Use Of Mobile Phones In Scholarly Publications: A Review Of The Emerging Behaviour Of The 21st Century Scholars, Sudhier K G Pillai Dr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Scholars engage in intellectual enquiries which is why they are considered to be the cornerstones of any research geared towards solving societal problems or testing phenomena. This makes their research outputs needed to be readily available for public consumption. For quite long, scholars are rated based on the number of scholarly contributions they make. While mobile phone has diffused, adopted and used as part of our everyday life, researchers neglected the dimensions of attitudes of scholars for adopting and use of mobile phone technology in the course of their scholarly communication. The components of attitudes of scholars for adopting and …

Emerging Teacher-Leaders For English Learners: A Professional Development Model In Rural Florida, Raisa Ankeny, Nidza Marichal, Maria Coady
School Leadership Review
This paper describes an ongoing Professional Development (PD) program that aimed to prepare teacher-leaders for rural English learner (EL) students. We delineate the theoretical underpinnings of the PD design and describe the two-year graduate coursework program with onsite coaching in rural schools in detail. We define rurality and the context of ELs in the rural partner school district and describe the PD coursework, which was adapted to meet the local rural educational needs of the participants. At its outset, participants reflected on the overall PD through online discussions, surveys, and focus group interviews. Data revealed that the participants found the …

Principals As Instructional Leaders: An Embedded Descriptive Case Study Of One Rural School's Effort To Improve Student Outcomes Through Reading Plus, Joshua W. Tremont, Nathan R. Templeton
School Leadership Review
The purpose of this descriptive embedded case study is to address a reading literacy problem at a rural school district through a principal’s instructional leadership and to determine whether student outcomes improved. Campus principals are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring every student receives high-quality instruction that aligns with research-driven best practices by implementing current interim assessment cycles to track classroom trends and determine appropriate interventions (Texas Administrative Code [TAC §149.2001.]). However, the manner in which the principal influences student achievement varies based on leader capacity and school setting. While leadership in rural settings is as diverse as the community …
Non-Sovereign Poetics: Rethinking Nationalism And Independence In Puerto Rico, Martinique, And Guadeloupe, Fély Catan
Non-Sovereign Poetics: Rethinking Nationalism And Independence In Puerto Rico, Martinique, And Guadeloupe, Fély Catan
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation reconsiders the notion of political sovereignty, independence and nationalism in the non-sovereign Caribbean context. I explore the ways in which writers and artists from Puerto Rico, Martinique, and Guadeloupe envision alternative epistemologies to the Western concepts of sovereignty and the nation-state. By questioning the traditional model of state sovereignty through the linguistic, aesthetic, and thematic components of their texts, plays, and visual, I argue that these artists have expressed other ways to be sovereign. This dissertation analyzes a defiant artistic production that originates in a contemporary crossroads for economic survival in a Caribbean context. I investigate how the …

Perception Of Management Success In The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary: A Comparative Analysis Between Residents And Visitors, Charline Tina Quenée
Open Access Theses
The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is a multiple-use marine protected area with a history of tension between management entities and local stakeholders. At the root of the issues are differences in the definition of “successful management” between these two stakeholder groups and recent administrative vacancies within the Sanctuary’s management staff have made it difficult for the Sanctuary to update its management plan. This study surveyed two primary stakeholder groups in the Florida Keys in order to gain understanding of their perceptions of successful management. A comprehensive intercept survey detailing various management objectives was presented to participants in person using …
English Corner: A Guide For Teachers, Tom Fay
English Corner: A Guide For Teachers, Tom Fay
MA TESOL Collection
Throughout China, in both private and public schools, from kindergarten to university, there is a ‘class’ called ‘English Corner.’ In some places, ‘English Corner’ is supposed to be an informal, loose environment for people to communicate in English. In other places, ‘English Corner’ is a monthly event with a stage show, singing, dancing, and even a speech competition. ‘English Corner’ can be held in parks, libraries, university campuses, bars, cafes, or even in private homes. For many teachers in China, this ill-defined class can be their most dreaded lesson of the day, a class where at the worst of times, …

Journal of Research Initiatives
This study focuses on the position of mother languages in Greek education at the level of educational policy, demonstrating the necessity of their further emergence based on modern scientific findings on the benefits of bilingualism. Through an effort to record a set of obstacles that make it difficult for them to join the curriculum, a framework is proposed to be used for the language repertoire of all pupils, so that their rights are respected in practice and their linguistic richness serves as a source of enrichment for the whole population. The implementation of practices that could enhance the free and …

PREFACIO

European colonialism is an extremely controversial affair in world history that is also discussed today. This paper explores the influence of these happenings as the world incorporates the culture of European in every step of life. Europe dominated almost the entire world and its people were leaders in science and technology. European languages, literature, and culture spread all over the globe. Decisions in Europe largely determined global events for centuries. The other continents did not approach European power until after World War 1 or World War 2. Europe consisted of constantly competing nations, and this competition spurred development. Europe achieved …

Meditation: A Balance Of Human And Social Growth In Education, Edward Cromarty
Journal of Research Initiatives
This best practice article explores meditation as a holistic method of nurturing the balanced integration of human and social development in educational environments. It inquiries into the meaning of meditation and considers a dilemma that exists between the holistic meditation practices of its traditional religious and yogic practitioners, and recent academic studies of meditation in educational contexts which often seek scientific explanations focusing on quantitative studies for utilitarian and institutional purposes. In performing the research, this article examines the writings and Dharma talks of two world-renowned Buddhist monks and meditation experts about the practice and purpose of meditation. The article …

Children who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) are at-risk for language delays and associated developmental challenges that impact academic, social, and communication skills. Technology Assisted Language Intervention (TALI) is a novel approach that focuses on using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as an intervention for children who are DHH. Results from a recent pilot study suggested that TALI may be a viable approach for enhancing spoken language and communication. In this study, we examined the social validity of TALI using interviews and focus groups. We collected qualitative data from parents, caregivers, and professionals working with children who are DHH to …

Recognition Of Spelled Out Words In Spoken Queries, Felix Weissenberger, Victor Cărbune, Bogdan Prisacari
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes techniques to enhance automated speech recognition by enabling automatic recognition of words spelled out by users. Machine learning techniques are utilized to detect explicit user intent to spell out a word as well as detect spelled out words without an explicitly stated user intent. If it is determined that the user is spelling a word, a spelling mode is triggered wherein received letters are concatenated together to form a word. If the user permits, data that includes the user context, audio of the word, audio of the user spelling out the word, and the textual representation of …
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Veterans Returning From Combat: Impact On Social Reintegration, Rod Van Pelt
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Veterans Returning From Combat: Impact On Social Reintegration, Rod Van Pelt
Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition frequently observed in soldiers and veterans. The reintegration of veterans returning from combat is a challenge that state and federal administrations, as well as civilian structures and workplaces, face routinely. Despite PTSD being a public health issue with a socioeconomic impact, non-scholarly debate is the primary source of information on the non-medical burden of PTSD. The majority of scholarly evidence focuses on PTSD primarily as a medical condition, including when addressing the problem from a socioeconomic standpoint. In fact, most of the recent scholarly evidence points to specific areas of PTSD, such …
Explicitation Vs. Implicitation: Discourse Markersin English-Into-Arabic Translation, Mohammed Farghal, Abdullah Samateh
Explicitation Vs. Implicitation: Discourse Markersin English-Into-Arabic Translation, Mohammed Farghal, Abdullah Samateh
Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات
The present paper aims to examine Blum-Kulka’s (1986) claim that cases of explicitation in the target text (TT) correspond to cases of implicitation in the source text (ST). A corpus of three discourse markers (DMs) in an Arabic translation is examined against the DMs in the English ST. The findings show that there are three types of correspondence in DMs: explicitation to explicitation, explicitation to implicitation, and explicitation to zero equivalents. The paper concludes that the syndetic nature of Arabic discourse, unlike the asyndetic nature of its English counterpart, accounts for the presence of several cases of DMs which do …
Is Innovative Auditory Technology Here To Stay, Krish Galani
Is Innovative Auditory Technology Here To Stay, Krish Galani
Student Work
Innovation is often seen as a necessary constant throughout history, as it is our survival mechanism, evolving from humanity’s inherent ignorance/flaws. However, as society pushes for innovation at an ever-increasing rate, should we be concerned about its implications on the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) in the United States? The DHH has been quite sensitive to this surplus of innovation, with an increasing amount of ‘auditory aid related’ technologies being marketed every day. What does this mean for deaf culture? More importantly, how will these innovations shape the future of deaf behavior and linguistics?

Bruno Latour And The Myth Of Autonomous Academic Discipline: Rethinking Education In The Light Of Various Modes Of Existence, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background: Issues of identity, interdependence, relationality and violence are far larger than the human species alone, although humanity has often pretended as if it alone were the beneficiaries of studying such ideas.
Aim: Pedagogically, the complexity of existence beyond human being must influence the traditional humanities curriculum or risk further isolation and alienation within humanity-dominant narratives.
Setting: As climate change continues to alter our comprehension of what is truly at stake in the survival of life on this planet, however, humankind needs a complete rethinking of its relationship with the multiple forms of life that dwell alongside it, as well …

A Phenomenological Study Of Parent Experiences With Postsecondary-Admission Counseling, Anthony Espitia
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to better understand parent experiences with the postsecondary-admission counseling of high school students in California. As a state, California exceeds the ASCA’s student-to-counselor national recommendations, impacting the delivery of postsecondary-admission counseling on high school campuses. To understand the postsecondary-admission counseling experiences in California, a qualitative phenomenological study consisting of 12 parents of current or recently graduated high school students was utilized. Open-ended interviews captured parents’ lived experiences with the postsecondary-admission counseling of California high school counselors. The data analysis for this study was accomplished by utilizing a four-step process outlined by Moustakas (1994), which …

Identification Of Visual Attentional Regions Of The Temporoparietal Junction In Individual Subjects Using A Vivid, Novel Oddball Paradigm, Kathryn J. Devaney, Maya L. Rosen, Emily J. Levin, David C. Somers
Neuroscience: Faculty Publications
The Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ) of the cerebral cortex is a functionally heterogeneous region that also exhibits substantial anatomical variability across individuals. As a result, the precise functional organization of TPJ remains controversial. One or more regions within TPJ support visual attention processes, but the “attention TPJ” is difficult to functionally observe in individual subjects, and thus is typically identified by averaging across a large group of subjects. However, group-averaging also blurs localization and can obscure functional organization. Here, we develop and test an individual-subject approach to identifying attentional TPJ. This paradigm employs novel oddball images with a strong visual drive …
Skillful Disposition And Responsiveness In Mental Imagery, Christopher Joseph G. An
Skillful Disposition And Responsiveness In Mental Imagery, Christopher Joseph G. An
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
This paper aims to explore and expand on Wittgenstein’s remarks on the nature of mental imagery. Despite some rather cryptic passages and obvious objections, his notion of mental imagery as possessing a constitutive (and not merely added) element of expressive thought and conceptuality offers critical insights linking perceptual capacities with our shared practices. In particular I seek to further develop Wittgenstein’s claim that perceptual impressions presuppose a “mastery of a technique.” I argue that this sense of technique, understood as acquired conceptual capacities, can explain and capture the rich and varied spectrum of expressive visual content that can be accessed …
A Hybrid Approach For Multi-Document Text Summarization, Rashmi Varma
A Hybrid Approach For Multi-Document Text Summarization, Rashmi Varma
Master's Projects
Text summarization has been a long studied topic in the field of natural language processing. There have been various approaches for both extractive text summarization as well as abstractive text summarization. Summarizing texts for a single document is a methodical task. But summarizing multiple documents poses as a greater challenge. This thesis explores the application of Latent Semantic Analysis, Text-Rank, Lex-Rank and Reduction algorithms for single document text summarization and compares it with the proposed approach of creating a hybrid system combining each of the above algorithms, individually, with Restricted Boltzmann Machines for multi-document text summarization and analyzing how all …

What Is A Learning Ecosystem?, 21cleo Research Team
21CLEO Research Project Blog Posts
During the past year, we've come to realize that the term learning ecosystem is widely used, but not usually defined or widely understood. Rather than taking the term for granted, we crafted this blog post to
• explore the origins of the term,
• discuss what it has come to mean, and its limitations
• explain how and why we are using the term in our study despite its limitations.
