Promoting Inclusive Social Dynamics In Mixed-Income Development: Conceptual Framework, Joni Hirsch, Mark L. Joseph
Promoting Inclusive Social Dynamics In Mixed-Income Development: Conceptual Framework, Joni Hirsch, Mark L. Joseph
Faculty Scholarship
This conceptual framework examines the process of promoting more inclusive social dynamics in mixed-income communities. Each slide depicts two possible pathways: an inclusionary pathway on top and an exclusionary pathway below. These pathways are not mutually exclusive and are often both at play. The slides provide increasing levels of detail about the pathways. Though represented for simplicity as a linear process, in reality the process is likely more cyclical.

Range Of Motion Changes In Female Elite Swimmers Throughout A Competitive Season, Mccall E. Christian, Lindsey E. Eberman
Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
Upper extremity injuries are the most common injury in swimming athletes specifically in the collegiate setting. Females in particular, are more likely to suffer these injuries when comparing to male collegiate swimmers. “Swimmer Shoulder”, a generic term for overuse shoulder injuries in the swimming population occurs with high rate and intensity of training. Significant factors that have been found to contribute to this pathology are deficits in internal rotation, lack of stability, and increased demands on the shoulder. The aim for this clinical outcomes project was to evaluate changes in range of motion (ROM) total arc of the shoulder, and …

Regionally Interdependent Applications Of Total Motion Release® And Active Rotational Shoulder Range Of Motion In Overhead Athletes, R. Ross Dexter, Terylan K. Loftis, Russell T. Baker, Timothy E. Speicher
Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
Healthy athletes commonly engage in pre-participation warm-up strategies designed to physiologically and mechanically prepare the body for training and competition. Alterations in rotational range of motion (ROM) of the dominant shoulder in overhead athletes, resulting in total rotation ROM loss, correlate with performance deficit, injury risk, and lost training time. Researchers have suggested that interventions using Total Motion Release® (TMR®) increase shoulder ROM more effectively than traditional warm-up methods. A randomized pre-test post-test trial was used to explore the effects of a regionally interdependent application of TMR® via a forward flexed trunk twist (FFTT) and seated straight leg raise (SLR) …

Improving Compassion Measurement In The Workforce By Analyzing Users’ Mouse-Cursor Movements, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Haley Kirk, Joseph S. Valacich
Faculty Publications
Compassion is often an important characteristic of effective employees in the workplace. To measure improvements in employee compassion, identify shortcomings, and even screen applicants, researchers and practitioners have sought reliable measures of compassion. Measuring compassion, however, can be very difficult because people are hesitant reporting a lack of compassion, due to their desire to be viewed favorably by others. We draw on the domain of human-computer interaction to help address this issue. Namely, we propose a theoretically-grounded methodology for helping differentiate between high and low compassion by monitoring users’ mouse-cursor movements in specialized online surveys. We find that people with …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Spatial interaction and the locational structure between observations have recently gained more attention in the field of econometrics for both cross-sectional and panel data analyses. Compared to a non-spatial economic model, a spatial model relaxes the assumption of independency in observations. This research will apply spatial econometrics modeling in three different fields in applied economics: 1) water charge and minimum monthly access charge in West Virginia municipalities, 2) Naloxone access law and opioid overdose deaths among the U.S. states, and 3) 2.5 concentrations and asthma hospitalizations in Pennsylvania counties. Based on the nature of water resource imposing spillovers in water …

Stigma, Attitudes, And Intentions To Seek Mental Health Services In College Student-Athletes, Robert C. Hilliard M.S.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous researchers have found several factors that act as barriers to college student-athletes seeking mental health services (López & Levy, 2013; Moore, 2017). One common factor throughout these studies is stigma, which is known to be associated with less favorable attitudes toward seeking help (Moreland et al., 2018). However, researchers have not explored how stigma and attitudes might influence intentions to seek counseling and actual help-seeking behaviors in student-athletes. Additionally, there is a dearth of research identifying the topics for which student-athletes are most willing to seek help. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to investigate predictors of mental …

Elbow Injury Prevention In Youth Dominican Baseball Players: A Training Intervention Pilot Study, Chelsey Erbaugh Franz, Dawn Hall-Bibb, Myra Stockdale, Aliya Thompson, Bailey Biggs
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background: Research suggests deficits in shoulder and elbow strength and flexibility may explain the role of elbow injuries in overhead athletes, specifically ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury in baseball players. Significant damage to this ligament typically requires operative care for continued activity in the sport. Several studies have demonstrated the success of rehabilitation programs post-surgery; however, few studies have examined the role of UCL injury prevention programs. A recognized upper extremity (UE) injury prevention method is the Thrower’s Ten Program. This program may create elbow stability when pitching and throwing, theoretically reducing the risk of UCL injury. Purpose: The purpose …

Sight-Seeing In School: Visual Technology, Virtual Experience, And World Citizenship In American Education, 1900-1930, Katie Day Good
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This article argues that the influx of media technologies into schools between 1900 and 1930 was facilitated by an emergent techno-utopian rhetoric in American culture that placed new social value on the acquisition of virtual and worldly experience. Against a backdrop of rising immigration, global visual culture, and American intervention in foreign affairs, the burgeoning educational technology industry-including producers of stereographs, slides, and National Geographic magazine-made inroads into schools by endowing technology with the capacity to "bring the world to the pupil" and serve as a substitute for travel. Aligning with progressive reformers, boosters of early educational technology highlighted these …

The tick species Dermacentor andersoni and Dermacentor variabilis are known vectors of pathogens. One such pathogen is the bacteria Rickettsia rickettsii, which causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The detection of this bacterium in ticks at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR) indicates a potential risk to human health. In order to follow up on this discovery, we had two separate objectives. First we developed a high resolution predictive map for Dermacentor spp. distribution across the public use area of TNWR. To do so, 50m transects (27 in total) were established across the public use area. Ticks were collected weekly within the …

Community College Faculty's Attitudes And Self-Efficacy With Literacy Instruction In The Disciplines, Kristen H. Gregory, Linda Bol, Thomas Bean, Tony Perez
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Many community college students are entering college-level courses underprepared for the literacy skills required to be successful. Faculty are considered experts in their disciplines, yet are often not trained in pedagogy and literacy instruction (Furco & Moely, 2012; Moje, 2008; Tsui, 2002). We developed a questionnaire to measure faculty's (n = 231) perceptions of their role, level of self-efficacy, and classroom practice in regard to discipline- specific literacy instruction. We analyzed data using exploratory factor analysis, t-tests, and analysis of variance. The findings show that faculty have marginally positive perceptions and self-efficacy regarding incorporating discipline-specific literacy instruction in their courses. …
