Simulation Of Skull Fracture Due To Falls, Anthony Vicini, Tarun Goswami Dec 2019

Simulation Of Skull Fracture Due To Falls, Anthony Vicini, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

This study presents novel predictive equations for von Mises stress values of bones in the frontal and lateral regions of the skull. The equations were developed based on results of a finite element model developed during this research. The model was validated for frontal and lateral loading conditions with input values mimetic to fall scenarios. Using neural network processing of the information derived from the model achieved R2 values of 0.9990 for both the stress and deflection. Based on the outcome of the fall victims, a threshold von Mises stress of 40.9 to 46.6 MPa was found to indicate skull …

From The Civil War To Central High School The Legacy Of Richard Toombs, Rhonda Stewart Dec 2019

From The Civil War To Central High School The Legacy Of Richard Toombs, Rhonda Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

The United States of America experienced many changes between April 1861 and April 1961. The study of historical events during this time period is elevated when an individual family can be placed within the context of these events. The Civil War and the Central High Crisis are two events documented through the eyes of the Toombs family of Little Rock, Arkansas. Providing a personal glimpse of one family’s journey through this time period of American life adds to the collective knowledge of these historical events. It offers an alternate viewpoint of interpretation of the impact of these events on the …

Social Media: Its Effects On Female Digital Natives, Justine Ewald Dec 2019

Social Media: Its Effects On Female Digital Natives, Justine Ewald

Honors Capstones

With the presence and popularity of social media at a non-stop increase, there is a plethora of research aimed to decide if this digital world is positive or negative for society. This research takes a narrower approach as it looks at how social media specifically affects females who have grown up having access to and using it. Female digital natives are positively impacted by the relationships, self-concept, and body positiveness that social media builds. However, they are negatively impacted by the harmful effects that come from cyberbullying and self-image issues. Do the impacts of the positives outweigh the negatives, or …

Molecular Assay Optimization For Enhanced Detection Of Legionella Spp. In Passaic County, New Jersey, Paul Yoon

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Legionella spp. are gram-negative bacteria that are found in a wide range of freshwater environments such as lakes, streams, soil, and manmade water systems. The Legionella genera contains 58 species of bacteria and of them approximately half have been linked to human disease. Infection due to Legionella spp. is known as Legionellosis, which consists of Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever. Legionnaires’ disease cases have been increasing in recent years and the CDC report 7,500 cases in 2017. Infection from Legionella occurs through inhalation of aerosolized water droplets and leads to infection of alveolar macrophages. Legionella pneumophila is responsible for 90% …

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Statementof the problem: The implementation of lateral wedge insole (LWI) as a conservative treatment strategy for knee Osteoarthritis (OA) may be influenced by the knowledge, attitudes and practices ofhealthcareproviders, including physical therapists (PTs). Although the literature has identified thebiomechanicalfunction of insoles, little is known about the PTs’ knowledge, attitudes and practices and the likelihood of LWI adoption in their clinical practices. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify and understand the relationships that might exist between PTs’ knowledge, attitudes and practices andlikelihoodof LWI adoption as a cost-effective treatment approach.

Methods: The study design was descriptive, cross-sectional andcorrelational, utilizing …

Should We Flip The Script?: A Literature Review Of Deficit-Based Perspectives On First-Year Undergraduate Students’ Information Literacy, Tatiana Pashkova-Balkenhol, Mark Lenker, Emily Cox, Elizabeth Kocevar-Weidinger Dec 2019

Should We Flip The Script?: A Literature Review Of Deficit-Based Perspectives On First-Year Undergraduate Students’ Information Literacy, Tatiana Pashkova-Balkenhol, Mark Lenker, Emily Cox, Elizabeth Kocevar-Weidinger

Library Faculty Research

This mixed method systematic review considers recent literature on the information literacy (IL) skills of first-year undergraduate students. The review uncovers the following themes: faculty and librarians perceive first-year students as lacking IL skills; students have varying perceptions of their IL skills; assessment studies yield conflicting findings on first-year students' IL; communication between high school and college librarians is challenging; and some IL researchers emphasise and leverage first-year students' prior knowledge and experience in IL instruction. These themes emerge from extensive searches in four research databases for scholarly and professional articles written in English within the past ten years. With …

Bone Mineral Density Of The Common Bottlenose Dolphin, Tursiops Truncatus: A Proposed Model For Monitoring Osteological And Ecosystem Health, James Wright Burrus Powell

Dissertations and Theses

Bone mineral density (BMD) in the pectoral flipper of the common bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, was examined to address the need to define a comprehensive target site for clinical osteodensitometric assessment and to establish ranges of observed bone density values for this species. Radii were analyzed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the accepted standard in human medical studies. Multiple loci within the radius were identified and assessed for their correlation to BMD of the entire bone. Radii BMD were also examined for differences based on sex, age, total body length, handedness, geographical affinity, and nutritional status at time …

Eliminating Medication Errors In Nursing Practice With An Innovative Quality Improvement Tool Proposal, Zoe B. Talyor

Honors Capstones

If nursing students/nurses use a developed tool targeting and walking through of all 5 rights of medication administration, step by step, there will be a decrease in medication errors. The utmost goal that nurses hold in their practice is to provide the highest quality of care possible, in order to achieve the best patient outcomes. Many barriers exist when it comes to maintaining optimum quality of care. However, one that is extremely prevalent in today’s practice is related to errors with medication administration. Failure to complete any of the five rights to administration is considered a medication error. Whether it …

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Emergent airway management outside of the operating room is a high-risk procedure. Limited data exists about the indication and physiologic state of the patient at the time of intubation, the location in which it occurs, or patient outcomes afterward.

METHODS: We retrospectively collected data on all emergent airway management interventions performed outside of the operating room over a 6-month period. Documentation included intubation performance, and intubation related complications and mortality. Additional information including demographics, ASA-classification, comorbidities, hospital-stay, ICU-stay, and 30-day in-hospital mortality was obtained.

RESULTS: 336 intubations were performed in 275 patients during the six-month period. The majority of …

The Process Of Establishing Theoretically Grounded Measures Of Science And Chemistry Identity For Use In Undergraduate Chemistry Courses, Kathryn Nicole Hosbein Dec 2019

The Process Of Establishing Theoretically Grounded Measures Of Science And Chemistry Identity For Use In Undergraduate Chemistry Courses, Kathryn Nicole Hosbein

Dissertations and Theses

Identity has been theorized to aid in student persistence toward science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) degrees. However, before we can explore the impacts of learning environments on identity, and subsequently persistence, robust measures that can aid in understanding how identity is fostered need to be available. This research study aims to create measures of identity by expanding an existing physics identity framework and contextualizing it to science and chemistry identities. Development of the measures was carried out through two distinct phases that provided evidence for reliability and multiple aspects of validity.

The first phase of the study used qualitative …

Epigenomic Dysregulation-Mediated Alterations Of Key Biological Pathways And Tumor Immune Evasion Are Hallmarks Of Gingivo-Buccal Oral Cancer, Debodipta Das, Sahana Ghosh, Arindam Maitra, Nidhan K. Biswas, Chinmay K. Panda, Bidyut Roy, Rajiv Sarin, Partha P. Majumder

Journal Articles

Background: Gingivo-buccal oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC-GB) is the most common cancer among men in India and is associated with high mortality. Although OSCC-GB is known to be quite different from tongue cancer in its genomic presentation and its clinical behavior, it is treated identically as tongue cancer. Predictive markers of prognosis and therapy that are specific to OSCC-GB are, therefore, required. Although genomic drivers of OSCC-GB have been identified by whole exome and whole genome sequencing, no epigenome-wide study has been conducted in OSCC-GB; our study has filled this gap, and has discovered and validated epigenomic hallmarks of gingivobuccal …

A Case Of Ccdc6-Ret Fusion Mutation In Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (All), A Known Activating Mutation Reported In All, Mateo Mejia Saldarriaga, Amir Steinberg, Eric A. Severson, Adam Binder Dec 2019

A Case Of Ccdc6-Ret Fusion Mutation In Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (All), A Known Activating Mutation Reported In All, Mateo Mejia Saldarriaga, Amir Steinberg, Eric A. Severson, Adam Binder

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

We report the case of a patient with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) who was found to harbor a gene fusion involving the CCDC6 and RET genes. Although the RET mutations have been identified before in othermalignancies, and it is thought to represent a driver mutation in these neoplasms, it has yet to be described in ALL. The identification of known fusion genes conferring activating tyrosine kinase activity in neoplasms can suggest potential therapeutic role of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), an approach that has been exploited in several other fusion genes.

Autism Spectrum Disorders And Positive Familial Effects, Genevieve Weaver Dec 2019

Autism Spectrum Disorders And Positive Familial Effects, Genevieve Weaver

Senior Honors Theses

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have been found to significantly impact familial structures and outcomes in various studies. The majority of the impact, however, has been primarily negative; effects like increased stress, marital discontentment, and stigmatization are commonly expressed by families. In this study data from a questionnaire, interview, and picture presentations were analyzed and triangulated to identify the positive familial effects of having a child or sibling with ASD. Parents and siblings shared that having a child or sibling with ASD has bettered their life through learning to enjoy the identity of the individual with ASD, through personal growth, and …
