Background Dysfunctional autophagy is implicated in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathogenesis. The alterations in the expression of many autophagy related genes (ATGs) have been reported in AD brains; however, the disparity of the changes confounds the role of autophagy in AD. Methods To further understand the autophagy alteration in AD brains, we analyzed transcriptomic (RNAseq) datasets of several brain regions (BA10, BA22, BA36 and BA44 in 223 patients compared to 59 healthy controls) and measured the expression of 130 ATGs. We used autophagy-deficient mouse models to assess the impact of the identified ATGs depletion on memory, autophagic activity and amyloid-beta (A …

During walking, uneven terrain alters the action of the ground reaction force from stride to stride. The extent to which such environmental inconsistencies are withstood may be revealed by the regulation of whole-body angular momentum (L) during walking. L quantifies the balance of momenta of the body segments (thigh, trunk, etc.) about their combined center of mass, and remains close to zero during level walking. A failure to constrain L has been linked to falls. The aim of this study was to explore the ability of young adults to orchestrate their movement on uneven terrain, illustrated by the …

In reliance on Qualcomm’s FRAND promises, key SSOs incorporated its technologies into wireless standards. Qualcomm takes the position that its patented technologies are essential to those standards and, therefore, that any firm making or selling a standard-compliant product infringes its patents. As a result, the SSOs’ incorporation of Qualcomm’s patented technologies into wireless standards created a huge market for licenses to Qualcomm’s SEPs.
The district court held that Qualcomm used its chipset monopolies, not only to extract the high chip-set prices to which it was entitled, but also to perpetuate those monopolies by disadvantaging rival chip-makers and raising entry barriers. …

Improved Understanding Of Trends, Variations, And Causes Of Atmospheric Aerosols Using Ground Measurements, Satellite Observations, And Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling, Xueke Li
Doctoral Dissertations
A good understanding of trends, variations, and causes of atmospheric aerosols is vital to quantifying the role of air quality in climate change and health concerns and for informing relevant regulatory policies. This thesis presents four projects that exploit a range of observational data and modeling tools to characterize and interpret aerosol dynamics and its potential determinates.
An econometric model is implemented to identify aerosol variations, predictions, and the driving forces using six sites spreading across North America and East Asia during 2003–2015. Regional differences caused by impacts of climatology and land cover types are observed. Statistical validation of time …
Early Childhood Intervention Teachers' Beliefs And Use Of Peer Social Interaction Interventions, Elizabeth Howe
Early Childhood Intervention Teachers' Beliefs And Use Of Peer Social Interaction Interventions, Elizabeth Howe
Doctoral Dissertations
Teachers’ ability to facilitate social interactions between children in the early childhood classroom is necessary for the development of social competence in all children, including those with disabilities. Peer social interaction interventions are a group of interventions to promote social engagement by focusing on the reciprocal social exchanges between children with and without disabilities. However, the literature base around teachers’ use of peer social interaction interventions indicates teachers use these practices infrequently and their use is related to their beliefs about the acceptability and feasibility of the interventions. This study validates prior research related to teachers’ beliefs and use of …

Case Presentation On Urinary Bladder Cancer And Cysto-Prostatectomy, Tetiana Soloviova
Publications and Research
Patients who have invasive bladder cancer (spread to different tissues and organs) may need to have a radical cystectomy type of surgery. In male patients, the surgeon usually removes the prostate and seminal vesicles in addition to the bladder, parts of the ureters, and lymph nodes (Nicholson, 2017, ¶ 1)
In our case a reconstructive surgery followed right after removing of the bladder and prostate gland. A different way of urine to be stored and passed from the patient’s body was created by the surgeon. A part of small intestine was used to make up a reservoir that will serve …

Building energy need simulations are usually performed using input files that contain information about the averaged weather data based on historical patterns. Therefore, the simulations performed are not able to provide information about possible future scenarios due to climate change. In this work, future trends of building energy demands due to the climate change across Europe were studied by comparing three time steps (present, 2050, and -2080) in three different European cities, characterized by different Köppen-Geiger climatic classes. A residential building with modern architectural features was taken into consideration for the simulations. Future climate conditions were reached by applying the …

Puff Puff Pass The Legislation: A Comparison Of E-Cigarette Regulations Across Borders, Rachel E. Zarrabi
Puff Puff Pass The Legislation: A Comparison Of E-Cigarette Regulations Across Borders, Rachel E. Zarrabi
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
This comment explores the types of legislation, approaches to regulating e-cigarettes, and analyzes whether the FDA’s campaign and current regulations are effective. So far, it appears that the United States is ahead of the game with its new, aggressive proposal for regulating e-cigarettes. The FDA is standing against the companies and products that target youthful consumers. Most countries acknowledge the gaps in current scientific research regarding the long-term health risks of vaping, and some are waiting to take a legislative stance until it is clearer which side of the health line e-cigarettes fall. Section II of this comment discusses the …

Beauty Shouldn’T Cause Pain: A Makeover Proposal For The Fda’S Cosmetics Regulation, Lauren Jacobs
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
The American cosmetics industry is not required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct pre-market safety assessments of cosmetics. The FDA only reviews personal care products when people voluntarily report problems. Further, companies continue to test animals for cosmetics, despite the FDA’s recommendation that manufacturers seek more humane and accurate testing. Although the FDA does not require animal testing for product safety or premarket approval, the United States is one of the largest users of laboratory animals for product testing. There are two pending pieces of legislation, which if passed would be the first acts of cosmetic regulation …

The Need For A Central Panel Approach To Administrative Adjudication: Pros, Cons, And Selected Practices, Malcolm C. Rich, Alison C. Goldstein
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
The goal of this report is to document the growth of the central panel movement that has now emerged in a majority of states. This research is designed to provide data-informed recommendations to states and municipalities considering the adoption of a central panel system or the enlargement of the jurisdiction encompassed by an existing central panel as well as to states considering the adoption of a more final decision-making authority for their central panel ALJs. The work is also intended to inform the debate over whether the central panel approach is something that the federal government should consider. This research …

Cyber Security: China And Russia's Erosion Of 21st Century United States' Hegemony, Cyril K. Yancey
McNair Scholars Research Journal
With Russia and China emerging as challengers to U.S. hegemony, the use of cyber warfare could tilt the current balance of power in either of their favors. Using various methods, hackers can acquire sensitive information and destroy online infrastructures. In the development of cyber warfare, China has become a seasoned veteran with computer virus operations dating back to 199714. Russia has emerged as a cyber aggressor, as seen in Russia’s cyber attacks on several countries in the last decade. This paper argues that, with the growth of foreign cyber technology, the probability of cyberspace being used as a …

Veterans' Path To Reintegration, Anthony D. Terry
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Military service members transitioning to civilian life in general, and college specifically, may experience significant difficulty losing their individual identity as a service member. Past research has shown that there are a number of challenges in transitioning, including finding a home, reintegrating with family, and dealing with new disabilities (Brunger, Serrato, & Ogden, 2013). This project reviewed how veterans’ sense of identity can change throughout the process of reintegration into civilian life and the problems that surround this change, both for veterans and their families. Specific attention was directed to a successful veteran transition to college and strategies for facilitating …
The Impact Of Mentoring School-Aged Youth Facing Challenges In School, Brianna M. Jones
The Impact Of Mentoring School-Aged Youth Facing Challenges In School, Brianna M. Jones
McNair Scholars Research Journal
According to Owings (1988), the term “at-risk” refers to a student who is more likely to fail in school based on factors such as low academic achievement, attendance, or behavioral issues, however other factors place students at-risk, such as substance abuse, violence, trauma, and involvement with the criminal justice system. This literature review examines the impact of mentoring as an intervention to support students who are facing academic, social, or emotional challenges in school. These students may be at greater risk of entering the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP). There is a gap in the literature on how mentoring programs can promote …

The Association Of Breastfeeding Practices And Postpartum Depression Risk, Christine Toledo
Open Access Dissertations
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant maternal health problem afflicting nearly 800,000 new mothers in the United States every year. Mothers suffering from PPD endure feelings of sadness, anxiety, extreme fatigue that makes it difficult to care for one’s self or for others, feeling worthless, and even thoughts of harming oneself or child. Mothers who are not treated for PPD may have negative health outcomes, including difficulty bonding with and caring for their children, chronic anxiety, and are at an increased risk for substance abuse. PPD is considered the single greatest risk factor for maternal suicide and infanticide. The important …

“Dude, Where’S My Car?” A Look At How The Seventh Circuit Addresses Chicago’S Vehicle Immobilization Practices That Drive Its Residents Into Bankruptcy, Steven L. Yachik
Seventh Circuit Review
Bankruptcy is largely a collective process that furthers two goals—the equitable distribution of the debtor’s assets on account of his liabilities and either granting the debtor a fresh start, or the rehabilitation of the debtor by utilizing his income and property to reorganize his affairs. The most significant tool available to further these goals is the automatic stay, which is widely recognized to enjoin most collection efforts against the debtor and prevent the chaotic scramble for the debtor’s assets would otherwise occur between his creditors. However, the debate has intensified the automatic stay is just a “stay”, or whether it …

Piercing The Bubble: Why Bubble Zone Regulations Are Content Based Restrictions On Speech, Hubert J. Zanczak
Seventh Circuit Review
While the Due Process Clause provides a right to privacy, including the right to access to abortion, the First Amendment provides the right to speak publicly against abortion. The clash between those two constitutional rights is most evident outside of abortion clinics, where protestors frequently gather to protests, or “counsel,” those seeking abortions. To ensure that those who wish to speak against abortions are not effectively prohibiting other's right to access to abortions, many municipalities have enacted strict restrictions on the ability to congregate and protests outside of reproductive healthcare facilities. By design, and in their effect, the laws target …

This study investigated household’s willingness to pay (WTP) for pesticide-free locally produced fresh fruits in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A Contingent Valuation Survey Method (CVM), constructed with a double-bounded WTP elicitation format, was used to interview a randomly selected sample of 600 households. Survey data revealed that households were willing to pay on average rupees 26 more per kilogram of pesticides free fruits. Results from regression analysis showed that age of the household head and his awareness of pesticides use over fruits, household size and their total monthly income were significant determinants of their WTP. In addition, health concern and environment …
