Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: In recent decades, the prevalence of obesity in children has increased dramatically. This worldwide epidemic has important consequences, including psychiatric, psychological and psychosocial disorders in childhood and increased risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life. Treatment of obesity is difficult and children with excess weight are likely to become adults with obesity. These trends have led member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) to endorse a target of no increase in obesity in childhood by 2025.
Main body: Estimates of overweight in children aged under 5 years are available jointly from the United Nations Children's Fund …

Big “G” And Small “G”: The Variable Geometries Of Educational Governance In An Era Of Big Data, Tavis Jules Nov 2019

Big “G” And Small “G”: The Variable Geometries Of Educational Governance In An Era Of Big Data, Tavis Jules

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution and the intelligent economy, this conceptual chapter explores the evolution of educational governance from one based on governing by numbers and evidence-based governance to one constituted around governance by data or data-based educational governance. With the rise of markets and networks in education, Big Data, machine data, high-dimension data, open data, and dark data have consequences for the governance of national educational systems. In doing so, it draws attention to the rise of the algorithmization and computerization of educational policy-making. The author uses the concept of “blitzscaling”, aided by the conceptual framing …

Cancer-Related Risk Behaviors And Screening Intention Among Recreational Sport Athletes, Aldenise P. Ewing Nov 2019

Cancer-Related Risk Behaviors And Screening Intention Among Recreational Sport Athletes, Aldenise P. Ewing

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The recreational sports arena provides a venue for young adults to increase physical activity and engage in a socially supportive environment. These are both important ways to decrease the risk for chronic diseases. It is assumed that physically active individuals lead healthier lifestyles and are more attuned to their long-term health needs. Recreational sport athletes also engage in risks for adverse cancer outcomes through increased sun exposure, intake of unhealthy diets, and recreational tobacco and alcohol use. It was of interest to assess cancer-related risk factors, cancer knowledge, and theory of planned behavior constructs in this group.

This study involved …

A New Framing Of Social Policies: Why, What And How?, Hoda Rashad Nov 2019

A New Framing Of Social Policies: Why, What And How?, Hoda Rashad

Faculty Journal Articles

This issue paper argues for the need for governance and public policy reforms that are anchored on well-being equity, and that adopt fairness in the social patterns of well-being as a measure of development and social success. Well-being equity is defined as: “The absence of systematic, unnecessary and preventable differences in well-being across groups in society classified according to a social stratum”. The definition recognizes that not all social differences in well-being are inequitable. The equity definition is confined to differences that are shaped by causes that are not distributed fairly across social groups. A clear example of inequity is …

Augmenting Education: Ethical Considerations For Incorporating Artificial Intelligence In Education, Dana Remian Nov 2019

Augmenting Education: Ethical Considerations For Incorporating Artificial Intelligence In Education, Dana Remian

Instructional Design Capstones Collection

Artificial intelligence (AI) has existed in theory and practice for decades, but applications have been relatively limited in most domains. Recent developments in AI and computing have placed AI-enhanced applications in various industries and a growing number of consumer products. AI platforms and services aimed at enhancing educational outcomes and taking over administrative tasks are becoming more prevalent and appearing in more and more classrooms and offices. Conversations about the disruption and ethical concerns created by AI are occurring in many fields. The development of the technology threatens to outpace academic discussion of its utility and pitfalls in education, however. …

Concerns And Considerations In Mental Health Practices With Older Culturally Deaf Adults, David M. Feldman Nov 2019

Concerns And Considerations In Mental Health Practices With Older Culturally Deaf Adults, David M. Feldman

JADARA

The elderly population in America is expected to more than double over the next half century. Consequently, the corresponding growth of the culturally Deaf' elderly population becomes important to examine. Because this population is a subgroup of both the hearing elderly and culturally Deaf populations, the expectation is that mental health professionals working with Deaf elderly clients will have specific concerns and will behave in ways that are specific to this population. Little is known, however, about the issues that challenge mental health professionals working with elderly Deaf clients. At present, mental health professions across all fields are unprepared to …

Perceptions Of Deafness Among African American Caretakers, Valerie Borum Nov 2019

Perceptions Of Deafness Among African American Caretakers, Valerie Borum

JADARA

Although deafness does not eliminate membership in racial, ethnic, linguistic, or cultural groups, American, Anglo-Saxon, middle-class families, whose primary language is Standard English, have been the reference point in defining deafness. Research related to cultural differences in perceptions and responses to deafness has been scant. Children of color are largely at-risk for hearing loss due to disproportionate rates of poverty. The purpose of the present study was to examine the perceptions and responses to deafness among African American hearing families with deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Specifically, this study addressed African American hearing caretakers’ etiological conceptions of deafness, perceptions of deaf …

Interpreting For Vocational Rehabilitation Consumers: An Emerging Specialty, Diane Currie Richardson, Christine Marble

JADARA

This article discusses the role of an interpreter working with vocational rehabilitation consumers in an occupational context with or without a job coach. Therapy Using Interpreters: Questions On The Use Of Interpreters In Therapeutic Settings For Monolingual Therapists, Steven Hamerdinger, Ben Karlin

JADARA

The use of sign language interpreters in mental health is a subject that has not received a great deal of attention in the literature in recent years. It is critical that interpreters be competent, but not much attention has been paid to other critical elements in the therapeutic triad, specifically what is required of clinicians in order to make therapy using interpreters work. This article explores some of those issues and makes specific recommendations regarding how it maximize effectiveness of this approach to bridging the gap between the need for mental health services and the supply of clinicians who are …

The purpose is to improve awareness among educators and juvenile Justice professionals of …
