Latin Verse., Andy Erickson

Theses & ETDs

Growing available data and Natural Language Processing advances have provided classicists with a new method of research. Utilizing this new method, this thesis will offer a computational approach to an old philological debate that asks whether Latin poets wrote verse with the intention of creating coincidence between the strong metrical beat (ictus) and accent. I argue that ictus-accent coincidence in Latin poetry was not intentional, but rather a statistical inevitability since both Latin meter and Latin pronunciation position their stress on long syllables. To substantiate this argument, I propose a study in which I created a program that scans Ancient …

Brain Functional Connectivity In Motor, Auditory, And Visual Cortices In Professional Pianists, Zulfiia O. Tursunova Jan 2019

Brain Functional Connectivity In Motor, Auditory, And Visual Cortices In Professional Pianists, Zulfiia O. Tursunova

Theses & ETDs

In the present case study heart rate (HR) and electroencephalography (EEG) data of 6 professional pianists (experts) and 6 non-musicians (non-experts) were recorded in order to explore the differences of heart rate variability (HRV) and brain functional connectivity in primary motor, visual, and auditory cortices related to music performance. All participants performed aural, visual, and combined aural/visual tasks that involved a short musical passage and written excerpt from a novel. Pianists additionally performed a mental practicing task that involved imaginary public performance of a familiar piece with all physical and aural aspects of live performance. The EEG data of two …

The One With No Author: Exploration Of Text Generation Models For Friends, Sunwoo Ha Jan 2019

The One With No Author: Exploration Of Text Generation Models For Friends, Sunwoo Ha

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the topic of text generation using natural language generation and processing methods which allows machines to automatically create text. Over the past few years, there has been an increase in parodies of machine translation online. These posts have risen because it is difficult for machines to create sensible text which also has correct syntax. These machine generated text are unintentionally hilarious to humans and became a source of entertainment on social media. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are gaining popularity due to their success in image generation. Since the network has such great success in creating fake images, …

The Effects Of Altitude On Asthma And Investigation Of Traditional Andean Treatments, Ian Imants Pumpurs

Theses & ETDs

Due to asthma’s high prevalence worldwide, it is important to understand how environmental factors such as elevation affect the expression of the disease in order to ultimately improve the quality of life of sufferers. This study reviews the biological basis of the disease and examines the impact that low and high altitude have on the expression and severity of asthmatic symptoms. This review was conducted by examining published articles assessing asthma in specific communities located at various elevations. There were notable differences in the severity of asthmatic symptoms among children and adult populations in these communities. It was determined that …

Assessing Oral Proficiency In The Undergraduate Curriculum: Data From Spanish, Ashley Sands Jan 2019

Assessing Oral Proficiency In The Undergraduate Curriculum: Data From Spanish, Ashley Sands

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Students in university second-language programs expect to reach a certain level of oral proficiency by the time they complete their language requirements. Language Testing International (LTI) conducted extensive research to establish timelines regarding the number of hours of instruction required for native English speakers to reach specific proficiency levels in various second languages. Important to note, is that the learners used to establish these timelines differ from typical university students in that they are trained in the second language in very small classes in an intensive (near immersive) environment. Therefore, a comparison of LTI data with learners from typical university …

Writing For The Humanities And Arts, Shamecca A. Harris

Open Educational Resources

This dynamic English Composition course asks students to both create and engage with texts, in a variety of forms, that demonstrate how culture and personal experience inform a writer’s work. In this class, students will read and write voraciously about social, political, economic and cultural issues that influence their lived experiences and use the conventions of multiple genres to both reflect and respond to the times in which they live. Moreover, they will also consciously consider what it means to write academically at the college level through regular self-reflection and revision. In doing so, students will strengthen their rhetorical knowledge …

Parent Involvement In Contested Times: A Brief Analysis Of The Effects Of Anti-Immigrant Policies On Latinx Immigrant Parent Involvement, Maria Isabel Morales Jan 2019

Parent Involvement In Contested Times: A Brief Analysis Of The Effects Of Anti-Immigrant Policies On Latinx Immigrant Parent Involvement, Maria Isabel Morales

CGU Theses & Dissertations

How do perceived community and school cultural values affect Latinx immigrant parents’ decisions to engage with their children’s schools? What lessons might their experiences have for our understanding of parent involvement beyond the parameters of traditional models of parent involvement? Engaging parents as advocates for school success in the home is particularly important for English Language Learners (ELs). Tapping into the experiences of EL parents is a resource educators can use to increase parental involvement and, consequently, student academic achievement.

This qualitative case study grounded in Critical Inquiry and Cultural Historic Activity Theory examined the perceptions and experiences of 5 …

Maternal Health Interventions In Rural, Resource-Limited Countries, Katherine Tilton Jan 2019

Maternal Health Interventions In Rural, Resource-Limited Countries, Katherine Tilton

Theses and Graduate Projects

Pregnant women are continuing to die at unacceptable rates around the globe. According to the World Health Organization, complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death and disability among reproductive age women in developing countries. Maternal mortality is often a reflection of a combination of causes: medical conditions while giving birth (ie. hemorrhage, eclampsia, and sepsis); other pre-existing medical conditions (ie. malaria, diabetes, HIV/AIDS); and socio-economic factors (ie. access to contraception, religious beliefs, and political agendas) that when combined, largely compromise health care, most often in the poor, rural and marginalized communities. Nearly all maternal deaths (99%) …

In The Company Of Citizens: The Rhetorical Contours Of Singapore's Neoliberalism, Rohini S. Singh Jan 2019

In The Company Of Citizens: The Rhetorical Contours Of Singapore's Neoliberalism, Rohini S. Singh

All Faculty Articles

This essay explores how the language and priorities of the corporate world seep into the halls of government, and the ensuing implications of such rhetoric. Situating my analysis in Singapore's National Day Rally addresses from 1960 to 2018, I uncover two rhetorical signatures unique to Singaporean neoliberalism: the location of national character in economic performance, and the act of packaging and selling the nation to its people. I conclude by examining the implications of a corporate constitution of the nation for evoking affective ties to the nation, and by considering the value of Singapore's case to broader critiques of neoliberalism.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (Lgbt) Healthcare In Rural Settings: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Caitlin Cox Jan 2019

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (Lgbt) Healthcare In Rural Settings: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Caitlin Cox

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community is a unique population that has specific health issues and health care needs associated with lifestyle behaviors that increase risk for certain diseases. Health concerns include mental and behavioral health, issues associated with gender identity and relationships (i.e. intimate partner violence), sexually transmitted infections, and chronic illnesses. The research suggests poorer health outcomes for the LGBT population compared to heterosexual and/or cisgender counterparts. Most research conducted with LGBT populations occurred in more populated urban settings with very few studies focusing on this population in the rural context. Consequently, there is a paucity …

Semantic Bias As An Application Of The Universal Grammar Model In The Russian Language, Iryna Gural Jan 2019

Semantic Bias As An Application Of The Universal Grammar Model In The Russian Language, Iryna Gural

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The theory of the Universal Grammar developed by Chomsky has been known for many years. The main idea behind the theory was that the processing of the language does not depend on the culture but it universal among all the languages. Further psycholinguistic studies developed the ideas about schematic comprehension of the language, giving rise to the idea of the "garden path effect". Research focused on the processing of the ambiguous sentences and found the tendency for readers to prefer interpretations of specific sentence areas as objects. The current study summarizes the ideas of psycholinguistic study and incorporates a novel …

Development Of A Spanish Version Of The Main Concept Analysis For Analyzing Oral Disordered Discourse, Karla Simonet Jan 2019

Development Of A Spanish Version Of The Main Concept Analysis For Analyzing Oral Disordered Discourse, Karla Simonet

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Aphasia is an acquired language impairment caused by damage in the regions of the brain that support language. The Main Concept Analysis (MCA) is a published formal assessment battery that allows the quantification of the presence, accuracy, completeness, and efficiency of content in spoken discourse produced by persons with aphasia (PWA). It utilizes a sequential picture description task (with four sets of pictures) for language sample elicitation. The MCA results can also be used clinically for targeting appropriate interventions of aphasic output. The purpose of this research is to develop a Spanish adaptation of the MCA by establishing normative data …

Womens Perception Of Their Childbirth Expereinces: An Integrated Literature Review, Nancy M. Farmer Jan 2019

Womens Perception Of Their Childbirth Expereinces: An Integrated Literature Review, Nancy M. Farmer

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Pregnancy and childbirth are a unique and sacred time in many womens' lives and the process of giving birth often leaves women and families in a vulnerable position.

This integrated literature review examined birthing experiences from the maternal perspective and focused on the short-term and long-term implications of negatively perceived maternal experiences. While there are several international studies, only a few have been published studies from the United States.

The integrated review showed a significant impact of provider-client communication and shared decision making on a woman's overall perception of her birthing experience. Reports of excess intervention, lack of informed consent, …

Willingness To Communicate And International Students' Use Of L2, Michelle Verbitskaya Jan 2019

Willingness To Communicate And International Students' Use Of L2, Michelle Verbitskaya

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in the second language (L2) is the "readiness to enter into discourse" which is considered to be the direct precursor of students' communication in L2 (MacIntyre et al., 1998). Oral language is thought to precede written language which creates an assumption that ongoing refining of oral skills may impact writing fluency. In respect to WTC model, there have been several versions that describe the construct (MacIntyre et al., 1998; Wen & Clement, 2003; Matsuoka, 2006). This study references self-efficacy, a cognitive variable in Matsuoka's (2006) proposed model, when analyzing writing as a phenomenon in relation to …
