Diamond Zoysiagrass Response And Seedhead Control Using Plant Growth Regulators, Silas Ledford
Diamond Zoysiagrass Response And Seedhead Control Using Plant Growth Regulators, Silas Ledford
All Theses
Golfers have steadily increased demands for putting green quality, including distance and smoothness. ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass has emerged as a viable C4 turfgrass to be used by golf courses as putting greens or fairways and tees. ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass exhibits multiple benefits over other C4 and C3 turfgrasses, but an undesirable trait is seedhead production.
Three studies were conducted at Clemson University from April 2018 to November 2019 to investigate the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs) on ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass’ turf quality (TQ), lateral recovery and seedhead production. Study 1 tested PGRs in a field setting on the TQ, seedhead production and …
Differential Gene Expression In Tendinopathy: Insights Into The Failure Of Wound Healing, Michael Maggio
Differential Gene Expression In Tendinopathy: Insights Into The Failure Of Wound Healing, Michael Maggio
All Theses
Tendon injury can occur from activity-induced overuse, complete laceration or aging-related degeneration and these injuries commonly fail to wound heal without clinical treatment. Moreover, activity-induced overuse accounts for approximately half of all sports injuries and has highest occurrence rates in athletes playing football, baseball and basketball. Current non invasive technique to rest and ice the damaged tissue in combination with either oral NSAIDS or corticosteroid injections has shown little promise with only ~60% of cases regaining functionality of the tendon (Paterno et al., 2013).
From the literature, this seems to be caused by a combination of poorly perfused tissue along …
A New American Dream, Allison Rae Johnson
A New American Dream, Allison Rae Johnson
All Theses
A New American Dream traverses’ the hierarchical systems of power within the United States of America (USA). Survival and ‘success’ in the USA almost always requires assimilation into white culture, valuing patriarchy, capitalism and white supremacy (PCWS). Articulated through fine art prints, video and commercially produced postcards, my Master of Fine Arts Thesis artwork serves as multimedia instigation, compassing the viewer to reflect upon injustices of today and to reimagine a society of equality for tomorrow. Holding a queer liberatory politick with an artistic platform, my puissance lies within disrupting our ability to lucidly categorize and separate issues. The artwork …

Employing a qualitative research methodology, with data gathered from teacher interviews, school administrator interviews, and document analysis, this study identified several key components to the improvement of instructional practices for teachers. Policy implications and recommendations highlight the importance of the following: a common instructional framework, staff involvement in …
Who Gets The Frozen Embryos During A Divorce? A Case For The Contemporaneous Consent Approach, Sarah B. Kirschbaum
Who Gets The Frozen Embryos During A Divorce? A Case For The Contemporaneous Consent Approach, Sarah B. Kirschbaum
North Carolina Journal of Law & Technology
The increase in the use and success of Assisted Reproductive Technology has come with an increase in legal and ethical dilemmas facing courts and prospective parents. In particular, courts in the past 25 years have grappled with the issue of frozen embryo disposition during a divorce proceeding. Most couples sign some form of contract before freezing their embryos. Many state courts, however, interpret and enforce these contracts differently than they do other contracts. While approaches to in vitro fertilization contract interpretation and enforcement already exist in some states, many states have yet to decide what will happen if a frozen …
Exploring The Influence Of Servant Leadership On Teacher Satisfaction And Retention, Rachelle J. Wong
Exploring The Influence Of Servant Leadership On Teacher Satisfaction And Retention, Rachelle J. Wong
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Given the importance of qualified teachers, research has explored teacher retention. One of the most influential ways to retain qualified teachers is through teacher satisfaction. Research has consistently indicated that leadership can influence teacher satisfaction positively or negatively. This qualitative case study explored the influence of one leadership style: servant leadership. Among the many leadership styles, servant leadership is well-suited for the education setting, which naturally focuses on serving and growing people. Therefore, this study used 10 principles of servant leadership (Greenleaf 1970, 1996, 2002) as the conceptual framework, exploring the influence of servant leadership on teacher satisfaction and longevity. …

Hepatobiliary Analyses Suggest Chronic Pah Exposure In Hakes (Urophycis Spp.) Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Rachel E. Struch, Erin Pulster, Andrea D. Schreier, Steven A. Murawski
C-IMAGE Publications
Prior to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, we lacked a comprehensive baseline of oil contamination in the Gulf of Mexico's sediments, water column, and biota. Gaps in prespill knowledge limit our ability to determine the aftereffects of the Deepwater Horizon blowout or prepare to mitigate similar impacts during future oil spill disasters. We examined spatiotemporal differences in exposure to and metabolism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 2 hake species (Urophycis spp.) to establish a current baseline for these ecologically important, abundant, and at-risk demersal fishes. Gulf hake (Urophycis cirrata) and southern hake (Urophycis floridana) were collected throughout the Gulf …

Rural populations experience a myriad of cancer disparities ranging from lower screening rates to higher cancer mortality rates. These disparities are due in part to individual-level characteristics like age and insurance status, but the physical and social context of rural residence also plays a role. Our objective was two-fold: 1) to develop a multilevel conceptual framework describing how rural residence and relevant micro, macro, and supra-macro factors can be considered in evaluating disparities across the cancer control continuum and 2) to outline the unique considerations of multilevel statistical modeling in rural cancer research. We drew upon several formative frameworks that …

© 2019 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim It is becoming more apparent in tissue engineering applications that fine temporal control of multiple therapeutics is desirable to modulate progenitor cell fate and function. Herein, the independent temporal control of the co-delivery of miR-148b and miR-21 mimic plasmonic nanoparticle conjugates to induce osteogenic differentiation of human adipose stem cells (hASCs), in a de novo fashion, is described. By applying a thermally labile retro-Diels–Alder caging and linkage chemistry, these miRNAs can be triggered to de-cage serially with discrete control of activation times. The method relies on illumination of the nanoparticles at …

© 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. Purpose of Review: The design of novel herpes simplex type I (HSV-1)–derived oncolytic virotherapies is a balancing act between safety, immunogenicity, and replicative potential. We have undertaken this review to better understand how these considerations can be incorporated into rational approaches to the design of novel herpesvirus oncolytic virotherapies. Recent Findings: Several recent papers have demonstrated that enhancing the potential of HSV-1 oncolytic viruses to combat anti-viral mechanisms present in the tumor microenvironment leads to greater efficacy than their parental viruses. Summary: It is not entirely clear how the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment affects oncolytic …

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd Clinical glucocorticoid use, and diseases that produce elevated circulating glucocorticoids, promote drastic changes in body composition and reduction in whole body insulin sensitivity. Because steroid-induced diabetes is the most common form of drug-induced hyperglycemia, we investigated mechanisms underlying the recognized phenotypes associated with glucocorticoid excess. Male C57BL/6 J mice were exposed to either 100ug/mL corticosterone (cort) or vehicle in their drinking water. Body composition measurements revealed an increase in fat mass with drastically reduced lean mass during the first week (i.e., seven days) of cort exposure. Relative to the vehicle control group, mice receiving cort had …

Change In Attribution Perspective, Shame, And Academic Identity For Freshmen On Probation Enrolled In University Academic Recovery Courses: A Mixed Methods Study, Christine L. Robinson
Dissertations
Student retention is critical to the success of the student, the college or university, and society in general. Consequently, institutions of higher education continue to focus efforts on student retention strategies and one such strategy utilizes academic recovery courses to support probationary freshmen. Previous research studies of these courses largely focus on academic outcomes without examining the “why” or “how” behind such outcomes. Some studies also discuss constructs including attribution perspective, shame, and academic identity. However, the relationship between these constructs has not been researched, particularly with regard to any change that may occur for probationary freshmen engaged with an …

Foreclosure's Fallout: Economic Adversity And Voter Turnout, Paru Shah, Amber Wichowsky
Political Science Faculty Research and Publications
With the foreclosure crisis continuing to impact individuals and communities across the country, understanding the extent of its effect on political life is tantamount. In this paper, we ask how political behaviors are influenced by the economic adversities created by this crisis: loss of home, loss of resources, and perhaps loss of political efficacy. Previous research on economic adversity focuses almost exclusively on unemployment. Here we explore the demobilizing effects of foreclosures at the individual level, community levels, and the intersection of individuals nested in communities. With a unique dataset that matches voter file data to a database on individual …

Human-Machine Teamwork: An Exploration Of Multi-Agent Systems, Team Cognition, And Collective Intelligence, Lorenzo Barberis Canonico
All Dissertations
One of the major ways through which humans overcome complex challenges is teamwork. When humans share knowledge and information, and cooperate and coordinate towards shared goals, they overcome their individual limitations and achieve better solutions to difficult problems. The rise of artificial intelligence provides a unique opportunity to study teamwork between humans and machines, and potentially discover insights about cognition and collaboration that can set the foundation for a world where humans work with, as opposed to against, artificial intelligence to solve problems that neither human or artificial intelligence can solve on its own.
To better understand human-machine teamwork, it’s …

Multiple problems facing society in the 21st century, including climate change and global concern over pandemics, require a greater number of STEM graduates with content knowledge and critical thinking skills. This has led to additional funding and research in teaching and learning, but much of the published literature in the context of biology education has investigated the impact of specific instructional practices across a spectrum of classrooms (undergraduate and professional) or the learning strategies specifically of medical students.
As the science of learning has developed, it has become clear that the process of learning is context-dependent. Despite continued attention to …

On Resilient Control For Secure Connected Vehicles: A Hybrid Systems Approach, Roberto Merco
All Dissertations
According to the "Internet of Things Forecast" conducted by Ericsson, connected devices will be around 29 billion by 2022. This technological revolution enables the concept of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) that will transform many applications, including power-grid, transportation, smart buildings, and manufacturing. Manufacturers and institutions are relying on technologies related to CPSs to improve the efficiency and performances of their products and services. However, the higher the number of connected devices, the higher the exposure to cybersecurity threats. In the case of CPSs, successful cyber-attacks can potentially hamper the economy and endanger human lives. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to …
The Impact Of Transportation Disadvantage On Healthcare Access, Ying Zhou
The Impact Of Transportation Disadvantage On Healthcare Access, Ying Zhou
All Dissertations
Millions of Americans have difficulties in transporting themselves to desired locations and thus are considered to be transportation disadvantaged (Wallace, Hughes-Cromwick, Mull, & Khasnabis, 2005). This population group is found to participate in fewer out-of-home activities, which may eventually result in social exclusion and impaired well-being (Kenyon, Rafferty, & Lyons, 2003; Marottoli et al., 2000). This research examines one critical aspect that is important for people’s well-being—healthcare access. Despite the effort and resources the government has put into improving healthcare access, impaired access remains a problem in the United States (Department of Health and Human Services, 2010). Transportation disadvantage has …

Assessing Physical Activity And Sleep In Axial Spondyloarthritis: Measuring The Gap., Atul Deodhar, Lianne S Gensler, Marina Magrey, Jessica A Walsh, Adam Winseck, Daniel Grant, Philip Mease
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) frequently report pain, stiffness, fatigue, and sleep problems, which may lead to impaired physical activity. The majority of reported-on measures evaluating physical activity and sleep disturbance in axSpA are self-reported questionnaires, which can be impacted by patient recall (reporting bias). One objective measure, polysomnography, has been employed to evaluate sleep in patients with axSpA; however, it is an intrusive measure and cannot be used over the long term. More convenient objective measures are therefore needed to allow for the long-term assessment of both sleep and physical activity in patients' daily lives. Wearable technology that utilizes …
Contextualizing Interpreter Training In Africa: Two Case Studies From Kenya, Carmen Delgado Luchner
Contextualizing Interpreter Training In Africa: Two Case Studies From Kenya, Carmen Delgado Luchner
International Journal of Interpreter Education
This article explores the potential and limitations of interpreter training in Africa. It considers relevant features of the context, namely, the kind of multilingualism that characterizes postcolonial societies (with a coexistence of official, national, regional and vehicular languages within the same geographic space), and the social and geographic distribution of these languages within and across countries. My argument is based on two different interpreter training initiatives implemented in Kenya between 2010 and 2015: a Master’s degree program in conference interpreting for Kenyan and international students with English, French and/or Swahili; and a Certificate program in community interpreting for refugees from …
