The Urban Shelf : A Hybrid Between Architecture And Infrastructure, William Morales
The Urban Shelf : A Hybrid Between Architecture And Infrastructure, William Morales
Masters Theses
As one of the most prominent and in-famous pieces of infrastructure in the built environment of the city, the freeway has created nasty conditions of socioeconomic division, segregation, mono-functional zoning and land use, and urban sprawl. In the case of Downtown Los Angeles, the city has evolved into two predominant zones of manufacturing and commercial uses. This process has pushed out housing and other necessary infrastructure to the outskirts of the city, making commutes to work, grocery stores, healthcare, and other basic necessities long and burdensome. In general, the ability to acquire resources is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive.

Where We Are : Where We Thought We Were Going, Nathan Prebonick
Masters Theses
In this thesis I will discuss ideas of place, space and repurposing as they relate to my paintings. By tying these ideas back to specific hometown sites, I will trace the evolution of ideas back to their genesis to provide context for the aesthetics of the work. I reference the texts of Robert Smithson and Tim Cresswell, who wrote about transitive notions of place, as well as David Joselit, who’s “Painting Beside Itself” essay focused on painters concerned with the question of how painting enters a network. I hope to use these texts, in conjunction with personal descriptions of sites …
Urban Acupuncture : Can The Deliberate Use Of Tactical Interventions Reinvigorate Informal Settlements?, Robert Samir Diaz Vicente
Urban Acupuncture : Can The Deliberate Use Of Tactical Interventions Reinvigorate Informal Settlements?, Robert Samir Diaz Vicente
Masters Theses
Due to the rapid development of informal settlements, essential urban conditions such as public spaces, infrastructure, and amiable living conditions are lacking from the urban context. These hyperly urban communities lack an overall organizational strategy that preserve their successes i.e. human scale, community interrelations, hyper functionality while addressing its downfalls organic chaotic growth and lack of general systems.
Conventional design and planning used in “formal’ urban spaces focus on long lasting strokes of urbanisation, this means that the built geography moves slow, and are designed for this slow pace changing. Informal Settlements are dynamic and perpetually rearranging themselves to suit …
Examining Online Communities Through Wicca, Kathryn Lawson
Examining Online Communities Through Wicca, Kathryn Lawson
Augsburg Honors Review
Wicca (or Witchcraft) is one particular religion that has benefitted from the members' ability to utilize the communications of the Internet for networking with other Wiccans, sharing religious information and experience, and even conducting online rituals. However, this spread of Wiccan resources on the Internet has fueled the debate among people of many faiths over whether or not religious ceremonies and gatherings online qualify as a substitute for assembling in person. Herein resides the controversy which I will address by taking a closer look at the Wiccan cofltmunity on the Internet and exploring the differing viewpoints of this topic.
"Oh, Those Horsemen!" Regulatory Change And Cultural Peculiarity In Finland, Pauliina Raento
"Oh, Those Horsemen!" Regulatory Change And Cultural Peculiarity In Finland, Pauliina Raento
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Abstract
Finland's three gambling monopoly operators merged into one state-owned entity in 2017. A particular challenge to the process came from its smallest constituent, the tote company Fintoto, its owner, the national Trotting and Horse Breeding Association, and the equine industry’s cultural peculiarity.
The process is examined from the perspective of the equine industry, which had to choose between joining or not joining the merger. The exchanges between 'horse people' and state regulators, the equine industry’s resistance and decision to participate in the merger, and concerns about impact are traced from Finland's leading equine newspaper, in 2015–2017. The articles are …

The images and narration explores the garment factories in Bangladesh and contains ‘a photographer’s cognitive meta-data’, including ethical dilemmas while taking the images.
The Effect Of Job Referrals On Labor Market Outcomes In Brazil, Christopher J. O'Leary, Túlio Cravo, Ana Cristina Sierra, Leandro Justino Veloso
The Effect Of Job Referrals On Labor Market Outcomes In Brazil, Christopher J. O'Leary, Túlio Cravo, Ana Cristina Sierra, Leandro Justino Veloso
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper is the first to use program administrative data from Brazil’s National Employment System (SINE) to assess the impact of SINE job interview referrals on labor market outcomes. Data for a five-year period (2012–2016) are used to evaluate the impact of SINE on employment probability, wage rates, time until reemployment, and job tenure. Difference-in-differences estimates suggest that a SINE job interview referral increases the probability of finding a job within three months of the referral and reduces the number of months to find reemployment, the average job tenure of the next job, and the reemployment wage. Subgroup analysis suggests …

The Impact Of Reflective Practice On Teacher Candidates' Learning, Mary L. Slade, Tammy J. Burnham Dr., Sarah Marie Catalana, Tammy Waters
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Reflection is a high impact practice that develops teacher candidates’ learning. Critical reflection requires teacher candidates to continually examine their own thoughts, perspectives, biases, and actions. Reflective practice facilitates the development of new knowledge, skills, and dispositions in teacher candidates by fostering critical contemplation of actions in a real-world environment. Reflection practice is specifically used when students study education in a university course and apply what they learn in a related field experience in a K-12 school. This study was conducted in order to determine the impact of reflective practice on teacher candidates enrolled in a course focused on developmental …
Examining The Relationship Between Preservice Teachers’ Interest In Various Disciplinary Areas Of Social Studies And Their Planned Teaching Effort For These Disciplines’ Topics, Şahin Dündar

Teaching Teacher Candidates About Social Transformations Through Arts And Place: “Wait, But What Does It Have To Do With Me As A Teacher?”, Olga Shugurova
i.e.: inquiry in education
In this creative and reflective inquiry, I explore the pedagogical significance of arts as a place-based praxis of social transformations in a Canadian teacher education program with a focus on my students’ learning experience. The research features their pedagogical becoming (Gouzouasis, Irwin, Miles, & Gordon, 2013) which includes the aesthetic development of their self-concept as future teachers and the critical development of their authorial agency (Matusov, 2011; Matusov et al., 2016;). The research question was, in fact, posed by some of the students themselves, who did not understand or did not want to understand, why they were compelled to take …

National Integration And Its Role In Building The State In Iraq: A Study In Political Geography, Hamida Abdul Hussein Mohammed Al-Zalami, Tartil Faysal Ghazi, Adnan Kazim Jabbar Al-Shaibani
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The subject of national integration is one of the topics that have become of great importance at the present time because of its importance in the treatment of many of the crises that affect the political systems in third countries of the world. There is no doubt that Iraq consists of a diverse population of national and religious, and that this diversity should be a factor of weakness, not strength by the ruling regimes that have dominated the rule of Iraq since 1921 and so far because of lack of mechanisms to crisis management of this diversity, which led As …

Hunt V. Kenai Peninsula Borough: The Search For Clarity In Legislative Prayer Speaker Selection, Charles Truslow, Craig Jones
Hunt V. Kenai Peninsula Borough: The Search For Clarity In Legislative Prayer Speaker Selection, Charles Truslow, Craig Jones
Alaska Law Review
In 2016, three residents of the Kenai Peninsula Borough were prevented from delivering an invocation at a Borough Assembly meeting because they were neither borough chaplains nor members of a qualifying religious association. These three residents sued the borough, claiming that the Borough Assembly’s speaker selection policy violated the Alaska Constitution’s Establishment Clause. The superior court ruled for the plaintiffs, holding that the selection policy constituted a step towards the establishment of a state religion. Applying Supreme Court precedent, the superior court reached the correct result. However, the limited amount of federal precedent on the principles guiding speaker selection policies …
Using Satellite-Based Hydro-Climate Variables And Machine Learning For Streamflow Modeling At Various Scales In The Upper Mississippi River Basin, Dongjae Kwon
Theses and Dissertations
Streamflow data are essential to study the hydrologic cycle and to attain appropriate water resource management policies. However, the availability of gauge data is limited due to various reasons such as economic, political, instrumental malfunctioning, and poor spatial distribution. Although streamflow can be simulated by process-based and machine learning approaches, applicability is limited due to intensive modeling effort, or its black-box nature, respectively. Here, we introduce a machine learning (Boosted Regression Tree (BRT)) approach based on remote sensing data to simulate monthly streamflow for three of varying sizes watersheds in the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB). By integrating spatial land …

This paper attempts to understand motivators and de-motivators that influence the decisions of software professionals to take up and sustain software testing careers across four different countries, i.e. Canada, China, Cuba, and India. The research question can be framed as “How many software professionals across different geographies are keen to take up testing careers, and what are the reasons for their choices?” Towards that, we developed a cross-sectional but simple survey-based instrument. In this study we investigated how software testers perceived and valued what they do and their environmental settings. The study pointed out the importance of visualizing software testing …

A Drop In The Bucket: Evaluating Modern Print News Coverage Of Drought In The U.S., Jessica Pollard
A Drop In The Bucket: Evaluating Modern Print News Coverage Of Drought In The U.S., Jessica Pollard
University Honors Theses
How the media portrays environmental issues related to climate change can affect public opinion and influence policy making. This paper seeks to explore the media’s portrayal of climate change through the lens of drought, using the drought which took place in California between 2011 and 2017, as a case study. The study finds that while the press gives drought space in newspapers across the country, it infrequently connects the weather event to anthropological climate change. Articles pertaining to the drought in California frequently rely on the expertise of politicians over scientists.

Unobtrusive Location-Based Access Control Utilizing Existing Ieee 802.11 Infrastructure, Hosam Alamleh
Doctoral Dissertations
Mobile devices can sense several types of signals over the air using different radio frequency technologies (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular signals, etc.). Furthermore, mobile devices receive broadcast messages from transmitting entities (e.g., network access points, cellular phone towers, etc.) and can measure the received signal strength from these entities. Broadcast messages carry the information needed in case a mobile device chooses to establish communication. We believe that these signals can be utilized in the context of access control, specifically because they could provide an indication of the location of a user's device. Such a “location proof” could then be used …
Cycles Of Displacement: The Experience Of Immigrants And Refugees From East Africa In Northeast Portland, Julianna I. Robidoux
Cycles Of Displacement: The Experience Of Immigrants And Refugees From East Africa In Northeast Portland, Julianna I. Robidoux
University Honors Theses
Cultural displacement is an effect of gentrification taking place in Northeast Portland, Oregon. The work of Hyra (2015) and Abrahamson (2005) is applied to the Eastern African enclave in Northeast Portland, which has worked to maintain attachments to their home countries and culture and recreate places of community they had in their homeland. I used qualitative research to collect data in the form of interviews with members of this enclave to highlight the negative consequences of displacement within a community. I also interviewed employees at housing organizations who work with immigrants and refugees, a documentary filmmaker who focuses on issues …

The Bondage Of Freedom: Phillis Wheatley’S Struggle In Slavery And Emancipation, Alyssa Hunt
Andrews Research Conference
The intellectual influence given to Phillis Wheatley by her white owners allowed for the young slave to cultivate her craft of poetry, which led to her achievement in becoming the first African woman to publish a book. Wheatley’s accomplishments earned her international popularity and eventual freedom from her life as a slave. However, her emancipation proved detrimental for her career as she lost the support and resources needed to publish another book of poetry. Regardless, the poetry she crafted in her short lifetime, and the boundaries she surpassed as an African slave in the 18thcentury, led to a …
Designing And Composing For Interdependent Collaborative Performance With Physics-Based Virtual Instruments, Eric Sheffield
Designing And Composing For Interdependent Collaborative Performance With Physics-Based Virtual Instruments, Eric Sheffield
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Interdependent collaboration is a system of live musical performance in which performers can directly manipulate each other’s musical outcomes. While most collaborative musical systems implement electronic communication channels between players that allow for parameter mappings, remote transmissions of actions and intentions, or exchanges of musical fragments, they interrupt the energy continuum between gesture and sound, breaking our cognitive representation of gesture to sound dynamics.
Physics-based virtual instruments allow for acoustically and physically plausible behaviors that are related to (and can be extended beyond) our experience of the physical world. They inherently maintain and respect a representation of the gesture to …

Sustaining Rural Place: Rethinking Design Principles For Social Sustainability In Rural America, Carlie C. Donnelly
University Honors Theses
Although the population of Rural America is declining, we will likely never live in a country that does not need rural communities to sustain our natural resources. The field of urban design has developed great strategies for creating livable communities, but they are not universal strategies. The design of rural towns and community places has been neglected from the conversation of urban design principles as they are not directly applicable because of Rural America's lack of density which also results in an alternate social system. Through analysis of urban design principles and rural place making case studies, this thesis bridges …
