Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background According to embryological and anatomical connection between the cochlea and vestibular end-organs, children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) may exhibit abnormalities of vestibular and balance function. Documentation of vestibular dysfunction in children with SNHL has a long and rich history indicating that 20–70% of children with SNHL demonstrate an element of vestibular end-organ dysfunction. Vestibular dysfunction was proved to correlate with severity of cochlear loss in many research works. Aim of the work To assess normative data of sensory organization test (SOT) and head shaking (HS) test according to age, weight, and height of children in control group and …

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background Aneurysmal subarach noid hemorrhage (aSAH) represents roughly 6–8% of all stroke types. Almost 70% of patients develop angiographic vasospasm, and 30% of them will have delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI). An 'omic signature' could combine genetic, proteomic, and metabolomic phenotypes into an accurate predictive model. Haptoglobin (Hp) genotypes could be used to stratify risk of resulting cerebral vasospasm (CV) and DCI, to give prognostic data dependent on distributed result probabilities, and to develop novel medications dependent on individual pathophysiological models. Objective This research intends to investigate the clinical and radiological factors as indicators for risk of development of CV after …

The newly freed slaves had almost nothing—no money, no education, and no strong social institutions, including marriage which had often been prohibited, rarely supported by slaveholders. Discrimination was rampant and government was often the worst discriminator. Yet, somehow, they triumphed. They built marriages that were actually slightly more stable than those of white families. The newly free went from virtually zero literacy to at least 50% literacy in a generation. They worked incredibly hard and increased their income about one third faster than white workers. The newly free, anchored in their strong faith, were amazingly forgiving and optimistic. Economics Professor …

Socioeconomic Predictors Of Visitor Harassment: Why Knowing Vendor Migration Patterns Is Important, Annmarie Nicely, Aiden Selvia
Visitor Harassment Research Unit Special Papers
Trader harassment (TH) of visitors is a widespread problem around the world, but little is known about the phenomenon’s predictors. Hence, the goal of the present study was to determine whether national socioeconomic measures could predict TH intensity levels at destinations. To achieve this, data from primary and secondary sources were gathered and analyzed using regression analysis. No predictors were found, but significant correlations were discovered. Of note, significant correlations were found between TH frequency and the national socioeconomic measures of poverty, income disparity, school life expectancy in years, and percentage of population with improved sanitation facilities. However, significant correlations …

EFCO (carbon monoxide) and EFCH4 (methane) are similar to 12 %15 % and similar to …
The Meaning Of High-Quality Nursing Care Derived From King's Interacting Systems, Mary E. Gunther
The Meaning Of High-Quality Nursing Care Derived From King's Interacting Systems, Mary E. Gunther
Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to conceptualize quality within a framework unique to nursing, King's Interacting Systems. Clarification of the concept within the metaparadigm and a nursing conceptual framework provides understanding of the domain and scope of nursing for the ultimate benefit of the patient. Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics involves a dialogical interaction between the whole and parts of the text and between the horizons of the text and the interpreter. King's (1981) A theory for nursing: Systems, concepts, process was approached with the question: What are the characteristics of high-quality nursing care?

Testing A Decision Making Model For Nursing, Daniel Bruce Coble
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to test a decision making model for nursing developed in a previous qualitative study. Concepts in the decision making model were creativity, experience, leadership, education, risk taking, and informatics. The Chinese philosophy of Cosmogony and chaos theory provided the theoretical framework for the model. Analysis of Decision Making in Nursing (ADMN), a tool developed for this study, incorporated a bipolar scale of 81 items. Pilot testing indicated adequate reliability and validity of the ADMN.
Academic Achievement In Children With New-Onset Seizures Or Asthma, Angela Marie Mcnelis
Academic Achievement In Children With New-Onset Seizures Or Asthma, Angela Marie Mcnelis
Dissertations
It has long been recognized that children with epilepsy have more learning difficulties in school than either children without seizures or children with other chronic disorders, such as asthma. Problems such as repeating a grade, receiving special services, and scoring poorly on standardized achievement tests are over-represented in children with epilepsy. Factors that lead to problems with academic underachievement are not well understood. Primary purposes of the study were to examine change in academic achievement over a 12-month period and to identify factors related to achievement in children with new-onset seizures. A secondary purpose was to examine differences in academic …
Preparation And Characterization Of Collagen-Hydroxyapatite-Based Composites For Biomedical Applications, Le Yu
Doctoral Dissertations
Collagen, the most abundant protein, and hydroxyapatite, the main component in natural bone, are usually used as a biomimetic composite in many biomedical applications due to their excellent biocompatibility, great biodegradability, and flexible structural and compositional alterability. In this dissertation, a systematic study was conducted to design, develop and characterize collagen-hydroxyapatite-based (Col-HA-based) composite materials and explore their wide biomedical applications.
First, the biomeralization mechanism of collagen was investigated. The degree of intrafibrillar mineralization of Col-HA fibrils was enhanced by the employment of carboxyl-rich brushlike polymers, which is believed to be capable of replicating the sequestration functions of non-collagenous proteins (NCPs) …

Benchmarking Nurse Sensitive Quality Patient Outcomes Across The Continuum Of Care, Carla G. Clark
Dissertations
The impact health care delivery changes have on nursing and subsequently on the health of individuals, families, and the community are unknown to the nursing profession as well as the public. Delineation of patient outcomes sensitive to nursing care and their benchmarks would enable the nursing profession to evaluate system changes being implemented. Establishing targets for patient outcomes will provide facilities with benchmarks to measure themselves against. The purposes of this study were first, to identify if the nurse sensitive patient outcomes identified by the AAN expert panel are appropriate and second, to establish benchmarks for these outcomes that are …

Background: Moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) in the first 2 years of life can impair linear growth. We sought to determine risk factors for linear growth faltering and to build a clinical prediction tool to identify children most likely to experience growth faltering following an episode of MSD.
Methods: Using data from the Global Enteric Multicenter Study of children 0-23 months old presenting with MSD in Africa and Asia, we performed log-binomial regression to determine clinical and sociodemographic factors associated with severe linear growth faltering (loss of ≥ 0.5 length-for-age z-score [LAZ]). Linear regression was used to estimate associations with ΔLAZ. A …

Students, Universities And Employers: Why We All Win When We Promote Social Justice Through Sotl, Jeannette M. Wade, Anderson Bean, Stephanie Teixeira-Poit
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This essay discusses the benefits of promoting social justice through the scholarship of teaching and learning. We start by highlighting the prevalence of injustices and discrimination (racism, sexism, homophobia, heteronormativity) experienced on college campuses in the US. We go on to highlight the (1) outcomes associated with social justice centered teaching and learning activities and (2) ways this approach makes students more valuable to potential employers upon graduation. We conclude with a call for campus wide promotion of social justice as both micro (classroom) and macro (university) level interventions are needed to truly create equitable learning spaces.

Creating Learning Communities Through Flipped Classes: A Challenge, An Answer, Or An Opportunity For Teaching Strategic Human Resource Management?, Nadeera Ranabahu, Shamika Almeida
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Teaching strategic human resource management to postgraduate students is becoming a challenge in countries like Australia, particularly due to the students undertaking postgraduate studies without relevant professional work experience. To address this, we used flipped teaching and learning activities and attempted to develop a learning community among multi-cultural postgraduate students who had no (or minimal) professional work experience. Using duoethnographic technique, we recorded our observations and reflections over three semesters in teaching strategic human resource management at postgraduate level in an Australian University. Our reflections demonstrate that community-based learning environment allows students without any relevant work experience to put strategic …
Do Professions Represent Competence For Entry-To-Practice In Similar Ways? An Exploration Of Competence Frameworks Through Document Analysis, Jessica V. Rich
Do Professions Represent Competence For Entry-To-Practice In Similar Ways? An Exploration Of Competence Frameworks Through Document Analysis, Jessica V. Rich
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Professional accrediting and regulating bodies are increasingly trying to delineate the knowledge and skills needed for entry-to-practice for quality assurance and international labor mobility. The purpose of this study was to com-pare how professions describe and represent competence. Current, publicly accessible Canadian entry-to-practice competence frameworks for ten professions (Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Psychology, Social Work, Teaching, Engineering, Law, and Planning) were analyzed through content and inductive thematic analysis. Findings revealed that although professions describe similar core competencies across technical and intrinsic domains, systematic differences exist in the architectures of the frameworks. Professions with ‘meta-competencies’ describe competence as being more …

Integrating The Five Practices Of Exemplary Leadership Model Into Entrepreneurship Education, Eduardo R. Díaz, Celsa G. Sánchez-Vélez, Lorena Santana-Serrano
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Entrepreneurship educators can assess their students by focusing on leadership self-efficacy dimensions that align with desirable entrepreneurship behaviors. To support this claim, we used the Student Leadership Practices Inventory (S-LPI) to survey a group of 46 undergraduate students in Mexico and 49 undergraduate students in Spain that were involved in entrepreneurship education programs. Independent samples t-tests show statistically significant differences between the two groups. We also compared the whole sample in terms of gender and found no differences. We propose that educators integrate Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership model into de design and assessment of their curricular and co-curricular entrepreneurship …
