James Petiver’S ‘Kind Friends’ And ‘Curious Persons’ In The Atlantic World: Commerce, Colonialism And Collecting, Kate S. Murphy Oct 2019

James Petiver’S ‘Kind Friends’ And ‘Curious Persons’ In The Atlantic World: Commerce, Colonialism And Collecting, Kate S. Murphy

History

In 1695, James Petiver concluded the first ‘century’ of his Musei Petiveriani by observing that he had received the specimens described within it from his ‘Kind Friends from divers parts of the World’ and ‘Curious Persons…Abroad’. This essay examines Petiver’s network of such ‘Kind Friends’ and ‘Curious Persons’ in the Atlantic World. The composition of Petiver’s network reflected many of the broader patterns of English commerce in the Atlantic at the turn of the eighteenth century. Moreover, England’s growing overseas empire and its expanding commercial activity required a parallel expansion in maritime labour. Mariners were correspondingly central to Petiver’s work …

The Nineteenth Century Apostolic Christian Church: The Dynamics Of The Emergence, Establishment, And Fragmentation Of A Neo-Anabaptist Sect, Joseph Pfeiffer Oct 2019

The Nineteenth Century Apostolic Christian Church: The Dynamics Of The Emergence, Establishment, And Fragmentation Of A Neo-Anabaptist Sect, Joseph Pfeiffer

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

This article traces the emergence, proliferation, and identity formation of a 19th century Neo-Anabaptist sect known variously as Neutäufer (New Anabaptists), Nazarenes, and Apostolic Christian Church. The Neutäufer emerged during an era that was a turning point in world religious history, marked by a renewed sense of missionary vigor and the proliferation of major voluntary (as opposed to state-driven) religious movements. These movements radically transformed Western, and even global, Christianity. The article gives detailed attention to the role of Samuel Heinrich Fröhlich in synthesizing evangelical renewalist impulses with traditional Anabaptist convictions. It also follows the tensions that emerged, where agreed …

Reproductive Parameters And Female Breeding Season Survival Of Rio Grande Wild Turkeys In South Central Texas, Jacob White Oct 2019

Reproductive Parameters And Female Breeding Season Survival Of Rio Grande Wild Turkeys In South Central Texas, Jacob White

LSU Master's Theses

Historically, Rio Grande wild turkeys in south central Texas have been at lower densities than other portions of the state. Within the Oak-Prairie Wildlife District of Texas, Rio Grande wild turkey regulatory restrictions are different for counties in the eastern and western portions of the ecoregion. Due to perceived increases in turkey density in the eastern portion of the ecoregion (hereafter 1-bird zone), Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) considered increasing the bag limit to match counties in the western portion of the district (hereafter 4-bird zone) in order to increase hunting opportunities. However, if regulatory changes are to be …

The Amish Settlement In Honduras, 1968-1978: A (Half) Failed Attempt To Develop An Amish Understanding Of Mission, Cory Anderson, Jennifer Anderson Oct 2019

The Amish Settlement In Honduras, 1968-1978: A (Half) Failed Attempt To Develop An Amish Understanding Of Mission, Cory Anderson, Jennifer Anderson

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

For their several-hundred years of successfully maintaining Amish settlements in North America, for what reason would a group of families—largely from Nappanee, IN, and Aylmer, ON—want to start a settlement in Honduras? This account traces the genesis of this Latin American settlement to the mid-century restlessness among Old Order Amish for religious and moral reform. The account especially follows families from Daviess County, IN, who, after failed settlement attempts in Michigan and Ohio, helped found Aylmer, ON, a successful revisionist Amish settlement. From there, Peter Stoll, one of the Aylmer founders, desired to move to Honduras for two reasons: (1) …

Returning To Nature: Environmental History's Posthuman Direction, William H. Smith Iii Oct 2019

Returning To Nature: Environmental History's Posthuman Direction, William H. Smith Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this thesis were to (A) determine a new historiographical direction for environmental history through analyzing posthuman environmental change, (B) to present a new historical analysis of posthumanity, reinforced by scholarly accomplishes with the anthropocene, that allows the historian to discuss environmental history with humanity as a secondary character, and (C) to show how both the historiography of environmental history, as well as specific case studies of climate, infestations, and natural disasters, are able to present this new direction for environmental history. What has been the end result is that humanity will always improve their condition of sustainability, …

Desirable Inefficiency, Paul Ohm, Jonathan Frankle Oct 2019

Desirable Inefficiency, Paul Ohm, Jonathan Frankle

Florida Law Review

Computer scientists have recently begun designing systems that appear, at least at first glance, to be surprisingly, wastefully inefficient. A stock exchange forces all electronic trades to travel through a thirty-eight mile length of fiber-optic cable coiled up in a box; the Bitcoin protocol compels participants to solve difficult yet useless math problems with their computers; and the iPhone locks users out for many painful seconds after a mistyped password, a delay that increases with each subsequent mistake. We draw these examples and others together into a common, emerging, and underappreciated approach to digital system design, which we name “desirable …

Artful Nature And The Legacy Of Maria Sibylla Merian, Emily N. Roush, Shannon R. Zeltmann, Felicia M. Else, Kay Etheridge, Shannon Egan

Schmucker Art Catalogs

The exhibition Artful Nature and the Legacy of Maria Sibylla Merian celebrates the skills and influences of a remarkable woman from seventeenth-century Europe. Curated by Emily Roush ’21 and Shannon Zeltmann ’21 with the guidance of Professors Kay Etheridge (Biology) and Felicia Else (Art History), Emily and Shannon selected the prints, organized them into categories, and carried out research on them, much of which was relatively obscure and would have been challenging even for graduate students.

Maria Sibylla Merian lived and worked in a time of vibrant intersections of art and science in Europe. Her images of insects and plants …

Using Science To Answer Questions From Latter-Day Saint History, Ugo A. Perego Oct 2019

Using Science To Answer Questions From Latter-Day Saint History, Ugo A. Perego

BYU Studies

DNA testing has been employed to study the ancestry and posterity of Joseph Smith Jr., founder of the Mormon movement. Thanks to information found on the paternally inherited Y chromosome, for example, researchers have been able to establish a likely Irish origin for the Smith line. Y chromosome testing has also been helpful in resolving a number of paternity cases involving men who were allegedly sons of Joseph through polygamous unions. To date, all of the tests for these candidates have borne negative results.

The Church's Lament: Moving The White Church From Grief Of Complicity To Lament, Kristin Hamilton Oct 2019

The Church's Lament: Moving The White Church From Grief Of Complicity To Lament, Kristin Hamilton

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation begins with the presupposition that leaders and members of the white, evangelical church are aware that there is an ongoing racial struggle in the United States, and in the church. Beginning with the theory that the church is in denial regarding historical complicity toward racism and white supremacy, this paper uses Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s Grief Stage model to explore how the white church has become stuck in the early stages of grief (denial and anger). This exploration reviews historic and current examples in which white Christians have been complicit with systematic oppression against Black people and non-Black persons of …

The Convergence Of Financial And Esg Materiality: Taking Sustainability Mainstream, Ruth Jebe Oct 2019

The Convergence Of Financial And Esg Materiality: Taking Sustainability Mainstream, Ruth Jebe

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sustainability reporting can be seen as an attempt to bring improved environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices to mainstream business. However, this movement to mainstream is hampered by the disconnect between financial and ESG information. Both reporting streams use the concept of materiality to shape firms’ disclosure obligations, but the term carries different meanings for different organizations. One sustainability organization, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), has developed reporting standards to merge sustainability and financial information by leveraging the definition of materiality for financial reporting purposes. This use of financial materiality positions the SASB to collide with the Security and …

The Macroeconomics Of Pascal’S Wager, Paul Shea Oct 2019

The Macroeconomics Of Pascal’S Wager, Paul Shea

All Faculty Scholarship

This paper explores the determinants of religiosity in a growth model. Religion reduces the time available for labor and the perceived likelihood of hell. A genetic algorithm selects agents’ discount factors based on their parents’ wealth. A higher discount factor increases savings, encouraging wealth accumulation, but also increases the discounted disutility of eternal damnation, incentivizing religion. The model converges to intermediate levels of the discount factor and religion where wealth is maximized. The genetic process selects agents’ level of patience, and the impact on religion is a side effect. Religion thus exists in equilibrium, even if it reduces genetic fitness.

Developing A Law School Course On Presidential Impeachment, Gregory S. Crespi Oct 2019

Developing A Law School Course On Presidential Impeachment, Gregory S. Crespi

SMU Law Review Forum

This short essay discusses my motivation for and the process that I went through over the past two years developing a law school course on Presidential Impeachment and related topics. I recommend that those law school faculty members who may have only a modest constitutional law background, but who feel as I do that more sustained discussion of the questions that would be presented by an attempt to remove President Trump from office through impeachment are called for, consider also developing and offering such a course.

I found that through reading a few accessible books and supervising a handful of …

Occupation: Neoliberalism’S Role In Palestinian Apartheid, Devyn Johnson Sep 2019

Occupation: Neoliberalism’S Role In Palestinian Apartheid, Devyn Johnson

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict remains one of the most contentious political topics in our world today. Although violence has been spewed from both sides, imbalance is demonstrated in power structures used to maintain occupation by the state of Israel. Using the concept of Neoliberalism, this paper seeks to explain the motives behind state political and economic practices that subdue the Palestinian public and control the narrative of its actions. As attributes of neoliberalism such as privatization, wealth inequality, and security are considered acceptable by society, this paper also examines how injustices that exist under these attributes are ignored or denied, and …

Rediscovering The Walisongo, Indonesia: A Potential New Destination For International Pilgrimage, Pierre Fournié Sep 2019

Rediscovering The Walisongo, Indonesia: A Potential New Destination For International Pilgrimage, Pierre Fournié

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The current paper explores the tradition of Walisongo, the nine saints or nine friends of God, that according to tradition initiated the islamisation of Java in the XV and XVI centuries. Largely unknown outside of Indonesia, the Wali Songo pilgrimage remains unfamiliar in the archipelago as well.

Besides allowing a deeper understanding of the roots of Indonesian religious history and of the spread and acceptance of Islam, rediscovering the Wali Songo may help to reintroduce a peaceful image of the Muslim world. In such a way, reactivating the tradition of Wali Songo outside of the country but also inside, may …
