Temporal And Spatial Dynamics Of Competitive Parapatry In Chewing Lice, Mark S. Hafner Jul 2019

Temporal And Spatial Dynamics Of Competitive Parapatry In Chewing Lice, Mark S. Hafner

Faculty Publications

We synthesize observations from 1979 to 2016 of a contact zone involving two subspecies of pocket gophers (Thomomys bottae connectens and T. b. opulentus) and their respective chewing lice (Geomydoecus aurei and G. centralis) along the Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico, U.S.A., to test predictions about the dynamics of the zone. Historically, the natural flood cycle of the Rio Grande prevented contact between the two subspecies of pocket gophers. Flood control measures completed in the 1930s permitted contact, thus establishing the hybrid zone between the pocket gophers and the contact zone between their lice (without hybridization). Since that time, …

Does Eviction Cause Poverty? Quasi-Experimental Evidence From Cook County, Il, John Eric Humphries, Nicholas Mader, Daniel Tannenbaum, Winnie Van Dijk Jul 2019

Does Eviction Cause Poverty? Quasi-Experimental Evidence From Cook County, Il, John Eric Humphries, Nicholas Mader, Daniel Tannenbaum, Winnie Van Dijk

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Each year, more than two million U.S. households have an eviction case filed against them. Many cities have recently implemented policies aimed at reducing the number of evictions, motivated by research showing strong associations between being evicted and subsequent adverse economic outcomes. Yet it is difficult to determine to what extent those associations represent causal relationships, because eviction itself is likely to be a consequence of adverse life events. This paper addresses that challenge and offers new causal evidence on how eviction affects financial distress, residential mobility, and neighborhood quality. We collect the near-universe of Cook County court records over …

Interracial Couples And Neighborhood Attainment In Percent White, Entropy, And Average Income, Hannah Louise Spencer Jul 2019

Interracial Couples And Neighborhood Attainment In Percent White, Entropy, And Average Income, Hannah Louise Spencer

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies of interracial couples' residential outcomes in the United States have limited their focus to a truncated selection of interracial couple-types. To provide a more complete understanding of the residential patterns of interracial couples and how they fit into the contemporary color line, I assess an expanded set of interracial and monoracial couple-types' outcomes in percentage White, entropy, and neighborhood income. I do this by employing multiple OLS regression analysis using data from the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act from 2005 to 2015. My results suggest that different types of interracial couples follow residential patterns that are distinctive from those …

Governance In A Globalised World, Richard Woodward Jul 2019

Governance In A Globalised World, Richard Woodward

Books/Book Chapters

Discussions surrounding the sources of power and authority that govern the social world have taken place since ancient times. Finally, in the latter half of the twentieth century, it appeared that this debate had been decisively resolved in favour of the view that governance was the preserve of governments. This was a consequence of the ascendance in the social sciences of methodologies that presupposed human activities to correspond to the territorial boundaries of sovereign states. The privileging of sovereign territoriality did not reflect a poverty of scholarly thinking but was a by-product of their social world. (Taylor, 1996). By the …

The Rule Of Law And The Exploitation Of Children In Africa, John Mukum Mbaku Jul 2019

The Rule Of Law And The Exploitation Of Children In Africa, John Mukum Mbaku

UC Law SF International Law Review

The abuse and exploitation of children is a major public policy priority for all African countries. Throughout the continent, children are routinely abused and exploited as sex objects; tools in the production of various goods, including cocoa, gold, and various minerals, as well as, services, such as pornography and prostitution; and, as child soldiers to fight in sectarian conflicts and civil wars. Children in Africa are exploited and abused by both domestic and external or foreign actors and these include, but are not limited to, family members and community leaders, foreign tourists who seek the continent’s children for sex, and …

Anticompetitive Mergers In Labor Markets, Ioana Marinescu, Herbert J. Hovenkamp Jul 2019

Anticompetitive Mergers In Labor Markets, Ioana Marinescu, Herbert J. Hovenkamp

Indiana Law Journal

Mergers of competitors are conventionally challenged under the federal antitrust laws when they threaten to lessen competition in some product or service market in which the merging firms sell. In many of these cases the threat is that in concentrated markets—those with only a few sellers—the merger increases the likelihood of collusion or collusion-like behavior. The result will be that the post-merger firm will reduce the volume of sales in the affected market and prices will rise.

Mergers can also injure competition in markets in which the firms purchase, however. Although that principle is widely recognized, very few litigated cases …

Exclusive Dining: Immigration And Restaurants In Chicago During The Era Of Chinese Exclusion, 1893-1933, Samuel C. King Jul 2019

Exclusive Dining: Immigration And Restaurants In Chicago During The Era Of Chinese Exclusion, 1893-1933, Samuel C. King

Theses and Dissertations

The central aim of this project is to describe and explicate the process by which the status of Chinese restaurants in the United States underwent a dramatic and complete reversal in American consumer culture between the 1890s and the 1930s. In pursuit of this aim, this research demonstrates the connection that historically existed between restaurants, race, immigration, and foreign affairs during the Chinese Exclusion era. The movement of Chinese American restaurants and cuisine from the fringes to the center of white consumer culture was not a process dictated exclusively by the tastes of non-Chinese Americans or by the ability of …

Space, Place, And Agency In The Roe 8 Highway Protest, Western Australia, Danielle Brady Jul 2019

Space, Place, And Agency In The Roe 8 Highway Protest, Western Australia, Danielle Brady

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The struggle to save the Beeliar Wetlands, an urban remnant bushland in Perth, Western Australia, demonstrates elements of both urban social and urban environmental movements. At the end of 2016, 30 years of objection to the continuation of the Roe Highway development (Roe 8) culminated in months of intense protest leading up to a state election and a cessation of work in 2017. During the long-running campaign, protestors fought to preserve high-conservation-value bushland that was contained in the planned road reserve. At the heart of this dispute were competing spatial uses. This article will analyze four protest actions from the …

Leveraging Railroad Land Grants And The Benefits Accruing In The New Economic Landscape, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill Jul 2019

Leveraging Railroad Land Grants And The Benefits Accruing In The New Economic Landscape, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill

Journal of Transportation Management

Unlike most companies, the major railroads in the United States have proven highly resilient to the vicissi- tudes of the market. We argue that this is due neither to the unique nature of rail haulage nor to superior management acumen. Rather this solidity is due to an immense wealth transfer to the railroads in the nine- teenth century that has dramatic impacts in the present. Moreover, the government protection and encouragement that rail grants represent did not end in the nineteenth century. It continues and represents an intangible asset that, while not on railroads’ balance sheet, is very real indeed.

A Conceptual And Qualitative Study Of Outsourcing Criteria And The Role Of Emotions In Decision-Making: The Case Of Equine Sports Transportation Outsourcing, Stefan E. Genchev, Gordon T. Gray, Stacia Wert-Gray

Journal of Transportation Management

For years, transportation outsourcing was considered a formal transaction-cost economics decision with little or no consideration for additional factors. This limiting perspective provides the stimulus for the current qualitative study, which examines additional factors affecting the transportation decision. For this article, the equine industry is studied in order to gain a better understanding of additional factors that go into decision- making. In-depthinterviewswithhorseownersandtrainersintheequineindustryrevealedthat,inaddition to a detailed cognitive assessment of transporter capabilities, the outsourcing decision involves a considerableemotionalcomponent. A Machine Learning Approach To Predicting Community Engagement On Social Media During Disasters, Adel Alshehri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of social media is expanding significantly and can serve a variety of purposes. Over the last few years, users of social media have played an increasing role in the dissemination of emergency and disaster information. It is becoming more common for affected populations and other stakeholders to turn to Twitter to gather information about a crisis when decisions need to be made, and action is taken. However, social media platforms, especially on Twitter, presents some drawbacks when it comes to gathering information during disasters. These drawbacks include information overload, messages are written in an informal format, the presence …

The Prevalence Of Peter Senge's Five Disciplines Of A Learning Organization In A Rural High School's Professional Development, Jacquelyn Stevens

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative case study used mixed methods data collection to research the prevalence of Senge’s (2006) five disciplines of a learning organization in a rural high school’s professional development. It also examined how the presence or absence of the five disciplines impacted teachers’ perceptions of professional development. The study included participants at a Midwestern rural high school and focused on elite interviews with the principal and professional development coordinators, a focus group with eight teachers, and survey results from fifty percent (50%) of the high school teaching staff. Findings indicated that the discipline of team learning is most prevalent in …

Searching Activity Trajectories With Semantics, Li-Hua Yin, Huiwen Liu Jul 2019

Searching Activity Trajectories With Semantics, Li-Hua Yin, Huiwen Liu

PhD Student’s Publications Collection

With the widespread use of smart phones and mobile Internet, social network users have generated massive geo-tagged tweets, photos and videos to form lots of informative trajectories which reveal not only their spatio-temporal dynamics, but also their activities in the physical world. Existing spatial trajectory query studies mainly focus on analyzing the spatio-temporal properties of the users’ trajectories, while leaving the understanding of their activities largely untouched. In this paper, we incorporate the semantics of the activity information embedded in trajectories into query modelling and processing, with the aim of providing end users more informative and meaningful results. To this …

These specific set of educators have not been exempt from the shortage statistic. A teachers’ overall job satisfaction plays a major role in their decision making on a daily basis and their longevity in the profession. Although there are studies on teachers’ job satisfaction, there is minimal research available on how the content area a middle school teacher …

Practices Of Intellectual Labor In The Republic Of Letters: Leibniz And Edward Bernard On Language And European Origins, Michael C. Carhart Jul 2019

Practices Of Intellectual Labor In The Republic Of Letters: Leibniz And Edward Bernard On Language And European Origins, Michael C. Carhart

History Faculty Publications

For a project on the origins and migrations of the European nations, Leibniz wanted to see a comparative lexicon purporting to derive the Germanic languages from Asiatic sources. Friends in nearby Gotha were known to have the book; its author had corresponded with Leibniz a few years earlier. But actually getting the book was more difficult than one might expect. In addition to the actual logistics and manners of scholarly communication in the late seventeenth century, this essay shows what scholars were trying to accomplish by establishing the prehistoric origins of the modern nations.

Targeting A Highly Repeated Germline Dna Sequence For Improved Real-Time Pcr-Based Detection Of Ascaris Infection In Human Stool, Nils Pilotte, Jacqueline R.M.A. Maasch, Alice V. Easton, Eric Dahlstrom, Thomas B. Nutman, Steven A. Williams

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: With the expansion of soil transmitted helminth (STH) intervention efforts and the corresponding decline in infection prevalence, there is an increased need for sensitive and specific STH diagnostic assays. Previously, through next generation sequencing (NGS)-based identification and targeting of non-coding, high copy-number repetitive DNA sequences, we described the development of a panel of improved quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR)-based assays for the detection of Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, Trichuris trichiura, and Strongyloides stercoralis. However, due to the phenomenon of chromosome diminution, a similar assay based on high copy-number repetitive DNA was not developed for the detection of Ascaris …

Introduction To Transoceanic America: Risk, Writing, And Revolution In The Global Pacific, Michelle Burnham Jul 2019

Introduction To Transoceanic America: Risk, Writing, And Revolution In The Global Pacific, Michelle Burnham

English

Transoceanic America offers a new approach to American literature by emphasizing the material and conceptual interconnectedness of the Atlantic and Pacific worlds. These oceans were tied together economically, textually, and politically, through such genres as maritime travel writing, mathematical and navigational schoolbooks, and the relatively new genre of the novel.

Especially during the age of revolutions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, long-distance transoceanic travel required calculating and managing risk in the interest of profit. The result was the emergence of a newly suspenseful form of narrative that came to characterize capitalist investment, political revolution, and novelistic plot. …

Benefits Of Additional Runway Crossings On Parallel Runway Operations, Sergio Ezequiel Taleisnik Jul 2019

Benefits Of Additional Runway Crossings On Parallel Runway Operations, Sergio Ezequiel Taleisnik

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

As the air transportation industry expands, airports face numerous challenges to manage the increasing traffic. Among these problems, runway crossings are a considerable source of ground traffic inefficiency and risk. Building end-around taxiways are the only strategy to avoid crossings, but these are not always feasible, and therefore airport planners must find alternatives. This study consisted of a simulation over an airport that currently requires a vast amount of its arrivals to go through runway crossings in order to reach the apron; the airport simulation software utilized was the Total Airspace and Airport Modeler (TAAM). The process began with a …

China’S Investment In The Democratic Republic Of Congo: The Impact Of The 2007 Sino-Congolese Agreement In A Postwar Period, John Bintu Bantu Kafarhire

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Over the past 10 years, China has become a major actor in African politics and development process. It has invested significant amounts of money in infrastructure in mineral-rich countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo. In return, China secures the exploitation of main resources, necessary for its own economic development, such as cobalt and copper. In 2007, a consortium of Chinese enterprises signed a ‘resource for infrastructure’ agreement with the Congolese government. The parties agreed that China would export and sell Congolese cobalt and copper and, in return, China would build a number of infrastructure projects in the Congo. …

Revolutionary Bodies: William Blake And The Struggle For Transcendence, Anthony Madia

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the course of his work, William Blake used bodies in order to express a desire for a transcendent revolution. This paper examines the different ways that Blake employs bodies to enact revolutionary change. In doing so, the paper discusses how bodies are written, write, and labor. Moreover, the paper refers to the societal constraints placed on the body, be they limits regarding gender, sex, race, or class. By engaging in a discussion of the body's limitations and capabilities coupled with Blake's relationship with the body, it becomes clear that Blake chooses to depict bodies struggle against the normative structure …

Disentangling The Relationship Between Race And Attitudes Toward The Police: Police Contact, Perceptions Of Safety, And Procedural Justice, Darren Wheelock, Meghan S. Stroshine, Michael M. O'Hear

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Recent incidents involving police shootings of unarmed men of color have increased tensions between communities and police departments across the United States. In response, scholars have intensified efforts to understand the factors that shape attitudes toward the police. The current study examines individual and aggregate factors that influence satisfaction with the police. To this end, we address three research questions: (a) are there significant racial/ethnic differences in satisfaction with police; (b) do these differences persist after accounting for experiences with the police, perceptions of safety, and aggregate measures; and (c) can procedural justice help explain racial variation in attitudes toward …

Blunted Evoked Prouroguanylin Endocrine Secretion In Chronic Constipation., Scott A. Waldman, Renata Tenenbaum, Henry C. Foehl, Peter Winkle, Patrick Griffin

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: Prouroguanylin (ProUGN) in the intestine is cleaved to form uroguanylin (UGN), which stimulates guanylate cyclase C (GUCY2C), inducing cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling. Paracrine release regulates fluid secretion, contributing to bowel function, whereas endocrine secretion evoked by eating forms a gut-brain axis, controlling appetite. Whereas hormone insufficiency contributes to hyperphagia in obesity, its contribution to the pathophysiology of constipation syndromes remains unexplored. Here, we compared circulating ProUGN and UGN in healthy subjects and in patients with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and patients with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C).

METHODS: Circulating ProUGN and UGN levels were measured in 60 healthy …
