Boosting: Why You Can Use The Hp Filter, Peter C.B. Phillips, Zhentao Shi Dec 2019

Boosting: Why You Can Use The Hp Filter, Peter C.B. Phillips, Zhentao Shi

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The Hodrick-Prescott (HP) filter is one of the most widely used econometric methods in applied macroeconomic research. The technique is nonparametric and seeks to decompose a time series into a trend and a cyclical component unaided by economic theory or prior trend specification. Like all nonparametric methods, the HP filter depends critically on a tuning parameter that controls the degree of smoothing. Yet in contrast to modern nonparametric methods and applied work with these procedures, empirical practice with the HP filter almost universally relies on standard settings for the tuning parameter that have been suggested largely by experimentation with macroeconomic …

Influence Of Metabolic Capacity On The Consequences Of Spreading Depolarization, Katelyn M. Reinhart Dec 2019

Influence Of Metabolic Capacity On The Consequences Of Spreading Depolarization, Katelyn M. Reinhart

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

In the United States, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and stroke survivors often face long-term disability. After ischemic stroke, the ischemic territory can expand and recruit previously viable tissues into the lesioned area. During this critical period, there is an unsettling lack of interventions that prevent or treat secondary neuronal loss and cognitive decline. Clinical subdural recordings have revealed a close link between infarct progression and waves of spreading depolarizations (SD) in the acutely injured brain. SD is a slowly progressing wave of near-complete neuroglia depolarization that is extremely energetically demanding and this additional metabolic ‘hit’ …

The Impact Of Goal Orientation And Learning Organization On Mobbing Of Academic Advisors In The U.S., Bette A. Ludwig Dec 2019

The Impact Of Goal Orientation And Learning Organization On Mobbing Of Academic Advisors In The U.S., Bette A. Ludwig

Dissertations

Mobbing emerged in research decades ago as a way to understand aggressive behavior in the animal kingdom (Lorenz, 1966). This same concept has been adapted for higher education to explain acts of incivility and negative behaviors employees experience within their institutions (Duffy & Sperry, 2007, 2012; Harper, 2016; Yelgecen & Kokalan, 2009). The theory of mobbing encompasses both the organization and the aggressor.

This quantitative study, operationalized using measurable behaviors from the Work Domain Goal Orientation Questionnaire (Vandewalle, 1997), the Dimension of Learning Organization Questionnaire (Watkins and Marsick, 1993), and the Negative Acts Questionnaire (Einarsen, 1997), researches mastery orientation, performance …

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd and British Mycological Society While the negative effects of infrequent, high-intensity fire on soil fungal abundance are well-understood, it remains unclear how the short-term history of frequent, low-intensity fire in fire-dependent ecosystems impacts abundance, and whether this history governs any abundance declines. We used prescribed fire to experimentally alter the short-term fire history of patches within a fire-frequented old-growth pine savanna over a 3 y period. We then quantified fungal abundance before and after the final fire using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) assays and Droplet Digital™ PCR (ddPCR). Short-term fire history largely did not affect total …

Rapid Evolutionary Responses To Insecticide Resistance Management Interventions By The German Cockroach (Blattella Germanica L.), Mahsa Fardisi, Ameya D. Gondhalekar, Aaron R. Ashbrook, Michael E. Scharf

Faculty Publications

The German cockroach (Blattella germanica L.) is a worldwide pest that lives exclusively in human environments. B. germanica threatens human health by producing asthma-triggering allergens, vectoring pathogenic/antibiotic-resistant microbes, and by contributing to unhealthy indoor environments. While insecticides are essential for reducing cockroach populations and improving health outcomes, insecticide resistance has been a consistent barrier to cockroach control since the 1950s. We conducted seminal field studies to compare three insecticide resistance intervention strategies for cockroaches and evaluated resistance evolution across multiple generations. Using pre-treatment resistance assessment to drive decisions, we found that single active ingredient (AI) treatments can successfully eliminate cockroaches …

Purpose: There are strong retention benefits when learners frequently test themselves during the learning period. This practice of repeated retrieval has recently been applied successfully to children’s word learning. In this study, we apply a repeated retrieval procedure to the learning of novel adjectives by preschool-age children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and their typically developing (TD) peers. We ask whether the benefits of retrieval extend to children’s ability to apply the novel adjectives to newly introduced objects sharing the same characteristics as the objects used during the learning period. Method: Fourteen children with DLD (Mage = 62.64 months) and …

Winter Cover Crops Effect On Soil Moisture And Soybean Growth And Yield Under Different Tillage Systems, Bharat Sharma Acharya, Syam Dodla, Lewis A. Gaston, Murali Darapuneni, Jim J. Wang, Seema Sepat, Hari Bohara

Faculty Publications

Current agricultural systems heavily rely on intensive tillage and inorganic fertilizer inputs. This tradition increases the cost of agricultural production and negatively affects agricultural systems and environment. Conservation practices, such as cover crops (CCs) and no-till (NT), could serve as a management approach to promote soil health and agricultural sustainability. There is limited understanding of CCs effect on soil properties, crop growth and yield under different tillage systems in the humid sub-tropical region of the US. This study evaluated the effect of winter cover crops [wheat (Triticum aestivum) and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa)] and different tillage systems [NT and conventional …

Ohio Conservation Plan, Revised 2019, For The Plains Gartersnake, Thamnophis Radix, Norman Reichenbach

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This plan outlines strategies and methods used in an ongoing study initiated in 1999 to restore a self- sustaining population of the Plains Gartersnake (Thamnophis radix) in Ohio. Restoring a self-sustaining population would require increases in the current population to where the ratios of T. radix to T. sirtalis are from 1:1 to 1:12.2 in multiple locations in Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area (KPWA). This range of ratios would be similar to what was seen between 1978-80 by Reichenbach and Dalrymple (1986) at one site in KPWA and then more recently (2002 to 2009) by Wynn and Reichenbach (2018) at two …

Unique New York: Examining The Impact Of Breed Labels, Phenotypic Variations, And Geography On Length Of Stay In A Multi-Location New York Limited Intake Animal Shelter, Nicole Passmore

Theses and Dissertations

New York City (NYC) is a unique area for a shelter welfare as it has limited dog-friendly housing and an abundance of dogs. A common barrier to entry for NYC dog adopters trying to rent apartments is the breed label the shelter assigned to their dog, despite the fact breed labelling is primarily based off intuition and physical appearance. Following research by Gunter, Barber and Wynne (2016) that saw adoption rates at a Florida animal shelter increase following the removal of breed labels from the shelter’s kennel cards, some shelters ceased using breed labels. One was Bideawee, a limited admission …

Promoting Stem Teacher Reflection Through Self-Evaluation, Steven W. Mumford, Kathryn Newcomer

Political Science Faculty Publications

Evaluators face serious challenges assessing the impact of teaching practice on student outcomes, such as for assessing the impact of grant-funded teacher training programs. To overcome these barriers, the evaluators of an NSF-funded teacher scholarship program elected to coach teachers on conducting their own evaluations of student outcomes. To facilitate this process, we collaboratively developed templates and guidance for teachers’ measurement and reporting of student growth, provided training and technical assistance as teachers prepared student outcome data, and guided teachers in reflecting on results to improve their practice. The evaluators then aggregated fellows’ student outcome reports to assess the program’s …

Longitudinal Relationships Between Sleep Problems And Externalizing Behavior In Children: Investigating Genetic And Temperamental Moderators, Gabriel Casher

Dissertations

The current study aimed to evaluate multiple longitudinal determinants of externalizing behavior problems in twins/triplets aged 7 to 12 years. Specifically, a prospective longitudinal design was utilized to assess relationships between age 5 sleep problems, age 5 temperament traits, and later externalizing problems. Additionally, heritability of sleep problems was assessed by utilizing the twin method, and genetic contributions of two specific genes – DRD4 and 5-HTTLPR – were evaluated. A total of 93 twins/triplets (40 boys and 53 girls) and their parents participated in the current study, and data were collected through self-report, parent-report, and molecular and behavioral genetic methods. …

Pcr Analysis On The Effects Of Alpha Synuclein Treatment On C6 Rat Glioma Cells, Michael John Helmus Dec 2019

Pcr Analysis On The Effects Of Alpha Synuclein Treatment On C6 Rat Glioma Cells, Michael John Helmus

Masters Theses

Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare neurological disease that mainly implicates the neuronal protein, alpha synuclein, as being centrally involved in MSA pathology. Despite synucleinopathy dogma, little is known about alpha synucleins role in MSA pathogenesis. The Ide laboratory previously conducted an Affymetrix gene expression study utilizing the post-mortem pons tissue from eight individuals with MSA and five individuals without any known neurological disorders. One conclusion from that study was that downregulation of numerous mitochondrial homeostasis related genes had occurred. It is hypothesized that alpha synuclein can perturb mitochondrial homeostasis through direct interaction with mitochondria. This study utilized Reverse …

Categorization Of Vocal Fry In Running Speech, Katherine Proctor Dec 2019

Categorization Of Vocal Fry In Running Speech, Katherine Proctor

Honors Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine and categorize patterns of vocal fry in running speech. Since no other research studies have attempted to fully categorize vocal fry before, and due to the universality of the phenomenon of vocal fry, and the potential psychosocial and voice disorder consequences that come with using it, this topic is of great significance. For this study, voice samples were read into Praat and analyzed, and minor differences in the physiologies that produce different “types” of fry were examined.Temporal categories of vocal fry discovered were as follows: “onset,” “earlier,” “later,” and “final,” depending on …

Pectoral Nerve Block As The Sole Anesthetic Technique For A Modified Radical Mastectomy In A Comorbid Patient, Sehend Debbag, Fatma Sarıcaoğlu

Saudi Medical Journal

Breast surgery operations are generally performed by general anesthesia. In order to decrease postoperative pain, regional anesthesia is usually combined with general anesthesia. Pectoral nerve blocks is a novel technique to provide perioperative and postoperative pain control for patients underwent breast surgery. We performed pectoral nerve block I and pectoral nerve block II as a sole anesthetic technique with sedation by dexmedetomidine for modified radical mastectomy, for a 75-year-old female patient with multiple diseases. Pectoral nerve blocks with sedation could be a good technique for breast surgery than general anesthesia in comorbid patients.

Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle Enzyme Activities In A Mouse Model Of Methylmalonic Aciduria, Parith Wongkittichote, Gary Cunningham, Marshall L Summar, Elena Pumbo, Patrick Forny, Matthias R Baumgartner, Kimberly A Chapman

Open Access Publications

Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) is a propionate pathway disorder caused by dysfunction of the mitochondrial enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MMUT). MMUT catalyzes the conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, an anaplerotic reaction which feeds into the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. As part of the pathological mechanisms of MMA, previous studies have suggested there is decreased TCA activity due to a "toxic inhibition" of TCA cycle enzymes by MMA related metabolites, in addition to reduced anaplerosis. Here, we have utilized mitochondria isolated from livers of a mouse model of MMA (Mut-ko/ki) and their littermate controls (Ki/wt) to examine the amounts and enzyme functions of …

Sengstaken-Blakemore Tube As A Rescue Treatment For Hemorrhagic Shock Secondary To Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Erosion, Gretchen Evans, J Christopher Eagon, Vladimir Kushnir Dec 2019

Sengstaken-Blakemore Tube As A Rescue Treatment For Hemorrhagic Shock Secondary To Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Erosion, Gretchen Evans, J Christopher Eagon, Vladimir Kushnir

Open Access Publications

Gastrointestinal bleeding is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) erosion. We present the use of a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube as a treatment device for severe gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to persistent LAGB erosion. A 72-year-old woman post-LAGB placement presented with hemorrhagic shock from gastric band erosion that was not responsive to endoscopic and angiographic interventions. A salvage attempt to tamponade with a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube resulted in successful resuscitation of the patient. When used judiciously, balloon tamponade serves as a replicable technique to control severe gastric band erosion refractory to standard management.
