Non-Physician Vs. Physician: Cross-Disciplinary Expert Testimony In Medical Negligence Litigation, Marc D. Ginsberg Apr 2019

Non-Physician Vs. Physician: Cross-Disciplinary Expert Testimony In Medical Negligence Litigation, Marc D. Ginsberg

Georgia State University Law Review

The source of the applicable standard of care in a specific medical negligence claim is multifaceted. The testifying expert witness, when explaining the applicable standard of care, “would draw upon his own education and practical frame of reference as well as upon relevant medical thinking, as manifested by literature, educational resources and information available to practitioners, and experiences of similarly situated members of the profession.” Accordingly, in typical medical negligence litigation, the plaintiff’s expert witness testifying regarding the existence of and the defendant-physician’s deviation from the standard of care would be a physician. Why, then, have courts permitted non-physicians to …

Social Discounting: An Examination Of The Neural And Behavioral Performance Of Individuals Making Altruistic Decisions About Family Members, Chesney Arend Apr 2019

Social Discounting: An Examination Of The Neural And Behavioral Performance Of Individuals Making Altruistic Decisions About Family Members, Chesney Arend

Honors Thesis

Social Discounting is defined as the decrease in generosity between the decision maker (participant) and the recipient of a gift as social distance (perceived closeness) between the two increases. To date, there is little data that has been collected that compares both the responses of behavioral performance and the corresponding neural activity when individuals are asked to make decisions about money based upon how close they feel to someone of their kin or not of their kin as their perceived social distances or relationships change. This specific study includes both fMRI and behavioral data analysis and takes into account the …

Interprofessional Collaboration To Improve Discharge Planning, Erica L. Spalding Apr 2019

Interprofessional Collaboration To Improve Discharge Planning, Erica L. Spalding

Doctoral Projects

Historically, health care professionals collaborated solely with other professionals within the same discipline. However, evidence shows collaboration between all disciplines involved in patient care leads to improved patient outcomes. Interprofessional collaboration can reduce costs and improve patient care, yet is used inconsistently in health care systems. Interprofessional collaboration was not fully used on two medical-surgical units in a large health system in the Midwest, particularly during the discharge planning process. This project aimed to standardize rounds on two units as part of a larger initiative to standardize rounds across all units within the system. The clinical question to be answered …

Interprofessional Collaboration During Discharge Planning For A Large Midwestern Hospital, Sarah Shepler Apr 2019

Interprofessional Collaboration During Discharge Planning For A Large Midwestern Hospital, Sarah Shepler

Doctoral Projects

Introduction: Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) improves the quality of healthcare delivery. IPC enhances communication during discharge planning, through use of structured daily rounds to reduce readmissions, length of stay (LOS), cost, and mortality. A $240 billion reduction in cost could be achieved with IPC. The Joint Commission, Institute of Medicine, and World Health Organization emphasize use of IPC to reduce errors, improve patient outcomes, and refine transitions of care for patients.

Objectives: The goal of this project was to determine how IPC within structured daily rounds during discharge planning impacts patient LOS and staff satisfaction.

Methods: This quality improvement project was …

Improving Nursing Students’ Attitudes And Beliefs About Transgender Clients Through The Use Of A Simulated Clinical Experience, J. Alex Thompson Msn, M.Ed., Rn, Cne

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Negative healthcare experiences may lead to poor health outcomes for transgender individuals, but nursing curricula give little attention to transgender healthcare. This study engaged nursing students in a simulated clinical experience (SCE) which featured a young adult transgender male in an acute care setting to determine whether participation would have a significant impact on student nurses’ attitudes and beliefs about transgender individuals.

Methods: The convergent parallel mixed-methods design used a one group pretest-posttest and a post-case debriefing interview to examine undergraduate nursing student attitudes and beliefs toward transgender individuals. Participants (N=27) reported their feelings via the Transgender Attitudes and …

A Comparison Of The United States And Costa Rican Health Care Systems And Their Influence On Immigrant Women's Maternal And Child Health Outcomes, Tamera R. Sullivan Apr 2019

A Comparison Of The United States And Costa Rican Health Care Systems And Their Influence On Immigrant Women's Maternal And Child Health Outcomes, Tamera R. Sullivan

Senior Theses

Health is a fundamental right for all humans, and every nation has a unique system for health care delivery. While the United States and Costa Rica follow two different welfare state models, there is still value in comparing the two countries. This project was inspired by my public health-based study abroad experience in Costa Rica in May 2018, which sparked a desire to learn more about the structures that form the health care system of each country. The United States has a more privatized and fragmented health care system, while Costa Rica has a public, universal health care system. Although …

The Effects Of Marine Natural Products On The Microenvironment Of Pancreatic Cancer, Whitney D. Davis, Esther Guzman Apr 2019

The Effects Of Marine Natural Products On The Microenvironment Of Pancreatic Cancer, Whitney D. Davis, Esther Guzman

Honors Theses

Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with that number increasing each year. New drugs need to be developed to treat this disease. One source of new drugs is marine natural products. Two compounds—HB-131 and HB-018—were tested for potential anti-cancer properties. Pancreatic cancer cells were exposed to these compounds for six hours and the conditioned media from this treatment was used to further our understanding of the effects of these compounds. A western blot was used to determine matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression, while a zymogram was used to determine MMP activity. A sandwich …

The Relationship Between Identity Dimensions, Gender Conformity, And Satisfaction With Life, Alexandria Colburn Apr 2019

The Relationship Between Identity Dimensions, Gender Conformity, And Satisfaction With Life, Alexandria Colburn

Master's Theses (2009 -)

There is a large body of evidence indicating physical and mental health disparities among marginalized populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between identity dimensions, gender conformity, and well-being. I anticipated that identification with a marginalized identity group would predict poorer satisfaction with life, compared to identification with a privileged group. In addition, I investigated the role of gender conformity as a possible interaction variable in the relationship between identity factors (assigned sex, age, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation) and outcomes of satisfaction with life. A hierarchical multiple regression was used to investigate these hypotheses. Results …

Vietnamese Family Caregivers’ Adjustment Process To Their Caregiving Roles For Family Members With Dementia, Trang Nguyen Apr 2019

Vietnamese Family Caregivers’ Adjustment Process To Their Caregiving Roles For Family Members With Dementia, Trang Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the psychological process that Vietnamese family members go through to adjust to the caregiving role for their relatives with dementia. Adopting constructivist grounded theory, 30 face-to-face, semi-structured interviews, including 10 follow-up interviews, were conducted with 20 Vietnamese primary family caregivers of relatives with dementia from the National Geriatric Hospital in Vietnam. The study results reveal that Vietnamese family caregivers held limited understanding of dementia. They used a mixed explanatory model, combining both folk (e.g., dementia as normal aging) and biomedical approaches (e.g., dementia as a brain-related disease) to explain causes of dementia. Family cohesion and responsibility are …

What Happens Here Stays Here? Associations Between Choices During The Twenties And Flourishing Or Floundering During The Thirties, Melanie Lynn Lott Apr 2019

What Happens Here Stays Here? Associations Between Choices During The Twenties And Flourishing Or Floundering During The Thirties, Melanie Lynn Lott

Theses and Dissertations

Life course theory suggests that an individual’s development is influenced by many factors such as one’s past choices and environment. The twenties are a period of great autonomy for many young people with opportunities to engage in choices with lasting consequences, both positive (e.g., furthering education, volunteering) and negative (e.g., crime, risky sexual behavior, heavy video game use). The current study explored the relationship between behaviors during one’s twenties and indices of adjustment (i.e., life satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and hope) and maladjustment (i.e., poor emotional health and regret) in one’s thirties. Additionally, as factors such as income and biological sex …

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

A cognitive challenge when imposed during a low-force isometric contraction will exacerbate sex- and age-related decreases in force steadiness, but the mechanism is not known. We determined the role of oscillations in the common synaptic input to motor units on force steadiness during a muscle contraction with a concurrent cognitive challenge. Forty-nine young adults (19–30 yr; 25 women, 24 men) and 36 old adults (60–85 yr; 19 women, 17 men) performed a cognitive challenge (counting backward by 13) during an isometric elbow flexion task at 5% of maximal voluntary contraction. Single-motor units were decomposed from high-density surface EMG recordings. For …

Is Technology The Key To Prevention Of Falls Among The Elderly In Rapidly Aging Societies? A Case Study Of Kunming, China, Phoebe Kiburi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As the aging society rapidly becomes more dominant in the world, there is a pressing need for different stakeholders to tend to the needs of the aging sufficiently. This is crucial in ensuring the robustness of the healthcare system as a whole; given that it can only be as strong as its weakest link. This study focuses on one of the areas of need of the ageing society: fall prevention.

Numerous studies have been done on interventions by the government, private entities, elderly people and their caregivers to prevent occurrence and recurrence of falls. However, most of these have been …

Health Services and Informatics Research

The couple and coparenting relationships are demonstrated to be prospectively and bidirectionally associated over months to years during the early parenting years. However, little is known about these associations at the daily level within the first year of parenthood, when coparenting first emerges. The goal of the current study was to examine the association between couples' daily feelings of relationship closeness and coparenting support in first-time parents and determine directionality of these effects using a dyadic daily diary design. At 10 months postpartum, heterosexual couples (

Measurements of fasting glucose (FG) or glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) are two clinically approved approaches commonly used to determine glycemia, both of which are influenced by genetic factors. Obtaining accurate measurements of FG or HbA1c is not without its challenges, though. Measuring glycated serum protein (GSP) offers an alternative approach for assessing glycemia. The aim of this study was to estimate the heritability of GSP and GSP expressed as a percentage of total serum albumin (%GA) using a variance component approach and localize genomic regions (QTLs) that harbor genes likely to influence GSP and %GA trait variation in a large …

Processing speed is a psychological construct that refers to the speed with which an individual can perform any cognitive operation. Processing speed correlates strongly with general cognitive ability, declines sharply with age, and is impaired across a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Thus, identifying genes that influence processing speed will likely improve understanding of the genetics of intelligence, biological aging, and the etiologies of numerous disorders. Previous genetics studies of processing speed have relied on simple phenotypes (e.g., mean reaction time) derived from single tasks. This strategy assumes, erroneously, that processing speed is a unitary construct. In the present …

Technical Processing Of University Library: A Theoretical Study, Rajib Kalita

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Technical services operations comprise of ordering, claiming and receipt of materials, cataloging and classification of materials; and serials control. Beside these, other technical services operations contain circulation, documents, foreign language and special collections, and bibliographic instruction in technical services areas. This leads me to believe that the distinction between technical services and public or reader services in individual libraries is based on custom and tradition arising out of incidental circumstances, rather than on fundamental principle. In this article, I tried to provide some basic aspect regarding technical processing which help in maintaining the library bitterly. In this article, I include …

Robots Instead Of Immigrants: The Positive Feedback Of Japanese Migration Policy On Social Isolation And Communication Problems, Pál Koudela Mar 2019

Robots Instead Of Immigrants: The Positive Feedback Of Japanese Migration Policy On Social Isolation And Communication Problems, Pál Koudela

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Demographic decline in contemporary Japan already leads to labor shortages, and there is still no existing fertility policy to stop the shrinking population. As an alternative, immigration policy could serve for replacement. However, the Japanese government opposes it mainly because of their idea of cultural homogeneity. Such thought has its historical and cultural background in the confrontation of centuries-long isolation and modern ethnic nationalism in the Meiji period. The recent plan of the Japanese leadership is to increase the role of robotics in affected professions such as caregiving. At this point, the social role of robots is going through a …
