Judge In Israel Has Ruled That Emoji Can Prove Intent In A Landlord/Tenant Case, Carly Ben-Yishay Feb 2019

Judge In Israel Has Ruled That Emoji Can Prove Intent In A Landlord/Tenant Case, Carly Ben-Yishay

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

Emojis have become ubiquitous in modern digital communication by individuals all over the world. The crux of the issue is that emojis can have a profound impact on the way we communicate. The inclusion of a single emoji can alter the meaning of the accompanying text. Alexandre Loktonov, an expert on hieroglyphics at the Kluge Center, likens emojis to what are known as “determinatives” in Egyptian hieroglyphics, or “signs, which without having a phonetic value on their own, can ‘color’ the meaning of the preceding work of phrase.” In recent years, the nature of emojis has been addressed in several …

Seismic Tremor Reveals Spatial Organization And Temporal Changes Of Subglacial Water System, Margot E. Vore, Timothy Bartholomaus, J. Paul Winberry, Jacob I. Walter, Jason M. Amundson

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Subglacial water flow impacts glacier dynamics and shapes the subglacial environment. However, due to the challenges of observing glacier beds, the spatial organization of subglacial water systems and the time scales of conduit evolution and migration are largely unknown. To address these questions, we analyze 1.5‐ to 10‐Hz seismic tremor that we associate with subglacial water flow, that is, glaciohydraulic tremor, at Taku Glacier, Alaska, throughout the 2016 melt season. We use frequency‐dependent polarization analysis to estimate glaciohydraulic tremor propagation direction (related to the subglacial conduit location) and a degree day melt model to monitor variations in melt‐water input. We …

Monitoring 40-Year Lake Area Changes Of The Qaidam Basin, Tibetan Plateau, Using Landsat Time Series, Huiying Li, Dehua Mao, Xiaoyan Li, Zongming Wang, Cuizhen Wang

Faculty Publications

Areal changes of high-altitude inland lakes on the Qaidam Basin (QB) of the Tibetan Plateau are reliable indicators of climate change and anthropogenic disturbance. Due to the physical difficulties to access, our knowledge of the spatial patterns and processes of climatic and human impacts on the Basin has been limited. Focusing on lake area changes, this study used long-term Landsat images to map the patterns of lakes and glaciers in 1977, 1990, 2000, and 2015, and to monitor the spatially explicit changes of lakes between 1977 and 2015. Results revealed that the total number of lakes (area > 0.5 km2 ) …

A Study Of Precolonial Urban Africa, Molly Cooper Feb 2019

A Study Of Precolonial Urban Africa, Molly Cooper

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Africa’s precolonial era of urban development lasted from approximately 3000 BC until the colonial era began in the sixteenth century AD. During this period, urban centers were built in regions of high ecological and economic potential, such as the Mediterranean coast, the Nile towns of Nubia, West Africa, and the Sub-Saharan region of Africa. Studying key cities in each of these areas demonstrates the rich history of precolonial Africa as well as the continued influence of these sophisticated cultures. Using historical records, archeological findings, and analysis of urban trends of cities such as Carthage, Meroe, Djenne, and the Great Zimbabwe, …

Whatsapp And Mobile Money Towards Successful Crowdfunding And Social Change: A Kenyan Case., Frankline Bradly Matanji

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Use of WhatsApp as a social media technology and M-pesa, a mobile money service for crowdfunding in Kenya are proliferating at an incredible pace. Crowdfunding helps communities organize for effective participation in social and economic development and empowerment by making sure that members of the community get to benefit from services such as access to social amenities and better infrastructure which would not have been available if the community members were to wait for the government to provide the services. This method is popularly being used at Kisii University for students’ retention and providing social welfare to students, their parents …

The Lives Of H-2b Workers In The Trump Era: An Anthropological Perspective On Immigration, Jade Kluver

Journal of International Women's Studies

The purpose of this ethnographic study is to describe the effects of the Trump Administration’s change in immigration policies on Romanian H-2B workers in South Florida. The effects of administration change on the H-2B program is generally defined within three themes that emerged from my research: The change in the concept of cultural space and how enforcement plays a role in the creation of boundaries; how policy change has an influence on migrant workers’ concept of identity and belonging; and lastly, how the program and outlying forces create a culture of uncertainty and fear. The article is based on three …

Sustainable Women’S Entrepreneurship: A View From Two Brics Nations, Obianuju (Uju) E. Okeke-Uzodike

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women in Africa are poorer, less educated, and enjoy less access to jobs and opportunities than men. While that is true for women around the world, the situation in contemporary Africa appears deeper. Earlier neo-classical economists viewed women as irrational economic agents, but boosted by the intellectual activities of feminist economists that highlighted the gender bias of mainstream economics. The aid and development agencies such as the World Bank and UNDP have committed to poverty reduction by embracing and strengthening the idea of holistic human development to eliminate gender-related inequality. The concept is well spelt out in the national/regional policy …

The Priming Of Arab-Israeli Stereotypes: How News Stories May Enhance Or Inhibit Audience Stereotypes, Erika Katherine Johnson

Journal of International Women's Studies

The goal of this study was to understand how news stories about Arab and Israeli women prime stereotypes in Americans, extending research on priming and ethnic media representation. A 2 (female target ethnicity: Arab and Israeli) x 3 (depiction type: prototypical, non-prototypical, and control) x 3 (multiple messages) mixed factorial design was conducted to examine how depiction and ethnicity in news story stimuli would interact with stereotype activation and accuracy (N = 107). Results showed that participants exhibited higher stereotyping after reading prototypical stories about Arab women and after they were not primed by stories. Also, participants who read non-prototypical …

Estranged Labour On The Global Assembly Line? ‘Sewing Girls’ Of Post-Colonial Garment Factories In Sri Lanka, Prajna Seneviratne

Journal of International Women's Studies

Inspired by the Marxian conceptualization of ‘estranged labour’, this paper seeks to explore the phenomenon of ‘sewing girls’ of global garment factories in Sri Lanka leaving waged work after a relatively short span of time, drawing on this trend of thought. Even though issues surrounding female labour in the global garment industry are widely researched, there is little or no evidence of existing literature attempting to place the empirical issues within a Marxist conceptual framework. It is in this context that this paper, which takes on a methodological approach of ethnography from a feminist perspective attempts to narrate the ‘stories’ …

The Ethics Of Human-Animal Relationships And Public Discourse: A Case Study Of Lions Bred For Their Bones, Peter Coals, Dawn Burnham, Andrew Loveridge, David W. Macdonald, Michael 'T Sas-Rolfes, Vivvienne Williams, John A. Vucetich

College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications

Conservation and natural resource management are increasingly attending the ethical elements of public decisions. Ethical considerations are challenging, in part, because they typically require accounting for the moral consideration of various human and nonhuman forms of life, whose interests sometimes conflict (or seem to conflict). A valuable tool for such evaluations is the formal analysis of ethical arguments. An ethical argument is a collection of premises, logically interrelated, to yield a conclusion that can be expressed in the form, “We ought to…” According to the rules of logic, a conclusion is supported by an argument if all its …

1925 - Handbook Of The Indians Of California, A. L. Kroeber

Government Documents and Publications

This book by a leading American anthropologist includes demographics, linguistic relations, social structures, folkways, religion, material culture, and much more. It includes surveys of the Yurok, Pomo, Maidu, Yokuts, and Mohave, as well as 479 illustrations and 40 maps. The book is a history in that it tries to reconstruct and present the scheme within which these people in ancient and more recent times lived their lives. It is concerned with their civilization—at all events the appearance they presented on discovery, and whenever possible an unraveling, from such indications as analysis and comparison now and then afford, of the changes …

Administrative Oversight: Justice Gorsuch’S Patent Opinions, The Ptab, And Antagonism Toward The Administrative State, Daniel D. Kim, Jonathan Stroud

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

In his first term, Justice Neil Gorsuch has made a surprisingly forceful impact on, of all things, patent law—and even more unlikely, the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s adjudicatory arm, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Was there any way to predict, from his 10th Circuit opinions below, that he would author opinions in all three patent cases in his first term? Was this attention the result of deeply submerged but long-felt opinions on patent law, or rather a result of his sharp distrust of administrative overreach? We analyze 10th Circuit and Supreme Court opinions authored by Justice Gorsuch, …

Autoxidation Of The Sea Ice Biomarker Proxy Ipso 25 In The Near-Surface Oxic Layers Of Arctic And Antarctic Sediments, Jean François Rontani, Lukas Smik, Simon T. Belt

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© 2019 Over the last decade or so, the mono- and di-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) lipids IP 25 (Ice Proxy with 25 carbon atoms) and IPSO 25 (Ice Proxy for the Southern Ocean with 25 carbon atoms) have emerged as useful proxies for sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic, respectively. A more complete understanding of their respective proxy signatures, however, requires more detailed knowledge of their stability in the water column and in sediments. In the current study, we focused on the autoxidation of IPSO 25 , first by performing laboratory-based oxidation reactions on a purified sample and …

The Changing Face Of The Mediterranean–Land Cover, Demography And Environmental Change: Introduction And Overview, Andrew Bevan, Alessio Palmisano, Jessie Woodbridge, Ralph Fyfe, Neil Roberts, Stephen Shennan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper introduces a special issue on The Changing Face of the Mediterranean: Land Cover, Demography, and Environmental Change, which brings together up-to-date regional or thematic perspectives on major long-term trends in Mediterranean human–environment relations. Particularly, important insights are provided by palynology to reconstruct past vegetation and land cover, and archaeology to establish long-term demographic trends, but with further significant input from palaeoclimatology, palaeofire research and geomorphology. Here, we introduce the rationale behind this pan-Mediterranean research initiative, outline its major sources of evidence and method, and describe how individual submissions work to complement one another.

Seed dispersal enables plants to reach hospitable germination sites and escape natural enemies. Understanding when and how much seed dispersal matters to plant fitness is critical for understanding plant population and community dynamics. At the same time, the complexity of factors that determine if a seed will be successfully dispersed and subsequently develop into a reproductive plant is daunting. Quantifying all factors that may influence seed dispersal effectiveness for any potential seed-vector relationship would require an unrealistically large amount of time, materials and financial resources. On the other hand, being able to make dispersal predictions is critical for predicting whether …

The Relationship Of The Merchant Marine To National Power, George D. Synon

Naval War College Review

In considering the relation of the Merchant Marine to national power, it is perhaps automatic for members of the Armed Forces to regard a large fleet of commercial shipping as indispensible to the security of the United States.
