Combating Judicial Misconduct: A Stoic Approach, Michael D. Cicchini
Combating Judicial Misconduct: A Stoic Approach, Michael D. Cicchini
Buffalo Law Review
Judicial ethics rules require criminal court judges to be competent, even-tempered, and impartial. In reality, however, many judges are grossly ignorant of the law, incredibly hostile toward the defense, and outright biased in favor of the state. Such acts of judicial misconduct pose serious problems for the criminal defense lawyer and violate many of the defendant’s statutory and constitutional rights.
This Article presents a framework for the defense lawyer to use in combating judicial misconduct. The approach is rooted in a principle of Stoic philosophy called “negative visualization.” That is, the lawyer should anticipate and visualize judicial incompetence, hostility, and …

Parsing Code-Switched Taglish Language By Creating Constituents, Fadiah Qudah
Parsing Code-Switched Taglish Language By Creating Constituents, Fadiah Qudah
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
When extracting meaning from language, a common first step is to break down language into constituents, or words that work together as a unit. This task, known as parsing, typically follows a specific grammar in order decompose the language into its underlying structure composed of constituents. Difficulties with this grammar-based parsing occur, however, with real-world natural language due to its unstructured nature. Code-switching, the phenomenon of alternating between languages while communicating, further complicates this task by requiring us to parse based on two (or more) languages instead of one. In this thesis, a data-driven method to parse code-switched language into …

Transportation planners and ride hailing platforms such as Uber and Lyft use their riders feedback to assess their services and monitor customer satisfaction. Social media websites such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and in particular Twitter provides a large dataset of micro-texts by users who regularly post to their social media accounts about their grievances with their ride experience. This data is often unorganized and intractable to process because of it’s extremely large size which is continuously increasing daily. In this project, we collected ride hailing service relevant text data from Twitter around New York and developed a novel Convolutional Neural …

Social media has become an empowering agent for individual voices and freedom of expression. Yet, it can also serve as a breeding ground for hate speech. According to a Pew Research Center study, 41% of Americans have been personally subjected to harassing behavior online, 66% have witnessed these behaviors directed at others, and 18% have been subjected to particularly severe forms of harassment online, such as physical threats, harassment over a sustained period, sexual harassment, or stalking. Recently, many research studies have tried to understand online hate speech and its implications, focusing on detecting and characterizing hate speech. One limitation …
Exploring The Relationship Of Sound With The Urban Environment: A Strategic Inquiry On The Impacts Of And Design And Planning Responses To Sound In Transit-Oriented Developments (Tods), Yalcin Yildirim
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
Over the last decades, Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs) have stimulated heated debates. Researchers have fully explored the TODs' quality-of-life characteristics; however, sound/noise impacts are under-explored in the field. This dissertation explores the planning and design implications of sounds in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area TODs. TODs include potentials to cover a broad range of sounds that improve the quality-of-life (QoL). Since sound studies should not only rely on in-situ sound measurements and it should also examine the subjective aspects of the sound as the dissertation examines the perception of the individuals on sounds in TODs, the project required a certain number …

Predicting Juvenile Delinquency In Texas Public Schools: Response To A Texas Legislator's Challenge, Wendy Brower
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
The purpose of this study is to engage in a systematic inquiry of juvenile delinquency in Texas public schools and respond to the statement made by a member of the Texas Legislature who challenged public school officials to predict delinquency in order to keep students out of the court system. The study is based on the assumption that a profile for juvenile delinquency can be developed using the existing data submitted by Texas public school districts through the Public Education Information. This is a quantitative study that first explored teh profile for deliqnuent and non-deliquent at-risk students. next, the study …
Counting The Number Of Possible Fuzzy Controllers, Ambalal Vinayak Patel
Counting The Number Of Possible Fuzzy Controllers, Ambalal Vinayak Patel
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
Fuzzy logic is prominent among all types of logics due to the inherent ability to express human intelligence qualitatively. Thus, it is being used in a variety of applications to design embedded intelligent systems. Although it originated to model the complex and ill-defined systems, it eventually also resulted in utilization for designing the intelligent controllers. While designing the fuzzy logic controllers (FLC), we came across a major challenge of selecting the various elements thereof. The flexibility in selecting the combinations of elements leads to arrive at a number of FLCs. Therefore, the challenge came across in selecting the suitable set …

Physical Activity Patterns Among Undergraduate Colleges At The University Of Texas At Arlington, Jeanne Bandalaria
2019 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The correlation between undergraduate majors/colleges and their corresponding levels of physical activity was investigated at the University of Texas at Arlington. The relationship between the two subjects of research was determined by the method of a survey, as inspired by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The IPAQ serves to analyze data through a series of questions that determine an individual’s weekly average of vigorous to moderate exercise based on their job, major, leisure activity, and time spent sedentary. Pie charts and tables are presented to depict the survey’s findings of undergraduate major, college, and times of physical and sedentary …

Using Orality To Improve Student Writing, B. Webster Freeman
Using Orality To Improve Student Writing, B. Webster Freeman
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The connections between orality and writing date to the ancient rhetoricians and continue to influence the way we write and are written every day; however, overtly connecting the two in the composition classroom is often overlooked and often underutilized by modern composition teachers. What the ancient rhetoricians did, though, was directly opposed to what we do. They used writing to improve orality whereas I advocate the use of orality to improve writing. We need to help students understand that the writer and reader collaborate to make the performance. A typical session with me as tutor involves my reading aloud or …

40 Years On: Reflections On The Iranian Revolution, Sevgi Adak, Touraj Atabaki, Kamran Matin, Valentine M. Moghadam
Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series
The three articles compiled here are based on a panel discussion held at the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) on 23 May 2019.
Marking the 40th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution, its aim was to revisit the debate on the causes and impact of the revolution for Iran and beyond.
Three questions in particular guided the interdisciplinary dialogue and political reflections on this world historical event: How should we analyse the conditions underpinning the revolutionary dynamics in Iran in the global context of the 1970s? How should the Iranian Revolution be analysed in an …

Audio Noise Filter Using Cycle Consistent Adversarial Network - Cyclegan Anf, Nam Son Nguyen, Tengpeng Li, Xiaoqian Zhang, Bo Sheng, Teng Wang, Jiayin Wang
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Speech enhance methods base on traditional digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms or adaptive filters can effectively suppress stationary noises. However, they don't provide viable solution for the variety of non-stationary noises that exist in our everyday life. Smart voice assistants such as Google Home and Alexa deteriorate their performance mostly due to non-stationary noises. In this paper we introduce CycleGAN ANF, a neural network approach that can learn to reduce both stationary and non-stationary noises, totally unsupervised. CycleGAN ANF is capable of reducing undesired interference by reading in a raw audio sample from a set X (speech mixed with noises) …

Feminist Friendship As An Affective Engagement Through The Arts: A Decolonial And Posthuman Becoming-With Rebeca Lane's Alma Mestiza, Miguel Ángel Blanco Martínez, Paola Mendoza Téllez-Girón
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
This paper considers friendship as an affective terrain of feminist alliance among subjects that belong to territories with a colonial record responding to the colonial/modern gender system (Lugones 2007) through the arts. Friendship is here conceptualized as an engagement of feminist solidarity unfolding within theoretical and practical models of change and resistance against the logics of cultural imperialism (Lugones and Spelman 1983). Turning friendship into a polyphonic feminist reaction, this work is conducted by acknowledging the need to foster dialogues where different authorial voices and feminist positionalities meet, reflect, and speak. The paper settles the encounter between its authors in …

Volume 28: Affect, Robby Hardesty, Alina Hechler
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
The 2018-19 Editorial Collective is pleased to present the 28th volume of disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory. Our inspiration for this odd bundle of pages is rooted in the aesthetic of the self-printed zine. While we regret that we couldn't sneak into Miller Hall in the middle of the night to guerrilla-copy the entire issue on a late-80s black-and-white Xerox, we are proud to say that each page of this volume was assembled entirely by hand. Every page is bordered or backgrounded by collages: these are pages that peel and flake, assembled from bits and pieces cut up …
Examining The Relation Between Social Capital And Physical Activity Across Life Stages, Leigh Ann Ganzar
Examining The Relation Between Social Capital And Physical Activity Across Life Stages, Leigh Ann Ganzar
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Physical inactivity in adults increases the risk for adverse health outcomes, including non-communicable diseases and premature death. Children who are not sufficiently physically active face increased risk for non-communicable disease risk factors, mental health issues, and poor academic performance. Despite these risks, the majority of people do not achieve sufficient physical activity levels. Social capital is an aspect of the social environment that can shape physical activity behavior throughout different life stages. The three studies of this dissertation sought to assess the association between social capital, from both the cohesion and network perspectives, and physical activity behavior in different life …

Understanding The Bridging Social Capital Of Latinx Immigrant Students In The American Southeast, Clifford Joseph Lee
All Dissertations
In this dissertation, I report the findings of an ethnographic study I conducted in a large suburban high school in the Upstate of South Carolina. The purpose of this study was to understand the factors that affect the formation of the bridging social capital of Latinx immigrant high school students and to provide recommendations to school leaders. For this study, I interviewed eleven Latinx immigrant high school students in Spanish about their experiences as they integrated into their new academic environment. In addition to the interviews, I conducted observations in several common areas of the school and collected stylized written …
Dispatches From Queer Potluck: [Extra]Ordinary Affects As A Project Of Belonging, Greg Niedt
Dispatches From Queer Potluck: [Extra]Ordinary Affects As A Project Of Belonging, Greg Niedt
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
This essay takes an approach that is part autobiography, part meditation on theory, in order to engage with the tension between "ordinary affects" (Stewart 2007) and the queer extraordinary. Drawing on my own experiences as part of an intentional community in Philadelphia, I consider what it means for me to experience affect in queer space. How does that manifest in the body, and the world in turn? How do these experiences fit into a larger desire for kinship and belonging? My purpose here is not to make broad claims about what affect is (or is not), but to provide a …

Behind The Scenes Of Noninvasive Brain– Computer Interfaces: A Review Of Electroencephalography Signals, How They Are Recorded, And Why They Matter, Kevin M. Pitt, Jonathan S. Brumberg, Jeremy D. Burnison, Jyutika Mehta, Juhi Kidwai
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Purpose: Brain–computer interface (BCI) techniques may provide computer access for individuals with severe physical impairments. However, the relatively hidden nature of BCI control obscures how BCI systems work behind the scenes, making it difficult to understand “how” electroencephalography (EEG) records the BCIrelated brain signals, “what” brain signals are recorded by EEG, and “why” these signals are targeted for BCI control. Furthermore, in the field of speech-languagehearing, signals targeted for BCI application have been of primary interest to clinicians and researchers in the area of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). However, signals utilized for BCI control reflect sensory, cognitive, and motor …
Feeling It: Toward Style As Culturally Structured Intuition, Keith Rhodes
Feeling It: Toward Style As Culturally Structured Intuition, Keith Rhodes
Department of English: Faculty Publications
I have been moved to write a serious article about teaching style not because I have great and earth-shaking method to impart, but in some sense because I do not, even after years of study—including the small bit of empirical research at the core of this article. Style, as it turns out, remains as difficult, complex, and ultimately intuitive as most of the rest of writing. I hope, ultimately, to encourage writing teachers to focus more attention on style, basing approaches on what we already know rather than waiting and hoping for some flawless system to materialize. Indeed, by the …

Childhood socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with numerous aspects of cognitive development and disparities in academic achievement. The specific environmental factors that contribute to these disparities remain poorly understood. We used observational methods to characterize three aspects of the early environment that may contribute to SES-related differences in cognitive development: violence exposure, cognitive stimulation, and quality of the physical environment. We evaluated the associations of these environmental characteristics with associative memory, cued attention, and memory-guided attention in a sample of 101 children aged 60–75 months. We further investigated whether these specific cognitive abilities mediated the association between SES and academic …

Contextualizing Interpreter Training In Africa: Two Case Studies From Kenya, Carmen Delgado Luchner
Contextualizing Interpreter Training In Africa: Two Case Studies From Kenya, Carmen Delgado Luchner
International Journal of Interpreter Education
This article explores the potential and limitations of interpreter training in Africa. It considers relevant features of the context, namely, the kind of multilingualism that characterizes postcolonial societies (with a coexistence of official, national, regional and vehicular languages within the same geographic space), and the social and geographic distribution of these languages within and across countries. My argument is based on two different interpreter training initiatives implemented in Kenya between 2010 and 2015: a Master’s degree program in conference interpreting for Kenyan and international students with English, French and/or Swahili; and a Certificate program in community interpreting for refugees from …
