An Assessment Of Conceptual Understanding Of Metabolic Pathways, Amani Atiyalla Abdugadar Dec 2019

An Assessment Of Conceptual Understanding Of Metabolic Pathways, Amani Atiyalla Abdugadar

Dissertations

Researchers have previously studied misconceptions of biochemistry topics such as photosynthesis, protein structure, and ATP-production. However, no studies have reported on students’ misconceptions regarding major metabolic pathways. Since learning metabolism builds on students’ prior knowledge, new material being learned will be affected by the presence of any misconceptions. Some of these misconceptions will be robust and thus hard to be replaced by the correct concepts. Thus, if students are to learn new material, these misconceptions must be diminished. This dissertation focused on the origins of these misconceptions, investigated what misconceptions students had on metabolism, and why students developed misconceptions instead …

Statement of Significance: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in long-term cancer survivors. Chemotherapy with doxorubicin and other anthracyclines is the most common cause of cardiac toxicity in treated cancer patients. These agents are used to manage both hematologic and solid-tumor malignancies. Cardiac manifestations often develop months to years after initial exposure, causing cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Osteopathic medicine approaches disease in a holistic manner attempting to prevent major complications earlier in the disease course. Preventing or reducing chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity would greatly improve the outlook for these patients and their overall wellbeing.

Method For Spatial Overlap Estimation Of Electroencephalography And Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Responses, N. Heugel, E. Liebenthal, Scott A. Beardsley

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Simultaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) measurements may represent activity from partially divergent neural sources, but this factor is seldom modeled in fMRI-EEG data integration.

New method

This paper proposes an approach to estimate the spatial overlap between sources of activity measured simultaneously with fMRI and EEG. Following the extraction of task-related activity, the key steps include, 1) distributed source reconstruction of the task-related ERP activity (ERP source model), 2) transformation of fMRI activity to the ERP spatial scale by forward modelling of the scalp potential field distribution and backward source reconstruction (fMRI source simulation) …

Expanding The Fear Of Loss Of Vigilance Theory: Using Intolerance Of Uncertainty, Responsibility For Harm, And Fear Of Sleep To Predict Nocturnal Panic Attacks, Nicole S. Smith

Master's Theses

Nocturnal panic involves experiencing panic attacks out of a sleeping state without obvious causes such as nightmares or loud noises. Roughly half of patients with panic disorder will experience nocturnal panic in addition to panic attacks while awake, or daytime panic. Like daytime panic, nocturnal panic also occurs in other disorders such as PTSD. The Fear of Loss of Vigilance theory is currently the only model available to explain nocturnal panic. It suggests that nocturnal panickers fear states in which they cannot easily react to or protect themselves from danger. Prior research using a self-report measure to differentiate nocturnal and …

Self-Compassion As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Shame-Proneness And State Shame For Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Mary Catherine Guman Dec 2019

Self-Compassion As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Shame-Proneness And State Shame For Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Mary Catherine Guman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Childhood sexual abuse is a prevalent problem that has significant implications for psychological wellness and personal health. Childhood sexual abuse is related to a variety of negative outcomes, including the presence of shame-proneness. Consequently, shame-proneness is significantly related to heightened feelings of shame in adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. One might assume that self-compassion will decrease state shame for shame-prone survivors of sexual abuse; however, this might only be true when the total score of the Self-Compassion Scale is utilized. When the subscales are examined separately, the negative subscales could exacerbate the presence of state shame in shame-prone survivors …
