Socio-Anthropological Methods To Study The Feasibility And Acceptability Of The Minimally Invasive Autopsy From The Perspective Of Local Communities: Lessons Learnt From A Large Multi-Centre Study, Maria Maixenchs, Rui Anselmo, Guillermo Martínez Pérez, Kelvin Oruko, Selidji Todagbe Agnandji, Pamela Catherine Angoissa Minsoko, Kounandji Diarra, Mahamane Djiteye, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Shujaat Zaidi

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

The minimally invasive autopsy (MIA), an innovative approach for obtaining post-mortem samples of key organs, is increasingly being recognized as a robust methodology for cause of death (CoD) investigation, albeit so far limited to pilot studies and research projects. A better understanding of the real causes of death in middle- and low-income countries, where underlying causes of death are seldom determined, would allow improved health planning, more targeted prioritization of available resources and the implementation of coherent public health policies. This paper discusses lessons learnt from the implementation of a Feasibility and Acceptability (F&A) study evaluating the MIA approach in …

When Silence Is Golden: The Use Of Strategic Silence In Crisis Management, Phuong D. Le, Hui Xun Teo, Augustine Pang, Yuling Li, Cai-Qin Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: Scholars have discouraged using silence in crises as it magnifies the information vacuum (see Pang, 2013). The purpose of this paper is to argue for its viability and explore the type of silence that can be used. Design/methodology/approach: Eight international cases were analyzed to examine how silence was adopted, sustained and broken. Findings: The findings uncovered three intention-based typologies of strategic silence: delaying, avoiding and hiding silences. Among such, avoiding/hiding silence intensified crises and adversely affected post-silence organizational image when forcefully broken, while delaying silence helped preserve/restore image with primary stakeholders if successfully sustained and broken as planned. Research …

Professionalism Kills The Trading Star: Explaining Member Participation In Trading Communities, Sabine Benoit, Jens Hogreve, Christina Sichtmann, Nicola Bilstein

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Trading communities provide non-commercial members with an online platform on which to exchange goods. Its success depends on member participation; however, little is known about its drivers. Based on literature we identify five drivers. To capture their impact over time,we test a latent growth curve model with longitudinal data, comparing the effects at an initial point of time with their impact on the growth of member participation over three subsequent periods. The results show that providers’ responsiveness and community identification have a positive effect on the initial level, but not on growth. Members’ enjoyment has no level effect, but a …

Emotional Intensity: An Additional Dimension To Understand Emotional Confidence And Purchase Intentions, Wajid Hussain Rizvi Jan 2019

Emotional Intensity: An Additional Dimension To Understand Emotional Confidence And Purchase Intentions, Wajid Hussain Rizvi

Business Review

This paper explores the role of emotional intensity as a determinant of emotional confidence and purchase intentions. It analyzes the difference between low and high emotional confidence and emotional intensity groups in terms of their purchase intentions in the car buying context. Only valence and combined valence-intensity structural models were used to assess respective influences on emotional confidence. The results reveal that the combined impact of valence and intensity has a greater positive and significant influence on emotional confidence. Furthermore, groups with higher emotional confidence and higher emotional intensity show higher purchase intentions. This study contributes to a better understanding …

Graduate Student Competencies In Working With Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Youth, Rachael Roberts Jan 2019

Graduate Student Competencies In Working With Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Youth, Rachael Roberts

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The focus and purpose of this dissertation was to explore students’ who are enrolled in APA-accredited clinical psychology doctoral programs self-perceived competency levels for working with LGB youth. This research utilized the Sexual Orientation Counselor Competency Scale (SOCCS; Bidell, 2005) in conjunction with an experience and demographic questionnaire. A survey was sent to all APA-accredited clinical psychology doctoral programs and all responses were analyzed through correlational analysis. The primary research question dealt with the possibility of a relationship between access and utilization of doctoral program training (in class or otherwise), practicum experiences, and level of confidence that graduate students have …

Involuntary "Whiteness": The Acculturation Of Black Doctoral Female Students In The Field Of Clinical Psychology, Carmela A. Maxell-Harrison Jan 2019

Involuntary "Whiteness": The Acculturation Of Black Doctoral Female Students In The Field Of Clinical Psychology, Carmela A. Maxell-Harrison

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation is based on qualitative research that documents the experiences of Black women matriculating through clinical psychology doctoral programs in predominantly white institutions (PWIs) and the perceived psychological effects of becoming a psychologist in a stigmatized field. Additionally, the historical and collective traumas that are continually experienced by this group and their coping mechanisms are explored and highlighted. More specifically, as existing research has revealed, Black women in doctoral programs in general experience a series of responses to racialized and gendered discriminatory practices leading them to withdraw from their programs or invoke coping mechanisms that may be counterintuitive to …

“We’Re Together”: An Exploration Of Interracial Couples’ Perceptions Of Support And Relational Therapy, Maxine Notice Jan 2019

“We’Re Together”: An Exploration Of Interracial Couples’ Perceptions Of Support And Relational Therapy, Maxine Notice

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Interracial couples in the United States experience disproportionate amounts of adversity throughout their relationships. Backlash for loving interracially results in denied access to supportive systems, which literature indicates occurs commonly between micro and macro systems. Using ecological systems and narrative theories, a mixed methodological study was conducted using the Fragile Families Child and Wellbeing study to explore participant’s use of relational therapy and perceptions of access support systems. Subsequently, sixty interracial couple members completed a survey expressing perceptions of relational therapy, and the influence of support systems on their usage. Results indicate interracial and same-race couples attend relational therapy at …

Sexual Desire As Experienced By South Asian Women Living In British Columbia, Seema M. Buksh Jan 2019

Sexual Desire As Experienced By South Asian Women Living In British Columbia, Seema M. Buksh

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Cultural beliefs and values play a significant role in the conceptualization, expression, and experience of sexual desire and functioning. Previous studies have found higher mainstream acculturation was associated with higher sexual desire and arousal. Many of these studies have also linked the cultural effects on sexual functioning to culture-differences in sexual conservatism. Within South Asian culture there is a propensity towards sexual conservatism, especially in relation to female sexual desire, yet research with regards to sexual desire and South Asian women is absent from the literature. Given the dearth of research related to this topic, further research in this area …

Forgotten Victims: Understanding Latino/A Non-Offending Parents Of Sexually Abused Children, Alba Rocio Andrade Jan 2019

Forgotten Victims: Understanding Latino/A Non-Offending Parents Of Sexually Abused Children, Alba Rocio Andrade

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Childhood sexual abuse is widely condemned by society and religion (Roesler & Wind, 1994; McCallum, 2001). Nevertheless, it is estimated that approximately one in three girls and one in six boys are sexually abused by the time they turn 18 years old (Stauffer and Deblinger, 1996). This trauma affects the victim as well as other members of the family including the non-offending parent(s). However, services are often provided only to the victimized child, which overlooks the needs of the non-offending parents. The existing body of research into the stressors experienced by non-offending parents typically is focused on non-offending parents of …

Effect Of Bisphosphonates On Function And Mobility Among Children With Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Systematic Review, Christopher Constantino, Joseph Krzak, Alissa Fial, Karen M. Kruger, Jacob Rammer, Katarina Radmanovic, Peter A. Smith, Gerald F. Harris

Library Faculty Research and Publications

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that results in bone fragility and deformity. Management is multi‐disciplinary. Although pharmacologic intervention with bisphosphonates (BP) is a standard of care for individuals with severe OI, no consensus or reviews were found that focus on the effects of bisphosphonates on function and mobility. PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and PEDro databases were searched for eligible articles for this review. Methodological quality was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for risk of bias. Twenty‐six studies (801 children) were reviewed and five showed a low risk of bias. Included studies …

Relaxed Mental State Detection Using The Emotiv Epoc And Adaptive Threshold Algorithms, Olin L. Anderson Jan 2019

Relaxed Mental State Detection Using The Emotiv Epoc And Adaptive Threshold Algorithms, Olin L. Anderson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The electroencephalogram (EEG) has proven to be useful in a wide variety of applications, including: diagnosis of mental disorders, psychological research, neurofeedback, and brain-computer interfacing. Most such applications of the EEG benefit from an ability to automatically detect when the subject is in a relaxed state. Recently, inexpensive and relatively easy to use EEG systems, with multiple electrodes, have become available at prices comparable to cellular phones or game machines. This project’s purpose is to investigate the feasibility of real-time classification of a subject's relaxation state using one such consumer-grade EEG system, the Emotiv Epoc. The subject's state is classified …

Ecopsychology Revisited, Jorge Conesa-Sevilla Jan 2019

Ecopsychology Revisited, Jorge Conesa-Sevilla

Trade & Scholarly Monographs

Ecopsychology Revisited is a critique of and deconstructive approach to several trends termed “ecopsychology.” This work attempts to bring light to some of the misconceptions that have hardened as “ecopsychology,” as these ideas have been reinterpreted and sometimes oversimplified by the general public and some professionals outside mainstream psychology. Part of the confusion arose when “ecopsychology” became inadequately amalgamated with other ideas. Nevertheless, within the social and behavioral sciences, at least, there is great value in devising and applying evidence-based strategies that track the normative ramifications dealing with cognition, emotion and behavior, exploring how or why humans relate to natural …

Evidence On Fire, Jennifer D. Oliva, Valena E. Beety Jan 2019

Evidence On Fire, Jennifer D. Oliva, Valena E. Beety

Faculty Scholarship

Fire science, a field largely developed by lay “arson investigators,” police officers, or similar first responders untrained in chemistry and physics, has been historically dominated by unreliable methodology, demonstrably false conclusions, and concomitant miscarriages of justice. Fire investigators are neither subject to proficiency testing nor required to obtain more than a high school education. Perhaps surprisingly, courts have largely spared many of the now- debunked tenets of fire investigation any serious scientific scrutiny in criminal arson cases. This Article contrasts the courts’ ongoing lax admissibility of unreliable fire-science evidence in criminal cases with their strict exclusion of the same flimsy …

A Brief Report: Interpersonal Violence Exposure And Violence Myth Acceptance In The Ohio Deaf Community, Stefanie J. Day, Kelsey A. Cappetta, Melissa L. Anderson Jan 2019

A Brief Report: Interpersonal Violence Exposure And Violence Myth Acceptance In The Ohio Deaf Community, Stefanie J. Day, Kelsey A. Cappetta, Melissa L. Anderson

JADARA

Interpersonal violence is a leading cause of death and pervasive public health issue in the US. Although some research suggests that Deaf people experience disparities in interpersonal violence exposure compared to the general population, most prior research has been conducted using written English survey measures or in areas where exceptionally high levels of educational attainment failed to mirror the characteristics of the Deaf community at large. To address these limitations, the current secondary analysis leveraged data collected via an American Sign Language survey instrument to compare rates of interpersonal violence exposure and violence myth acceptance between Deaf (n = …

Service Quality Within Officially Licensed University Retail Outlets, Michelle Childs, Robin Hardin, Gi-Yong Koo, Kwangho Park

Global Sport Business Journal

The collegiate licensing market is large and becoming increasingly competitive, particularly for officially licensed university retail outlets. In such competitive environments, retailers should have a strong customer orientation and provide exceptional customer service to foster loyalty. Based on responses from patrons of an official university retail outlet (n=249), this study found that dimensions of service quality (technical, environmental, and functional) impact customers’ satisfaction and subsequent loyalty. Further, this study found that when consumers identify with a team (i.e., team identification and identification through apparel), higher levels of service quality are perceived. Based on results, retailers can distinguish their retail outlet …

Effects Of Benefits Derived From Campus Recreation On Emotional Attachment Towards The University, Gi-Yong Koo, Anthony Dixon, Sara Shoffner, Tucker Rainey, Junmo Sung

Global Sport Business Journal

The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) identify the underlying structure of a relatively large set of physical, social, and psychological benefits students gain from campus recreation participation, and (2) determine how physical, social, and psychological benefits impact their level of emotional attachment to the university. Findings revealed that a three-factor model was acceptable to explain the underlying structure of the identified benefits. Decomposition of the significant relationships also indicated that physical benefits have a significant impact on social and psychological benefits, which, in turn, influence emotional attachment towards the university. Moreover, the indirect relationships between physical benefits and …

The Manifestations Of Fatigue In Amateur Boxing Performance, Emily C. Dunn Jan 2019

The Manifestations Of Fatigue In Amateur Boxing Performance, Emily C. Dunn

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

A subjective method of judgment, the “Ten Point Must-System” (TPMS), was introduced into amateur boxing in 2013. To be successful, boxers must deliver forceful punches and exert dominance over an opponent. There has been limited research examining the strategies used by boxers to win fights under the TPMS and whether these strategies induce fatigue that is sufficient to significantly affect punch force. The overall objective of the five studies contained in this thesis was to describe, in relation to fatigue, the performance characteristics of male amateur boxers under the TPMS, and improve our understanding of the physical characteristics associated with …

The Influence Of Barbell And Body Position On Force-Time Characteristics In The Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull, Stuart Nathan Guppy Jan 2019

The Influence Of Barbell And Body Position On Force-Time Characteristics In The Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull, Stuart Nathan Guppy

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Publication 1: The Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull: A Review and Methodology – Part 1 Isometric tests are commonly used to monitor physical qualities that underpin athletic performance. As single-joint laboratory-based tests display poor relationships to the multi-joint movements found in sport, multi-joint isometric tests like the isometric midthigh pull (IMTP) are commonly used instead. Force-time characteristics in these multijoint tests typically display stronger relationships to dynamic performance, particularly in the case of the isometric mid-thigh pull. As such this review focuses on the relationships between force-time characteristics in the IMTP and dynamic athletic performance.

Publication 2: The Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull: A …

Gamma Irradiation Response Of Photonic Crystal And Standard Optical Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors For Radiation Dosimetry, Desmond Baccini Jan 2019

Gamma Irradiation Response Of Photonic Crystal And Standard Optical Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors For Radiation Dosimetry, Desmond Baccini

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study investigates the use of Optical Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors (FBGs) for Gamma Radiation Dosimetry. A comparative analysis of responses to gamma irradiation between standard commercial FBGs and new generation FBGs written in Photonic Crystal fibre (PCF) were examined under similar regimes and conditions. Current research suggests that the FBGs performance, when exposed to Cobalt-60 gamma irradiation, can suffer cross sensitivity problems resulting from different external effects such as temperature. However, FBGs written in PCFs may be able to overcome these problems due to their design, flexibility of the shape, and size of the micro-holes in a PCF.
