1912 - The Missions And Missionaries Of California, Vol. Ii, Upper California, Part I, General History, Zephyrin Engelhardt
Franciscan Publications
Volume II was a general accounting of the missions and missionaries in Upper California. Section I addressed the establishment and administration of the missions by Fr. Junípero Serra. Section II covered the administration of Fr. Fermín Francisco de Lasuén and Fr. Estevan Tapis. The author posited that the real object of the conquest and occupation of Alta California was not the establishment of the Catholic faith in California but rather to fund expeditions and secure the land from the Russians and others who were making expeditions in the region. Engelhardt's evidence was the fact that the Spanish government seized and …

Trends In Pennsylvania 8th And 11th Grade Student Test Performance Since The Common Core Implementation, Lisa S. Hoban
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
The purpose of this research study was to explore trends in student test performance since the Common Core implementation in 8th and 11th grades in Pennsylvania. After receiving failing grades for the Pennsylvania State Standards when compared with other states, legislators adopted the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards in 2013. Much of this decision was grounded in the belief that with new standards, Pennsylvania student test scores would move from 35-45% proficiency levels in Reading and Math to 100% proficiency (Hamilton, 2007).
Research questions focused on the trends in students’ scores over time as reported by the PSSA …

Neoliberal Urbanism As ‘Strategic Coupling’ To Global Chains: Port Infrastructure And The Role Of Economic Impact Studies, David Jaffee
Neoliberal Urbanism As ‘Strategic Coupling’ To Global Chains: Port Infrastructure And The Role Of Economic Impact Studies, David Jaffee
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
Abstract This paper identifies and delineates a variant of neoliberal urbanism that grounds city-region economic development on the ability to gain financial and public support for large-scale infrastructure projects advancing particular forms of capital accumulation. More specifically, the focus is on the effort of city-regions to strategically exploit and expand geographic and physical assets to capture economic benefits associated with global value chains through the expansion of maritime ports. This development strategy requires sizable public investments in port infrastructure. In order to justify and convince the public and political officials of the wisdom of such investments, port officials commission economic …

Multifractality Of Posture Modulates Multisensory Perception Of Stand-On-Ability, Jonathan K. Doyon, Alen Hajnal, Tyler Surber, Joseph D. Clark, Damian G. Kelty-Stephen

By definition, perception is a multisensory process that unfolds in time as a complex sequence of exploratory activities of the organism. In such a system perception and action are integrated, and multiple energy arrays are available simultaneously. Perception of affordances interweaves sensory and motor activities into meaningful behavior given task constraints. The present contribution offers insight into the manner in which perception and action usher the organism through competent functional apprehension of its surroundings. We propose that the tensegrity structure of the body, manifested via multifractality of exploratory bodily movements informs perception of affordances. The affordance of stand-on-ability of ground …

Get Connected: Lessons Shared From The Pnw-Garlic Mustard Working Group, Michelle Delepine
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is an ODA-listed class B noxious weed and threatens many types of ecosystems west of the Cascade Range, as well as riparian corridors east of the Cascades. Starting in 2014, a self-organized collaboration called the Pacific Northwest Garlic Mustard Working Group has brought together invasive plant managers from across Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia to share observations, best management practices, prevention techniques, survey methodologies and outreach strategies across the region. This has resulted in developing shared outreach and prevention products, a cross-jurisdictional Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy, regional maps, and a collaborative understanding of management practices …

Arthur: God And Hero In Avalon, Christopher R. Fee
Arthur: God And Hero In Avalon, Christopher R. Fee
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
For fifteen centuries, legends of King Arthur have inspired generations. In the misty past of a Britain under siege, half-remembered events became shrouded in ancient myth and folklore. The resulting tales were told and retold, until over time Arthur, Camelot, Avalon, the Round Table, the Holy Grail, Excalibur, Lancelot and Guinevere all became instantly recognizable icons. Along the way, Arthur’s life and times were recast in the mould of the hero’s journey: his miraculous conception at Tintagel through the magical intercession of his shaman guide, Merlin; the childhood deed of pulling the Sword from the Stone through which Arthur was …

After Hurricane Irma, disaster capitalism threatens cultural heritage in Barbuda. A year and a half after the storm hit, efforts to exploit Barbuda to benefit the rich and powerful threaten to erode culture, identity, and traditional land relations in the name of “development.”

Seasonal Variation Of Contaminant Concentrations In Wastewater Treatment Works Effluents And River Waters., S. D.W. Comber, M. J. Gardner, B. Ellor
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Results are presented for 170 wastewater treatment works sites (20 per substance in influent, effluent and 36 per substance in river water upstream and downstream of the WwTW discharge) over a period of two years between 2015 and 2017; this comprises data for approximately 3000 samples for effluent and 6000 for river samples taken downstream of effluent discharges. Seasonal trends in contaminant concentrations for several substances are reported. Two clear patterns of seasonal variation are proposed over and above all of the variables associated with environmental data including process technology, dilution and geography. Firstly, variation of riverine concentrations caused by …

Contribution Of Snowfall From Diverse Synoptic Conditions In The Catskill/Delaware Watershed Of New York State, Zachary J. Suriano, Daniel J. Leathers, Dorothy K. Hall, Allan Frei
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Snowfall in the six basins of the Catskill/Delaware Watershed in south‐central New York State historically contributes roughly 20–30% of the water resources derived from the watershed for use in the New York City water supply. The watershed regularly experiences snowfall from three distinctive weather patterns: coastal mid‐latitude cyclones, overrunning systems, and lake‐effect or Great Lakes enhanced storms. Using synoptic weather classification techniques, these distinct regional atmospheric patterns impacting the watershed are isolated and analysed in conjunction with daily snowfall observations from 1960 to 2009 to allow the influence of each synoptic weather pattern on snowfall to be evaluated independently.

Space And Place In Rural Program Implementation: A Look At Two Early College Programs In Ohio, Ann Allen, J. Kessa Roberts
Space And Place In Rural Program Implementation: A Look At Two Early College Programs In Ohio, Ann Allen, J. Kessa Roberts
The Rural Educator
Employing concepts of place and space, we consider the implementation of Early College initiatives in two small school districts in Ohio, situated in very different regions of the state. One is a rural district near the foothills of Appalachia, and the other is a small town district on the shores of Lake Erie. The paper examines data collected through a state-wide evaluation project. Our analysis suggests that where a school is located matters to the kinds of resources, opportunities and constrains it has for implementing state programs. Resources like transportation, access to college partners, and even proximity to other school …
