JADARA

Thirteen supervisors of educational programs for hearing-impaired students completed an assessment designed to determine the need for educational interpreters in a midwestern state and how well it was being met. The results suggested that the trend toward the integration of hearing-impaired students in to regular programs continues and that, with the higher incidence of integration, there is an associated unmet need for educational interpreters. Nine supervisors, 24 teachers, 27 interpreters and 18 hearing-impaired college students rated the characteristics and skills of interpreters which they perceived to be most important. Gender Differences On The Wais-R Performance Scale With Young Deaf Adults, Allan Ensor, Leadelle Phelps

JADARA

The WAIS-R Performance Scale was administered to185 hearing-impaired young adults (80 females and 105 males) having a mean age of 18.6 years (SD .97). All participants were considered to have a prelingual hearing loss that ranged from moderate to profound. The five sub-tests and performance IQ (PIQ) were evaluated by t-test computations and principal factor analyses. The only significant mean score difference occurred with the Digit Symbol subtest where the female subjects outperformed their male counter parts by a mean difference of 1.76 points (t=-4.76, p < .0001). Subtest inter-correlational results suggest that adult deaf males demonstrated better spatial analysis and synthesis skills while the females performed better at visual-motor coordination and speed tasks. A principal factor analysis procedure yielded only one factor for each sex. The high degree of factorial similarity between the male and female samples indicated that the underlying construct being measured by the WAIS-R Performance subtests does not differ by gender.

Architectural Rhetoric In Shakespeare And Spenser, Jennifer C. Vaught Sep 2019

Architectural Rhetoric In Shakespeare And Spenser, Jennifer C. Vaught

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

Jennifer C. Vaught illustrates how architectural rhetoric in Shakespeare and Spenser provides a bridge between the human body and mind and the nonhuman world of stone and timber. The recurring figure of the body as a besieged castle in Shakespeare’s drama and Spenser’s allegory reveals that their works are mutually based on medieval architectural allegories exemplified by the morality play The Castle of Perseverance. Intertextual and analogous connections between the generically hybrid works of Shakespeare and Spenser demonstrate how they conceived of individuals not in isolation from the physical environment but in profound relation to it. This book approaches …

Polemic And Literature Surrounding The French Wars Of Religion, Jeff Kendrick, Katherine S. Maynard Sep 2019

Polemic And Literature Surrounding The French Wars Of Religion, Jeff Kendrick, Katherine S. Maynard

Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

Polemic and Literature Surrounding the French Wars of Religion demonstrates that literature and polemic interacted constantly in sixteenth-century France, constructing ideological frameworks that defined the various groups to which individuals belonged and through which they defined their identities. Contributions explore both literary texts and more intentionally polemical texts that fall outside of the traditional literary genres. Engaging the continuous casting and recasting of opposing worldviews, this collection of essays examines literature's use of polemic and polemic's use of literature as seminal intellectual developments stemming from the religious and social turmoil that characterized this period in France.

First-Time Juvenile Arrestees' Odd Symptoms: The Role Of Parent-School Interaction And Race, Ari Romano-Verthelyi

Master's Theses

Objective.Disruptive behaviors are bidirectionally associated with low-quality parent-school interactions (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1995). However, Non-White children are more likely to be identified by teachers as behaviorally disruptive (Epstein et al., 2005), more likely to have low-quality parent-school interactions (Serpell & Mashburn, 2012), and more likely to be engaged in the justice system (Hockenberry & Puzzanchera, 2013).Considering that non-White parents may interact with schools and teachers differently than White parents (Mariñez-Lona & Quintana, 2009), it is unclear to what extent race might influence the predictive relationship between aspects of parent-school interactions and disruptive behavior problems.
