Death Of A Posthuman, David Bullard, Carolina Hasbun Elias
Death Of A Posthuman, David Bullard, Carolina Hasbun Elias
Architecture Senior Theses
Some of the first marks humans left on the planet were the architectures of death and remembrance. From the pyramids of Ancient Egypt to the burial landscapes of the 20th century, today’s architecture of death manifests itself mainly as cemeteries and crematoriums. However, we contend the culture of death in the 21st century has evolved to demand an architecture that acknowledges changes in its culture and its impact on the natural and technological environment. Humans are no longer just human. Our recent evolution has presented two realities, to which the discipline of architecture needs to respond. First, the split presence …

Dipl 6704 Na Economic Development Of Africa, Fredline M’Cormack-Hale Phd
Diplomacy Syllabi
Of the four major less developed regions in the world (East and South Asia, Latin America and Africa), Sub-Saharan Africa (hereafter SSA) has performed the worst economically since 1975. Explaining this poor economic development has occupied development theorists, aid agencies, international institutions and African governments and people alike. The purpose of this course is to examine the reasons advanced to explain the under-development of Africa through a primarily political economy framework, as the African continent is testament to the fact that economic development is affected by political contexts. We will explore explanations that include history (the legacy of a colonial …

Analysis Of 2017 Multi-Agency Field Campaign Data For Wintertime Surface Pollution In The Cache Valley Of Utah, Gerardo Diaz Jr.
Analysis Of 2017 Multi-Agency Field Campaign Data For Wintertime Surface Pollution In The Cache Valley Of Utah, Gerardo Diaz Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Atmospheric motions resulting from rising airborne parcels help to scatter emissions, including PM, away from their sources, decreasing local pollution levels. However this pattern shifts during the wintertime, as cold air damming and inversion layers create stable conditions that limit the vertical transport of air masses. Both point and area sources of emissions currently dot the western United States and are responsible for the production of the vast majority of agricultural pollution in the region. At the same time, population-growth has resulted in an ever-increasing amount of urbansource emissions. The entrapment of PM, which are produced when a wide array …

Holidays In The Empire (Hist 32) Syllabus, Megan Brown
Digital Humanities Curricular Development
From seedy bars to holy sites, Europeans journeyed to colonized spaces to encounter people and places they would never see at home. This class examines how European peoples participated in the imperial project through their travels. It tackles a history of Europe and empire through different frameworks (Orientalism, gender studies…) and methods (mainly primary source analysis and Web-based tools). Students will examine how Europeans “experienced” empire through travel, including safaris, sex tourism, and mission work. This will include a brief study of European travel themes, such as the Grand Tour, transportation technology, and mass tourism, with our focus mainly on …

Not Just Air Pollution: How The Clean Air Act Can Fix Zoning, Transportation, And Afforadable Housing, Nicholas D. Monck
Not Just Air Pollution: How The Clean Air Act Can Fix Zoning, Transportation, And Afforadable Housing, Nicholas D. Monck
University of Colorado Law Review Forum
The Clean Air Act of 1970 produced a revolution in environmental law. From its unique approach to federalism to its technology forcing provisions, it remains an innovative statute to this day. In light of the growing threat posed by climate change, federal administrators have worked to adapt its text to deal with greenhouse gasses and carbon emissions. Global warming, though, is not the only context in which the Clean Air Act (CAA) can be used in ways not originally intended. Although not meant as an urban planning law, the CAA’s Transportation Control Plans (TCPs) offer an opportunity to promote smarter …

An Evaluation Of Sentinel-1 And Sentinel-2 For Land Cover Classification, Aaron Meneghini
An Evaluation Of Sentinel-1 And Sentinel-2 For Land Cover Classification, Aaron Meneghini
Sustainability and Social Justice
This study evaluates Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 remotely sensed images for tropical land cover classification. The dual polarized Sentinel-1 VV and VH backscatter images and four 10-meter multispectral bands of Sentinel-2 were used to create six land cover classification images across two study areas along the border of the Bolivian Pando Department and the Brazilian state of Acre. Results indicate that Sentinel-2 multispectral bands possess a higher overall performance in delineating land cover types than the Sentinel-1 backscatter bands. Sentinel-1 backscatter bands delineated land cover types based on their surficial properties but did not facilitate the separation of similarly textured classes. …

Cultural Diversity In Corporate Boards And Firm Outcomes, Manaswini Bhalla, Suresh Bhagavatula
Cultural Diversity In Corporate Boards And Firm Outcomes, Manaswini Bhalla, Suresh Bhagavatula
Working Papers
Using self-reported religions, castes and last names from Indian matrimonial websites and machine learning methods, we map individuals’ last names to progressively finer levels of cultural identity. Using this mapping, we show that Indian corporate boards have systematically low cultural diversity over 1999-2015, however finely we measure identity. Greater board diversity accompanies better firm quality and governance. Causal analysis shows that lack of diversity on boards worsens firm performance, with strongest results for the finest measure of identity. Our findings demonstrate people?s desire to associate with those who share their cultural identity, even in economically important settings, with detrimental effects.

Activating Place: America’S Former Beer Capital, Elise Chelak
Architecture Senior Theses
This thesis contends that the tool of mapping, as well as its various techniques and typologies, can uncover historical identities in the urban landscape, so as to generate rich, spatial narratives of place. Through alternative and contemporary methods of mapping, (e.g. drift, layering, game-board, thick-mapping, ghost-mapping, and counter-mapping), community stories are layered to reveal a complete and unaltered genius loci (spirit of place). Fragments of the urban fabric that were once erased, excluded, or edited, are now reframed for the work they do to contain and convey, and reinterpret to revitalize this neighborhood while drawing on its past. Acknowledging what …
Re*Presenting Dharavi: Activism And Agency Of Architecture In Informal Settlements, Ahnaf Chowdhury, Anuradha Desai
Re*Presenting Dharavi: Activism And Agency Of Architecture In Informal Settlements, Ahnaf Chowdhury, Anuradha Desai
Architecture Senior Theses
Plastic recycling is a critical informal economy in Dharavi, one of Asia's largest slums in the heart of Mumbai. Waste from dumping grounds is collected, sorted and prepared by recyclers who transform trash into a commodity to be sold back into the city. As part of top-down efforts to redevelop Dharavi's valuable land, the Mumbai government has tarnished the industry's image, labeling it as "polluting," and has increased the cost of utilities such as electricity in an effort to drive it out of the community. As it becomes more expensive for recyclers to operate, the labor unions that organize the …

Taking Action: A Case Study Analyzing The Deficiencies And Potential Opportunities For Improvement In The Severe Weather Warning System, Carson Meredith
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The United States is one of the most prone areas in the world to experience severe weather. A warning system operated by the National Weather Service alerts the public of the dangers of severe weather. The purpose of this project is to analyze the effectiveness of the National Weather Service warning system across Kentucky and Tennessee. A case study is presented analyzing six severe weather events in areas warned by the National Weather Service offices in Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee in 2018. Factors reviewed include effectiveness in issuing timely warnings, verification (i.e., whether or not severe weather actually occurred), …

In natural grasslands, C4 plant dominance increases with growing season temperatures and reflects distinct differences in plant growth rates and water use efficiencies of C3 vs. C4 photosynthetic pathways. However, in lawns, management decisions influence interactions between planted turfgrass and weed species, leading to some uncertainty about the degree of human vs. climatic controls on lawn species distributions. We measured herbaceous plant carbon isotope ratios (δ13C, index of C3/C4 relative abundance) and C4 cover in residential lawns across seven U.S. cities to determine how climate, lawn plant management, or interactions between …

Role Of Digital Divide In Optimal Zero-Rating Policy, Neena Pandey, Subhajyoti Bandyopadhyay, Manaswini Bhalla
Working Papers
Several Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Content Providers (CPs) have proposed zero-rating plans whereby consumers get access to certain websites without paying for it. While consumer and open-access advocates have decried these plans, arguing that they are anti-competitive and violate the principles of net neutrality, ISPs and CPs have argued that such initiatives enable segments of the world population - especially those in developing economies - to finally join the rest of the world in accessing the Internet. Extant literature on the topic has contributed to this debate by analyzing the optimality of zero-rating policy as an extension of net …

From Education To Incarceration: A Study Of School Process Affecting Disproportionate Minority Contact Within Hardin County’S Juvenile Justice System, Krystal Carver-Dickens
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study seeks to understand how school processes affect disproportionate minority contact within the Hardin County Juvenile Justice System. A study completed by Lovell and Drummond (2016) in conjunction with the Hardin County BRIDGES Council, is used as the foundation for the current research. The original research, along with several others, examined disproportionate minority contact (DMC) after the student had been referred from their respective schools to the juvenile court system. The current study investigates 858 juvenile court records, with permission of the Hardin County Juvenile Judges, and examines school information included in the court records related to the student …
Socioeconomic And Demographic Correlates Of Sex Offender Residency In Massachusetts, Margaret Chiavelli
Socioeconomic And Demographic Correlates Of Sex Offender Residency In Massachusetts, Margaret Chiavelli
Criminology Student Work
In states with sex offender residency restrictions, sex offenders have been found to cluster in areas that are poorer, less white, and generally less advantaged, but little research has been done on whether these patterns exist without residency restrictions in place (Tewksbury & Mustaine, 2008). All cities and towns in the state of Massachusetts eliminated residency restrictions for sex offenders in 2015 by way of court order. This policy shift provides a unique opportunity to study sex offender residency patterns that are not constrained to certain geographic areas. Using publicly available data, multivariate regression was used to examine correlates of …

How Virtual Reality Impacts The Landscape Architecture Design Process During The Phases Of Analysis And Concept Development At The Master Planning Scale, Todd Johnson, Benjamin H. George, Drew M. Hill
Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications
Virtual reality (VR) can offer many benefits for designers. In the field of landscape architecture, the technology is primarily being used as a tool for design review in the late stages of the design process, yet many of the benefits that make VR valuable in the later stages of the design process suggest that VR may be equally valuable when used in earlier stages such as analysis and concept development. This research examined incorporating VR into the design phases of analysis and concept development, and integrated its use with traditional landscape architecture methods to measure its impacts on a large …

College Athletics: The Chink In The Seventh Circuit's "Law And Economics" Armor, Michael A. Carrier, Marc Edelman
Michigan Law Review Online
If any court is linked to the “law and economics” movement, it is the Seventh Circuit, home of former Judge Richard Posner, the “Chicago School,” and analysis based on markets and economics. It thus comes as a surprise that in college-athletics cases, the court has replaced economic analysis with legal formalisms. In adopting a deferential approach that would uphold nearly every rule the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) claims is related to amateurism, the court recalls the pre- Chicago School era, in which courts aggressively applied “per se” illegality based on a restraint’s form, rather than substance. While the …
