Dependent Care Fsas Work For Low- To Moderate-Income Families: 5 Action Steps For Policymakers, Sophia Fox-Dichter, Ellen Frank-Miller, Sloane Wolter

Social Policy Institute Research

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (DCFSAs) can help workers save money on child care expenses by using pre-tax dollars, but few employees actually use the accounts, particularly low- to moderate-income (LMI) employees, because:

• DCFSAs are difficult to understand; figuring out if they are possible to use and worth the trouble is a complex task for families.

• Families face a “double-hit” if they use the accounts – they have to set aside pre-tax dollars for child care expenses and then pay out-of-pocket before getting reimbursed.

• Using a DCFSA may require certainty about a year’s worth of child care …

Employees financial wellness program (EFWPs) are gaining in popularity as a strategy to address workers' financial challenges and goals beyond offering health and retirement benefits. Most workers say they are stressed about their finances1 and a third are less productive at work because of this stress.2 Although employers are increasingly interested in offering EFWPs, little research has been conducted concerning these workplace financial products and services.

Student’S Attitudes Toward Academic Dishonesty: An Exploration, David J. Burns, Randy S. Stuart, Anne Heineman Batory, Stephen S. Batory

AMTP Proceedings 2019

Academic dishonesty in college/university classrooms is widely recognized as a serious problem (Offstein and Chory 2017). Studies indicate that academic dishonesty is pervasive. Klein, Levenburg, McKendall, and Mothersell (2007), report 40-80 percent of college students are involved in academic dishonesty, whereas McCabe, Butterfield, and Treviňo (2012), report 65-87 percent involvement. Studies also report that cheating activity is increasing (Forsha 2017; Pérez-Peňa 2012), facilitated by increasing levels of tolerance (where instances of academic dishonesty are overlooked by classroom instructors (Coren 2011)), and advances in technology (Best and Shirley 2018). Consequently, academic dishonesty has become an increasingly important area of concern and, …

Market Orientation Across Firm Performance Levels; Manager, Salesperson, And Customer Viewpoints, Thomas L. Powers, Dawn B. Valentine Jan 2019

Market Orientation Across Firm Performance Levels; Manager, Salesperson, And Customer Viewpoints, Thomas L. Powers, Dawn B. Valentine

AMTP Proceedings 2019

Market orientation and its impact on firm performance has been a topic of research interest for many years, yet research is still needed to extend this stream of literature in two important areas. Previous research has largely examined a company management perspective of market orientation, excluding the perspective of front line personnel, and that of customers. In addition, performance has been primarily assessed using subjective perceptions as opposed to objective measures. This study is intended to extend the literature beyond these traditional perspectives by examining market orientation from three different viewpoints including managers, salespeople, and customers as it relates to …

Use Of Ethnic/Culturally Based Incongruent Cues In Informational Versus Transformational Advertising, Neleen Leslie Jan 2019

Use Of Ethnic/Culturally Based Incongruent Cues In Informational Versus Transformational Advertising, Neleen Leslie

AMTP Proceedings 2019

This study compares the relative effectiveness in the use of culturally incongruent cues in informational and transformational advertising. A case study was done to explore the extent to which ethnic/ culturally incongruent cues are used in advertising in informational and transformational advertising and to compare the effectiveness of these ads between the two advertising forms. The study sought to address two questions: (1) To what extent are ethnic/culturally incongruent cues used in informational or transformational advertising? and (2): Is the use of culturally incongruent cues more effective for informational or transformational ads?

A content analysis approach was used to extract …

Global Awareness Of Marketing Students, Michael Latta Jan 2019

Global Awareness Of Marketing Students, Michael Latta

AMTP Proceedings 2019

Undergraduate and MBA Marketing programs typically include education goals such as:

“To prepare students for a changing domestic and global business environment characterized by organizational and cultural values, diversity, opportunity, and growth.”

They also include learning objectives such as:

“Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to think strategically about the global business environment.”

Presumably this approach to educating undergraduate and MBA students will prepare them to become ‘global citizens.’ The question may be asked about what undergraduate and MBA marketing students know about changes in global extreme poverty, education access for women around the world, and number of …

Dynamics Of Business Decision Making: Understanding The Role Of Emotions, Nikolina Koporcic, Miika Nietola Jan 2019

Dynamics Of Business Decision Making: Understanding The Role Of Emotions, Nikolina Koporcic, Miika Nietola

AMTP Proceedings 2019

In recent years, there has been a need for deeper understanding of the cumulating knowledge in different science disciplines about human emotions in decision making. Indeed, many traditional economic theories operate with the preconception of utility maximization, which partly contradicts with the recent findings in behavioral economics and neurosciences. In other words, science has shown that we can make suboptimal business decisions under the influence of changing emotional states. Moreover, traditional economic literature has often highlighted the strict division between rational decision making and the effective dimensions of the human mind. This conceptual article therefore challenges these conceptions by exploring …

The Fall Of Sears From Within: How Customer Sentiments Refuted Retail Capital And Authority, Michael D. Harris, Ismet Anitsal, Melek Meral Anitsal Jan 2019

The Fall Of Sears From Within: How Customer Sentiments Refuted Retail Capital And Authority, Michael D. Harris, Ismet Anitsal, Melek Meral Anitsal

AMTP Proceedings 2019

This research aims to understand the relationship between Sears Holdings Corporation and its customers, while exploiting feedback from customers to identify reasons for Sears’ decline. The problem statement is dependent on identifying aspects that affect consumer behavior most and linking a connection to the increased number of dissatisfied Sears’ customers. In order to analyze this phenomenon, customer attitudes were compiled over the key four years of Sears history using a customer sentiment analysis. This empirical method of research was chosen because of the large impact that consumer sentiments have on spending, allowing the development of both internal and external views …

The Twelve Beneficiaries Of Legalized Sports Betting: An Exploratory Assessment, Sam Fullerton, Michael Mccall, Ronald Dick Jan 2019

The Twelve Beneficiaries Of Legalized Sports Betting: An Exploratory Assessment, Sam Fullerton, Michael Mccall, Ronald Dick

AMTP Proceedings 2019

The 2018 ruling by the United States Supreme Court essentially legalized sports betting across the nation. Prior to that ruling, sports books were restricted by virtue of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). But with that landmark 6-3 decision, the opportunity door for sports betting has been opened for all 50 states. This paper focuses on two considerations regarding the opening of that door. Who are the potential beneficiaries and what benefits might they derive? A review of the literature identified twelve beneficiaries; among these beneficiaries are the teams, organizations, fans, sponsors, bettors, and society-in-general. The majority of …

The Dual-Mediation Effect Of Perceived Accuracy And Perceived Connectedness On Consumer Attitude Toward Social Network Advertising, Tao-Sheng Chiu, Kai-Yu Wang, Wen-Hai Chih, Jaime Ortiz, Ying-Ching Lin Jan 2019

The Dual-Mediation Effect Of Perceived Accuracy And Perceived Connectedness On Consumer Attitude Toward Social Network Advertising, Tao-Sheng Chiu, Kai-Yu Wang, Wen-Hai Chih, Jaime Ortiz, Ying-Ching Lin

AMTP Proceedings 2019

Despite the importance of social media advertising, few studies have investigated the factors that influence its effectiveness (Jung, Shim, Jin, and Khang 2016). Because advertising on social media is a relatively new phenomenon (Okazaki and Taylor 2013), several studies are exploratory in nature and lack a solid theoretical framework (e.g., Campbell, Pitt, Parent, and Berthon 2011; Pehlivan, Sarican, and Berthon 2011; Sashittal, Sriramachandramurthy, and Hodis 2012; Waters and Jones 2011). For this reason, the present study examines the factors affecting consumers’ attitudes toward advertisements they view on social media.

This paper draws on the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model to investigate the …

The For-Profit Prison As Social Enterprise: Problems With Classification And Ethical Assessment, Karen Barbee, Stephen A. Lemay Jan 2019

The For-Profit Prison As Social Enterprise: Problems With Classification And Ethical Assessment, Karen Barbee, Stephen A. Lemay

AMTP Proceedings 2019

This article explores the problems presented to taxonomies and definitions of social enterprise by a specific kind of organization, for-profit prisons. While these organizations are often and rightly criticized for their performance, they are fundamentally social enterprises by many of the definitions and taxonomies offered in the literature. This analysis uses a naïve matrix for classifying social enterprise to outline the problems created by these ethically and socially challenged organizations.

Bridging The Gap Between Public Opinion Research And Consumer Marketing Research: Insights Into U.S. Shoppers Of Organic Foods, Marilena O. Vilceanu, Olivia Grasso, Kristine Johnson Jan 2019

Bridging The Gap Between Public Opinion Research And Consumer Marketing Research: Insights Into U.S. Shoppers Of Organic Foods, Marilena O. Vilceanu, Olivia Grasso, Kristine Johnson

AMTP Proceedings 2019

The primary goal of this study embraces Hughner and team’s (2007) directive to focus new research on the growing segment of occasional consumers of organic and natural foods, rather than limit the search for consumer insights to the small, elitist groups of deeply committed consumers. Research questions address the demographics, attitudinal, and behavioral characteristics that identify organic foods as a premium product. Primary recommendations for marketing practitioners include focusing on higher income consumers, especially married individuals, who live in highly populated areas; creating a pleasant shopping experience; promoting non-food related organic items, and investing in brand presence and salience.

“Tipping Required”: Development Of A Model To Understand Customer Reactions To Non-Voluntary Tipping Systems, Ismail Karabas, Jeff Joireman Jan 2019

“Tipping Required”: Development Of A Model To Understand Customer Reactions To Non-Voluntary Tipping Systems, Ismail Karabas, Jeff Joireman

AMTP Proceedings 2019

This paper examines customer response to non-voluntary tipping systems as an emerging trend in the servicescape. A non-voluntary tipping system is a form of service inclusive pricing (e.g., increasing menu prices, automatically charging a percentage of tip on the final bill regardless of table size). Across four experiments, results suggest that non-voluntary tipping leads to higher customer anger than voluntary tipping, which leads to lower return intentions. The results also show a larger difference in customer response (customer anger, return intentions) to non-voluntary and voluntary tipping systems under high service quality than low service quality. The mediating role of the …

User Engagement Associated With Web-Intervention Features To Attain Clinically Meaningful Weight Loss And Weight Maintenance In Rural Women, Patricia A. Hageman, Joseph E. Mroz, Michael A. Yoerger, Carol H. Pullen Jan 2019

User Engagement Associated With Web-Intervention Features To Attain Clinically Meaningful Weight Loss And Weight Maintenance In Rural Women, Patricia A. Hageman, Joseph E. Mroz, Michael A. Yoerger, Carol H. Pullen

Journal Articles: Physical Therapy

Objective: Purely web-based weight loss and weight-loss maintenance interventions show promise to influence behavior change. Yet, little is known about user engagement with features of web-based interventions that predict clinically meaningful weight loss (≥5% bodyweight loss). This study examines level of website feature engagement with the likelihood of attaining ≥5% bodyweight loss after 6 and 18 months participation in a web-based intervention, among rural women at high risk of obesity-related diseases and disability.

Methods: In this secondary analysis of clinical trial data of 201 rural women, we examined weight change and user engagement, measured as clicks on specific web-based intervention …

Journal Articles: Munroe-Meyer Institute

BACKGROUND: The use of immunodeficient mice transplanted with human hematopoietic stem cells is an accepted approach to study human-specific infectious diseases such as HIV-1 and to investigate multiple aspects of human immune system development. However, mouse and human are different in sialylation patterns of proteins due to evolutionary mutations of the CMP-N-acetylneuraminic acid hydroxylase (CMAH) gene that prevent formation of N-glycolylneuraminic acid from N-acetylneuraminic acid. How changes in the mouse glycoproteins' chemistry affect phenotype and function of transplanted human hematopoietic stem cells and mature human immune cells in the course of HIV-1 infection are not known.

RESULTS: We mutated mouse …

Reporting Quantitative Methods And Findings: Best Practices Fidelity In The Leisure Science Literature, Mat D. Duerden, Eric Keith Layland, Andrew Lacanienta, Camilla Hodge, Michael Goates, Michael B. Edwards

Faculty Publications

This article identified best practices for quantitative methods and results reporting and then evaluated leisure science articles’ adherence to them. A two-stage stratified sampling method identified 112 articles. A codebook was developed, and 26 universal codes addressing abstract, methods, and results were applied to each article to generate best practices scores (BPS). BPS ranged from 6 to 21 (M¼14.89, SD¼2.95). Articles were more likely to use best practices for abstract, sample selection, recruitment, statistics, and data analysis, and less likely for participant characteristics, instrumentation, and data collection procedures. Comparisons of BPS across journals identified significant differences.

To Link Or Not To Link? Multiple Team Membership And Unit Performance, Eean R. Crawford, Cody J. Reeves, Greg L. Stewart, Stacy L. Astrove

Faculty Publications

Multiple team membership is common in today’s team-based organizations, but little is known about its relationship with collective effectiveness across teams. We adopted a microfoundations framework utilizing existing individual- and team-level research to develop a higher-level perspective on multiple team membership’s relationship with performance of entire units of teams. We tested our predictions with data collected from 849 primary care units of the Veterans Health Administration serving over 4.2 million patients. In this context, we found multiple team membership is negatively associated with unit performance, and this negative relationship is exacerbated by task complexity.

Improving Behavioral Health Workforce Supply And Needs Estimates Using Active Surveillance Data, Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway, Li-Wu Chen, Kate Trout, David Palm, Marlene Deras, Zaeema Naveed

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies show that supply of behavioral health professionals in rural areas is inadequate to meet the need. Measuring shortage using licensure data on psychiatrists is a common approach. Although inexpensive, the licensure data have many limitations. An alternative is to implement an active surveillance system, which uses licensure data in addition to active data collection to obtain timely and detailed information.

METHODS: Nebraska Health Professions Tracking Service (HPTS) data were used to examine differences in workforce supply estimates between the passive (licensure data only) and active (HPTS data) surveillance systems. The impact of these differences on the designation …

Psychiatric Patients’ Perception Of Involvement In The Plan Of Care, Jaspal Kaur Gill Jan 2019

Psychiatric Patients’ Perception Of Involvement In The Plan Of Care, Jaspal Kaur Gill

Dissertations

Background: There is an increased need to actively engage and involve patients in their care planning in healthcare facilities including psychiatric facilities (Wills, Riefer, Schauer, & del Vecchio, 2011). There has been a growing interest in patient-centered care and patients’ involvement in their plan of care as it leads to positive healthcare outcomes and increased patient satisfaction. However, there is a lack of research on how psychiatric patients perceive their involvement in the care planning while they are admitted to an inpatient psychiatric facility.

Aim: The aim of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to explore patients’ perception …

Lived Experience After Surgery Among Hispanic Adults, Kimberly Sanchez Jan 2019

Lived Experience After Surgery Among Hispanic Adults, Kimberly Sanchez

Dissertations

Background: In 2010, more than 51.4 million procedures were performed in hospitals in the United States. Almost half of all patients had a surgical procedure prior to their hospital discharge and over 80% of patients experienced acute pain after surgery. When acute pain persists for two or more months after surgery, chronic pain develops, costing the United States up to $635 billion annually. Hispanics, in particular, disproportionately experience disparities in pain treatment as they are less likely to receive analgesics. Routine pain assessments conducted using instruments may be inaccurately capturing the pain experience of Hispanic adults. No research has …
