Understanding Equitable Assessment: How Preservice Teachers Make Meaning Of Disability, Melissa K. Driver Sep 2019

Understanding Equitable Assessment: How Preservice Teachers Make Meaning Of Disability, Melissa K. Driver

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Disproportionality of historically marginalized populations in special education continues to be a critical concern. The identification of students with disabilities is reliant on valid and reliable assessment that is free of bias. The extent to which this is possible given measurement constraints and an increasingly diverse student population is unclear. How teachers are trained to design, select, administer, score, and interpret assessment data related to the identification of students with disabilities is vastly under-researched considering the significant implications of assessment practices. In this study, six special education preservice teachers engaged in an assessment methods course during their second semester of …

White Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions And Their Development Of Culturally Relevant Literacy Practices, Lakia M. Scott, Elena Venegas Sep 2019

White Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions And Their Development Of Culturally Relevant Literacy Practices, Lakia M. Scott, Elena Venegas

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Existent literature purports that providing White teacher candidates with increased exposure to urban schools in order to create culturally competent educators has failed. These findings reflect the notion that teacher ideologies and overall perspectives about working with diverse student groups must be harnessed in a genuine ethic of care and intentionality for students of color. However, few studies have taken the approach of examining the development of culturally relevant pedagogy through context-specific field experiences using content-specific courses. This study examines the perspectives of twenty-five White pre-service teachers from a predominately White, private university regarding their initial perceptions and gained conceptual …

Queer Phenomenology In Law: A Critical Theory Of Orientation, Nick J. Sciullo Sep 2019

Queer Phenomenology In Law: A Critical Theory Of Orientation, Nick J. Sciullo

Pace Law Review

This Article argues for the application of phenomenology to legal understanding, specifically as a way to think about and through queer people’s interactions with law as well as queer theory in law. There are both pragmatic and theoretical justifications for this project. The pragmatic justifications include the need to better address the legal issues and experiences of queer people, recent political and legal decisions and debates that affect queer people specifically, the need to better provide epistemological resources for queer lawyers, law scholars, law students, and their allies, and the need to better understand how law affects minoritarian populations regardless …

Promoting Aboriginal Student Engagement And Success In Tertiary Education In Remote Locations, Sandra Wooltorton, Anna Dwyer, Judith Wilks, John Guenther

Talking Heads Seminar Series

Research was conducted with 40 students and staff who live, work and study in tertiary education in remote locations in the West Kimberley region. Using interviews and focus groups, the project addressed three overarching questions: How do remote Aboriginal students experience studying at or via a university campus? What are the key enablers and constraints to West Kimberley students’ successful participation and engagement with tertiary education? What strategies might assist Aboriginal students living and studying in communities and towns in remote locations, to transition successfully through VET, into tertiary and/or through post graduate education?

Empowerment, Resistance And The Birth Control Pill: A Feminist Analysis Of Contraception In The Developing World, Abigail S. Trombley Sep 2019

Empowerment, Resistance And The Birth Control Pill: A Feminist Analysis Of Contraception In The Developing World, Abigail S. Trombley

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

The vast majority of literature on the use of contraception focuses on its frequently documented connection to socioeconomic development. Thus, contraception has become a favored programmatic element of western organizations that deliver it to women in the developing world. I analyze discourse from transnational organizations that advocate for women’s use of birth control in the developing world, as well as deliver contraceptive services themselves, in order to uncover the dominance of liberal, capitalist assumptions therein. A primary consequence of this discourse is the reconstruction of colonial relations between the global north and global south. My alternative analysis, informed by a …

Token Representation?: Impact Of Female Reservations In Panchayati Raj Institutions In Elections To State And National Legislatures, Surbhi Bharadwaj Sep 2019

Token Representation?: Impact Of Female Reservations In Panchayati Raj Institutions In Elections To State And National Legislatures, Surbhi Bharadwaj

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

Reservations have long formed a fundamental tenet of affirmative action in India. Quotas for representation of various disadvantaged groups proliferate across public educational institutions and government jobs. However, elections to public office have largely escaped such quotas, except those that are caste-based. A shift in this status quo occurred in 1992 with the establishment of the Panchayati Raj system of grassroots governance. 34% of all seats under Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) were to be reserved for women under the 73rd amendment. Another constitutional amendment passed in September 2009 increased PRI quotas for women to 50%. This paper seeks to examine …

Playing The Race Card: Did Racism Cause Anti-Immigrant Sentiment In Brexit?, Lucy Hu Sep 2019

Playing The Race Card: Did Racism Cause Anti-Immigrant Sentiment In Brexit?, Lucy Hu

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

Following the 2016 referendum on continued UK membership of the European Union, many attempts were made to explain its result. There has been consensus that the issue of immigration played a primary role in the Leave campaign and Brexiteers’ minds. The reasons for this anti-immigrant sentiment have been explored, with economic and cultural concerns at the fore of the literature. Critically, currently missing from the debate is whether racism played a substantial role in causing anti-immigrant sentiment in the context of Brexit. This article uses new public opinion data from 2018 to investigate the extent to which racism motivated the …

Une Rencontre Manquée : Confrontation, Défiance Et Stéréotypes Entre Suds Dans Milano, Fin Qui Tutto Bene De Gabriella Kuruvilla, Nicola Brarda

Artl@s Bulletin

Tony, a Milanese youngster of Neapolitan descent, encounters an Egyptian migrant, Samir, in a bar. Tony is drunk and Samir steals his mobile phone. This episode is narrated briefly in two chapters of Gabriella Kuruvilla’s novel Milano, fin qui tutto bene. We will try to analyze, within this misunderstanding, the ways in which the novel questions the apparent homogeneity of the notion of South, by staging the collision between two distinct Souths within the city : the South embodied by former generations of migrants originating from the Mezzogiorno, as opposed to new migrants coming from the global South.

Infidelity As Reality: Re-Staging The Global South With Abbas Kiarostami’S Close-Up, Sinan Richards Sep 2019

Infidelity As Reality: Re-Staging The Global South With Abbas Kiarostami’S Close-Up, Sinan Richards

Artl@s Bulletin

In this article, we contend that, in the fields of art and visual culture, the Global South is both an elaborate lie and a radical opportunity for transformation. We investigate Kiarostami’s Close-up alongside Lacan’s psychoanalysis to show how Close-up’s filmic narrative evokes the same ‘polyvalence’ and ‘slipperiness’ as the notion of the Global South. We argue that Kiarostami’s Close-up retroactively changed Sabzian’s fate, and in so doing, Kiarostami’s re-staging actively overwrites History itself. We read the same narrative move in the concept of the Global South to suggest that the Global South adopts the Kiarostamian strategy of infidelity as reality …

Ritualisation Du Langage Et Métaphores Naturelles : Paradigmes Ou Écueils Pour Construire Un Discours Propre Au Sud ?, Cécile Chapon

Artl@s Bulletin

The Venue Shuffle: Forum Selection Clauses & Erisa, Christine P. Bartholomew, James A. Wooten

Journal Articles

Forum selection clauses are ubiquitous. Historically, the judiciary was hostile to contracts limiting a plaintiff’s venue options. The tide has since turned. Today, lower courts routinely enforce such clauses. This Article challenges this reflexive response in the special context of ERISA cases. It mines ERISA’s statutory text, rich legislative history, and historical context to supply an in-depth exploration of ERISA’s unique policy goal of providing employees “ready access to the Federal courts.” The Article then explains how forum selection clauses undermine this goal and thus should be invalid under controlling Supreme Court jurisprudence.

Memory Influences Visual Cognition Across Multiple Functional States Of Interactive Cortical Dynamics, H Schendan Sep 2019

Memory Influences Visual Cognition Across Multiple Functional States Of Interactive Cortical Dynamics, H Schendan

School of Psychology

Memory supports a wide range of abilities from categorical perception to goal-directed behavior, such as decision-making and episodic recognition. Memory activates fast and surprisingly accurately and even when information is ambiguous or impoverished (i.e., showing object constancy). This paper proposes the multiple-state interactive (MUSI) account of object cognition that attempts to explain how sensory stimulation activates memory across multiple functional states of neural dynamics, including automatic and strategic mental simulation mechanisms that can ground cognition in modal information processing. A key novel postulate of this account is ‘multiple-function regional activity’: The same neuronal population can contribute to multiple brain states, …

Parent Supervision Attributes Profile Questionnaire (Psapq) For Young Children: Psychometric Properties Of The Chinese Version, Jun Yang, Shih-Yu Lee, Yuqiu Zhou, Yuxia Cui, Yongkui Han, Hongling Song, Hui Zhang

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: In China, thousands of children die from unintentional injury each year: the incidence rate of injury is from 19.4 to 64.3% which is the leading cause of mortality for children. An important factor to injury may be inadequate supervision. Thus, a linguistic and culturally appropriated, validated instrument to measure the supervision of children in Chinese primary caregiver is important and necessary. The purpose of this study was to translate and test the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Parent Supervision Attributes Profile Questionnaire (C-PSAPQ). Methods: This is a two-phase study. In phase I, the C-PSAPQ was produced …

Bigger Versus Similar: Selecting A Background Corpus For First Story Detection Based On Distributional Similarity, Fei Wang, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

The current state of the art for First Story Detection (FSD) are nearest neighbour-based models with traditional term vector representations; however, one challenge faced by FSD models is that the document representation is usually defined by the vocabulary and term frequency from a background corpus. Consequently, the ideal background corpus should arguably be both large-scale to ensure adequate term coverage, and similar to the target domain in terms of the language distribution. However, given these two factors cannot always be mutually satisfied, in this paper we examine whether the distributional similarity of common terms is more important than the scale …

Co-Extraction Of Feature Sentiment And Context Terms For Context-Sensitive Feature-Based Sentiment Classification Using Attentive-Lstm, S. K .Lavanya, B. Parvathavarthini

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the field of business intelligence, the context in which customers see, hear and think about a product plays an important role in their call of buying the product. Context-sensitive sentiment classification methods determine the polarity of the sentiment terms by considering the contexts of the target word. Most of the present techniques consider only product-level, user-level contexts for sentiment classification. These contexts are more general and depend on additional features to achieve good performance. Feature-level contexts e.g., car’s features include mileage and its context comprises city, highway, short-trips, long-trips and hill station providing fine-grained information needed for sentiment classification. …

In the industry area, systems are able to diagnose faults that have been widely studied. The electric motors present fundamental role in industry, since much of the production process depends on its good working. Therefore, avoiding unscheduled stoppage and faults is important in the production process. This paper presents supervised learning approaches to classify three-phase induction motors faults, applying Decision Trees and Random Forest algorithms. The great advantage of using intelligent systems in the motor faults classification is the fact that data collection can be done without interrupting the production process. The input to the proposed …

“Opening The Window To A World Wider Than Our Little Classroom”: The Importance Of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Hannah Carter, Melissa Bradford Sep 2019

“Opening The Window To A World Wider Than Our Little Classroom”: The Importance Of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Hannah Carter, Melissa Bradford

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Diversity in today’s classrooms must be considered and valued to create effective learning environments. Through surveys (N=83) and interviews (N=10), this mixed methods study examined in-service elementary teachers’ beliefs about culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) – more specifically, self-efficacy and outcome expectancy, as related to CRP. Results showed that teachers not only have highly positive outcome expectations for CRP quantitatively, they also explain specific benefits of CRP – relationship building, student achievement, and learning beyond the curriculum. Teachers were efficacious implementing CRP related to general good teaching practices, such as developing relationships and building trust with students. However, they were less …

Erotic Mindfulness: A Core Educational And Therapeutic Strategy In Somatic Sexology Practices, Marie I. Thouin-Savard Sep 2019

Erotic Mindfulness: A Core Educational And Therapeutic Strategy In Somatic Sexology Practices, Marie I. Thouin-Savard

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Somatic sexology modalities such as sexual surrogacy, sexological bodywork, masturbation coaching, and orgasmic meditation have shown significant potential for helping individuals transcend sexual difficulties and grow into more fulfilling erotic lives. The use of an embodied state of consciousness similar to neo-traditional forms of mindfulness meditation may be a common factor contributing to therapeutic efficacy in a variety of somatic sexology methods. Comparing the structure of three somatic sexology modalities—sexual surrogacy, masturbation coaching, and orgasmic meditation—with recent evidence supporting the efficacy of neo-traditional mindfulness practices in promoting women’s sexual wellbeing reveals that somatic sexology practitioners use embodied mindfulness as a …
