Black Lives Matter? Reporting Styles And The Public’S Acceptance Or Rejection Of Racially Charged Protest, Alexandria Haynes Aug 2019

Black Lives Matter? Reporting Styles And The Public’S Acceptance Or Rejection Of Racially Charged Protest, Alexandria Haynes

Theses - ALL

Communication and media studies scholars have commonly accepted that the news media has significant influence on the public, so the tendency to marginalize protest groups as socially deviant, can have serious implications for the cause being protested. This two-part qualitative study first examined news coverage of racially charged protests surrounding the controversial judicial ruling regarding the death of Trayvon Martin. News coverage of protests that followed the verdict was analyzed based on elements consistent with Framing theory, using a Critical Discourse Analysis methodology. The second part of the study analyzed the same news articles corresponding comment sections, in order to …

Improving The Learning Experiences Of English Language Learners In International Schools, Lana Al-Aghbar Aug 2019

Improving The Learning Experiences Of English Language Learners In International Schools, Lana Al-Aghbar

The Dissertation in Practice at Western University

This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) aims to improve the learning experiences of English Language Learners (ELLs) in international schools. It is framed around a Problem of Practice (PoP), which is based on concerns pertaining to ELLs’ English language acquisition difficulties and the limited incorporation of ELLs’ linguistic and cultural diversity. Central to this OIP is developing a desired state, which is proposed to improve ELLs’ inclusiveness. This OIP has been viewed through the lens of critical theory, relative to educational equity, and it is informed by sociocultural theory in relation to language learning within social contexts. An Internationally Minded Leadership …

Nunavut, A Creation Story. The Inuit Movement In Canada's Newest Territory, Holly Ann Dobbins Aug 2019

Nunavut, A Creation Story. The Inuit Movement In Canada's Newest Territory, Holly Ann Dobbins

Dissertations - ALL

This is a qualitative study of the 30-year land claim negotiation process (1963-1993) through which the Inuit of Nunavut transformed themselves from being a marginalized population with few recognized rights in Canada to becoming the overwhelmingly dominant voice in a territorial government, with strong rights over their own lands and waters. In this study I view this negotiation process and all of the activities that supported it as part of a larger Inuit Movement and argue that it meets the criteria for a social movement. This study bridges several social sciences disciplines, including newly emerging areas of study in social …

Examining The Classification Accuracy Of The Social, Academic, Emotional Behavior Risk Screener And Its Relationship With Writing Performance, Narmene Hamsho Aug 2019

Examining The Classification Accuracy Of The Social, Academic, Emotional Behavior Risk Screener And Its Relationship With Writing Performance, Narmene Hamsho

Dissertations - ALL

This study examined the relationship between two school-wide screening measures, one examining classroom behaviors (the Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener; SAEBRS; Kilgus, Chafouleas, & Riley-Tillman, 2013) and another evaluating writing fluency (Curriculum-Based Measurement in Written Expression; CBM-WE). This study also evaluated the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of the SAEBRS and CBM-WE for identifying students at-risk for writing achievement deficits. A convenience sample of 147 third-grade general education students across two schools, who were determined to not have any significant impairment impacting their writing performance, participated in this study. The index tests (i.e., SAEBRS, CBM-WE) …

Comparative Models In German Elections: Using The German Far-Right Party As A Proxy For Ethnic Conflict, Clay H. Parham Aug 2019

Comparative Models In German Elections: Using The German Far-Right Party As A Proxy For Ethnic Conflict, Clay H. Parham

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

In 2017, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) became the first the far-right party to win seats in the Bundestag since 1933. By campaigning on ethnic division, the AfD saw an unprecedented rise in support, especially in East Germany. This paper tests two models of ethnic conflict within comparative politics, primordialism and constructivism, to see which better explains the result of the AfD’s 2017 election. By examining the rhetorical use of political advertisements, the Manifesto Project’s analysis of the AfD’s platform, and differences of support between East and West Germany, the paper finds that constructivism better shows that highly-educated elites within …

Reviewing Failure As Part Of Reflection: A Potential Predictor Of Health Sciences Students’ Successes, Michael Cop, Hunter Hatfield Aug 2019

Reviewing Failure As Part Of Reflection: A Potential Predictor Of Health Sciences Students’ Successes, Michael Cop, Hunter Hatfield

International Journal of Health Sciences Education

Purpose: The authors examined Health Sciences students’ willingness to reflect on an academic failure at the students’ point-of-entrance into university in order to gauge how students’ willingness to engage in reflective tasks might be predictive of their subsequent academic success and, ultimately, of their potential to become health professionals.

Methods: Following Health Sciences students’ failure on an English diagnostic test, the authors determined the proportion of 568 Health Sciences students who voluntarily reviewed or did not review (SR and SNR respectively) their failed tests before sitting a second-chance test 60 days later. The authors then compared the improvements between SR …

You Belong Here: Residence Halls As Disparate Predictors Of Sophomore Year Persistence At Predominantly White Institutions, James Raymond Neville

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study is to compare the influence of residence hall living on student persistence between white and nonwhite students at predominantly white institutions. The Beginning Postsecondary Students (BPS) 2012/2014 longitudinal study dataset was acquired from the National Center for Education Statistics. A logistic regression was run to determine the predictive value of residence on student persistence by census race group. The findings of this study reveal that residence halls are not accomplishing as much for Black and Latino students as they are for White students. The results of this study challenge PWIs to take additional steps to …

Identifying Phytochemicals From Biomedical Literature Utilizing Semantic Knowledge Sources, Indra Neil Sarkar, Wayne Law, Michael J. Balick Aug 2019

Identifying Phytochemicals From Biomedical Literature Utilizing Semantic Knowledge Sources, Indra Neil Sarkar, Wayne Law, Michael J. Balick

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Chemicals derived from plants (phytochemicals) are major concepts of interest in the study of medicinal plants. To date, efforts to catalogue and organize phytochemical knowledge have resorted to manual approaches. This study explored the potential to leverage publicly accessible semantic knowledge sources for identifying possible phytochemicals. Within the context of this feasibility study, putative phytochemicals were identified for more than 4,000 plants from the Medical Subject Headings Supplementary Concept Records and the Semantic MEDLINE Database. An examination of phytochemicals identified for five selected plant species using the method developed here reveals that there is a disparity in electronically catalogued phytochemical …

Pristine Sentence Translation: A New Approach To A Timeless Problem, Meenu Ahluwalia, Brian Coari, Ben Brock Aug 2019

Pristine Sentence Translation: A New Approach To A Timeless Problem, Meenu Ahluwalia, Brian Coari, Ben Brock

SMU Data Science Review

Abstract.

Pristine Sentence Translation (PST) is a new approach to language translation based upon sentence-level granularity. Traditional translation approaches, including those utilizing advanced machine learning or neural network-based approaches, translate on a word-by-word or phrase-by-phrase basis; thereby, potentially missing the context or meaning of the complete sentence. Instead of these piecewise translations, PST utilizes deep learning and predictive modeling techniques to translate complete sentences from their source language into their target language. With these approaches we were able to translate sentences that closely conveyed the meaning of the original sentences. Our results demonstrated that PST’s method of translating an entire …

Differences In Syntactic Complexity In The Writing Of El1 And Ell Civil Engineering Students, Santiago Gustin Aug 2019

Differences In Syntactic Complexity In The Writing Of El1 And Ell Civil Engineering Students, Santiago Gustin

Dissertations and Theses

Traditional studies in syntactic complexity consider increased clausal complexity to be characteristic of development, proficiency and growth in written language production. However, this stereotypical view ignores two important facts. First, complexity differs by register (i.e. daily speech versus formal writing). Second, as the proficiency of writers increases, their complexity in formal writing changes from clausal complexity to phrasal complexity (i.e. lower-proficiency writers have more subordinate clauses whereas higher-proficiency writers tend to have more noun phrases). Therefore, in this study, I argue for the need to consider not just clausal complexity but also phrasal complexity measures when assessing development and performance …

The Impact Of Advertising Social Justice Issues On Consumer's Brand Perception, Isabelle Suarez Aug 2019

The Impact Of Advertising Social Justice Issues On Consumer's Brand Perception, Isabelle Suarez

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Recently, prominent brands have made headlines due to advertisements that take a stand on social justice issues, such as race and gender. These advertisements often spark dialogue as well as mixed reactions among the brand's consumers. This research project explores how these advertisements have affected the consumer's perception of the brand. Companies have an extremely valuable and influential platform with the ability to quickly reach a great number of individuals. Advertisements about social justice issues often stimulate broader conversations regarding the issues at hand and draw more attention to the topics addressed in the advertisement. In addition to a literature …

Exploring Critical Events In An Inaugural Arts-Based Research Class Through Ethnographic Mapping And Poetry-Enriched Narrative Sketches, Janet Richards, Steve Haberlin Aug 2019

Exploring Critical Events In An Inaugural Arts-Based Research Class Through Ethnographic Mapping And Poetry-Enriched Narrative Sketches, Janet Richards, Steve Haberlin

The Qualitative Report

Arts-based research (ABR) employs the arts to explore the “experiences of researchers and the people they involve in their studies” (McNiff, 2008, p. 29). Acknowledgement of ABRs’ potential for enhancing social science inquiry has gained momentum along with the development of new ABR methods courses. However, there is a lack of published studies that investigate what goes on in ABR classes (Cahnmann-Taylor & Siegesmund, 2008; Leavy, 2015; Personal communication, The Qualitative Report 2018 Conference). In this inquiry we (Janet, course designer and instructor, and Steve, student and class assistant), employed ethnographic techniques to explore unexpected critical events that occurred in …

Exploring Preparation Of Pre-Service Teachers’ English Proficiency And Pedagogy: Stories From An Efl Teacher Education Program, Abdul Hadi

The Qualitative Report

Many English teachers today are non-native speakers of English graduating from Pre-service English Teacher Education (PETE) programs in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. They undertake their teaching career in a strategic but challenging linguistic and educational situation. This paper reports findings from such a situation based on a qualitative case study of a PETE program at an Indonesian university that aimed to explore the nature of curriculum provision in preparation to develop pre-service teachers’ English proficiency and pedagogy. Data were collected from pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and program administrator using interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations. Results of …

Conversations Between Preservice Teachers And Latina Mothers: An Avenue To Transformative Mathematics Teaching, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr, Marta Civil Aug 2019

Conversations Between Preservice Teachers And Latina Mothers: An Avenue To Transformative Mathematics Teaching, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr, Marta Civil

Teacher Education

Mathematics education researchers agree that students’ mathematical learning can be positively impacted by making connections to their out of school experiences through a funds of knowledge lens. This is especially important for diverse students whose experiences are often underrepresented in school curricula. Making these connections can be challenging for teachers whose experiences often differ from their students. We examine how conversations between preservice teachers and Latina mothers influenced the teachers’ creation of a mathematics lesson that connected to students’ out of school experiences. Findings suggest the importance of offering preservice teachers opportunities to learn from parents about their children’s out …

Tomo Ni Manabu: Task-Based Language Teaching In A High School English Class In Japan, Yoshie Holland

Linguistics

Task-based language teaching is a method that emerged in the field of second language acquisition in the U.S. Task-based language teaching facilitates language learning in context. However, there are few examples of research that investigate the applicability of task-based language teaching in classrooms in Japan where constraints such as big class size, college entrance exams, and designated textbooks that follow the national curriculum guidelines are factors. This study investigates the response of a Japanese teacher and 41 high school students in Japan, the students' language development as well as the suitability of task-based language teaching in classrooms in Japan. It …

Alaska Native Corporations, The Long Run, Robert G. Snigaroff Aug 2019

Alaska Native Corporations, The Long Run, Robert G. Snigaroff

Economics

Alaska Native Corporations as formed by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) have existed for almost fifty years. As with all businesses, their results are mixed. Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) are unique. After a brief overview of ANCs' results, I study several issues that pertain to them in a manuscript format with several chapters. Business stability and longevity are crucial for ANCs, and I discuss that, given a common mission of ANCs for cultural continuation. While most of the following is a positive analysis, I also make a normative strategy argument: ANCs should make larger portions of their economic …

Users’ Continued Usage Of Online Healthcare Virtual Communities: An Empirical Investigation In The Context Of Hiv Support Communities, Ruochen Liao, Rajiv Kishore, Michael J. Lee

Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research

This study uses data from an online HIV/AIDS health support virtual community to examine whether users’ emotional states and the social support they receive influence their continued usage. We adopt grief theory to conceptualize the negative emotions that people living with HIV/AIDS could experience. Linguistic analysis is used to measure the emotional states of the users and the informational and emotional support that they receive. Results show that users showing a higher level of disbelief and yearning are more likely to leave the community while those with a high level of anger and depression are more likely to stay on. …

Postwar Reconciliation: Parental Attitudes Towards Sri Lanka's Trilingual Education Policy, Nimasha S. Malalasekera Aug 2019

Postwar Reconciliation: Parental Attitudes Towards Sri Lanka's Trilingual Education Policy, Nimasha S. Malalasekera

Linguistics

After 26 years, the ethnic-based civil war in Sri Lanka ended in 2009. The Trilingual Education Policy seeks to reconcile the estranged Sinhalese and Tamil communities by teaching each community the other's language in this postwar context. Scholars argue that national reconciliation through Trilingual Education is unlikely to succeed because of the continued mistrust and prejudice between the two communities and the demand for English as key to social mobility and economic prosperity. Since these claims are not supported by empirical evidence, this study seeks to find empirical data to support or counter these claims. The study investigates parental attitudes …
