INTIMAL is an interactive system for relational listening, which integrates physical-virtual interfaces for people to sonically improvise between distant locations. The aim is to embrace two key aspects in the context of human migration: the sense of place and the sense of presence. This paper reflects on the use of INTIMAL in a long-distance improvisation between the cities of Oslo, Barcelona and London in May 2019. This improvisation was performed by nine Colombian migrant women, who had been involved in a research process using the Deep Listening® practice developed by Pauline Oliveros. Here we describe the performance setting and the …

emperatures (SST), salinity, carbonate chemistry, and acidity. Over the last half-century, some reef communities have been disappearing at an alarming pace. This study focuses on the Gulf of Mexico, where the majority of shallow coral reefs are reported to be in poor or fair condition. We analyze the RCP8.5 ensemble of the Community Earth System Model v1.2 to identify monthly-to-decadal trends in Gulf of Mexico SST. Secondly, we examine projected changes in ocean pH, carbonate saturation state, and salinity in the same coupled model simulations. We find that the joint impacts of predicted higher temperatures and changes in ocean acidification …

Language, Indigenous Peoples, And The Right To Self-Determination, Noelle Higgins, Gerard Maguire Nov 2019

Language, Indigenous Peoples, And The Right To Self-Determination, Noelle Higgins, Gerard Maguire

New England Journal of Public Policy

Language has always played a significant role in the colonization of peoples as an instrument of subjugation and homogenization. It has been used to control nondominant groups, including Indigenous peoples, often leading to their exclusion or assimilation. Many Indigenous groups, however, use language as a tool to connect the members of their community, to assert their group identity, and to preserve their culture. Thus, language has been used both as a means of oppression and as a mobilizer of Indigenous groups in their struggles for national recognition. Recognizing the significance of language in the identity and culture of Indigenous peoples, …

Humpback Whale Movements And Behavior In Response To Whale-Watching Vessels In Juneau, Ak, Alicia Schuler, Sarah Piwetz, Jacopo Di Clemente, David Steckler, Franz Mueter, Heidi C. Pearson

Faculty, Staff, and Students

The whale-watching industry in Juneau, Alaska relies primarily on the presence of North Pacific humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). To meet demands from the rapidly growing tourism industry, the number of whale-watching vessels in this region has tripled over the last 18 years. As a result, increased vessel presence could have negative effects on humpback whales, ranging from short-term behavioral disturbance to long-term impacts. The current humpback whale viewing regulations are outdated and may not be as effective as they were 18 years ago, when both the whale-watching industry and humpback whale population were smaller. The present study assessed how humpback …

Extending Lifetime Of Sensor Networks Based On Sleep-Scheduled Routing Algorithm, Zhuojin Pan, Stuart D., Luo Zhen, Yang Hua Nov 2019

Extending Lifetime Of Sensor Networks Based On Sleep-Scheduled Routing Algorithm, Zhuojin Pan, Stuart D., Luo Zhen, Yang Hua

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to minimize energy consumption of sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks, this paper presents an Energy Efficient Sleep-Scheduled Tree-Based Routing Protocol (EESSTBRP) that modifies the chain formation in PEGASIS to create a set of paired and unpaired nodes in the network based on a distance and sensing range threshold. The paired nodes switch between active and sleep modes so as to remove redundant data and save battery power. To minimize energy consumption as nodes switching between the modes, this scheme considers the transitioning to be done based on a point of near depletion of the nodes’ residual …

Reconstructing Geographic And Trophic Histories Of Fish Using Bulk And Compound-Specific Stable Isotopes From Eye Lenses, Amy A. Wallace Nov 2019

Reconstructing Geographic And Trophic Histories Of Fish Using Bulk And Compound-Specific Stable Isotopes From Eye Lenses, Amy A. Wallace

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present research examined the viability and utility of eye lenses as a source of lifetime stable-isotope records in fish. It is presented in three sections. The first section compared bulk isotopic variation (bulk analysis) within fish eye-lenses at two temporal resolutions and compared patterns obtained from left and right eyes. The first temporal resolution was lower in an attempt to expose broad-scale isotopic changes during life while reducing effort and cost. This approach did reveal lifetime patterns, but tended to miss certain life events, particularly during early life. The second resolution was higher and provided detail that was missed …

Disaster Effect Induced By Asian Water Tower Change And Mitigation Strategies, Cui Peng, Guo Xiaojun, Jiang Tianhai, Zhang Guotao, Jin Wen

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Tibetan Plateau, known as the "Asian Water Tower", has complex natural environment, significant climate differences, diverse landforms, developed glaciers, and strong crustal uplift and river undercut. It is highly prone to natural hazards, such as debris flow, flash flood, and glacial lakes outburst, which often happen suddenly, widely, causing serious damages and often with chained effects. They are mainly distributed along the fault zones and deep-incised valleys, and controlled by climatic and local hydrothermal conditions of horizontal and vertical zonality. Besides, the types of hazards, predisposing factors, and responses to climate change at different altitudes are different. Temperature and precipitation …

Nair, Eric Rappin, Emily Foshee, Warren Smith, Roger A. Pielke Sr., Rezaul Mamood, Jonathan L. Case, Clay B. Blankenship, Marshall Shepherd, Joseph A. Santanello, Dev Niyogi

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Extreme flooding over southern Louisiana in mid-August of 2016 resulted from an unusual tropical low that formed and intensified over land. We used numerical experiments to highlight the role of the ‘Brown Ocean’ effect (where saturated soils function similar to a warm ocean surface) on intensification and it’s modulation by land cover change. A numerical modeling experiment that successfully captured the flood event (control) was modified to alter moisture availability by converting wetlands to open water, wet croplands, and dry croplands. Storm evolution in the control experiment with wet antecedent soils most resembles tropical lows that form and intensify over …

Race, Geography, And News Coverage Of The Opioid Epidemic, Nicholas B. Robert Nov 2019

Race, Geography, And News Coverage Of The Opioid Epidemic, Nicholas B. Robert

LSU Master's Theses

The opioid epidemic is the deadliest drug epidemic in United States history. During the early stages of the epidemic, the focus was on white victims in rural and suburban areas. Using the geo-ethnic framework developed from immigration research, this study examines if geography and race impacted the framing of the opioid epidemic in newspapers. The study finds there to be a low level of geo-ethnic influenced framing in news coverage of the opioid epidemic from 2016-2018.

The Effects Of Forced Migration On The Houma Of Louisiana, Jessica R. Parfait Nov 2019

The Effects Of Forced Migration On The Houma Of Louisiana, Jessica R. Parfait

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis seeks to understand the effects of multiple forced migrations on the Indigenous Houma of southern Louisiana. The causes of these migrations have taken many forms such as the dispossession of land and relocating for access to resources. Through ethnographic interviews and historic research, I seek to critically engage the past to understand how it has molded the present and the lives of tribal citizens. I evaluate the power dynamics enacted upon the Houma who have recorded contact with Europeans dating to 1686 but have never been recognized as a sovereign entity by the United States.

Cross-Country Evidence Of Corruption Spillovers To Formal And Informal Entrepreneurship, Aziz N. Berdiev, James Saunoris Nov 2019

Cross-Country Evidence Of Corruption Spillovers To Formal And Informal Entrepreneurship, Aziz N. Berdiev, James Saunoris

Economics Faculty Journal Articles

Using cross‐country data this paper examines the spillovers of corruption to formal and informal entrepreneurship in neighboring countries. Whereas research has shown that entrepreneurs move underground to escape corruption, we argue that entrepreneurs may also seek refuge in neighboring countries. Indeed, the empirical results show that in response to a ceteris paribus increase in corruption in neighboring countries formal entrepreneurship increases in the home country with no effect on informal entrepreneurship. This is consistent with entrepreneurs circumventing corrupt public officials by immigrating to countries with presumably less corruption. These results withstand a battery of robustness checks. Commercials As Social Studies Curriculum: Bridging Content & Media Literacy, Shanedra D. Nowell Nov 2019

Commercials As Social Studies Curriculum: Bridging Content & Media Literacy, Shanedra D. Nowell

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This essay explores ways television commercials can teach both media literacy skills and social studies content knowledge. Because of their brevity and concise messages, commercials offer teachers a wide assortment of engaging, content focused lesson topics that can be used to introduce new ideas, as writing or discussion prompts to further explore concepts, or as creative media projects to assess the content and media literacy knowledge. I examine different approaches to integrate commercials into social studies classes and include resources to guide students through deconstructing commercials, understanding advertisers’ creative techniques and appeals, and creating their own commercials.

Abolish Censorship And Adopt Critical Media Literacy: A Proactive Approach To Media And Youth In The Middle East, Abeer Alnajjar Nov 2019

Abolish Censorship And Adopt Critical Media Literacy: A Proactive Approach To Media And Youth In The Middle East, Abeer Alnajjar

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This paper challenges the dominant patronizing approach to youth and media in the Middle East and argues that the calls for censorship of youth media exposure are obsolete and counterproductive. It argues that although censorship advocates have a legitimate concern over media risks, their approaches are ineffective, short-lived and alienating, disregarding the potential that media hold for young people. The author believes that elites in MENA should shift their focus to empower youth to use media to learn; to voice their worldviews and experiences; and to work for the betterment of themselves and their societies. The paper recommends two strategies:1) …

A Method To Analyze Similarities Of Eye Movements: A Giscience Based Spatiotemporal Approach, Mehrdad Vaziri Nov 2019

A Method To Analyze Similarities Of Eye Movements: A Giscience Based Spatiotemporal Approach, Mehrdad Vaziri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Similarity analysis is the subject of several studies that primarily collect, process, and analyze movement data of various types, including animals, humans, vehicles, hurricanes, and eye tracking. The movement studies often focus on characteristics of a mobile entity (moving object) over time and space. Such studies usually are interested in tracking the changes to the moving object. Therefore, the size of the object becomes irrelevant. Each mobile object is considered a moving point through time and space. The points have all two attributes in common which are locations and timestamp of those locations. Despite the similarities between the movement datasets, …

An Empirical Demonstration Of The Case-Management Approach To Rehabilitation Of Multiply Sensorially Disabled Clients, Joel D. Ziev, Pearl I. Johnson, Jerome D. Schein, David Peikoff Nov 2019

An Empirical Demonstration Of The Case-Management Approach To Rehabilitation Of Multiply Sensorially Disabled Clients, Joel D. Ziev, Pearl I. Johnson, Jerome D. Schein, David Peikoff

JADARA

In one year, five Case Managers provided a wide range of rehabilitation services directly to 133 multiply sensorially disabled clients (the target group) and indirectly to 212 other target clients. The Case Managers encouraged 70 agencies to become interested in, and in some cases to initiate services to, target clients. In addition to providing a considerable amount of direct services, the project staff laid the foundation for continuing improvement in target clients' welfare, by disseminating knowledge other service providers and encouraging them to raise their expectations of rehabilitation outcomes for the target group. Although long-term benefits cannot be assessed in …

Sample Transfer Optimization With Adaptive Deep Neural Network, Hemanta Sapkota, Md Arifuzzaman, Engin Arslan Nov 2019

Sample Transfer Optimization With Adaptive Deep Neural Network, Hemanta Sapkota, Md Arifuzzaman, Engin Arslan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Application-layer transfer configurations play a crucial role in achieving desirable performance in high-speed networks. However, finding the optimal configuration for a given transfer task is a difficult problem as it depends on various factors including dataset characteristics, network settings, and background traffic. The state-of-the-art transfer tuning solutions rely on real-time sample transfers to evaluate various configurations and estimate the optimal one. However, existing approaches to run sample transfers incur high delay and measurement errors, thus significantly limit the efficiency of the transfer tuning algorithms. In this paper, we introduce adaptive feed forward deep neural network (DNN) to minimize the error …

A Mid-Decade Update On Amish Settlement Growth, Joseph Donnermeyer, Cory Anderson Nov 2019

A Mid-Decade Update On Amish Settlement Growth, Joseph Donnermeyer, Cory Anderson

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The rapid growth of the Amish population brings a concomitant growth of new settlements. This research note provides a mid-century report on new Amish settlement growth in North America, emphasizing that the vast percentage of today's extant settlements have been established in the very recent past. As settlements in-fill around decades-old settlements, spatially distinctive Amish regions are taking shape, both in states of historic settlement and neighboring states. The apparent recent success of geographically outlying settlements is also of note, given the unequivocal failure of such settlements in the more distant past.
