Superintendents And The Micropolitics Of Innovation In Rural School Districts, Catherine Nunn Lawless
Superintendents And The Micropolitics Of Innovation In Rural School Districts, Catherine Nunn Lawless
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Research shows that public school districts that follow traditional means of instruction and assessment are insufficiently preparing students for success in the today’s global world. As a result, students are entering into higher education institutions and the workforce without the necessary skills to succeed in these 21st century environments. Extant literature suggest that there is a broad consensus on this perspective in public and private sectors nationally and globally. Evidence shows that some school district superintendents and their respective school boards continue to focus on improving the current practices and student academic performance and assessment. Other instructional leaders recognize …

Spheres Of Simultaneity In Adriana Lisboa’S Novel Hanói, Marguerite Itamar Harrison
Spheres Of Simultaneity In Adriana Lisboa’S Novel Hanói, Marguerite Itamar Harrison
Spanish and Portuguese: Faculty Publications
This essay has as its focus the interweaving of immigrant life stories and layers of human spaces in Adriana Lisboa’s novel Hanói (2013). Relying on Ana Martins Marques’ map-bending poems from Cartografias and on Doreen Massey’s geographical concepts of “multiple trajectories” and “spheres of dynamic simultaneity” articulated in For Space, I analyze the sense of place in the novel, as well as the presence of elements denoting belonging, displacement and un-belonging, especially from the point of view of the two main characters and their interconnecting, yet disparate, worlds.

Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Libraries are digitizing their collections of maps from all eras, generating increasingly large online collections of historical cartographic resources. Aligning such maps to a modern geographic coordinate system greatly increases their utility. This work presents a method for such automatic georeferencing, matching raster image content to GIS vector coordinate data. Given an approximate initial alignment that has already been projected from a spherical geographic coordinate system to a Cartesian map coordinate system, a probabilistic shape-matching scheme determines an optimized match between the GIS contours and ink in the binarized map image. Us- ing an evaluation set of 20 historical maps …

A Region Recovers: Planning For Resilience After Superstorm Sandy, Donovan Finn, Divya Chandrasekhar, Yu Xiao
School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications
2012’s Superstorm Sandy had a devastating impact on the New York City metropolitan region, including the suburban Long Island coast and the New Jersey shore. Given the size, density, complexity, and diversity of the region, many approaches have been used to address post-storm recovery. Planning has been central to these efforts. Using in-depth interviews with recovery stakeholders, this analysis of the planning responses to Sandy illustrates what an emergent model of resilient recovery planning looks like and highlights the kinds of resources and approaches that help facilitate this approach. We argue that preexisting planning capacity, strong political leadership, and nongovernmental …

Developing Team Creativity: The Influence Of Psychological Safety And Relation-Oriented Shared Leadership, Soo Jeoung Han, Yunsoo Lee, Michael Beyerlein
Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study examines the effects of a psychosocially safe environment and two types of shared leadership on project team creativity. We focused on specific dimensions of shared leadership to examine their association with creative outcomes. To measure the dimensions, we conducted a survey of 260 graduate and undergraduate students working in project teams at a large Southwestern university. We found that a psychologically safe environment enabled team members to perform task-oriented and relation-oriented tasks. However, only relation-oriented shared leadership positively influenced team creativity. Based on our findings, we provided research and practical implications, as well as study limitations and future …
Laïcité And The Discrimination Of Maghrebi Muslims In France (2019), Emi Montenegro
Laïcité And The Discrimination Of Maghrebi Muslims In France (2019), Emi Montenegro
International Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper addresses the discriminatory features and applications of laïcité in France, specifically as they pertain to French Muslims of Maghrebi descent. It seeks to answer why Muslims are targeted by policies regarding laïcité and by what means. This is done by analyzing how laïcité has been used, at times, to include populations and at other times to exclude certain populations. By using a postcolonial theory as a guiding theoretical approach, this research addresses the power imbalance and biases present in discussions surrounding laïcité’s uses. This paper argues that the reasons for laïcité’s effectiveness in othering French Muslims of Maghrebi …

Articles & Book Chapters
The overarching objective of this paper is to shine a Third World
Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) torchlight on the ILO’s social
justice discourse and praxis to find out what can be seen, or seen in a new
light, or seen in a different way, when the TWAIL approach is adopted,
and to comment on the significance of our findings, if any. To this end,
the paper pursues two specific and intertwined goals, namely: (i) to analytically
tease out the similarities and differences between TWAIL’s avowedly
(global) social justice discourse and praxis and its ILO counterpart; and (ii)
to, in …

Ghana has declared support for the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number seven which most importantly target ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services. This target presents a formidable challenge to Ghana because the country still relies mainly on traditional biomass as its primary source of energy coupled with a chronically fragile hydropower sector. In this study, we assess Ghana’s potential in achieving sustainable goal number seven. Specifically, we comprehensively review the breakthroughs and impediments Ghana has experienced in its efforts towards improving its renewable energy potential. We note that while Ghana has made significant stride toward …

Understanding The Politics Of Knowledge And How It Unfolds In The United States: The Mexican American Studies Program, And The Ethnic Studies Ban In Tucson Az, Jorge Rodriguez
Education Faculty Articles and Research
The increasingly diverse demographics can no longer submit to the old paradigms and Eurocentric views behind westernized conceptions of learning and instruction (Grande, 2015). Scholars point to disengagement of marginalized communities of color from the schooling environment and express concerns over national curricula as being non-relevant to the historical and social-cultural realities of these communities in the United States (Ladson-Billings, 1995, 2009). Within this paradigm, notions of success are often measured by cognitive benchmarks like grades, GPA, graduation rates, and standardized test scores. By 2044, more than half of all Americans are projected to belong to a minority group, and, …

To determine the effect of harvest method and ammoniation on both in vivo and in vitro digestibility of corn residue, six corn residue treatments consisting of three different harvest methods either with or without anhydrous ammonia chemical treatment (5.5% of dry matter [DM]) were evaluated. The harvest methods included conventional rake-and-bale (CONV) and New Holland Cornrower with eight rows (8ROW) or two rows (2ROW) of corn stalks chopped into the windrow containing the tailings (leaf, husk, and upper stem) from eight rows of harvested corn (ammoniated bales of each harvest method resulted in treatments COVAM, 8RAM, and 2RAM). Nine crossbred …
Study On Technology And Learning, Jeremy Bramwell
Study On Technology And Learning, Jeremy Bramwell
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this research thesis is to investigate technologies effects on learning. Specifically the researchers studied the usability of intelligent personal assistant-enabled devices for learning assistance. It is assumed that using technology in educational context helps both students and educators because there is a positive effect on engagement which increases learning curves. Although, this is not always the case. The present study yielded results that were not consistent with the assumption that using any type of technology as an aid for learning has a positive effect. Further research will seek to investigate other intelligent personal assistant devices for classroom …
