Research Project In Finance: Kinder Morgan Inc. (Kmi), Christopher Holmes Apr 2019

Research Project In Finance: Kinder Morgan Inc. (Kmi), Christopher Holmes

Student Scholarship

KMI is a buy because the market is currently mispricing the company due to fears over their CO2 segment and their debt level.

First, it is currently being rumored that management is considering the sale of its CO2 business. This would be a positive because it would take away the concerns regarding CO2 and could help lead to a higher multiple. Additionally, the company’s backlog would become much more concentrated in higher growth areas if this segment is sold.

Second, the debt picture is misunderstood. The company currently has an investment grade rating from the rating agencies and currently has …

Gender Discrepancy In The Weight Room, Colby Norris Apr 2019

Gender Discrepancy In The Weight Room, Colby Norris

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

This paper proposed that despite the benefits of weightlifting, especially for women, that an uneven gender divide still exists in the weight room. It was also proposed that the masculine culture of the gym deters women from lifting. It was found through an observational study that there were four times more men than women in the weights areas of gyms. It was also found that women are more uncomfortable than men when their physique is being examined and that lifting women identify more strongly with traditionally "masculine" personality terms than non-lifting women do. Women cite a lack of knowledge, a …

Land Use Changes And Zoning Alternatives In Auburn, Maine's Agriculture And Resource Protection District, Signe Lynch, Emerson Krull, William Anderson Apr 2019

Land Use Changes And Zoning Alternatives In Auburn, Maine's Agriculture And Resource Protection District, Signe Lynch, Emerson Krull, William Anderson

Community Engaged Research Reports

In an effort to protect natural resources and promote agricultural productivity, the City of Auburn established the Agriculture and Resource Protection (AGRP) zoning district in 1964. The “Ag Zone,” as we will be referring to it in this report, is still a critical component of Auburn’s landscape, making up 45% of the city’s total acreage (Ad Hoc Committee, 3). Since the creation of the Ag Zone in the early 1960’s, Auburn’s farming and forestry culture have changed and the population has declined.. In recent years, several committees and consultants have considered these shifting trends and have noted that amendments are …

Feasibility Report For Lewiston And Auburn Regional Transportation Authority, Anika Becker, Claire Naughton, Tala Kasih Apr 2019

Feasibility Report For Lewiston And Auburn Regional Transportation Authority, Anika Becker, Claire Naughton, Tala Kasih

Community Engaged Research Reports

A Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) consists of a single committee overlooking the transportation needs, for example rail, bus, or airplane, of a designated region or city. The implementation of an RTA within a region establishes a streamlined approach to decision making, economic development, and meeting community needs in areas such as accessibility and sustainability. In this report we interviewed transportation authorities within Lewiston-Auburn and researched existing RTAs throughout the country. We show results from both our interviews and research into existing RTAs and offer recommendations towards implementing an RTA in the Lewiston-Auburn region.

In order to understand the specific needs, …

Addressing Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Needs In Androscoggin County, Erin Hazlett-Norman, Maggie O'Shea, Grace Warder Apr 2019

Addressing Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Needs In Androscoggin County, Erin Hazlett-Norman, Maggie O'Shea, Grace Warder

Community Engaged Research Reports

Public health and social equity hinge upon the accessibility of medical services to all. Lack of access to transportation for routine and non-emergency medical appointments poses a significant barrier to appointment attendance, a barrier that disproportionately impact low income people and other marginalized groups. Healthcare providers also suffer major financial losses when patients are unable to attend their appointments. Prior research and community forums in Androscoggin County, Maine have identified several shortcomings to existing local non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) services, illuminating the need for transportation options that better address the specific needs of the local population. In this report, we …

Comparing Past Board Assembly Inemi Roadmaps To Technology Outcomes, Annaka Rose Balch Apr 2019

Comparing Past Board Assembly Inemi Roadmaps To Technology Outcomes, Annaka Rose Balch

ENGS 86 Independent Projects (AB Students)

This project compares past board assembly roadmaps with actual technological outcomes, examining the progression of predictions across seven significant aspects of board assembly covered in the 1994, 2002, 2007, 2013 and 2017 roadmaps: 1) Conversion Costs, 2) NPI Cycle Time, 3) Component Trends, 4) Solder Paste, 5) Bar Solder, 6) Wave Solder Flux and 7) Die Attach Adhesives. It should be noted that there are discrepancies between these roadmaps—from general outline to the many aspects of board assembly that are investigated. This project aims to bridge these discrepancies in a comprehensive fashion to better inform iNEMI and identify possible areas …

Adjudication And The Adaptive Capacity Of Pecan Farmers In The Lower Rio Grande, Daniel R. Beene Apr 2019

Adjudication And The Adaptive Capacity Of Pecan Farmers In The Lower Rio Grande, Daniel R. Beene

Geography ETDs

Despite growing uncertainty of water availability in the future and popular understandings of water conservation in agriculture, a growing number of farmers in the Lower Rio Grande Basin are rapidly transitioning to pecan orchards, a long-term and highly water-dependent crop. Drivers of landscape change can be environmental, historic, socioeconomic, or institutional. Adaptation to change is understood as responses to external stimuli and is limited to a threshold by which an actor can meet their goals. Much of the current scholarship focuses on a given population’s adaptive capacity toward global climate change, however, most water policy in the western United States …

Architectural Ecotone: The Edge Effect, Holly Metzger, Tara Nuqul Apr 2019

Architectural Ecotone: The Edge Effect, Holly Metzger, Tara Nuqul

Architecture Senior Theses

This thesis aims to study the relationship between architecture and its environment. Specifically, this thesis will explore symbiotic relationships between architecture and surrounding ecosystems in many different terrains. Iceland presents a particular important case for this idea because it is a hotbed of geological activity. The country itself is a patchwork of desert, glaciers, geysers, lava fields and active volcano, which has led to Iceland developing intelligent systems of vernacular architecture throughout history to mediate this environment.

This thesis studies systems of domestic vernacular architecture by examining the qualities and characteristics of craft, materiality, structure, and a symbiotic relationship to …

The Rebel Made Me Do It: Mascots, Race, And The Lost Cause, Patrick Smith Apr 2019

The Rebel Made Me Do It: Mascots, Race, And The Lost Cause, Patrick Smith

Dissertations

Public memory is commonly tied to street names, toponyms, and monuments because they are interacted with daily and are often directly associated with race, class, and regimes of power. Mascots are not thought of in the same manner although they are present as part of everyday life. The childish or sometimes comedic nature of the mascot discounts it from many considerations of its influence, symbolism and history. Nonetheless this research focuses on the term “Rebel” as a secondary school mascot. The term possesses the trappings of race because the American vernacular ties the word to the Confederate States of America …

Right At Home: Modeling Sub-Federal Resistance As Criminal Justice Reform, Trevor G. Gardner Apr 2019

Right At Home: Modeling Sub-Federal Resistance As Criminal Justice Reform, Trevor G. Gardner

Florida State University Law Review

Over the past two decades, state and local governments have crippled the federal war on marijuana as well as a series of federal initiatives designed to enforce federal immigration law through city and county police departments. This Article characterizes these and similar events as sub-federal government resistance in service of criminal justice reform. In keeping with recent sub-federal criminal reform movements, it prescribes a process model of reform consisting of four stages: enforcement abstinence, enforcement nullification, mimicry, and enforcement abolition. The state and local governments that pass through each of these stages can frustrate the enforcement of federal criminal law …

Intergenerational Space-Holding Within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Other Gender & Sexual Minority Communities, Shaun William Kevin Connors

Community Engagement Student Work

This project examined the ways LGBTQ+ communities document, share, and connect to their histories. It supported an interactive, sensory learning-based workshop that fostered exploration and learning in LGBTQ+ and adjacent communities. The workshop was attended by a variety of participants who showed the markers of having engaged in a cultural third space while learning about and engaging with LGBTQ+ history-based information. Overall, the workshop was a resounding success and provided opportunities for further research and exploration into the connections between how people access their personal and cultural histories and what pathways are provided for them to do so.

Where Did They Go? Analysis Of Out-Migration From Mammoth Cave National Park, 1920-1940, Collins U. Eke Apr 2019

Where Did They Go? Analysis Of Out-Migration From Mammoth Cave National Park, 1920-1940, Collins U. Eke

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The 52,830-acre Mammoth Cave National Park, located in the karst region of south-central Kentucky, was formally established in July of 1941, culminating nearly three decades of park creation that displaced several thousand residents of the region. This thesis sampled residents using the 1920 manuscript census for the United States Census of Population and Housing and tracked their migration destinations using the 1930 and 1940 manuscript censuses. Migration patterns for the entire sample, as well as by race and homeownership status, were identified through mapping. Out-migrants generally chose locations north, west, and east of the proposed park area, noticeably neglecting the …

Building Reconfigurations, Alex Allen, Scott Krabath Apr 2019

Building Reconfigurations, Alex Allen, Scott Krabath

Architecture Senior Theses

In a contemporary society saturated with images, photographs of physical artifacts are intermixed with inaccurate drawings and low-res copies. These new images challenge the associations between buildings and their representations. While Robin Evans writes about the translation of drawings to buildings in the past, this thesis extends this exploration to include the reconfiguration of images using several current digital formats. This aligns to Joselit's statement in After Art, which argues that "an image is a visual byte, vulnerable to virtually infinite remediation." This thesis contends that the reconfiguration of active images into static material can be exploited as a design …

Territories Of Matter: Revealing The Economies And Ecologies Of Aluminum, Noah Anderson Apr 2019

Territories Of Matter: Revealing The Economies And Ecologies Of Aluminum, Noah Anderson

Architecture Senior Theses

This project seeks to understand matter through the environments it creates. These environments, created through production, end-use, and disposal, extend to the scale of the world, the territory and the product. In a globalized world, the separate environments of a single material are highly external, and while we may know where a material comes from, the consequences of its extraction and manufacture are out-of-site, out-of-mind. This externalization is evident for Aluminum, which has a diverse and often contradictory range of environments.
