Chinese Language Teacher Competency: A Literature Review For A Study Series, Huiwen Li, Hui Pang, Zhenzhen Hu
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
This literature study reviews the definition and the most significant research studies of teacher competency. A chronological order, from the 20th to the 21st century, is followed to introduce the development of the teacher competency. The current status of the Chinese (as a foreign language) teacher competency research is also revealed, which shows a big gap that needs to be filled.
First Language Transfer In Mandarin Compositions Written By Learners With English As Mother Tongue, Rui Liu
First Language Transfer In Mandarin Compositions Written By Learners With English As Mother Tongue, Rui Liu
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
To help Mandarin learners express their ideas in compositions is one of the toughest jobs for teachers of Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) who frequently find that their students’ works are rife with inappropriate expressions as well as grammatical errors. Mother tongue transfer, which is an important part of second language acquisition study, has always been used to account for the various problems occurring in second language learners’ study process. This study carries out both quantitative and qualitative analyses on the errors in compositions made by Mandarin learners with English as their mother tongue. Four categories of errors are …

Motivating Students To Talk: Ted Conference In University-Based Chinese Language Classrooms, Danping Wang
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
This paper presents an innovative teaching method that uses TED conference to stimulate and support learners of Chinese in improving their speaking skills. In non-target language countries, students are often reluctant to use Chinese in real life. This study overviews a case where TED conferences were integrated into a university-based Chinese language course in New Zealand. It also discusses the major findings emerging from implementing this innovative pedagogy as well as the recommendations for future research. While motivating students to use Chinese in public setting, the approach has also enhanced critical thinking skills and co-learning in language classrooms. This paper …

Deep Analogical Inference As The Origin Of Hypotheses, Mark Blokpoel, Todd Wareham, Pim Haselager, Ivan Toni, Iris Van Rooij
The Journal of Problem Solving
The ability to generate novel hypotheses is an important problem-solving capacity of humans. This ability is vital for making sense of the complex and unfamiliar world we live in. Often, this capacity is characterized as an inference to the best explanation—selecting the “best” explanation from a given set of candidate hypotheses. However, it remains unclear where these candidate hypotheses originate from. In this paper we contribute to computationally explaining these origins by providing the contours of the computational problem solved when humans generate hypotheses. The origin of hypotheses, otherwise known as abduction proper, is hallmarked by seven properties: (1) isotropy, …

Social-Emotional Learning (Sel) In A Field Course: Preservice Teachers Practice Sel-Supportive Instructional Strategies, Judy L. Sugishita
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
This action research study examined social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies taught during a year-long elementary teaching credential field course to examine (a) what SEL strategies look like in practice, and (b) what training effects might be seen among twelve preservice student teacher (PST) participants. Part of a two-course clinical practice study, this paper focused solely on the research done in the field course during the 2013-2014 academic year. Drawing from program-based and integrated SEL literature, the strategies studied supported (a) active engagement in learning, (b) equitable access to instruction, including diversity and differentiated strategies, and (c) learner-centered classroom discipline. Frequency …

Conflicting Perspectives: A Comparison Of Edtpa Intended Outcomes To Actual Experiences Of Teacher Candidates And Educators In New York City Schools, Deborah Greenblatt
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
The edTPA is a performance-based assessment of teacher candidates created by the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity (SCALE) and nationally scored by Pearson Education. It is also promoted by American Association of Colleges of Teacher Educators (AACTE) as a “standards-based assessment.” As of the spring of 2018, the edTPA is used as a requirement for program accreditation or teacher candidate certification or program completion in 18 states.
This article analyzes the stated goals, objectives, and benefits made by SCALE and AACTE and compares them to data collected from interviews and open-ended questions with teacher candidates and teacher educators …

Teacher Perceptions Of Emergent Bilingual Students And Connection To Pedagogical Resources And Strategy Use, Sarah A. Rozny
Theses and Dissertations
This research considers what informs a teacher's dispositions towards his/her emergent bilingual students and in what way these dispositions influence the resources the teacher calls upon and strategies that he/she employs to teach these students. The findings for this study indicate that more positive dispositions towards their emergent bilingual students is connected to exposure to a foreign culture, attempts to learn a foreign language, experiencing teaching emergent bilingual students, and the way the teacher views his or her role as a teacher. More positive teacher dispositions were also connected to a greater use of Just Good Teaching and Linguistically Responsive …

Transition From Nursing Student To Registered Nurse In Singapore: Professional And Organizational Perspectives, Ming Wei Jeffrey Woo, Stuart Andrew Newman
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
This is a mixed-method study reporting newly graduated registered nurses (NGRNS) transition experience to professional practice in Singapore, represented by three themes; "personal", "professional" and "organizational". NGRNs experience some degree of unpreparedness, owing to theory-to-practice gap. Likewise, degree and types of healthcare organizational supports might also impact their transition experience.
Treatment Fidelity In Aphasia Randomised Controlled Trials, Emily Brogan, Natalie Ciccone, Erin Godecke
Treatment Fidelity In Aphasia Randomised Controlled Trials, Emily Brogan, Natalie Ciccone, Erin Godecke
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: Treatment fidelity is at the heart of evidence-based practice and treatment fidelity processes help to determine the ‘active ingredients’ of a treatment. Hinckley and Douglas in 2013 reviewed treatment fidelity processes in published aphasia trials and found 14% of aphasia treatment studies reported treatment fidelity. This led the authors to call for journals to make treatment fidelity reporting mandatory.
Aims: To review the implementation and reporting of treatment fidelity processes in recent aphasia RCTs to update on practices since 2012.
Methods and Procedures: Aphasia RCTs published between 2012 and 2017 were sourced from online databases speechBITE, …
Desire, Frustration, And Resolution In The Ending(S) Of Troilus And Criseyde, Kenny Martin
Desire, Frustration, And Resolution In The Ending(S) Of Troilus And Criseyde, Kenny Martin
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
This essay analyzes the final stanzas of Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde in order to challenge the critical commonplace that the poem’s ending is fraught, fragmented, unsatisfactory, or ultimately inconclusive. It questions the traditional view that the ending is a conspicuous departure from the poetic mode of the earlier poem, as well as the view that the final stanzas are dominated by an ideological struggle between earthly and divine love. Through a close reading of the final five stanzas of the poem—and with particular attention to their echoes throughout the larger work— the essay seeks to elucidate how Chaucer’s poetics of …
Listening With Humility, Diana Gonzalez
Listening With Humility, Diana Gonzalez
Northwestern Review
Presented in 2017 at the Internationalizing Christian Higher Education conference of the International Association for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education (IAPCHE) at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, this paper extends the results presented in the author’s 2016 paper, “Culturally and Linguistically Humble: A Preparation for Living Abroad.” Taking the virtue of humility and integrating that into the training for Northwestern College students going abroad for a semester, the author’s new paper both establishes how reflecting on humility has helped students to engage cross-culturally and also links humility with the conference theme of “listening to learn; learning to listen.”
Lessons From Lesser Kings: Irony And Kingship In Books Iv And V Of Bede’S Ecclesiastical History, Robert Winn
Lessons From Lesser Kings: Irony And Kingship In Books Iv And V Of Bede’S Ecclesiastical History, Robert Winn
Northwestern Review
Bede, the early eighth-century monastic author, discusses many kings as well as bishops in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People. In this History, Bede assumed his earlier delineation of Christian kingship in his commentary On Ezra and Nehemiah: that a Christian king ought to protect and promote the church and be deferential with the clergy as he cooperates with them to regulate the Christian people. However, Bede’s claim in Books IV and V of his History that the age of Bishop Theodore was “the happiest time for the English people” because, in part, they benefitted from …
Deeper Into Superficiality, Donald H. Wacome
Deeper Into Superficiality, Donald H. Wacome
Northwestern Review
Science profoundly undermines our traditional self-conception, portraying humans not as categorically different than and superior to the rest of creation, but material things, the contingent product of vastly improbable natural processes. We are superficial features of the universe, not among its basic or necessitated constituents. For some, this threatens the conviction that we are made in God’s Image. However, the author argues that God chose to create us but not to design us. The Christian faith, looking to God’s nature and revealed purposes in creation, finds resources not merely to cope with the scientific erosion of the human self-image, but …
The Influence Of Selected Demographic Factors On The Retention Of Middle School Instrumental Music Students, Evan Hoylman
The Influence Of Selected Demographic Factors On The Retention Of Middle School Instrumental Music Students, Evan Hoylman
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Music programs across the country, particularly at the secondary level, are much smaller than should be expected. Large numbers of students (and adults, for that matter) report that they enjoy music and listen to it often for pleasure. Yet, in many high schools, less than a quarter of the school population participates in school music. Why is this so? Students in elementary schools are typically engaged in music study, either through general music classes and/or band or orchestra participation, but retention of students in secondary school music study is a problem. The purpose of this study was to examine the …

Increasing Engagement Of English Learners Through Universal Design For Learning, Melinda S. Eichhorn, Amanda E. Lowry, Kristen Burke
Increasing Engagement Of English Learners Through Universal Design For Learning, Melinda S. Eichhorn, Amanda E. Lowry, Kristen Burke
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
English learners (ELs) are the fastest growing segment of K–12 students. When ELs do not respond to instruction as quickly as their English-speaking peers, teachers may focus on their deficits and wrongly label them as having a learning disability. In this article on the universal design for learning engagement guidelines, we summarize how we have anticipated learning barriers and increased engagement with academic content for ELs in our practice. By teaching strategies for self-regulation and individual coping skills, providing guided practice and support to sustain effort, and giving students various ways to achieve the same goal in a safe learning …
The Impact Of Subtitled Movies On Vocabulary Development, Alisa Sadiku
The Impact Of Subtitled Movies On Vocabulary Development, Alisa Sadiku
International Journal of Business and Technology
Learning new vocabulary compromises a significant factor for success within language learning since without the adequate knowledge of words and their meaning, learners are not able to use the target language efficiently. Moreover, vocabulary tends to be forgotten if it is not acquired and used through the right methods that will provide learners with language inputs in genuine target language environment. In this regard, the increasing access to different multimedia and technology resources facilitate spontaneous vocabulary acquisition for the contemporary age learners. In particular, movies with subtitles can be a great tool in bringing students closer to authentic real life …
The Right To Use The Albanian Language As An Official Language In Macedonia: The New Draft Law, Its Content, Advancement And Comparison, Bekim Kadriu, Ylber Sela
The Right To Use The Albanian Language As An Official Language In Macedonia: The New Draft Law, Its Content, Advancement And Comparison, Bekim Kadriu, Ylber Sela
International Journal of Business and Technology
The use of Albanian language as official language in Macedonia has been a challenge especially after the Ohrid Framework Agreement (OFA) in 2001. Before 2001, Albanian language was defined as an official language and was used only in private matters as well in primary and secondary education. With the OFA and Constitutional changes in 2002, the language that is spoken by 20% of the population in the country was defined as an official language, but it’s application in practice was left to be regulated by e specific law. The law was adopted in 2008, 6 years after the constitutional changes. …

Reputation And Rurality: Using A Montana-Authored Text To Talk About Agency And Language In The Secondary English Classroom, Catherine Dorian
The Montana English Journal
This article offers curriculum as well as rationale for teaching Debra Magpie Earling’s Montana-based novel, Perma Red. I begin with my own experience teaching the novel as it stumbled into my lap as and meandered its way into my rural classroom, where Earling’s language challenges students to deconstruct and further understand issues in agency pertaining to sexual assault and consent. Then, I explain methods and strategies I use to teach language and close-reading to my twelfth grade students while they read this novel, my aim being to make teaching this unit as accessible as possible for all Montana teachers. …
Using 3d Card-Making Project To Motivate Students’ Writing, Dan Li
Using 3d Card-Making Project To Motivate Students’ Writing, Dan Li
The Montana English Journal
Based on the ideas of inclusive education and multiple intelligences, I advocate using a “3D card” project to inspire students' writing. A 3D card project incorporates sessions on organization's logo appreciation, discussion, letter design, slogan design, and 3D card making as well as a writing task. All of these steps provide students with background information on the topic. In this article, I use these steps to teach my diverse middle school students to design a logo and write a statement for a nonprofit organization.
