Poverty, Demographics, And Hepatitis C Infection In The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, Wilson J. Washington Jr Jan 2019

Poverty, Demographics, And Hepatitis C Infection In The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, Wilson J. Washington Jr

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hepatitis (HCV) is a communicable disease that impacts many Americans. The scholarly literature lacked the knowledge pertaining to the relationships between poverty and HCV diagnosis and prescription for HCV medication. The purpose of the study was to measure the magnitude and statistical significance of these relationships, as modeled by the health belief model and public health surveillance and action framework. Specifically, the study was designed to determine whether there is a statistically significant relationship between living below the poverty line and being diagnosed with HCV, as well as living being below the poverty line and being prescribed HCV medication. A …

Predictive Relationship Between Socio-Demographics, Medication, And Treatment Completion Among Persons Experiencing Homelessness Treated For Tuberculosis, Sophia Ajoku Jan 2019

Predictive Relationship Between Socio-Demographics, Medication, And Treatment Completion Among Persons Experiencing Homelessness Treated For Tuberculosis, Sophia Ajoku

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Approximately 80% of people who contract tuberculosis (TB) in the United States are first infected with untreated latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). LTBI is an ongoing public health concern in people who experience homelessness. Because of the transient nature of this population, it is often difficult for them to adhere to and complete treatment for LTBI. In this quantitative, correlational of a cross-sectional study, secondary data was from a public health clinic in southern U.S. The theoretical framework used for the study was the social ecological framework. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine if a statistically significant predictive relationship existed …

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Plasmodium falciparum histone deacetylases (PfHDACs) are an important class of epigenetic regulators that alter protein lysine acetylation, contributing to regulation of gene expression and normal parasite growth and development. PfHDACs are therefore under investigation as drug targets for malaria. Despite this, our understanding of the biological roles of these enzymes is only just beginning to emerge. In higher eukaryotes, HDACs function as part of multi-protein complexes and act on both histone and non-histone substrates. Here, we present a proteomics analysis of PfHDAC1 immunoprecipitates, identifying 26 putative P. falciparum complex proteins in trophozoite-stage asexual intraerythrocytic parasites. The …

The Costs Of Climate Disruption In The Trade-Offs Of Community Resilience, Keith H. Hirokawa, David Dickinson Jan 2019

The Costs Of Climate Disruption In The Trade-Offs Of Community Resilience, Keith H. Hirokawa, David Dickinson

Western New England Law Review

Wetlands perform certain functions, including water filtration and the provision of wildlife habitats, from which humans benefit in the form of drinkable water and biodiversity. Trees produce oxygen, capture air and water pollutants, and provide shade, which help humans breathe, manage storm waters, and find a comfortable place to relax on a hot day. These are services that are provided by functioning ecosystems and are measured through the ecological economics of ecosystem services. The study of ecosystem services has provided an important insight: for the most part, those very services are ignored or undervalued. Although humans derive enormous benefits from …

White-Nose Syndrome And Immune Responses In A Resistant Bat Species (Eptesicus Fuscus), Keslie Skye Naffa Jan 2019

White-Nose Syndrome And Immune Responses In A Resistant Bat Species (Eptesicus Fuscus), Keslie Skye Naffa

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

White-nose syndrome (WNS) has had a large negative impact on bat populations across eastern North America since its arrival in 2006. Bats affected by WNS appear to die of starvation, possibly due to the increased arousals during hibernation when there is no food present to replace the energy used to arouse. During hibernation, the bat’s immune system should be suppressed. However, once a bat of a susceptible species is exposed to the fungus that causes WNS, Psuedogymnoascus destructans (Pd), the immune system seems to respond, potentially causing an elevation in metabolic rate, which may cause the bat to …

A Safe Harbor In The Opioid Crisis: How The Federal Government Should Allow States To Legislate For Safe Injection Facilities In Light Of The Opioid Public Health Emergency, Amber A. Leary Jan 2019

A Safe Harbor In The Opioid Crisis: How The Federal Government Should Allow States To Legislate For Safe Injection Facilities In Light Of The Opioid Public Health Emergency, Amber A. Leary

Brooklyn Law Review

Opioid addiction is wreaking havoc across the United States, leading to a shocking number of overdoses and deaths. This epidemic has prompted the Trump Administration to declare opioid abuse a public health emergency and to call for increases in evidence-based treatment for those addicted to harmful opioids. To combat this epidemic, some cities have embraced one such evidence-based treatment plan—safe injection facilities—which are infirmaries where drug users can inject pre-obtained drugs under the supervision of nurses or overdose reversal specialists who can respond in real time to prevent overdose and death. Though safe injection facilities outside the United States have …

Law In The Time Of Zika: Disability Rights And Reproductive Justice Collide, Seema Mohapatra Jan 2019

Law In The Time Of Zika: Disability Rights And Reproductive Justice Collide, Seema Mohapatra

Brooklyn Law Review

This article focuses on finding common ground between those seeking to ensure abortion access and those advocating for disability rights, using the reaction to the Zika virus as a case study. Although the symptoms of Zika in women were often mild, the correlation of Zika infection in pregnant women to microcephaly affecting their newborns led to travel advisories and alarm bells for pregnant women in areas where the Zika virus was prevalent. Although the rise of microcephaly and its connection to Zika was a cause for concern and investigation, the condition itself is not a death sentence, as headlines suggested. …

Heterogeneity In The Treatment Of Bloodstream Infections Identified From Antibiotic Exposure Mapping, Aisling R. Caffrey, R. Babcock, Vrishali V. Lopes, Tristan T. Timbrook, Kerry L. Laplante

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Purpose: As changes in antibiotic therapy are common, intent‐to‐treat and definitive therapy exposure definitions in infectious disease clinical trials and observational studies may not accurately reflect all antibiotics received over the course of the infection. Therefore, we sought to describe changes in antibiotic therapy and unique treatment patterns among patients with bacteremia.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of hospitalizations from Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers (January 2002‐September 2015) and community hospitals (de‐identified Optum Clinformatics DataMart with matched Premier Hospital data; October 2009‐March 2013). In the VA population, antibiotic exposures were mapped from the culture collection date among those …

Methods: Frequency and rate of antibiotic use were assessed for all UTI episodes overall and were stratified by culture-positive and culture-negative episodes. Joinpoint software was used for regression analyses of trends …

A Systemic Approach To The Development And Improvement Of Trauma Education And Training, Yoon Suh Moh Jan 2019

A Systemic Approach To The Development And Improvement Of Trauma Education And Training, Yoon Suh Moh

Counseling and Behavioral Health Faculty Papers

A number of individuals are exposed to adversity (e.g., child abuse and neglect, parental substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration) early in life (Felitti et al., 1998; Centers for Disease Control [CDC] and Prevention, 2019). Moreover, over 70% of individuals worldwide will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives (Benjet et al., 2016). Mounting research has documented that the effects of trauma exposure in childhood are not only immediate but also enduring, leading to lifelong health problems. At the same time, studies have suggested that there is a lack of systemic trauma education and training. This article will …

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

The last decade has seen a sharp increase in the number of scientific publications describing physiological and pathological functions of extracellular vesicles (EVs), a collective term covering various subtypes of cell-released, membranous structures, called exosomes, microvesicles, microparticles, ectosomes, oncosomes, apoptotic bodies, and many other names. However, specific issues arise when working with these entities, whose size and amount often make them difficult to obtain as relatively pure preparations, and to characterize properly. The International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) proposed Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles (“MISEV”) guidelines for the field in 2014. We now update these “MISEV2014” guidelines …

Development Of In Vitro Point Of Care Diagnostics (Ivpcd) Based On Aptamers Integrated Biosensors, Nileshi Saraf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The global market for the medical diagnostic industry is worth 25 billion dollars in the United States and is expected to grow exponentially each year. Presently available methods for biodetection, such as immunoassays, chemiluminescence and fluorescent based assays are expensive, time consuming and require skilled labor with high-end instruments. Therefore, development of novel, passive colorimetric sensors and diagnostic technologies for detection and surveillance is of utmost importance especially in resource constrained communities. The present work focusses on developing novel and advanced in vitro biodiagnostic tools based on aptamer integrated biosensors for an early detection of specific viral proteins or small …

Multiscale Model Of Regional Population Decline In Little Brown Bats Due To White-Nose Syndrome, Andrew M. Kramer, Claire S. Teitelbaum, Ashton Griffin, John M. Drake

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

  1. The introduced fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus destructans is causing decline of several species of bats in North America, with some even at risk of extinction or extirpation. The severity of the epidemic of white-nose syndrome caused by P. destructans has prompted investigation of the transmission and virulence of infection at multiple scales, but linking these scales is necessary to quantify the mechanisms of transmission and assess population-scale declines.
  2. We built a model connecting within-hibernaculum disease dynamics of little brown bats to regional-scale dispersal, reproduction, and disease spread, including multiple plausible mechanisms of transmission.
  3. We parameterized the model using the approach of …

Host Restriction Factors In The Replication Of Tombusviruses: From Rna Helicases To Nucleocytoplasmic Shuttling, Cheng-Yu Wu Jan 2019

Host Restriction Factors In The Replication Of Tombusviruses: From Rna Helicases To Nucleocytoplasmic Shuttling, Cheng-Yu Wu

Theses and Dissertations--Plant Pathology

Positive-stranded (+)RNA viruses replicate inside cells and depend on many cellular factors to complete their infection cycle. In the meanwhile, (+)RNA viruses face the host innate immunity, such as cell-intrinsic restriction factors that could block virus replication.

Firstly, I have established that the plant DDX17-like RH30 DEAD-box helicase conducts strong inhibitory function on tombusvirus replication when expressed in plants and yeast surrogate host. This study demonstrates that RH30 blocks the assembly of viral replicase complex, the activation of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase function of p92pol and viral RNA template recruitment.

In addition, the features rendering the abundant plant DEAD-box helicases either …

A Review On Antibiotic Stewardship In Pediatric Primary Care, Paulina Kaminski

Public Health Theses

Background. Misuse of antibiotics for upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) in pediatric primary care settings persists despite growing concern over antibiotic resistance. Interventions aimed at improving prescription use, coined Antibiotic Stewardship Programs (ASPs) often target clinicians for improved clinical decision-making. More recently, ASPs have begun educating patients to antibiotic needs, and for pediatric cases, parents who might pressure clinicians into prescribing unneeded antibiotics. While many reviews have targeted adult patients or emergency settings, few evaluate practices for pediatric populations. For this reason, we performed a review of the literature to summarize common strategies used to reduce antibiotic overprescribing for pediatric …

Section of Neurosurgery

Fungal infections of the central nervous system (CNS) are uncommon. Despite several advancements in diagnosis and treatment of these infections, the mortality rates remain high. The current retrospective study was planned to define the demographic and clinical features of patients with CNS fungal infections. Conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and comprising CNS fungal infections operated between January 2000 and December 2015. The study analysed whether a short course of pre-operative anti-fungal therapy may improve outcomes in these patients. There were 47 cases confirmed on histopathology and/or microbiology. Outcome measures used were Glasgow coma score (GCS), Glasgow outcome score …

Parasitism, Host Behavior, And Invasive Species, Sarah N. Bevins Jan 2019

Parasitism, Host Behavior, And Invasive Species, Sarah N. Bevins

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Animal behavior and parasitism are inextricable linked. In many cases, host behavior can affect what parasites are encountered. In other cases, parasites can manipulate the behavior of the host in an attempt to maximize their own transmission. These long-standing interactions are now further complicated by species movement around the globe. The list of introduced species that have become invasive includes parasites that have adapted to new hosts in areas of introduction, as well as invasive hosts that alter the association between existing parasite–host assemblages. Researchers have documented differences in rates of parasitism and in the consequences of parasite infection between …

Research on urban wildlife can help promote coexistence and guide future interactions between humans and wildlife in developed regions, but most such investigations are limited to short-term, single-species studies, typically conducted within a single city. This restricted focus prevents scientists from recognizing global patterns and first principles regarding urban wildlife behavior and ecol- ogy. To overcome these limitations, we have designed a pioneering research network, the Urban Wildlife Information Network (UWIN), whereby partners collaborate across several cities to systematically collect data to populate long-term datasets on multiple species in urban areas. Data collected via UWIN support analyses that will enable …

Binge Alcohol Drinking Exacerbates Ulcerative Colitis Flare, Abigail Cannon Jan 2019

Binge Alcohol Drinking Exacerbates Ulcerative Colitis Flare, Abigail Cannon

Dissertations

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) remains a prominent medical concern affecting over 1.4 million people in the U.S. One of the most common forms of the disease is ulcerative colitis (UC), and UC patients will often head doctor's advice to refrain from drinking alcohol. However, whether this phenomenon of alcohol exacerbating UC symptoms occurs is still unknown, which necessitated the generation of a mouse model of UC and binge alcohol. Therefore, we examined a range of DSS concentrations (2-4%) and 2 alcohol paradigms in C57BL/6 mice. Mice receiving 2% DSS ad libitum for five days with a three-day alcohol binge had …

Analyzing Counter Improvised Explosive Device Equipment For Effectiveness In Preventing Casualty, Roxanne Reinhardt

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This research explores injury patterns of casualties from combat due to Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), which can vary due to the unique circumstances related to an injury. This research hopes to understand how decisions on equipment production and safety mechanisms are employed. Some of the preliminary research includes a meta-analysis of various IED events, with a focus on conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. This research will also consider historical, current, and predictive analysis, to best understand the IED threat and to help save lives. Finally, this IED study is novel because it will approach this research from a holistic anthropological …

Glioblastoma Mimicking Viral Encephalitis Responds To Acyclovir: A Case Series And Literature Review., Keenan J Piper, Haidn Foster, Brandon Gabel, Burt Nabors, Charles Cobbs

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Viral encephalitis and glioblastoma are both relatively rare conditions with poor prognoses. While the clinical and radiographic presentations of these diseases are often distinctly different, viral encephalitis can sometimes masquerade as glioblastoma. Rarely, glioblastoma can also be misdiagnosed as viral encephalitis. In some cases where a high-grade glioma was initially diagnosed as viral encephalitis, antiviral administration has proven effective for relieving early symptoms. We present three cases in which patients presented with symptoms and radiographic findings suggestive of viral encephalitis and experienced dramatic clinical improvement following treatment with acyclovir, only to later be diagnosed with glioblastoma in the region of …

Warming Oceans, Coastal Diseases, And Climate Change Public Health Adaptation, Robin Kundis Craig Jan 2019

Warming Oceans, Coastal Diseases, And Climate Change Public Health Adaptation, Robin Kundis Craig

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Climate change is changing the world’s ocean in three important ways. First, the ocean is warming. Second, sea levels are rising. Finally, ice is melting. All of these changes have important implications for human disease risk, ranging from a fairly prosaic increase in harmful algal blooms to the science-fictionish re-release of deadly microbes from long ago.

In the United States, coastal adaptation efforts to date have been sluggish. Many uncertainties attend climate change’s effects on the ocean, particularly with regard to sea-level rise and ice melting. In addition, the time scales involved are generally long, outside of the planning ken …
