Efficacy Of The Abcde Bundle In Reducing Delirium In Critically Ill Patients: An Integrative Literature Review, Leah Hanson
Efficacy Of The Abcde Bundle In Reducing Delirium In Critically Ill Patients: An Integrative Literature Review, Leah Hanson
Nursing Masters Papers
Delirium is an acute dysfunction of the brain that occurs in up to eighty percent of critically ill patients which has been associated with increased morbidity, mortality and long-term cognitive deficits. In an effort to reduce symptoms associated with Intensive Care Unit (ICU) acquired delirium, leading critical care researchers created the Awakening and Breathing Coordination, Delirium Monitoring/Management and Early mobility (ABCDE) bundle (Balas et al, 2012). Through an integrative literature review, the aim of this scholarly inquiry paper is to determine the efficacy of the ABCDE bundle in reducing the incidence of delirium in critically ill patients and provide supporting …
Concerns And Considerations In Mental Health Practices With Older Culturally Deaf Adults, David M. Feldman
Concerns And Considerations In Mental Health Practices With Older Culturally Deaf Adults, David M. Feldman
JADARA
The elderly population in America is expected to more than double over the next half century. Consequently, the corresponding growth of the culturally Deaf' elderly population becomes important to examine. Because this population is a subgroup of both the hearing elderly and culturally Deaf populations, the expectation is that mental health professionals working with Deaf elderly clients will have specific concerns and will behave in ways that are specific to this population. Little is known, however, about the issues that challenge mental health professionals working with elderly Deaf clients. At present, mental health professions across all fields are unprepared to …

Dissertations
Abstract
Problem: Patients who miss appointments have poorer health outcomes and increase costs for medical care. The purpose of this quality improvement study was to evaluate the effects of missed appointments on patients’ outcomes for diabetes mellitus, and resulting financial losses to a private primary care practice.
Method: A quality improvement initiative with a retrospective review of patients over a six-month period in 2018 (before) and 2019 (after a missed appointment fee was implemented). All adult patients, aged 18-92 years, were included. For those with diabetes, a HbA1c for each patient who kept or missed their appointment was recorded.

The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study was to understand the meaning of online co-teaching for PhD faculty and teaching assistants (TAs). Narrative pedagogy underpinned the inquiry, which was designed to advance the discourse on mentorship of PhD future faculty. A faculty member and TA authors kept concurrent weekly journals or after-the-fact written reflections. The authors analyzed data as a team using a five-phase interpretive phenomenological analysis process to interpret the meaning of co-teaching for faculty and TAs. Lines of inquiry, central concerns, exemplars, shared meanings, and paradigm cases supported the overall interpretation, “You Learn When You Teach.” Co-mentorship should be a …

Social Prescribing For An Aging Population, Amy Clements-Cortés, Joyce Yip
Social Prescribing For An Aging Population, Amy Clements-Cortés, Joyce Yip
Music Faculty Publications
As the human population is moving toward a demographic of aging individuals, increased levels of stress will be placed on the current health care system. “… As people live longer, there is a tendency or the onset of disease to occur closer to the end of life” (p. 441) and the incidence of mental health illnesses is prevalent in older adults. Currently, the medical model is dominant in the health care system and aims to cure any issue(s) without considerations in the cause or source. Social prescribing/social prescription enables physicians and health care professionals to refer individuals to non-clinical services, …

Academic Service-Learning Experience Embraces The Vincentian Mission In Physician Assistant Education, Alyssa Quinlan, Pamela Gregory-Fernandez, Corinne Alois, Carla Hernandez Goodman
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Motivated by the belief that health care is a basic human right and driven by a Vincentian mission, St. John’s University Physician Assistant Program incorporates service minded educational experiences created to expose students to the necessity to reach those most in need—“the poor, alienated and the aged.” In Spring 2018, in conjunction with the SJU Academic Service-Learning program, a geriatric service assignment was integrated into the geriatric course curriculum. Working with Selfhelp Virtual Senior Center, local senior centers and nursing homes, students participated in an outreach project to serve senior citizens. Students shared their experiences through reflection and pre- …

More than 300 years ago, Antony van Leewenhoeck first described observing single-celled microorganisms, which he termed "animalcules," examining his saliva under a microscope. Although the idea of the coexistence of microorganisms in our body is not new, we have only recently been able to investigate their ecological relationship to our body, with the development of high-throughput molecular techniques. The diverse microorganism communities residing in our guts are established and maintained by complex interactions among microorganisms and their host. Notably, their alteration has been implicated in influencing various diseases including neurological diseases. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of …

Contemporary Society And The Issues Facing Deaf Baby Boomers When Compared To Their Hearing Counterparts: A Review, Timothy J. Ainger, Elizabeth Romero, David M. Feldman
JADARA
In today's society, it is important for researchers and practitioners to note that the generation known as the Baby Boomers is more than a socio-demographic clump; it represents a significant part of the population. This paper will be reviewing the issues facing the deaf baby boomer’s population and how they are contrasted to their hearing counterparts. The areas examined include social/political, technological, physical health care, and mental healthcare. In each area, this paper aims to illustrate that it can sometimes be difficult for deaf individuals in the baby boomer generation to find and utilize any number of societal resources.
Children’S Cognitive Reflection Predicts Conceptual Understanding In Science And Mathematics, Andrew Young
Children’S Cognitive Reflection Predicts Conceptual Understanding In Science And Mathematics, Andrew Young
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
The Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT; Frederick, 2005) is the dominant measure of adult individual differences in analytic vs. intuitive cognitive style. The task was designed to measure a person's tendency to override and inhibit an intuitive response that is incorrect and engage in deliberate reflection that leads to a correct response. The CRT is a meaningful predictor of a diverse range of adult psychological and behavioral outcomes, including conceptual change in science and math learning (Shtulman & McCallum, 2014; Gómez-Chacón et al., 2014). The present research employed a newly developed CRT for children, the CRT-D (Young et al., 2018), to …

Abstract
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) has been classified as the most common form of dementia. Primary health care providers are usually the first clinicians to whom individuals present with symptoms of dementia. By 2050, it is expected that as many as 13.8 million Americans will be living with AD, and millions more will be placed in the challenging role of providing care for these individuals. However, studies continue to show that dementia is often underdiagnosed and under detected. The purpose of the study was to systematically inquire about the impact of AD education on level of knowledge about AD among primary …

The Relationship Between Length Of Community Tenure And Residents’ Volunteering At Community Events: Results From The Metro Atlanta Speaks Survey, Ramesh Ghimire, Jim Skinner
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Volunteering at community events could be associated with length of community tenure as residents with longer years of “tenure” might have a greater sense of community belonging, greater social capital (e.g. social networks and trust), and greater familiarity with regional cultures, compared to new residents. Using the Metro Atlanta Speaks survey conducted in 2015 and 2016, this study finds that residents’ volunteering at community events is significantly and positively associated with their length of community tenure in metro Atlanta counties. Other sociodemographic characteristics, such as age, gender, education, income, and children in the household also significantly influence residents’ volunteering at …
