Determinants Of Fdi: Evidence From Developed & Developing Countries, Tarek Ibrahim Jun 2019

Determinants Of Fdi: Evidence From Developed & Developing Countries, Tarek Ibrahim

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the generic determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) assessed using data for 65 countries over the period between 1991 and 2017 by employing a panel data model. The goal of this study is to provide a more holistic view that highlights the variables that are significant in determining FDI regardless of the widely varying economic and institutional platforms across countries, regions and continents. The countries selected vary widely across trade facilitating infrastructure, technology platform, investor perception/ investment profile and economic environment. This study also applies control variables GDP, GDP per Capita, population, and inflation to avoid omitted …

The Weaponization Of Artificial Intelligence (Ai) And Its Implications On The Security Dilemma Between States: Could It Create A Situation Similar To "Mutually Assured Destruction" (Mad), Gilan Osama Dahab Jun 2019

The Weaponization Of Artificial Intelligence (Ai) And Its Implications On The Security Dilemma Between States: Could It Create A Situation Similar To "Mutually Assured Destruction" (Mad), Gilan Osama Dahab

Theses and Dissertations

There is no a consensus in the IR literature on the possible implications of AI for cyber or nuclear capabilities, and whether AI would exacerbate, or potentially mitigate, the security dilemma between actors with varying capabilities. This capstone project explores these questions, using experts' interviews and secondary data. It has tackled the issue under study by using the most-similar method in which most of the variables are similar. The paper argues the weaponization of AI exacerbates the security dilemma between states since it increases uncertainty. What is actually problematic about the military AI applications, as opposed to other military capabilities, …

A Framework For Sustainable Slum Development Based On Zero Waste Concept: "Learn To Earn Model", Sally Maher Elgizawy

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid urbanization of the last century caused more slum formation resulting in numerous adverse effects and is considered a major problem facing developing countries specially Egypt. This research touches on the complexities of sustainable slum development specially dealing with slum dwellers in a trial to enhance their capacities and potential which would benefit the community and lead to the development of the slum. Teaching them new skills through the "Learn to Earn Model'', will help them generate income which turns the slum into a catalyst for the economy rather than a burden on it. Another major problem in developing …

Sexual Citizenship, Incest, And The State: "The Unseen Of The Crime", Kelsey Zazanis May 2019

Sexual Citizenship, Incest, And The State: "The Unseen Of The Crime", Kelsey Zazanis

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This paper analyzes the colonial state’s role in manufacturing sexual violence. Deconstructing parallels between sexual violence in state detention centers and incestuous abuse of children, this paper examines theories of normativity, sexual citizenship, U.S. nationalism, and Marxist interpretations of the family unit. In identifying all citizenship as sexual citizenship—and identifying queer as all those who are denied sexual citizenship—I suggest that liberation from the state is crucial to queer liberation and the amelioration of sexual violence.

Not All Your Neighbors Are Free: Community Building With Incarcerated Folks In San Luis Obispo, Gianna Bissa May 2019

Not All Your Neighbors Are Free: Community Building With Incarcerated Folks In San Luis Obispo, Gianna Bissa

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

The American criminal justice system is rooted in white supremacist ideology that is predicated on the murder, displacement, exploitation, and marginalization of people of color. Scholars and activists recognize the American prison system as a modern form of slavery. Only three miles away from Cal Poly’s campus, the California Men’s Colony State Prison (CMC) operates as one of thirty-four state prisons in California. Nearly 4,000 men, trans women, and nonbinary people are being held at the CMC. Not only can mass incarceration be identified as one of the most dreadful state projects that violates human freedom, but also non-incarcerated community …

Statistical Machine Learning Methods For Mining Spatial And Temporal Data, Fei Tan May 2019

Statistical Machine Learning Methods For Mining Spatial And Temporal Data, Fei Tan

Dissertations

Spatial and temporal dependencies are ubiquitous properties of data in numerous domains. The popularity of spatial and temporal data mining has thus grown with the increasing prevalence of massive data. The presence of spatial and temporal attributes not only provides complementary useful perspectives, but also poses new challenges to the representation and integration into the learning procedure. In this dissertation, the involved spatial and temporal dependencies are explored with three genres: sample-wise, feature-wise, and target-wise. A family of novel methodologies is developed accordingly for the dependency representation in respective scenarios.

First, dependencies among discrete, continuous and repeated observations are studied …

Monitoring Multidimensional Poverty In The U.S., Sophie Mitra, Debra L. Brucker May 2019

Monitoring Multidimensional Poverty In The U.S., Sophie Mitra, Debra L. Brucker

Institute on Disability

On the international stage, poverty is increasingly understood multi-dimensionally as a deprivation of wellbeing in several dimensions rather than solely as a lack of income or low consumption. In the U.S., recent research shows that many people who are not counted as poor under the official or supplemental measures of income poverty experience multidimensional poverty. Yet there is no monitoring of multidimensional poverty. This paper examines trends in multidimensional poverty in the U.S. since 2013 using a measure that includes deprivations in family income, selfreported health status, educational attainment, employment status, and health insurance coverage. Using Current Population Survey data …

Faith, Mathematics, And Science: The Priority Of Scripture In The Pursuit And Acquisition Of Truth, Bob Mallison May 2019

Faith, Mathematics, And Science: The Priority Of Scripture In The Pursuit And Acquisition Of Truth, Bob Mallison

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2019

This research will examine some approaches for identifying truth as well as some issues involved in recognizing reliable sources of information. We will proceed from a decidedly Christian perspective including the conviction that God created an orderly universe (and that studying nature provides valuable information about Him) and that His Word, the Bible, even more clearly expresses in- formation about Him. We will discuss some of the essential tools used by mathematicians and scientists for the discovery of truth – namely, models. We will examine some valuable models from history, and briefly discuss that as additional scientific information became available, …

Marin Mersenne: Minim Monk And Messenger; Monotheism, Mathematics, And Music, Karl-Dieter Crisman

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2019

If you have taught a number theory course or even watched the mathematical news, you know that occasionally a new (and enormous) “Mersenne prime” is discovered. Those who have introduced students to the prehistory of calculus may know of a certain Marin Mersenne as the interlocutor who drew Fermat and Descartes (and others) out to discuss their methods of tangents (and more). But who was Mersenne, and what did he actually do? This presentation will give an overview of his times, his role in the history of science, and his own writings. We’ll especially look into why a monk from …

Conversations On The Global South – The Asian Dilemma, Eduardo Araral May 2019

Conversations On The Global South – The Asian Dilemma, Eduardo Araral

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

The East Asian growth story is a familiar narrative of prosperity but the same forces that drive such progress also induce widespread poverty and inequality in the region. The image of the East Asian region has greatly transformed. It is no longer a region simply wrought with narratives of colonialism or “barbarism” owing to their distinctively different culture; but is host to the greatest number of megacities. This transformation is evident in the rise of skyscrapers, young Vietnamese workers on motorbikes making their way to work in economic zones, and the presence of European cars and fancy restaurants. However, this …

Are Walkable Places Tech Incubators? Evidence From Nebraska’S ‘Silicon Prairie’, Bradley Bereitschaft May 2019

Are Walkable Places Tech Incubators? Evidence From Nebraska’S ‘Silicon Prairie’, Bradley Bereitschaft

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

This study examines the spatial association between science- and technology-related entrepreneurship and neighbourhood walkability in eastern Nebraska, often referred to as the northern ‘Silicon Prairie’. Tech start-up firms are expected to gravitate toward more walkable or pedestrian-oriented urban locations to benefit from heightened social interaction, knowledge spillovers and a more vibrant, creative atmosphere. Data on start-up firms collected from the online database Crunchbase.com and a walkability index provided by the popular online service Walk Score® were used to evaluate the walkability–tech entrepreneurship nexus. The spatial relationship between walkability and firm location may have important implications for metropolitan areas seeking to …

It is often claimed that conserving evolutionary history is more efficient than species‐based approaches for capturing the attributes of biodiversity that benefit people. This claim underpins academic analyses and recommendations about the distribution and prioritization of species and areas for conservation, but evolutionary history is rarely considered in practical conservation activities. One impediment to implementation is that arguments related to the human‐centric benefits of evolutionary history are often vague and the underlying mechanisms poorly explored. Herein we identify the arguments linking the prioritization of evolutionary history with benefits to people, and for each we explicate the purported mechanism, and evaluate …

The Use Of Geospatial Modeling And Novel Diagnostics To Detect And Map Risk Factors Of Soil-Transmitted Helminths In Feira De Santana, Brazil, Ryan Harry Avery

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections impact billions of people worldwide. The traditional STH control approach is a morbidity control strategy implementing mass drug administration (MDA) programs targeting school-aged children (SAC). In Brazil, this control strategy has decreased STH prevalence to less than 20% in most of the country and providing an opportunity to transition from the morbidity control program and towards a surveillance and response system geared towards STH elimination. Surveillance and response systems geared towards elimination require the implementation higher accuracy diagnostics to detect infection in low-transmission communities, surveillance of entire households, high-resolution modeling at the household-habitat scale, and targeted …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

X-ray computed tomography (XCT) can be used to identify lithologies and deformation structures within geological core, with the potential for the identification processes to be applied automatically. However, because of drilling disturbance and other artifacts, the use of large XCT-datasets in automated processes requires methods of quality control that can be applied systematically. We propose a new systematic method for quality control of XCT data that applies numerical measures to CT slices, and from this obtains data reflective of core quality. Because the measures are numerical they can be applied quickly and consistently between different sections and cores. This quality …

Solidarity Economy Lawyering, Renee Hatcher May 2019

Solidarity Economy Lawyering, Renee Hatcher

Tennessee Journal of Race, Gender, & Social Justice

This essay explores lawyering in the solidarity economy movement as an emergent approach to progressive transactional lawyering. The solidarity economy movement is a set of value-driven theories and practices that seeks to transform the global economy into a just economy that centers the needs of people and the planet. While the solidarity economy movement has been established for several decades in other parts of the world, the solidarity economy movement in the United States emerged in 2007. Over the last decade the movement has grown and gained significant momentum, with the rise of solidarity economy organizations and initiatives, as well …

Film For Landscape Architecture : Learning From Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, Ramon Solis May 2019

Film For Landscape Architecture : Learning From Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, Ramon Solis

Masters Theses

Introduction:

How can film inform landscape architectural thinking? In narrative film, we are spectators of unfolding space. In landscapes, our bodies enable us to author its unfolding.

In many ways, film is a well-suited and under-theorized territory for landscape. Its intersections are not without precedent, and in the following pages, I hope to describe the experiments, failures and potential scenarios I have uncovered for future practitioners of landscape architecture. A secondary intention of this thesis is as an articulation of my own practice, walking toward disciplinary edges, but always looking back to landscape architecture.

Let's Meet Over There / Eury Kim., Eury Kim May 2019

Let's Meet Over There / Eury Kim., Eury Kim

Masters Theses

Small communities that were once reliant on the land for basic sustenance progressively grew into large urban states. Our current cities manufacture items that are exchanged for other goods, by building factories that exploit resources from the ground. These commodities are providing much more than just food and shelter. Industry makes sustenance a secondary need to production by objectifying nature.

Italian writer Italo Calvino compares the weight of two Industrial Revolutions, depicting the first with “rolling mills” and “molten steel,” the second “with bits of information that flow” also noting that everything we “value for lightness quickly reveals … unbearable …

The Social Life Of Working Waterfronts : Strategies For Renewing The Social Value Of Productive Harbors, Evan Davenport May 2019

The Social Life Of Working Waterfronts : Strategies For Renewing The Social Value Of Productive Harbors, Evan Davenport

Masters Theses

The Social Life of Working Waterfronts is an independent thesis project that envisions the expanded role of an urban waterfront as a landscape for both industry and everyday life. The project calls for new synergies between public and private stakeholders to challenge the cultural perception of industrial landscapes and renew social and ecological value of productive harbors. By integrating industrial processes with civic life, working waterfronts can begin to operate mutually for industrial and societal needs. This proposal aims to establish spatial and systemic commons between a declining city and its thriving commercial fishing port by engaging and celebrating the …

No Long Urban, Can't Be Rural, Definitely Not Suburban : The Experience Of Detroit, Karin Jane Hostettler May 2019

No Long Urban, Can't Be Rural, Definitely Not Suburban : The Experience Of Detroit, Karin Jane Hostettler

Masters Theses

Detroit is a city of makers, dreamers and doers. When pushed to the brink the city does not step down, but instead continues to fight through grassroots movements, community advocates and neighborhood innovators. In this way Detroit has regained notoriety, not through corporate industry, banking or sports, but through those residents who have put their own difficulties aside for the betterment of their communities. However, the current economic and social developments in the city are centered around the downtown core of posterity, ignoring the work done by those individuals within the greater community context. In these neighborhoods, where autoworkers once …

Distance Is A Place, Zhiqing Guo May 2019

Distance Is A Place, Zhiqing Guo

Masters Theses

Distance is a Place documents a body of work and a process — a journey in translation, where a quality of feeling becomes an effort of physical capture in jewelry.

The desire to reveal how a deep responsiveness to the atmospheric distance of the sky is associated with an innermost nonverbal place of refuge motivates me to make perceptible this awareness for contemplation. Incorporating photographic images of the immeasurable dimensions of sky within translucent resin, a spatial distance collapses into wearable, tangible stillness to be worn on the body as an eternal present. 8

Seismic Observations Of Crevasse Growth Following Rain-Induced Glacier Acceleration, Haupapa/Tasman Glacier, New Zealand, Samuel Taylor-Offord, Huw Horgan, John Townend, J. Paul Winberry

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Changing rates of water input can affect both the flow of glaciers and ice sheets and their propensity to crevasse. Here we examine geodetic and seismic observations during two substantial (10–18-times background velocity) rain-induced glacier accelerations at Haupapa/Tasman Glacier, New Zealand. Changes in rain rate result in glacier acceleration and associated uplift, which propagate down-glacier. This pattern of acceleration results in a change to the strain rate field, which correlates with an order of magnitude increase in the apparent seismicity rate and an overall down-glacier migration in located seismicity. After each acceleration event the apparent seismicity rate decreases to below …

Life-Space Mobility And Aging In Place, Ivis Garcia Zambrana, Alan Kenneth Delatorre, Ja Young Kim, Julianne Reno, Keith Diaz Moore, Jordan Pieper, Jason Wheeler, Nicole Zinnanti, Brenda Jose

TREC Final Reports

Research on older adults explores the notion of “aging in place”—providing older adults the opportunity to continue to occupy familiar surroundings, to live in their own homes and communities. But oftentimes one’s ability to stay or leave, particularly in old age, depends on the built environment. Mobility is the ability to meet the basic needs to access goods, activities, services, and social interactions as they relate to quality of life. Thus, mobility is essential to older adults due to their limited, or gradually reducing, physical and cognitive abilities. In transportation research, mobility is often regarded in terms of travel behavior …
