Gender Differences In Early Communication, Language Acquisition And Development: A Descriptive Study, رشا عبد الرضا سعيد, رشا عبد المنعم عزيز Dec 2019

Gender Differences In Early Communication, Language Acquisition And Development: A Descriptive Study, رشا عبد الرضا سعيد, رشا عبد المنعم عزيز

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Parents pay a significant attention to the first words children utter. However, first words are not the actual beginning of communication. Much earlier, babies begin to communicate their feeling via making eye contact, pointing, crying, squealing, and other gestures. Furthermore, they perceive language earlier than making others understand them. The aim of this paper is to tackle the variations between the two sexes starting from the stages of language acquisition in normal children, the differences between the two genders in language vocalization within each stage. Next, the distinctions in acquiring a particular communicative competence and the causes behind this difference …

Dramatizing Modern American And Arabic Poetry A Study In Selected Poems By Kenneth Koch And Yousif Al-Sayegh, Haitham K. Eidan Al-Zubbaidi

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The interrelatedness of drama and poetry introduces one of the most exceptionally robust examples of trans-genre literature. It is further characterized by a deep-rooted tradition that dates back to ancient Greek and Roman drama, as well as a sense of circumstantial and ad hoc necessity-driven, age-oriented adaptability. The present paper assumes that this well-established sensitive relation of poetry and drama rests upon some circumstantial time-specific cultural forces or motivators that impact the ebb and flow, the expansion-contraction movements which are directly related to the temporal necessities and requirements of the textual and contextual poetic discourse. To this end, and to …

Incomplete Conjunction Of Words In The Arabic Grammar, Malika Nasirova Dec 2019

Incomplete Conjunction Of Words In The Arabic Grammar, Malika Nasirova

The Light of Islam

Annotation: One of the main issues in Arabic Linguistic is «grammatical status - إِعرَاب » (changing of the endings of words). «Changing of the endings of words» doesn’t mean changing the actual ending of the word itself (e.g.. the last letter), because the actual ending itself won’t change. What we’re changing here is the condition of the ending of words, which means that words transition from one state to another, regardless of whether that happens explicitly or implicitly. The great linguists of the Middle Ages Sibawaykhi, Makhmud az-Zamakhshariy, Abul Fatkh Mutarriziy, modern linguists Abbas Khasan, Mustapha Galayiniy, Russian scientists V.Girgas, …

On Significance Of Science Of Balāǧat In Achieving Linguisticaesthetic Perfection, Salima Rustamiy

The Light of Islam

By the beginning of the 20 century the European scientists have begun to perceive the poetic ideas put forward in medieval Arabic language and literature including the science of balāǧat as a specific type of artistic expression. As a result, the Arabic poetic thinking and science of balāǧat in the medieval Muslim world began to be called canons.

Scientists agree that canons in literature are the product of certain type of social consciousness and caused by many objective factors. In the theory of medieval Arabic literature, development of poetic views on correlation between form and meaning was complicated. It is …

Practice-Based Coaching And Early Childhood Professional Standards In A Diverse Field, Julie Betthauser Dec 2019

Practice-Based Coaching And Early Childhood Professional Standards In A Diverse Field, Julie Betthauser

Graduate Teacher Education

Abstract

The field of early childhood education has long relied on professional development strategies to support teachers with varying degrees of education who enter the field from a variety of disciplines. Research indicated educators needed intensive and individualized professional development efforts that were integrated into daily practice (Rodgers, Kennedy, VanUitert, & Myers, 2019). Practice-based coaching has been used as a professional development strategy in early childhood classrooms to develop educators’ knowledge and skills in best practices for young children. Thirty-two empirical studies conducted since 2011 on the process, effectiveness, and assessment of practice-based coaching were reviewed to identify coaching components, …

Another Shot At Rectifying The District Of Columbia V. Heller Ambiguities: The Constitutional Right To Arms, The Nonconstitutional Right To Arms, And The Commerce Clause, Noah Gaarder-Feingold

San Diego Law Review

In an article for The New Yorker titled Active Shooter, David Sedaris quipped that, in preparing for the potential that a psychopath might break into his home, he would just as soon have a back door as a gun. Sedaris wrote the article after visiting a shooting range in North Carolina. Before, during, and after the writing of the article, Sedaris lived in the United Kingdom and noted that in the United Kingdom, it is nearly impossible to acquire a handgun let alone fire a handgun for sport.

Conversely, in the United States, a citizen has a right to a …

An Inclusive Economic Paradigm Shift, Jonathan Talbot Dec 2019

An Inclusive Economic Paradigm Shift, Jonathan Talbot

Capstone Collection

In this paper, the author begins with the question of how we can recognize whether or not we are in an opportune time to re-evaluate our current economic system. Through a literature review the canvas is set for the surveys of 63 people from across the United States about the way they feel about the economic system within which we currently find ourselves. Through the survey, he establishes that people who report having had a harder time during the “economic recovery” of the Great Recession were more likely to act in the hopes of bettering their community than those who …

Interpreting The Speech Of A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Discourse Analysis: A Qualitative Study Of An Asd Idiolect, Eleni Riris Dec 2019

Interpreting The Speech Of A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Discourse Analysis: A Qualitative Study Of An Asd Idiolect, Eleni Riris

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This study uses a one-subject, in-depth analysis model to investigate how a 13-year-old child with autism communicates, using the analytical lens of discourse analysis. Using data from five 20-40 minute-long recordings of natural speech, the research subject's use of language in unique or unexpected ways came to be understood as a systematic, consistent, and rich idiolect. These findings challenge pervasive prejudices about individuals with autism and indicate that the most interesting aspects of autistic speech are overlooked by neurotypical listeners. They also demonstrate the importance of discourse analysis as a method for studying autism and language.

Multiliteracies In Rural Schools: The “Revuelto Y Mezclada” Of Home And Community Literacy Practices Of Midwestern Emergent Bilingual Families, Trish Morita-Mullaney, Haiyan Li, Jennifer Renn Dec 2019

Multiliteracies In Rural Schools: The “Revuelto Y Mezclada” Of Home And Community Literacy Practices Of Midwestern Emergent Bilingual Families, Trish Morita-Mullaney, Haiyan Li, Jennifer Renn

The Rural Educator

Multiliteracies is a paradigm for language and literacy, in which all languages and literacies are valuable, meaningful, and serve a purpose in meeting the needs of the learner within their social contexts. Multiliteracies are enacted and negotiated through different languages, technologies, and modalities and are represented in homes and communities of English Learners (ELs) or emergent bilinguals (EBs), representing their bi- or multilingual identities. Within rural communities, these family multiliteracies differ from the predominantly English-monolingual contexts found within schools, but have the potential to reshape rural educators’ conceptions of literacies. Redefining literacy holds significance in rural communities where resources, including …

Using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and multicultural education as the theoretical framework, the researcher analyzed the perceptions of effective practices from twelve college-educated professionals who were …

“Plough Up Some Literary”: Signifying On “Ole Massa” And White Authority Through Oral Space In Zora Neale Hurston’S Mules And Men And Eudora Welty’S “Powerhouse”, James Vaughan Dec 2019

“Plough Up Some Literary”: Signifying On “Ole Massa” And White Authority Through Oral Space In Zora Neale Hurston’S Mules And Men And Eudora Welty’S “Powerhouse”, James Vaughan

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This essay compares representative methods of black storytelling and signifying that overcome white authority in Hurston’s Mules and Men and Welty’s “Powerhouse.” Though many critics disagree with Mules and Men’s ambivalent structural frame, this essay defends Hurston’s subversive use of anthropological features and humanization of the storytellers as an act of authority over the white-dominated genre of anthropology she portrays. Likewise, the “Ole Massa” tales the workmen tell in Mules and Men signify on or subvert the legacy of slavery by depicting the slave-owner as a man easily and consistently fooled by John the slave. In using oral space, the …

Rural Multilingual Family Engagement, Maria Coady Dec 2019

Rural Multilingual Family Engagement, Maria Coady

The Rural Educator

Rural teachers and educators are increasingly called upon to build partnerships with families who use languages other than English in the home (US DOE, 2016). This is equally true for rural schools, where the number of multilingual families is small, and the language and cultural backgrounds of students differs from those of school. This article reviews the research on parental involvement and three common models of parental involvement. In this article, I propose a revised conceptual model for teachers and educators for rural multilingual family engagement. This article calls for increasingly refined research that addresses the sociohistorical backgrounds of families …

How Does Access To Healthcare Affect Life Expectancy?, Yara Mahmoud

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Access to health care is a pressing issue in the United States, whether it be the cost of care or not having enough of it. To emphasize the importance of this topic, this paper assesses the impact of access to health services on life expectancy. A comparison is made between the universal health systems in France and Spain and the mixed system in the United States. Even though the United States spends the most on health care in the world, its statistics fall below those of other developed countries. After addressing other risk factors, it was found that individuals under …

Disaggregated Hispanic Groups And Cancer: Importance, Methodology, And Current Knowledge, Paulo S. Pinheiro, Karen E. Callahan, Erin N. Kobetz

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Cancer is the leading cause of death among Latinos/Hispanics, the largest racial/ethnic minority group in the United States. Their cancer burden has nearly doubled in 15 years, with 129,000 new cancer cases nationwide in 2014. As this relatively young Hispanic population ages, this burden will inevitably increase; thus, accurate characterization of the Hispanic cancer experience is critical. In this chapter, we summarize the current knowledge on cancer in Hispanics, with a focus on the imperative of disaggregating by specific Hispanic group (Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Central Americans, South Americans, and Dominicans) and nativity. We also describe for the first time …

Google Has A Labor Problem, And It’S Not Just Coming From Its Employees, Daniel Whateley

Capstones

For decades, technology companies have used temporary and contract workers to lower costs, creating a shadow workforce of thousands of indirect employees. That business model is now under threat.

These contractors are employees of HCL Technologies, an Indian multinational IT and consulting company that partners with Google around the world.

Tech and office workers face a different set of workplace issues from blue-collar and factory employees, which …
