A Survey Of Theater In Metro Manila: Selected Productions, January–December 2018, Arturo Hilado Oct 2019

A Survey Of Theater In Metro Manila: Selected Productions, January–December 2018, Arturo Hilado

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Excerpt: Theatre continued to flourish in Metro Manila over 2018. What is remarkable in the scene this past year is the prominence of outstanding full-length productions of original Filipino material. These have of course been in evidence in previous years as well, but seldom have they so dominated the roster of quality stage output. Just as notable was that the output went beyond the traditional purveyors of Pilipino-language theatre, such as PETA and CCP’s Tanghalang Pilipino. Eye-opening was the number of theatre companies almost totally dedicated to putting on English-language works, which broke mold to stage ambitious high-quality Filipino works …

Speech-Language Pathologist–Guided Morphological Awareness Instruction In The General Education Classroom, Victoria Henbest Oct 2019

Speech-Language Pathologist–Guided Morphological Awareness Instruction In The General Education Classroom, Victoria Henbest

Victoria S. Henbest Publications

Research has shown that instruction in morphological awareness improves students' understanding and use of affixes. However, morphological awareness instruction, typically, is not provided in the general education classroom, and there are few documented collaborations between teachers and speech-language pathologists (SLPs), the latter of whom have a unique expertise in language. Thus, the purpose of this article was to determine the feasibility of an SLP-guided morphological awareness instructional program in a general education classroom. After completing a webinar training in morphological awareness, 2 general education teachers implemented morphological awareness lessons in their classrooms over an 8-week period. The teachers and collaborating SLP …

Has The "M" Word Been Framed? Marijuana, Cannabis And Public Opinion, Robert A. Mikos, Cindy D. Kam Oct 2019

Has The "M" Word Been Framed? Marijuana, Cannabis And Public Opinion, Robert A. Mikos, Cindy D. Kam

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Over the past two decades, a growing cadre of US states has legalized the drug commonly known as “marijuana.” But even as more states legalize the drug, proponents of reform have begun to shun the term “marijuana” in favor of the term “cannabis.” Arguing that the “M” word has been tainted and may thus dampen public support for legalization, policy advocates have championed “cannabis” as an alternative and more neutral name for the drug. Importantly, however, no one has tested whether calling the drug “cannabis” as opposed to “marijuana” actually has any effect on public opinion. Using an original survey …

Coupled Pore-To-Continuum Multiscale Modeling Of Dynamic Particle Filtration Processes In Porous Media, John Rayner Blears Oct 2019

Coupled Pore-To-Continuum Multiscale Modeling Of Dynamic Particle Filtration Processes In Porous Media, John Rayner Blears

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Modeling particle transport and retention in porous media is important in fields such as hydrocarbon extraction, groundwater filtration, and membrane separation. While the continuum-scale (>1 m) is usually of practical interest, pore-scale (1-100 μm) dynamics govern the transport and retention of particles. Therefore, accurate modeling of continuum-scale behavior requires an effective incorporation of pore-scale dynamics. Due to current computational limits however, the large spatial and temporal discrepancies of these scales prohibit modeling an entire continuum-scale system as a single pore-scale model. Even if a pore-scale model could incorporate every pore contained in a continuum-scale system, an upscaling scheme that …

The Pearl Rush In Aru, 1916; A Case Study In Writing Commodity History In Southeast Asia, Adrian Vickers Oct 2019

The Pearl Rush In Aru, 1916; A Case Study In Writing Commodity History In Southeast Asia, Adrian Vickers

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

While the long history of “commerce” in Southeast Asia is well studied, less examination has been made of the histories of capitalism, particularly in terms of the encounters that took place around commodities. This article provides a translation and analysis of a description of Dobo on Aru in 1911. At the time it was a “Klondike”, on what Julia Martínez and I have termed “the pearl frontier”. The Aru islands were the site for an Australian-led pearl shell consortium that ran from the beginning of the twentieth century until the 1940s, which brought in a large number of Japanese divers …

Oral Traditions In Cryptic Song Lyrics; Continuous Cultural Revitalization In Batuley, A. Ross Gordon, Sonny A. Djonler

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Oral knowledge and teachings are referenced but not salient in cryptic song lyrics sung at ritual festivals in Batuley villages of the Aru Islands in Eastern Indonesia. The article examines the relation of the lyrics in songs to associated teachings and how they are vitalized and transmitted over centuries with veracity. Song teachings relate to pearl oyster and sea cucumber harvests, and cosmological beliefs associated with the Maluku Siwa-Lima trade-based moiety system, which took on a unique form in the Aru Islands. Song-related teachings demonstrate cultural adaptations giving meaning to centuries of peripheral engagement in hemispheric trade networks by a …

Indonesia’S Cultural Resilience Responses To China’S Belt And Road Initiatives: Sei Mangkei Sez As A Case Study, R. Tuty Nur Mutia Enoch Muas, Reynaldo De Archellie, Setiawati Darmojuwono

International Review of Humanities Studies

Humans construct various strategic actions and produce cultural products to overcome life problems during certain situations. In the context of the modern nation-state, regulations which are issued by the government in a country and are aimed to help members of their society to overcome life's problems can be called a cultural product. In response to the Belt and Road Initiatives/BRI initiated by the PRC government, the government under President Joko Widodo in the first period issued a Maritime Axis program aimed at building a number of infrastructures, ranging from ports, toll roads, airports, and industrial zones spread throughout Indonesia. This …

BACKGROUND: Patients with relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with mutations in the FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 gene (FLT3) infrequently have a response to salvage chemotherapy. Gilteritinib is an oral, potent, selective FLT3 inhibitor with single-agent activity in relapsed or refractory FLT3-mutated AML.

METHODS: In a phase 3 trial, we randomly assigned adults with relapsed or refractory FLT3-mutated AML in a 2:1 ratio to receive either gilteritinib (at a dose of 120 mg per day) or salvage chemotherapy. The two primary end points were overall survival and the percentage of patients who had complete remission …

Development And Evaluation Of Silica-Based Lectin Microcolumns For Glycoform Analysis Of Alpha1-Acid Glycoprotein, Chenhua Zhang, David S. Hage Oct 2019

Development And Evaluation Of Silica-Based Lectin Microcolumns For Glycoform Analysis Of Alpha1-Acid Glycoprotein, Chenhua Zhang, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

Silica-based lectin microcolumns were developed and optimized for the separation and analysis of glycoform fractions in alpha1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) based on both the degree of branching and level of fucosylation. Concanavalin A (Con A) and Aleuria Aurantia lectin (AAL) were immobilized onto HPLC-grade silica by reductive amination and packed into 2.1 mm i.d. × 5.0 cm microcolumns. Factors examined for these microcolumns include their protein content, binding capacity, binding strength and band-broadening under isocratic conditions (Con A) or step elution conditions (AAL) and in the presence of various flow rates or temperatures. These factors were examined by using experiments based …

Dietary Depletion Of Milk Exosomes And Their Microrna Cargos Elicits A Depletion Of Mir-200a-3p And Elevated Intestinal Inflammation And Chemokine (C-X-C Motif) Ligand 9 Expression In Mdr1a−/− Mice, Di Wu, Hatem Kittana, Jiang Shu, Stephen D. Kachman, Juan Cui, Amanda E. Ramer-Tait, Janos Zempleni

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: Exosomes transfer regulatory microRNAs (miRs) from donor cells to recipient cells. Exosomes and miRs originate from both endogenous synthesis and dietary sources such as milk. miR-200a-3p is a negative regulator of the proinflammatory chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 9 (CXCL9). Male Mdr1a−/− mice spontaneously develop clinical signs of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Objectives: We assessed whether dietary depletion of exosomes and miRs alters the severity of IBD in Mdr1a−/− mice owing to aberrant regulation of proinflammatory cytokines.

Methods: Starting at 5 wk of age, 16 male Mdr1a−/− mice were fed either milk exosome– and RNA-sufficient (ERS) or milk exosome– and …
