A Detection And Data Acquisition System For Precision Beta Decay Spectroscopy, Aaron P. Jezghani Jan 2019

A Detection And Data Acquisition System For Precision Beta Decay Spectroscopy, Aaron P. Jezghani

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Free neutron and nuclear beta decay spectroscopy serves as a robust laboratory for investigations of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Observables such as decay product angular correlations and energy spectra overconstrain the Standard Model and serve as a sensitive probe for Beyond the Standard Model physics. Improved measurement of these quantities is necessary to complement the TeV scale physics being conducted at the Large Hadron Collider. The UCNB, 45Ca, and Nab experiments aim to improve upon existing measurements of free neutron decay angular correlations and set new limits in the search for exotic couplings in beta decay. To …

Flexible Liminality Among The Tibetan Diaspora: Tibetan Exiles Adjusting Cultural Practices In Dharamsala, India And The United States, Sneha Thapa Jan 2019

Flexible Liminality Among The Tibetan Diaspora: Tibetan Exiles Adjusting Cultural Practices In Dharamsala, India And The United States, Sneha Thapa

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

In this dissertation, I investigate the characteristics and quality of liminality among the Tibetan exile community in Dharamsala, India, and the United States. I argue that the quality of their liminality defines this exile community’s ability to maneuver and voice their influence to geo-political community of states that surround them, all while within their liminal condition. The Tibetan exile people live as stateless foreigners in India but have a better standard of living and better opportunities to acquire transnational resources than their surrounding host community. In the U.S., Tibetan diaspora people live as asylum-seekers and naturalized Tibetan-Americans but have established …

Finding The Singing Spruce: Craft Labor, Global Forests, And Musical Instrument Makers In Appalachia, Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth Jan 2019

Finding The Singing Spruce: Craft Labor, Global Forests, And Musical Instrument Makers In Appalachia, Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

Musical instrument makers in the state of West Virginia in the United States pursue “singing,” lively instruments that capture ideals of musical tone and “re-enchant” their work and lives through relationships with craft materials and the forest landscape. Suitable tonewoods that grow in the region, such as red spruce (Picea rubens), intersect with makers’ desires to craft instruments in the style of famed makers such as the C.F. Martin Company and the Gibson Company as well as provide instruments imbued with a sense of place. While the demand for and symbolic import of instruments made with local wood …

Consuming Appalachia: An Archaeology Of Company Coal Towns, Zada Komara Jan 2019

Consuming Appalachia: An Archaeology Of Company Coal Towns, Zada Komara

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

Material culture is an understudied aspect of social life in Appalachian Studies, the multi- disciplinary investigation of social life in the Appalachian region. Historically, material culture in the region has been largely studied for its semiotic properties, decoded as a tangible symbol of “a region apart,” lagging behind the rest of America in terms of moral, mental, economic, and social development. Critical material studies from archaeology and other disciplines paint a different picture, however, and construct a region as American as any other. This study utilizes discourse analysis of material rhetoric about Appalachia and archaeological and oral historical data from …

The Wages Of Precarious Work: An Ethnography Of Upstate South Carolina’S Reserve Army Of The Laboring, Henry Bundy Jan 2019

The Wages Of Precarious Work: An Ethnography Of Upstate South Carolina’S Reserve Army Of The Laboring, Henry Bundy

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

The proliferation of precarious work represents a sea change in the opportunity structure of the new economies of the American South. As the role of the State has shifted from guarantor of rights and services to anxious custodian of economic liberalization, Americans have been enjoined to shoulder ever-larger shares of the responsibilities and risks associated with wage labor. As a result, the working poor have been left to weather the vicissitudes of the unfettered market with the increasingly paltry social membership guaranteed through waged employment. Among the risks now frequently assumed by individuals, are the responsibilities of health.

In the …

Making Experts: An Ethnographic Study Of “Makers” In Fablabs In Japan, Vaughn M. Krebs Jan 2019

Making Experts: An Ethnographic Study Of “Makers” In Fablabs In Japan, Vaughn M. Krebs

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

“Makers” around the world cohere in a digital and physical network of technology hobbyists. “Makers" are open-source hardware enthusiasts who use machines like 3D printers and laser cutters - manufacturing tools that have only recently become accessible to laypeople - to make things. “Makers" share a vision for a world where everyone would be able to make almost anything, supplanting top-down economic systems and channels of production. This ethnographic research examines a subset of the “maker” community: “makers” in “FabLabs” in Japan. These “FabLabs” are small workshops that house the machines that “makers” need and make them open to the …

Ecological Rationality: Fast-And-Frugal Heuristics For Managerial Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Shenghua Luan, Jochen Reb, Gerd Gigerenzer Jan 2019

Ecological Rationality: Fast-And-Frugal Heuristics For Managerial Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Shenghua Luan, Jochen Reb, Gerd Gigerenzer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Heuristics are often viewed as inferior to “rational” strategies that exhaustively search and process information. Introducing the theoretical perspective of ecological rationality, we challenge this view and argue that under conditions of uncertainty common to managerial decision making, managers can actually make better decisions using fast-and-frugal heuristics. Within the context of personnel selection, we show that a heuristic called Δ-inference can more accurately predict which of two job applicants would perform better in the future than logistic regression, a prototypical rational strategy. Using data from 236 applicants at an airline company, we demonstrate in Study 1 that despite searching less …

Situational Judgment Tests As Measures Of 21st Century Skills: Evidence Across Europe And Latin America, Christoph Herde, Filip Lievens, Emily G. Solberg, Harbaugh Jan L., Mark H. Strong, Gary J. Burkholder Jan 2019

Situational Judgment Tests As Measures Of 21st Century Skills: Evidence Across Europe And Latin America, Christoph Herde, Filip Lievens, Emily G. Solberg, Harbaugh Jan L., Mark H. Strong, Gary J. Burkholder

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Over the years, various governmental, employment, and academic organizations have identified a list of skills to successfully master the challenges of the 21st century. So far, an adequate assessment of these skills across countries has remained challenging. Limitations inherent in the use of self-reports (e.g., lack of self-insight, socially desirable responding, response style bias, reference group bias, etc.) have spurred on the search for methods that could complement or even substitute self-report inventories. Situational judgment tests (SJTs) have been proposed as one of the complements/alternatives to the traditional self-report inventories. SJTs are low-fidelity simulations that confront participants with multiple domain-relevant …

Adjustment Of Maximum Likelihood Method For Multivariate Fay-Herriot Model, Annop Angkunsit Jan 2019

Adjustment Of Maximum Likelihood Method For Multivariate Fay-Herriot Model, Annop Angkunsit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The most widely used area-level model in small area estimation is the Fay-Herriot model, proposed by Fay and Herriot. It was used first to estimate average per capita income for small places (population less than 1,000) of the USA. In the context of the Fay-Herriot model, the traditional method in obtaining estimation of the population mean is the empirical best linear unbiased prediction (EBLUP) estimator. The estimate can be expressed as a weighted sum of the direct survey estimator and regression estimator. One problem that has received attention is the estimation of variance of the area random effects in the …

First Order Integer-Valued Autoregressive Model With A Two-Parameter Generalized Poisson-Lindley Distribution, Suchiraporn Bunyaris

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In this study, we introduce the first order integer-valued autoregressive models for count data with the two-parameter generalized Poisson-Lindley distribution. The thinning operators considered in this study are the binomial and negative binomial thinning operators. Some important probabilistic and statistical properties such as moments, stationarity and autocorrelation functions are derived. Moreover, parameter estimations and numerical simulations to examine the constructed model are performed. Finally, applications of the models for real data sets are also discussed.

Argonaute 4 Promotes Genomic Methylation, Kanwalat Chalertpet Jan 2019

Argonaute 4 Promotes Genomic Methylation, Kanwalat Chalertpet

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) is the major small RNA-mediated epigenetic pathway in plants. Similar to genome and epigenome editing with the CRISPR-Cas9 system, RdDM is composed of a regulatory protein and a “guide” RNA (gRNA), which recruits the complex to specific genomic locations containing DNA sequences homologous to the RNA sequence. In humans, we found that Argonaute-4 (AGO4) colocalization has a strong correlation to promoter methylation of AGO4-binding genes. Here, we engineered cell-penetrating tagged oligoarginines (R9) tagged AGO4 (R9-AGO4) or xentry tagged AGO4 (X-AGO4) loaded with single guided-RNA (sgRNA) as a tool to specifically add methylation at genome locations where …

Serum Non-Coding Rna Levels As Potential Diagnostic And Prognostic Markers Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Pornpitra Pratedrat Jan 2019

Serum Non-Coding Rna Levels As Potential Diagnostic And Prognostic Markers Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Pornpitra Pratedrat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common type of liver cancers in the world. Most common cause of HCC is viral hepatitis B infection (HBV). That lead to HCC detection at late stage and be difficult for curative treatment. So, biomarkers for HCC are required to detect HCC efficiently. MicroRNAs and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a key role in tumorigenesis through many different mechanisms. Moreover, non-coding RNA can be released into body fluid. Hence purpose of this study is to investigate the level of miRNA and lncRNAs in serum as the used as potential biomarkers for HBV-HCC …

Enhanced Propagation Yield Of Influenza Viruses For Vaccine Production Through Cellular Micrornas Regulation, Suthat Saengchoowong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Annual influenza vaccination aims to prevent influenza virus infection thus reduce the incidence of infection and disease in humans. Nowadays, Madin–Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell culture-based system has been approved as an alternative for influenza vaccine production. Although cellular microRNAs may play an important role in controlling the replication of viruses, the interaction between human seasonal influenza viruses and host microRNAs has not been investigated in this permissive cell line. The primary objective of this study is to improve the yield of seasonal influenza virus (i.e. vaccine virus) production via manipulation of the host microRNAs. MDCK cells were infected with …

Angiogenic Effect Of Salt-Leached Thai Silk Fibroin Scaffolds With Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells, Tanapong Watchararot Jan 2019

Angiogenic Effect Of Salt-Leached Thai Silk Fibroin Scaffolds With Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells, Tanapong Watchararot

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Angiogenesis plays important role in tissue regeneration. Biomaterials that allow and promote angiogenesis are thus beneficial. Silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds are good candidates for angiogenesis activation because of the biodegradability, biocompatibility, and interaction of extracellular matrices. Human adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are also promising for tissue regeneration. This study thus aims to investigate the angiogenic potential of SF scaffolds with/without ADSCs on chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Firstly, the SF scaffolds were fabricated with a porosity of 77.34 ± 16.96% and a pore diameter of 513.95 µm. Then, ADSCs were seeded on SF scaffolds (SF-ADSC scaffolds) and placed on CAM on …
