Fortune And Failure - Gold And Silver Smelting In The Colorado Rockies 1861 To 1900, Andrew Mueller Jan 2019

Fortune And Failure - Gold And Silver Smelting In The Colorado Rockies 1861 To 1900, Andrew Mueller

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation is a study of small-scale smelting in Colorado during the nineteenth century. Many small smelting enterprises were established throughout the mountains of the state from the mid-1860s to the mid-1880s. The smelters helped to revitalize a flagging mining industry by fostering its growth and, consequently, the development of the state before being outcompeted by larger smelting establishments developing in the growing cities on the Front Range. However, the life of these smelters was brief, and the majority failed within a few years. The role of these smelters in Colorado’s history has been largely overlooked but provide a rich …

The Role Of Academic Libraries In Creating Oral History Collection, Leili Seifi, Raziye Kazemi, Shahnaz Khademizadeh Jan 2019

The research methodology is systematic review. To this end, the related studies were searched and identified from 10 international databases in 1983 to 2019. Out of which 23 most related ones were used for present study. For validation purpose, other experts than research team were used. The research findings indicated that academic libraries could stabilize their role and place in creating collections based on oral history through its identification, preservation, promotion and …

Reality Checks For Career Women: An Interpretevist Paradigm, Mary Anthony, Werner Soontiens Jan 2019

Reality Checks For Career Women: An Interpretevist Paradigm, Mary Anthony, Werner Soontiens

Business Papers and Journal Articles

This paper reflects on the latent organisational process that leads tothe scarcity of women in senior positions. Utilising characteristics of legitimisation, institutionalisation and self-determination theories the paper observes how women manage upward mobility. Subsequently, it was important to investigate the mid-level cohorts, as there lies the critical question triggering the anomaly. Focusing on the public sector with an interest in gendered organisations, the study examines law enforcement. Conversely, the aim of this paper is to focus on why there is a continued dearth in the number of policewomen at top level positions in USA and Australia. A qualitative study with …

Agency: Married Women Traders Of Nantucket, 1765-1865, Mary L. Heen Jan 2019

Agency: Married Women Traders Of Nantucket, 1765-1865, Mary L. Heen

Law Faculty Publications

Before the enactment of separate property and contract rights for married women, generations of married women in seaport cities and towns conducted business as merchants, traders and shopkeepers. The first part of this article shows how private law facilitated their business activities through traditional agency law, the use of powers of attorney, trade accounts and family business networks. These arrangements, largely hidden from public view in family papers, letters, and diaries, permitted married women to enter into contracts, to buy and sell property, and to appear in court. Private law, like equity, thus provided a more flexible alternative to the …

Gaps In Mental Healthcare Use And Perceived Quality Between Privately Insured Lgb And Heterosexual Individuals In The United States, Yuki Hayashi Jan 2019

Gaps In Mental Healthcare Use And Perceived Quality Between Privately Insured Lgb And Heterosexual Individuals In The United States, Yuki Hayashi

Public Health Theses

Previous research has identified significantly heightened levels of mental health issues and psychological distress among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals in the U.S., as well as greater mental health service utilization among this population. Using a nationally representative sample of privately insured adults in the U.S., we investigate differences in mental healthcare utilization, characteristics of mental healthcare received, and perceived quality of care between LGB and heterosexual individuals. Key results find that privately insured LGB men and women are significantly more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to have used outpatient mental healthcare as well as out-of-network (OON) outpatient mental …

“Life Is A Game, So Fight For Survival”: The Neoliberal Logics Of Educational Colonialism Within The Battle Royale Franchise, Travis L. Wagner, S. Gavin Weiser Jan 2019

“Life Is A Game, So Fight For Survival”: The Neoliberal Logics Of Educational Colonialism Within The Battle Royale Franchise, Travis L. Wagner, S. Gavin Weiser

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This chapter explores the deployment of educational ideologies within the Japanese horror /science fiction franchise Battle Royale as related to histories of colonization by Western countries. The chapter specifically interrogates the influence of American educational practices upon Japanese schooling to explore how both expectations of individualized success and the influences of capitalist-oriented economic advancement led to Japan’s failure to achieve economic global equity with the globalized West, while becoming a model of how not to engage in postcolonial logics of capitalism. Through analysis of the various literary and filmic products within the Battle Royale franchise, the chapter argues that the …

Proceedings Of Expert Forum On First Nations Social Assistance Reform, September 3, 2019, Naiomi Metallic, Fred Wien Jan 2019

Proceedings Of Expert Forum On First Nations Social Assistance Reform, September 3, 2019, Naiomi Metallic, Fred Wien

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Social assistance, whether directed to the mainstream population or to First Nations, is not – according to Forum participants -- a sexy topic. Specifically, with respect to First Nation persons living on reserve in Canada, it has been largely a neglected field except for those directly responsible for administering it. Despite its substantive importance, it has not received a lot of attention from the academic research community, for example, nor is it usually near the top of the list of priorities for political leaders and governments.

Why is this the case? Perhaps it has to do with the history of …

A Series Of Iron Age Domestic Buildings In Field C At Tall Jalul, Paul J. Ray Jan 2019

A Series Of Iron Age Domestic Buildings In Field C At Tall Jalul, Paul J. Ray

Faculty Publications

Excavations in Field C, located roughly in the center of Tall Jalūl, immediately east of the Acropolis, on the western side of the tall, were begun in 1994, focused on the remains of a pillared house, parts of which covered the original four squares (C1-4) of the field. Unfortunately, the western wall of this building was removed, due to stone robbing, not long after the building went out of use. In an effort to locate its southern end, an additional square (C5) was opened to the south, in 1996. Not only was this side of the building found, but two …

Self-Contained Special Education Teachers' And Administrators' Perceptions Of Teacher Evaluation Systems, Kareem Thompson Jan 2019

Self-Contained Special Education Teachers' And Administrators' Perceptions Of Teacher Evaluation Systems, Kareem Thompson

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of administrators and self-contained special education teacher’s usage of their current teacher evaluation tool. Little has been studied about the use of “canned” tools to explicitly evaluate and effectively provide feedback to special education teachers who teach in self-contained settings of students with low incidence disabilities. Using an online survey with ten specific questions, this study explored the perceptions of administrators and special educators. Chi-squares were run and statistical significance were found in several of the survey questions. For example, the chi-square test of independence ran between question number two …

Review: Lincoln A. Mullen. The Chance Of Salvation: A History Of Conversion In America. Cambridge, Ma: Harvard University Press, 2017., Ben Wright Jan 2019

Review: Lincoln A. Mullen. The Chance Of Salvation: A History Of Conversion In America. Cambridge, Ma: Harvard University Press, 2017., Ben Wright

Mormon Studies Review

This bold and exciting book convincingly demonstrates how the crucible of the nineteenth century transformed American religion from something inherited to chosen. Conversion drove this rise of religious choice, and Lincoln Mullen asserts that despite the great variety of conversion experiences, “conversions have created a common understanding of religion as choice” (p. 9). Mullen even acknowledges that most Americans in the nineteenth century remained in the religious tradition into which they were born, but by the end of the century, Americans came to think of even this stasis as a conscious choice. Whether they changed traditions or remained, by the …

The Bible And The Book Of Mormon: A Review Of Literature, Nicholas J. Frederick Jan 2019

The Bible And The Book Of Mormon: A Review Of Literature, Nicholas J. Frederick

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The enigmatic relationship between the Book of Mormon and the Bible goes all the way back to one of its earliest reviewers, Restorationist Alexander Campbell, who noted inconsistencies between the two. Campbell addressed the Book of Mormon text's conflation of the Old and New Covenants, differing on details such as Jesus's birthplace and, in particular, how much the Book of Mormon's pre-Christian peoples anticipated New Testament events. The Book of Mormon prophet Lehi, Campbell wrote, "developed the records of Matthew, Luke, and John, six hundred years before John the Baptist was born." From the time of Campbell and into the …

The World Of Miracles: Science, And Healing In Caesarius Of Heisterbach’S Dialogus Miraculorum (Ca.1240) In Competition With Magic, Albrecht Classen Jan 2019

The World Of Miracles: Science, And Healing In Caesarius Of Heisterbach’S Dialogus Miraculorum (Ca.1240) In Competition With Magic, Albrecht Classen

Quidditas

This paper offers a close reading of some of the miracle tales dedicated to the Virgin Mary as contained in Caesarius of Heisterbach’s Dialogus miraculorum (ca. 1240) in order to shed light on the fundamental narrative structures of this genre, the association between the narratives and their material background, and to build a case to argue that medieval miracle narratives actually shared much in common with the discourse on magic. After a critical examination of magic itself and its properties as imagined or realized in the Middle Ages, the analysis highlights the ‘miraculous’ or maybe even ‘magical’ features of Caesarius’s …

Departments And Disciplinary Gatekeeping: The Sociolinguistics Of Spanish In Us Academia, José Del Valle Jan 2019

Departments And Disciplinary Gatekeeping: The Sociolinguistics Of Spanish In Us Academia, José Del Valle

Publications and Research

José del Valle, in his contribution to our “Sociolinguistic Frontiers” series, looks at the intersection of the sociolinguistic study of Spanish in the US and the transformations of Spanish language departments in higher education. Del Valle traces the history of the institutionalization of Spanish teaching and study and its effects on linguistic research’s position within Spanish departments. Shifts in approaches to the use of language in social practice, and the growing demands on language units to act as service departments for language learners, has isolated scholars in those institutional homes from broader integration into sociolinguistic research.

The Impact Of Social Determinants Of Health On The Efficacy Of School-Based Interventions For Adolescents With Adhd, Cathrin D. Green Jan 2019

The Impact Of Social Determinants Of Health On The Efficacy Of School-Based Interventions For Adolescents With Adhd, Cathrin D. Green

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescents with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience impairment in academic functioning in the school and home environment. Because of this, many school- and clinic-based interventions have been developed to target these problems. Initially, clinic-based interventions were mainly used; however, these interventions were associated with many barriers to care, such as lack of transportation, financial resources, and time. Therefore, school-based interventions were developed to address these barriers. However, there has been minimal research evaluating the role of social determinants of health on the efficacy of school-based interventions. In a sample of 222 adolescents with ADHD randomly assigned to receive either a …

A Lingua Franca Afloat And Ashore: Contact English In American Sea Fiction, 1824 To 1914, Fredrik Reidar Stark Jan 2019

A Lingua Franca Afloat And Ashore: Contact English In American Sea Fiction, 1824 To 1914, Fredrik Reidar Stark

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines how American sea writers between 1824 and 1914 promoted new perceptions of English as a various and expanding intercultural and international language. It argues that presentations of language contact form a critically underemphasized component of American nautical literature. It surveys how such presentations take shape in James Fenimore Cooper’s The Pilot (1824) and The Crater (1847), Edgar Allan Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838), and Richard Henry Dana’s Two Years before the Mast (1840). It asserts that Herman Melville’s innovative presentations of contact between pidgins and native varieties of English in Typee (1846) and Omoo …

Hazardous Waste Site Proximity And Type 2 Diabetes: From Youths To Adults, Theresa Ann Johnson Jan 2019

Hazardous Waste Site Proximity And Type 2 Diabetes: From Youths To Adults, Theresa Ann Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in adults and youths. Persistent organic pollutants and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as pesticides, dioxins, and organochlorines, are omnipresent and persist in the environment with potential for human exposure via contaminated air, waterways, soil, and human food supply. EDCs have been correlated with diabetes incidence and risks. Residential proximity to hazardous waste sites (HWS) has been correlated with increased hospital admission rates for diabetes. The study used a sample population (N = 1,724), ages ≥ 12 years from the 2005-2012 Continuous NHANES and HWS data from the National Priorities List of Superfund Sites. …

Durkheim’S Greatest Blunder, Stephen M. Marson, J. Porter Lillis Jan 2019

Durkheim’S Greatest Blunder, Stephen M. Marson, J. Porter Lillis

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In describing fatalism in Suicide, Durkheim executes two blunders. The first can be categorized in errors of commission while the second should be included in errors of omission. In the error of commission area, he hypothesizes two platforms for existence of fatalistic suicide. Without employing theory-embedded data, he contends that infertility is a catalyst for fatalistic suicidal. Later, he asserts that slavery is fertile soil for fatalistic suicide. Although there is suicidal data in these two arenas, a closer inspection demonstrates that these are not characteristics of fatalistic suicide. For errors of omission, he failed to systematically observe …

Bioterrorism Hardening: An Exploratory Study Of Emts Preparedness And Practices, Ndubuisi Chinemerem Ejike Jan 2019

Bioterrorism Hardening: An Exploratory Study Of Emts Preparedness And Practices, Ndubuisi Chinemerem Ejike

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The 2001 anthrax attacks heightened awareness of the possibility of weaponizing biological agents such as Ebola, anthrax, and smallpox and hence, the Bioterrorism Act of 2002 to prevent biological attacks and reduce bioterrorism threats and vulnerabilities. However, the 2014 Ebola epidemic raised concerns about unpreparedness for bioterrorism within the healthcare community and about secondary infections from healthcare workers. Using Kingdon's conceptualization of multiple streams as the foundation, the purpose of this case study was to explore the nature of bioterrorism threats and the level of preparedness of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who were involved in the 2014 Ebola epidemic in …

Constructing A Theology Of Relational Life Through The Themes Of Creation, Incarnation, And Re-Creation As An Alternative To Current Categories Of Religions, Andrew Tompkins Jan 2019

Constructing A Theology Of Relational Life Through The Themes Of Creation, Incarnation, And Re-Creation As An Alternative To Current Categories Of Religions, Andrew Tompkins

Dissertations

This dissertation argues that current categories of religions are overly reliant on Western Enlightenment-based presuppositions and academic thinking that creates barriers in understanding God’s desire for all people to have abundant life. Many theologians and missiologists utilize these inherited categories without first subjecting them to the biblical canon. As a result, the theological and missiological discourse on religions is often grounded in extra-biblical presuppositions rooted primarily in an overly high view of human reason that do not accurately portray a biblical approach to relational life. These presuppositions do not accurately portray a biblical approach to relational life. I, therefore, compared …

Islam, Christianity, Traditional Religions And Power Politics In Northern Nigeria Since Pre-Islamic Period, Emmanuel M. Abar Jan 2019

Islam, Christianity, Traditional Religions And Power Politics In Northern Nigeria Since Pre-Islamic Period, Emmanuel M. Abar

Dissertations

Problem

Currently in Northern Nigeria, religious interaction among the three major religious traditions, Islam, Christianity, and African Traditional Religion, is marred by violent religious conflicts. Also, competing concepts of religious legitimacy, which appeal to the historical heritage of Nigeria, are often used to validate and justify the violation of religious freedom. Does the current state of religious interaction among the various religious groups reflect the true heritage of religious interaction in Northern Nigeria? Or is it possible that the history of the interaction between African Traditional Religions, Islam, and Christianity in the past might actually be a heritage that points …

Patently Uncertain, Daniel R. Cahoy Jan 2019

Patently Uncertain, Daniel R. Cahoy

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Innovation is an inherently uncertain process. Success is typically coupled with risk and we can only hope that those with great ideas will persevere. To encourage innovation, society reduces some of the innovation risk through structures like funding systems, regulation, and of course intellectual property rights. But what happens when uncertainty strikes the legal protection devices themselves? Faced with unclear rules and increasingly speculative rewards, some innovators may simply stop playing the game.

Such uncertainty has recently been a topic of great concern in the U.S. patent system. Some believe that the suddenly unknowable nature of fundamental questions like what …

Review Of Exiled In Modernity: Delacroix, Civilization, And Barbarity By David O’Brien, Heather Belnap Jan 2019

Review Of Exiled In Modernity: Delacroix, Civilization, And Barbarity By David O’Brien, Heather Belnap

Faculty Publications

Hailed as both one of the last of the Old Masters (“je suis un pur classique”) and as the quintessential Romantic rebel (“the Victor Hugo of painting”), Eugène Delacroix stands as a towering but liminal figure in the history of art. In Exiled in Modernity: Delacroix, Civilization, and Barbarism, David O’Brien explores how Delacroix’s later artistic period is deeply engaged with pressing issues of the age, including the development of civilization, the processes of modernity, the conceptualization of the Other, the place of nature, and so on. While acknowledging the place for political interpretations of Delacroix’s work, the author is …

Detecting Soil Macrofauna Using Ground-Penetrating Radar, Melanie N. Stock, David J. Hart, Nicholas J. Balster Jan 2019

Detecting Soil Macrofauna Using Ground-Penetrating Radar, Melanie N. Stock, David J. Hart, Nicholas J. Balster

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Fossorial amphibians spend up to ten months belowground, but research into this critical habitat has been impeded by a lack of noninvasive detection methods. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR), however, offers a promising tool because amphibians have theoretically strong electromagnetic (EM) contrasts relative to the soil matrix, and thus potentially high detectability. The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate GPR by (2) experimentally-inducing three soil thermal regimes that promote stratification in the burrowing depths of 15 Eastern American Toads (Anaxyrus americanus americanus) during the winter of 2011–2012 in Madison, WI, USA. We calculated reflectability and established the unique …

Exhibiting Sovereignty: Tribal Museums In The Great Lakes Region, 1969-2010, Meagan Mcchesney Jan 2019

Exhibiting Sovereignty: Tribal Museums In The Great Lakes Region, 1969-2010, Meagan Mcchesney

Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the foundation and development of tribal museums in the Great Lakes region is a form of activism -- a deliberate action performed for the purpose of inciting positive political, social, cultural, and/or economic change -- and that the functions of tribal museums enable Native activism to continue and evolve to reflect and address new historical understandings and contemporary circumstances. I argue that in the Great Lakes region, Native activism continued beyond the highly publicized movement of the 1960s and 70s, and manifested in ways suited to address regionally and tribally-based needs. Control over interpretations of the …

Brexit... A Lifetime Of Purgatory For The Uk's Environmental Laws - Or Is There A Stairway To Heaven?, Philip Connor Jan 2019

Brexit... A Lifetime Of Purgatory For The Uk's Environmental Laws - Or Is There A Stairway To Heaven?, Philip Connor

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This paper considers the prospect that the United Kingdom's decision to withdraw from the European Union may have a detrimental effect on its environmental protections. Brexit may provide the opportunity to pursue a more environmentally focused agenda, but it is argued that the UK's plan to transpose EU legislation underestimates the complexity of the task and that the UK lacks the resources to replicate the system it currently enjoys. On this basis it is thought that a reordering of environmental law is more likely than a radical re writing of it.

The Nature Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli St127, Robert William O'Hara Jan 2019

The Nature Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli St127, Robert William O'Hara

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli ST127 is a recently emerged clone that is reported to cause a small, but significant, proportion of urinary tract infections. Paradoxically, the low prevalence of ST127 in most published studies is also accompanied by a virulence potential significantly higher than many of the leading uropathogenic lineages (cf. ST131) using an established uropathogenic PCR virulence assay. This study explores the contradictory nature of these findings by evaluating some of the major aspects concerning the diagnosis, genomic repertoire and pathogenicity of strains of this sequence type in relation to its recorded prevalence. Analysis was performed to determine if UPEC …
