Virtual Charter Schools And The Democratic Aims Of Education, Dustin Hornbeck, Kathleen Knight Abowitz, Andrew Saultz

Education and Culture

Virtual schooling is expanding as an alternative to traditional public schooling in the early twenty-first century. This paper analyzes virtual schooling with regards to the democratic associational aims of public schooling as conceived by John Dewey. We examine the general landscape of virtual schooling by looking at recent history, governance, and student performance in these schools. Next, we analyze the significant ways in which virtual schools fail to meet associational aims for schooling. We conclude with a normative argument about the nature of new educational trends and innovations, drawing from Dewey’s ideas in The School and Society to articulate the …

Critically Appraised Topic (Cat): Building A Library Of Validated Practices., Jahan Moghadam, Samuel W. Yates, Richard L. Baskerville

Engaged Management ReView

Abstract

We review the critically appraised topic (CAT) as an evidence-based tool in management research and provide original examples for consideration. The CAT is a highly condensed form of systematic literature review, collecting study findings to address a specific practice-oriented research question. Such questions often investigate the effectiveness of a known intervention. In addition, a CAT critiques the best evidence available by considering the rigor and validity of relevant published research. CATs consolidate investigations of research relevant to specific, practical treatments in the field. We include two different CAT examples from unique business settings to illustrate the fundamental elements and …

Webometrics And Mississippi Public Libraries: A Webometrics Study Of Public Libraries In Mississippi, Charlie Simpkins

SLIS Connecting

With the introduction of the Internet, library websites have become new access points for a global community. A library’s website serves as a new branch for its users, one that can be accessed 24/7 globally. But with that continuous access to such a large audience, a library’s website should include certain key information to be truly beneficial to the user. This website content analysis examines the websites of public library systems in Mississippi for the presence of four elements from Kumar and Bansal (2014) essential menus for a library’s homepage and for the presence of eight elements from Chow, Bridges, …

Food Insecurity: Deconstructing Its Predictors And Relationship To Hiv Medication Adherence, Lacey Critchley Nov 2019

Food Insecurity: Deconstructing Its Predictors And Relationship To Hiv Medication Adherence, Lacey Critchley

Open Access Dissertations

In recent years, increasing attention and research has been placed on how to better engage people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in the HIV care continuum, as treatment for HIV/AIDS is now extremely effective. However, several marginalized populations continue to be disproportionately affected by the virus, hampering efforts to end the epidemic. Substance users remain one of the most difficult groups to engage and retain in HIV care and often have unsuppressed poorly controlled HIV infection as a result of inadequate antiretroviral (ART) adherence. Research shows substance users are also more likely to have multiple co-occurring social syndemics and engage in …

Water Vapor Near-Uv Absorption: Laboratory Spectrum, Field Evidence, And Atmospheric Impacts, Linsen Pei, Qilong Min, Yuyi Du, Zhechen Wang, Bangsheng Yin, Kai Yang, Patrick Disterhoft, Thomas Pongetti, Lei Zhu

Environmental Health Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Absorption of solar radiation by water vapor in the near-UV region is a poorly-understood but important issue in atmospheric science. To better understand water vapor near-UV absorption, we constructed a cavity ring-down spectrometer with bandwidth of 5 cm-1 (~0.05 nm) and obtained water vapor absorption cross-sections at 1 nm increments in the 290-350 nm region. Water vapor displays structured absorption over this range with maximum and minimum cross-sections of 8.4×10-25 and 1.6×10-25 cm2/molecule. Major water vapor absorption bands were observed at 293-295, 307-313, 319, 321-322, and 325 nm, with cross-section values higher than 4.0×10-25 …

Vix Futures Term Structure And The Expectations Hypothesis, Ivan Oscar Asensio Nov 2019

Vix Futures Term Structure And The Expectations Hypothesis, Ivan Oscar Asensio

Finance

Tests of the expectations hypothesis reveal that the slope of the VIX futures term structure predicts the direction but not the magnitude of the evolution of the short-end of the curve, but predicts neither the direction nor the magnitude of short-term changes in the long-end of the curve. Relative value seeking spread trades, constructed to exploit such violations, deliver excess returns with annualized Sharpe ratios equal or greater than those of volatility-writing strategies deployed by VIX ETN’s for a majority of the 32 spread trade combinations tested. I demonstrate that profits from beta-neutral variations of the spread trades, which are …

The Spillover Effect Of Marketing Discolored Beef On Consumer Preferences For Nondiscolored Beef, Ryan Feuz, F. Bailey Norwood, Ranjith Ramanathan Nov 2019

The Spillover Effect Of Marketing Discolored Beef On Consumer Preferences For Nondiscolored Beef, Ryan Feuz, F. Bailey Norwood, Ranjith Ramanathan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

Consumers prefer bright, cherry-red retail beef. Retailers often mark down the price of discolored beef for quick sale. However, following this practice could result in a net loss of revenue if consumer willingness to pay (WTP) for nondiscolored beef is negatively affected by the presence of discolored beef in the consumer choice set. Through a hypothetical online survey and a controlled in-person experiment, we determine that marketing discolored beef together with nondiscolored beef increases most consumers’ evaluation of, but not their WTP for, nondiscolored beef.

Organizational Capacity Of Nonprofit Organizations In Rural Areas Of The United States: A Scoping Review, Jayme E. Walters Nov 2019

Organizational Capacity Of Nonprofit Organizations In Rural Areas Of The United States: A Scoping Review, Jayme E. Walters

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Rural America is facing a plethora of problems related to poverty, crime, health, and education. Nonprofit organizations serve a vital role in rural communities by providing services and advocacy to residents. Yet, it is unknown if rural nonprofits have the means to effectively address the complex issues before them. This study examines the results of scoping review which characterizes the state of empirical knowledge regarding the organizational capacity of rural nonprofits in the United States. Fifteen articles from the past decade uncovered challenges and strengths related to organizational capacity, though more research is necessary to inform funders and educators.

A “Swiss Paradox” In The United States? Level Of Spatial Aggregation Changes The Association Between Income Inequality And Morbidity For Older Americans, Steven Cohen, Mary L. Greaney, Ann C. Klassen Nov 2019

A “Swiss Paradox” In The United States? Level Of Spatial Aggregation Changes The Association Between Income Inequality And Morbidity For Older Americans, Steven Cohen, Mary L. Greaney, Ann C. Klassen

Public Health Faculty Publications

Although a preponderance of research indicates that increased income inequality negatively impacts population health, several international studies found that a greater income inequality was associated with better population health when measured on a fine geographic level of aggregation. This finding is known as a “Swiss paradox”. To date, no studies have examined variability in the associations between income inequality and health outcomes by spatial aggregation level in the US. Therefore, this study examined associations between income inequality (Gini index, GI) and population health by geographic level using a large, nationally representative dataset of older adults. We geographically linked respondents’ county …

Improving Team-Based Decision Making Using Data Analytics And Informatics: Protocol For A Collaborative Decision Support Design, Don Roosan, Anandi Law, Mazharul Karim, Moom Roosan

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background: According to the September 2015 Institute of Medicine report, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, each of us is likely to experience one diagnostic error in our lifetime, often with devastating consequences. Traditionally, diagnostic decision making has been the sole responsibility of an individual clinician. However, diagnosis involves an interaction among interprofessional team members with different training, skills, cultures, knowledge, and backgrounds. Moreover, diagnostic error is prevalent in the interruption-prone environment, such as the emergency department, where the loss of information may hinder a correct diagnosis.

Objective: The overall purpose of this protocol is to improve team-based diagnostic …
